Silver Marches - Overview

Born but a few short years ago, the Confederation of the Silver Marches is a collection of City-States who have joined together for mutual defense and support.

Located in the north of Faerun, the borders claimed by the Silver Marches may be easy to define but are very difficult to enforce. Encircled by 4 large and potentially dangerous regions, the Marches lay west of the Great Desert of Annauroch, north of the Great Forest, east of the Evermoors and south of the mountain range known as the Spine of the World and the glacier known as the Endless Ice Sea. Within this territory can be found vast forests, swift flowing rivers, jagged mountains and rugged hills, most of which is still unexplored by the people of this age.

As a confederation, the politics of the Silver Marches is dominated by the rulers of the largest cities of Sundabarr, Citadel Felbarr, Everlund, Citadel Adbar and Silverymoon, known as the Gem of the North.

The dominate races within the Marches include Humans (40%), Elves(20%) and Dwarfs (20%), with smaller percentages of half-elves(10%), halflings (5%), gnomes (2%) and half-orcs (2%).

With such a diverse population, their are a number of deities worshipped across this rugged land. The most common are Corellon Larethian, Helm, Lathandar, Lurue, Mielikki, Moradin, Mystra, Oghama, Selune, Sune and Tymora.

Aside from the Common Trading Tongue, many other languages are spoken across the region. The most common are Chondathan (Human) Illuskan (Coastal Human, Uthgardt), Dwarven (Shield Dwarves) and Elven (Moon & Sun Elves). Sylvan, Goblin, Orc and Giant are also spoken, but are significantly less common.

Ogres

Stories are told of ogres—horrendous stories of brutality and savagery, cannibalism and torture. Of rape and dismemberment, necrophilia, incest, mutilation, and all manners of hideous murder. Those who have not encountered ogres know the stories as warnings. Those who have survived such encounters know these tales to be tame compared to the truth.

An ogre revels in the misery of others. When smaller races aren’t available to crush between meaty fists or defile in blood-red lusts of violence, they turn to each other for entertainment. Nothing is taboo in ogre society. One would think that, left to themselves, an ogre tribe would quickly tear itself apart, with only the strongest surviving in the end—yet if there is one thing ogres respect, it is family. Ogre tribes are known as families, and many of their deformities and hideous features arise from the common practice of incest. The leader of a tribe is most often the father of the tribe, although in some cases a particularly violent or domineering ogress claims the title of mother. Ogre tribes bicker among themselves, a trait that thankfully keeps them busy and turned against each other rather than neighboring races. Yet time and again, a particularly violent and feared patriarch rises among the ogres, one capable of gathering multiple families under his command.

Ogre games are violent and cruel, and victims they use for entertainment are lucky if they die the first day. Ogres’ cruel senses of humor are the only way their crude minds show any spark of creativity, and the tools and methods of torture ogres devise are always nightmarish. An ogre’s great strength and lack of imagination makes it particularly suited for heavy labor, such as mining, forging, and clearing land, and more powerful giants (particularly hill giants and stone giants) often subjugate ogre families to serve them in such regards.

A typical adult ogre stands 10 feet tall and weighs roughly 650 pounds. They speak a guttural form of Giant but do understand simple words and phrases in Common. Although they have little understanding or ability to hide their movements or sneak up on a foe, they can see well in darkness and do

The ogres of Lurkwood come from 2 tribes; the Seven Fang and the Stumpers. The Seven Fang tribe are easily recognized by the large teeth and fangs they wear around their thick necks. The Stumpers take their name from their practice of severing off and eating a foot from each captive (or animal) they take. They then enjoy tormenting the limping (Stumped) prey for hours before finally tiring of the games and eating them. The two tribes hate each other and battle for dominance incessantly.

Raven's Wing is the small village on the southern edge of the Lurkwood where Falco spent his early days learning the path of the ranger from his father. Known for the skill and honesty of its hunters, the rangers of Raven's Wing are often hired by logging companies or even the town of Nesme for guidance, protection or even to act as a courrier, when something of importance needs to be taken to another town.

The sights and sounds of Raven's Wing can be seen and heard here.

The emblem of a trained and accomplished ranger from the town is a small broach of wood, depicting a raven with a star on his left, the moon beneath him and the sun held by his beak. The broach has become valued by some who wish to pass themselves as rangers. They use the town's reputation to gain contracts and jobs they are not qualified for. Losing your emblem is embaressing to say the least, but if stolen it makes the ranger responsible for the actions taken by those who have taken it.
