Background:
Ernesto enrolled into the Mexican military when he was 16. Born in Matamoros Mexico, he is no stranger to combat. His grandfather was st the battle for the Alamo, and his grandmother was captured at the Battle of San Jacinto and later released. His parents on the other hand were not as exciting. His father was a ranch hand, nothing special, and his mother was a native girl who the rancher sold live stock to her people.

Ernesto has longed for excitement and danger all his life. The rancher that his father worked for taught him to shoot and protect the land. At the age of ten he was going on on the range with his father and taking down bands of outlaws and natives trying to steal there cattle. He became tired of the ranch life and decided to join the Mexican military. There, he was taught the discipline he needed to go out and find his adventure.

After his training, and time served in the military, he move to the United States. Seeing a need for people like himself to protect those heading west. Now is is a contract guard, working protection for caravans headed for gold.

Ernesto is family oriented. He doesnt have one of his own, but understands the importance of it. He is out looking for adventure and excitement. He is thoughtfull went it comes to situation of danger.

Nathaniel "Lucky" Calhoun

 

Name: Nathaniel “Lucky” Calhoun

Race: Caucasian, with clear Dutch decent.

Basic Class: Charasmatic Hero
Occupation: Outlaw

Background: Nathaniel doesn’t have that cheap luck that people say you have when you win at cards or find a couple bits on the ground. Nor does any one agree that he particularly good fortuned all of the time. No, Calhoun’s a man who lady luck helps out when he’s down to the felt, the kind of luck that gets remembered. The kind of fortune that earns a man the name “lucky”

Born in the outer edge of Ohio to a seamstress and factory worker, and with three brothers, spare pieces of bread were scarce and happy times even rarer. Situations like these do not raise happy households. They don’t bring good morals along either; no matter how many times a desperate mother tries to instill them, much to the chagrin of the father, a professional swindler in his spare five hours of time. By the time the boys had become young men, each one knew how to cheat, lie, and swindle just about as well as any con man or snake oil salesman. They had settled into the city of Columbus, setting up a phony card house just the way daddy would have wanted it. Nathaniel personally cheated the working Joes out of every bit they made.

Now, there’s only so many times a man can have his wallet lightened before he gets wise to the trick. And when that man is an officer of the law, one better be prepared for a whooping. Out one back door, a back alley brawl, and two forty four rounds later, and one Calhoun brother, Franklin, lay dead, the other, Timothy, sent to prison for assaulting a U.S Marshall. Nathaniel escaped, thanks to the clumsiness of his brothers, or his own fool luck, and fled to Indiana. There, he spent a few years in a drunken fugue, getting kicked out of poker tables for indecent behavior, and generally being a burden to the rest of society. When people started flocking west, with rumors of gold mountains stuck in their fool heads, Nathaniel followed. A sucker migration like that only comes around once a generation, and he didn’t want to miss out.

Description: A soft face, with baby blue eyes and dirty blonde locks make Nathaniel look like an innocent choir boy, with his damaged skin and wisp of a goatee giving away his age. But that’s just part of his slow, easy charm. His nose is short and goes well with his large and toothy mouth; one of his canines is filled with gold. He’s short, only about five foot nine, and rather gangly. His hands are soft, having refused to do much true work in his life. His skin does suffer from exposure; he doesn’t take good care of himself when he’s in one of his slumps. He wears an old flat cap on his head, fingerless gloves, a shorter then average duster, heavy leather pants, and those good old hide boots that last for miles.

Motivations/Goals/Personality: Calm, quiet, but most likely drunk, Nathaniel is an easy going man who doesn’t like to make waves. He perfectly content to let everything settle out on its own, provided it doesn’t come spilling onto his plate. A rough child hood led to an infatuation with money, something that he goes lengths for. Not with work though, he’d never work for cash. Games of his are his forte, especially rigged ones that leave him holding all the chips. He went west to avoid the law, but he might find a nastier side to it out in the frontier, his tendency to make people steaming mad after skimming their money assures it.

Samuel Jenkins was born to William and Ann Jenkins in a small, budding town in Ohio. He was the first child born in the town and was associated with new change and prosperity as the birth of a child meant that the city was fit for one. Years later, more and more children were born as other couples got married and had children of their own; more and more individuals looking for a new home brought their children to the Ohio town as well, thus allowing it to blossom even more.

Samuel exhibited his superior intellect at a young age. He was very intelligent and mastered everything his parents taught him within a matter of hours. They sent him to school when he was eight years old and he thought it was the best thing to ever happen to him. Samuel adored school more than anything he had ever known up to that point. He requested more homework from his teacher to further expand his knowledge, and eventually his teacher ended up giving him schoolwork meant for children much older than he was. By the time he was eleven, Samuel was at the intellectual level of a sixteen or seventeen year old. But without any other means of learning, Samuel was forced to help his father.

