How Do You Play D&D Online?

Hey, I'm new to the site, and relativley new to D&D, I was wondering how you play D&D online ie: what's different, what happens etc.

EDIT: Normally the way it works is;

You apply to an advertisement in this thread.
You then build you character according to the DM's guidlines for the game.
Write your background and wait to see if you are chosen for the game.

Or you can make you character and post an advertisement in this thread.
Then wait to see if a "DM" asks you to join thier game.
