Welcome to Nightmares
Evil is all around us. It hides round every corner, stalking behind every tree. More dangerous than the nightmares that can be seen are the forces that corrupt and attack from beyond the veil of death. We have survived by hiding from it, by repelling it, and by clinging to our humanity on a frontier teemed with horror. But there are those of us who seek to destroy the evil that infests our world, committing themselves to fighting back. All of whom find that the battle against the nightmares is a war without end. Yet no one, big or small, strong or weak, brave or cowardly, can hope to escape it for long. Danger is something that, as you well know, finds you. The World The continent of Europa is more like a series of islands amidst a sea of uninhabitable wilderness. The cities of man are usually small-scale towns governed by a single magistrate and protected by a local garrison of soldiers. The system of government is something like a feudal republic, with a council of politicians making up the governing body. These representitives in turn issue orders to their underlords, who issue commands to and collect taxes from their working class and landowners. Trade is conducted primarily by sea, since the roads are practically suicide during the night. The frontier is a hellish place - forests stretching for miles and miles, infested by fearsome man-eating beasts and monsters. A common problem is Trolls, who eat strictly people and are fiercly territorial. At night, nocturnal creatures render the roads unusable and only the most brave and heavily armed dare leave the saftey of shelter. Even more fearsome creatures such as werewolves call the darkness their home, including unnatural undead creatures. Spirits, ghosts, or worse. Fashion is much as one would expect on Earth in the 19th century. Men will usually wear a hat with trousers or shorts and a jacket, if not a full dress suit, and ladies typically stick to trousers or modest dresses and short hair. Long hair is not unheard of, is generally understood as a hazard for obvious reasons. The average woman leaves her hair at shoulder-length. Much like their male equivalents, female atire has general mobility in mind, so skirts tend to be loose and not constricting. Romance is a viable concept in Europa, and couples commonly marry for love and not just family convinience, though a clear male heirarchy within the household still exists, with fathers handing down lineage to their eldest sons. That isn't to say women take a subordinate role, since the survival and preservation of women is accepted as important and sacred for reasons of reproduction. Women often take up professions commonly thought to be male dominated. Religion Religion is a pillar of stability in a world of darkness. Christian themes found on Earth are acceptable for dieties, such as Saints. I'll allow you to come up with your own diety, but if you were invisioning a traditional christian priest, you'll find information for Christ below: Christ 'The Saviour', 'Son of God' Alignment: No Chaotic, No Evil Domains: Good, Law, Protection, Healing Favoured Weapon: Any Simple Weapons Medieval and Renaissance weapons and armour are still in wide use across Europa. Firearms prove ineffective against the supernatural abilities of certain monsters, and thus monster hunters and adventurers commonly employ a mixture of modern and archaic in their arsenal. Firearms Firearms have advanced alongside the 19th century motif. Common guns are revolvers, lever and bolt action rifles, and shotguns. The stats for these can be found in the Dungeon Master's guide, under Modern Weapons. If anyone needs to see these stats for reference, let me know and I will include them below. Common goals, motives, professions. Evil motivates adventures in many ways. Some seek it out, purging evil wherever it appears. As a corrupting force, it is up to these brave few to keep evil from overunning humanity. But as you well know, you don't have to go looking for it. Most are refugees of the nightmares that haunt us, seeking only peace in a world of terror. In order to understand how to fight evil, one must understand what it is, and what form it can take. To this end, there are those few who commit their lives to the study of evil, or more commonly, the preservation of faith. Whatever your character's motivation, you will no doubt be pulled into the nightmares before long. |

Language
Common The common tongue in Europa is spoken by most anyone old enough to speak, and is otherwise known as 'The Low Tongue'. Spoken mostly by the lower class. Common is spoken in several dialects across the expanse of the continent, which materializes in-game as variation in accent. Every human character and some monster characters know common by default. The Merchant Tongue Carried over by spice merchants from the far east, the Merchant Tongue is spoken mostly by members of the middle-class, businessmen, traders, and obviously merchants. Merchant Tongue is common among vampires, devils, demons, and witches who commonly mascarade as humans for profit. The Noble Tongue The Noble, or High Tongue is spoken by the nobility of Europa - a more modern derivative of an ancient language. Religious texts and scriptures are written in the Noble Tongue, and is spoken traditionally in the noble council and in court. Arcanae A taboo tongue, Arcanae is the language of wizards and spellcasters. Arcane spells are written in Arcanae, and its alphabet forms the cannon of spellcraft. This replaces Draconic as the language of magic as in D and D. Monster Languages The following is a list of monsters who share a common tongue: -Vampires -Devils -Demons -Trolls |

Greystone
Located in Mainland Europa, Greystone is the largest inland city on the continent. Most human settlements are small villages or towns scattered along the coast or along trade routes. The city itself is made up of several districts ranging from religious to government to slums, and with its own necropolis. Lately, word has spread that the Lords of Greystone have lost control of the Necropolis and surrounding slums once the sun goes down. Desperate to find a solution to this problem, they have posted a great deal of money and even land to the ones who can get it done. Goodson The small village of Goodson has a history similar to that of any small village across Europa. Settled in an easily-defensible and open position, Goodson is primarily an agricultural and trading town. The population is perhaps somewhere around 200 souls. The town is run by a small council of Goodson's founding families, with the religious leader of the community also having a seat in the discussions. Lately the community has come under attack by some unseen presense. Something isn't right, and they've sent word to the local monestary for help. |
