What: Heard about Gnoll raiders form an overheard conversation at the Inn.
__________________Who: Paisley, Ileyna, and Rudy have heard this. Detail: Food is getting scarce in Loulan because of the raiders terrorizing the caravans. The Minutemen are likely looking for assistance to guard the carovans. Minna wants Vic to give the people a Hero and inspire everyone, but he says that is a job for the Minutemen. "I hear Eyran Tullik, the human merchant, is planning a logging expedition into the Valewood. They'll need loggers and guards both, and you must be from around that region, right? You can talk to him, his office is right down the street, fourth house, green-painted door. Honest, simple physical work, but good pay for it."
__________________What: Logging expedition Who: Lunnerai Details: Eyran Tullik is planning a logging expedition into the Valewood, needing both loggers and guards. The pay is good. Source: Word of mouth from a dwarven wainwright in the commercial district. -Year 105, month 7, week 5, day 1. 19:40:00 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Above the host's talk the conversation Lunnerai picks up has turned again to caravans falling victim to gnoll raids: a party of tough-looking dwarves, humans, a gnome and one halfling seated at one table are discussing whether they should form an adventuring group to go after the reward offered for stopping the raids. One thing the city is not short on is gold, and from the sounds of it the reward will be generous, though the number is not disclosed." What: Mercenary work to stop the gnoll raids. Who: Lunnerai Details: There is a reward offered for anyone who stops the gnoll raids. There are some characters discussing forming a group to go after the reward. Source: Word of mouth at the Malthouse. -Year 105, month 7, week 5, day 1. 20:20:00 Completed What: Searching for the root of the gnoll raids. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Kairon [the tiefling] too has become concerned by all the talk of raids in the area, and with some of his mercenary guards leaving him at Loulan, he intends to hire about a half-dozen more warriors to increase his guard for the next stretch of his trip, towards the Valewood. Lunnerai understands that he'll be in town for several more days buying and selling before heading out that way, and will keep an ear open for soldiers-for-hire." What: Mercenary work to guard a merchant. Who: Lunnerai Details: Kairon, the tiefling merchant, is looking to hire half a dozen mercenaries to help protect him on the next stretch of his trip, towards the Valewood. Source: Word of mouth from Kairon himself at the Malthouse. -Year 105, month 7, week 5, day 1. 23:00:00 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "It all started in a tavern just like this one. It might have been this one, even. Those fearless explorers of the Underdark were fed up with mining metal for 'the man', and after too many drinks and a wild dare, went out to seek their own fortunes. They tried to prospect the previously unexplored caves of the Menain range, but encountered horrible monsters there. Long story short, those cunning heroes defeated the brutes and it turned out looting their ill-gotten treasure was more profitable than mining would ever have been. The dwarven Companions included smiths and a cleric of Moradin, and they crafted wondrous armor and weapons to grant their non-dwarf friends the benefits of the doughty dwarven race. The Aleheart Companions have long gone from this world, except for our songs and stories, but some of their gear is bound to have been discarded in the deepest caverns under the Menain." What: The gear of the Aleheart Companions Who: Lunnerai Details: The Aleheart Companions may have left their magical gear "in the depest caverns under the Menain." Source: Drunken, hypothetical word of mouth at the Malthouse. -Year 105, month 7, week 5, day 1. 23:00:00 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "[D]o you think that's true, about this having been a tiefling city, in the way-back-when there was such a thing as a Turathi Empire?" His companion snorts. "If it were, the sewers would be paved in gold and platinum, and Bill would have come up wearing an enchanted crown. Hah! Maybe that's what broke his fall, a huge pile of ancient tiefling gold, and that's why he's been so generous with the ale tonight." What: Riches left behind by the tiefling empire Who: Lunnerai Details: If Loulan was built by the tieflings, there is a slight chance that the sewers are paved with gold and platinum and other riches. Source: Drunken, hypothetical word of mouth at the Malthouse. -Year 105, month 7, week 5, day 1. 23:00:00 Wow, am I being a bit too meticulous? Perhaps. Perhaps not. I seem to recall a previous game with Noc in which I gained some information on a magical cloak because of my meticulous notes. Too bad I bought it and then didn't need it... Character of interest for Briar - Kristoff J. Gubblebum. As she hasn't actually made it into Loulan yet, he may be an important contact in the future.

Natural History of Rain's Shadow and Surrounding Areas
__________________by Briar Wildpaw Krenshar Powerful hunting creatures with catlike agility and strong limbs. Their ability to peel back their faces to expose their skulls is a defense mechanism, which combined with their savage roars, freezes most foes in terror. Krenshars roam the plains, and range as far as the nearby hills and woodlands in small groups called prides. Krenshars born with blood red spots on their hides become guardians of the pride, while other krenshars act as hunters and caregivers to young. Gnolls, hobgoblins, and humans often try to trap and domesticate krenshars for use as war beasts, exploiting their ability to frighten even the bravest enemies. Trainers are often injured or even killed while taming them, because repressing a stressed krenshar's instinct to reveal its skull is difficult. Hyenas Hyenas are fast-moving pack hunters and scavengers with black-spotted orange coats, commonly regarded as cowardly, gluttonous, filthy, and destructive beasts. In the wild, these animals keep the Cala an Darh clean of carcasses. These hyenas are covered in filth and flies, like their masters. Gnolls often keep hyenas as pets and hunting animals. They are much easier for the gnolls to train and teach commands to than krenshar, and considerably less dangerous even though their jaws can crush bone. In groups, hyenas have been known to drive off other carnivores including krenshars from their kills. Like gnolls, hyenas attack with much less timidity when they can gang up on one target at a time. Their unnerving vocalizations, foul odor, and snapping jaws make them impossible to ignore in melee combat, and so the gnolls use them to distract enemies and create openings to attack. Fearful pair of eyes can be seen peeking out from the inside of the fourth wagon? Is there slaving going on, perhaps? We should check it out.

