If I am off on this then it was a mistake...can someone clear this up?

Those are referring to the first group. A second group, the Gnoll leader and the two archers, showed up right AFTER that. We're still fighting them.

That's the risk when playing with a brand new DM. It's a very big time investment, and sometimes people underestimate the commitment necessary.