Samuel's father was a corn and wheat farmer, and he owned a very large farm in which to grow his crops. He had inherited a small fortune from a great uncle and used it to buy a large plot of land and raise a family in Ohio. Samuel became his father's farmhand and did everything his fathered asked of him. Samuel did not possess the best physique for one of his age when he started the manual labor, but soon his strength grew and he became almost as strong as his father when he entered his teen years. But even though he helped his father from sunrise to sunset every day, Samuel yearned for more. He was tired of seeing the same sight every day and wanted to get out and see the world.

This was before Vanessa came.

Beautiful, simple and shy, Vanessa Pickett was the daughter of a wealthy banker named Christian Pickett. Christian Pickett was opening a bank in the town and decided to move there for a 'change of pace'. When the Picketts moved in to town, Samuel was fifteen years old and Vanessa was fourteen. Samuel went out of his way to go into town and try to see Vanessa for six months before finally deciding to talk with her. A year later they were closer than any other couple in town and were madly in love. Vanessa's father approved of Samuel because he admired his intelligence and his father's prosperous farm, and allowed Samuel to court his daughter with his blessing. Samuel and Vanessa were beyond happy.

But misfortune struck one Thursday afternoon. A cavalry of men rode into town and forced all of the boys in the town who were sixteen or older to enlist in the army. Samuel had just turned seventeen and was forced to enlist, but he knew something didn't seem right and was very reluctant to do so. The military men told Samuel and the other boys in town that they were only enlisting for a one month stint in the army to help combat a rise of natives out west. Samuel left two days later, promising Vanessa that he would return and they would get married with the money he would earn from being in the army.

The military lied. They were short on men and had no intention of relieving the boys of the small Ohio town of duty. Samuel didn't discover this until he was in the middle of North America on his way to Texas, and by then it was too late. He regrettably put everything he had into being the best soldier he could be because he thought it would allow him to get back to Vanessa faster. He became the best shot in his regiment, the best tactician, and the bravest soldier anyone had ever seen.

After five years in the army, Samuel requested to be relieved of his duty and to return him. His request was denied; he was 'too fine of a soldier', they had said, and forced him to stay. But Samuel did not listen; his heart yearned for Vanessa and the family he desperately wanted. A few days after being denied his leave, Samuel left anyway. He rode wagons and horses and even walked all the way back to Ohio. He was dead tired when he returned home but his desire to see Vanessa urged him forward. He went to Vanessa's home only to find it empty; it was midday and she was probably at the bank. Rushing to the bank, Samuel only found Vanessa's father behind the counter.

"Vanessa.. isn't here," he told Samuel with a face that showed both sorrow and worry. "She went to California to help my sister who has fallen ill. I hope you.. Jay-Jay! Jay-Jay, where are you going?"

Samuel never heard what Mister Pickett said; he left the bank and never turned back. He went to his home and retrieved a few belongings, all the while not allowing his parents to see him, and resumed his journey to California. He had deserted the military and turned his back on his home town to find the girl he loved. She meant everything to him, and he was willing to give up everything for her.

"I'm coming, Vanessa."

 

Tall, lean and very attractive, Samuel possesses the features of a battle hardened yet emotional man. He has dark-brown hair that he only allows to grow a few inches before trimming. Samuel didn't grow a beard until the last few months of his military service when somehow talked into it. He doesn't mind it too much; but if anything, his new beard has provided a new disguise which will allow him to search for Vanessa and not have to worry about being seen.

Samuel's clothes are a mix between soldier and outlaw, as if his life is trying to blend the two together. He has foregone his blue Union jacket but kept his dark Union pants, to which he pairs with a white long-sleeved shirt, dusty and dirty from travels, and a brown vest over-top of that. He managed to obtain a brown wide-brimmed hat on his trek back to see Vanessa and he wears it as well.

 

Motivations: Samuel wants to go to California to find Vanessa and marry her. He knows of the Gold Rush and would not mind getting some of the gold to help start a family, but his primary concern is to find Vanessa. Nothing else really matters to him at the moment.

Goals: A family. Samuel isn't a bad guy, just a young man whose journey through life has taken a left turn instead of a right. He would not mind becoming a school teacher, but a life on a ranch is not definitely out of the question.

Personality: Samuel is usually a relatively pleasant individual, yet life has been hard on him as of late. He's friendly, caring and supportive, and even used to go out of his way in the military to aid another soldier even under a hailstorm of bullets. As of late, though, especially after learning that Vanessa was in California, Samuel appears to be a man of desperation and solitude. He does talk to others when confronted or needs information, but he's taken on a more quiet demeanor and keeps to himself a bit more than usual.