The story so far
__________________By Luciano, Biographer and Bard Evening, Day 1 of week 5, month 7, the year 105 FN The progressive trade city of Loulan encountered some trouble with aggressive gnoll raids, which have stopped vital goods and foodstuffs from getting into the city. The city offered a reward for stopping the raids. At a "retirement party" for Bill the Clanker in the Malthouse tavern, Bill, a wild shifter woman known as Wind, the mercenary Paisley, and two fey newcomers to the city, Lunnerai and Ileyna, decide to form an adventuring party to go after the reward. Ileyna named the group the Band of the Hawk. Drunk and determined, they retired to the Clockwork Hero inn for the night. Day 2 of week 5, month 7, the year 105 FN Morning: Ileyna suggested the group find a noble sponsor to help them get started. They met with Lord Gavron Reidesel, a nobleman with interests in the food trade, who agreed to support their endeavor and ensure they are duly rewarded. In return, they promised to help protect his investment in an incoming caravan. Noon: The Band left town around noon and met up with the expected food caravan. It was promptly attacked by a large band of gnoll raiders attacking in waves. The defenders fought them off, chased the retreating raiders and slew them to prevent any alarm being given to their home camp. Afternoon: The Band captured one gnoll prisoner, but he was less than cooperative, and blew himself up with alchemical bombs secreted on his person, singeing most of his captors. The party collected more of these alchemical weapons from bodies. They had also been used in the raids, and could not have been of gnoll manufacture. Finding the trail of the gnoll raiding party, they marched through the afternoon towards their camp. Evening: The party came upon an interim camp used by the raiders. They foraged unsuccessfully for food in the evening, and slept at night, but got disease from close proximity to the unsanitary gnoll camp. Day 3 of week 5, month 7, the year 105 FN Morning: Feeling ill, the Band slept and rested again until they all felt better. Day: They marched all day, arriving at the gnoll camp after nightfall. Night: After a full day's march, the heroes launched a surprise attack, slaying the gnoll chieftain, their best fighter, and their bodyguards and weird undead helpers. This climatic battle broke the spine of the gnoll tribe. After brief questioning of the villagers and a search of the camp, the heroes took their well-earned sleep. Fight them at night. Days 4 of week 5, month 7, the year 105 FN Several crates of valuables were found at the gnoll camp. Leaving Bill and Lunnerai to guard the encampment until the goods could be retrieved, Ileyna, Wind, and Paisley began their march back to town in the morning. They foraged in the late afternoon, before sleeping that night in the field. Meanwhile the men conducted a more thorough search of the camp for valuable items or clues. Days 5 of week 5, month 7, the year 105 FN Morning: The women of the Band of the Hawk resumed their march to Loulan in the morning, arriving at the city gates at noon. Noon: Anxious to wash the trail dust off them and make themselves presentable for meeting with their sponsor, the women took a bath in one of Loulan's finer bathhouses. Open quests:
__________________The Town Watch are attempting to track a male elf magic-user wearing a red cloak, a backpack, and several bags, who was seen fleeing from the bombing scene at Quensh cul-de-sac in Loulan. There is reason to suspect this elf was connected with the bombing, a burglary of Lorilla Tannermoil's shop, and/or in outfitting gnolls with alchemical weapons. Wren Reidesel has asked Wind to look into possible mining disruptions in two mines in the Forensh mountain range. Their supply of ore has dwindled lately more than can be explained by the amount of ore found in the gnoll camp. Gavron Reidesel has left a note at Paisley's house suggesting a job to investigate the disappearance of loggers who were prospecting new logging sites in the Valewood. She has shared this information with Ileyna. These disappearances are very likely related to the big green dragon dwelling in the area. Kairon the tiefling merchant is looking for guards for his caravan headed from Loulan across the Cala an Darh into the Valewood. Paisley has shared this information with Ileyna (and Lunnerai already knows about it, see above.) The Band of the Hawk have carried out this escort mission and received payment for it. Lianwen Reidesel has left a dead-drop note asking Tharkos to look into why the city of Perelin has denied loggers from Loulan permission to expand into a section of the Valewood that is far from where they'd normally exert control. Mercenaries working for Bofrid have threatened and attempted to capture Wind, after she wounded two of them while escaping their clutches weeks ago. Wren Reidesel has also warned about this possibility, and that they may try to make life difficult for her in Loulan. Simply killing them would run afoul of the city's law enforcement, so a more subtle or diplomatic approach may be wanted to resolve the situation for good. Feel free to add more. Well, still not a clear answer (what could I expect from rolling a 19, one less than what was very possibly the DC...), but it might be enough clues that I should remember it for later. Last edited by nai888; 07-16-2012 at 12:56 AM. |
