Kobold Hall
The Lord Warden of Fallcrest has issued a bounty on kobolds, and sought adventurers willing to do whatever it takes to put a stop to the attacks. A band of five would-be heroes have agreed to take up the task together, and the Lord Warden has offered them 100 gold coins if they can bring back proof that the threat has been terminated. Some of the caravans carried rare items of great value, and the Lord Warden has asked you to retrieve them if you can. In addition to the approbation of the town and a 200gp reward, he will let you keep any unclaimed treasure in the keep. The five make the journey to the Kobold Hall, only about 15 miles from town along the road. Fortunately and somewhat surprisingly, they do not get eaten by a bear on the way. The Cloak Wood has encroached on the grounds: the walls of the keep are covered with vines and crumbling from neglect, and trees grow wild in abandoned courtyards and gardens. The adventurers note wheel tracks in the soft earth leading to smashed-up wagons near one building, and find the entrance to the underground cellars of the ruins where the kobolds likely dwell. The door has rotted away years ago. Drawing their weapons, the five descend the staircase into the gloom... Dominating the room ahead is a long trench, about 10 feet deep and filled with a glowing green substance that lights up the chamber around it. Beyond the trench, a small, reptilian humanoid stands before a shadowy chamber, gaping at you. The creature is no more than four feet tall and hisses when it sees you. ![]() The reptilian produces a sling from somewhere, and quickly reaches into a pouch at its belt for a stone. It fumbles to load it in the sling, and swings the empty weapon in the general direction of the party as the stone clatters uselessly to the ground at its feet. Laughing at this ineptitude, the heroes draw their weapons and battle is joined! Last edited by Nocturnal; 07-27-2010 at 11:16 AM. |

Still laughing, Chant moves closer to the kobold, pulling a shuriken from behind his belt. "Easy coin kobold, thats all you are." Chant spins, his cloak flying in a wide arc as the shuriken speeds towards the kobold's eye.

The shuriken streaks accurately towards the little guard's face, not quite hitting the eye but leaving a long, bloody gash all across its cheek. That will surely leave a nasty scar! The creature yelps in pain and fear. It didn't even see the attack coming.

Erik sneers at the kobold and advances. Upon setting his feet Erik curses the kobold and attacks with hellish flames that violently erupt around the kobold.

Thoradin lets out a sigh as he watches the barbarian go charging past him, "He's bound to be the death of me" he looks at the sole kobold then around the room as he then moves up to try to keep up with the goliath gripping the handle on his warhammer tightly.

Walking slowly and minding his step but surely towards J9 Merric prepares the spell 'Sacred Flame' for use if any enemy comes into range. As the Barbarian charges past Merric cheers him on 'Go on! Chop his head off!' he says with a small chuckle.

As Aukan rushes into the chamber, he spots a pair of kobolds hiding behind an iron portcullis in the corridor he passes on the right. It is in fact mostly rust. One of the small creatures easily squeezes through the portcullis bars and moves in to attack him when he shows himself, but not before the sentry takes advantage of his momentary distraction to slip back a step.
These kobolds are sneaky critters! The slinger loads a little clay jar into his sling, spins it around, and lobs it at the group of adventurers amassed at the front of the room. Once again however, he fails to load the sling properly and the jar falls at his feet to roll into the pit in the center of the room, where it hits the bottom with an audible plop! Who thought it would be a good idea to give this terrible shot a sling? The others chitter at it angrily in their own language, and Erik can understand most of the words: it is Draconic, the language of dragons and many other intelligent reptilians. "You pathetic nincompoop!" They berate him. "This is why we put you here on guard to be the first to get killed! What kind of a kobold can't even load a stone into a sling? Your mother was a mammal and your claws are sausages!" Some of them aren't shouting any words but seem to be laughing at their companion's ill-luck. Aukan can hear them chittering from the alcove beyond. One of the kobolds leaps out of there, wearing a small armor suit of cured hide and wielding a spear in both hands. The newcomer rapidly trades places with the slinger who flees, apparently abashed, into the cover. As the little ones sneak underfoot around Aukan, the goliath is unable to whack them with his axe but Merric is prepared: the halfling lets loose a bolt of radiant energy that should sear the kobold. Unfortunately his aim is just a little off, and all it does is light up the far wall as the fast-moving kobold slips past. Fortunately for Aukan, these must be the unluckiest creatures who ever lived. The kobold might have been trying to stab his foot with the spear, but was so surprised by the holy flame that he skids towards the edge of the pit and nearly topples right into it! Flailing his arms for balance, the kobold is unable to attack. The hulking goliath barbarian towers over the little kobold, many times his size. The small creatures know that the only way they can bring down such large enemies is by excellent teamwork. They baited the trap and now they spring it to good effect. Within seconds, Aukan is surrounded as two more of the creatures come at him from both sides, stabbing at him in the legs with their spears. The attacks are not enough to seriously injure him, but they are certainly annoying. Aukan and the others can tell they are more dangerous than they look when they work together. A second kobold slinger remains in cover behind the portcullis, and lobs a stone at him. This one at least knows how to load its sling, but either it is afraid to shoot into the melee where its allies are fighting, or it has difficulty aiming through the bars, and either way the stone sails past Aukan to crash into the wall, chipping off flecks of old stone. Now that they have shown themselves the question is, will our heroes be able to support the barbarian before he gets himself in deeper trouble? |

Erik sees Aukan surrounded and mumbles, "Always the brash one" Erik then leaps into action. He moves to a better position and strikes out at Aukan's attackers with dark power. Arching shadows stream from Erik's right hand and plunge into the kobold's chest.

Chant curses as the kobolds appear from their hiding places. Apparently, Chant had not considered the difference between smart and clever when he took the job. Drawing a dagger, he rushes to the barbarians aid. "Aukan, I think it will be better if we kill them quickly, one at a time. The faster they die the less they can stab us!" Chant stabs at the lone skirmisher in the corner, watching the spear for any surprises.

The kobold's frightened screams echo through the chamber as Erik curses it and drains most of its life force from its body, using it to feed his own power. He seems to grow stronger as he saps the little creature's energy, nearly killing it on the spot. "Help me, stop him! Stop them! Help!" he can hear the kobold scream in Draconic.
Chant goes around the other way, joining Aukan and boxing another kobold in with a sharp slash of his dagger. With so little room to maneuver, the creature cannot evade the attack. The small blade inflicts only a minor wound, but the kobold is clearly not happy at being pinned in the corner and its beady eyes dart around already looking for an escape path. Aukan screams a gutteral angry roar;

Lets out a sigh as he goes after the barbarian watching him take some strikes, 'Silly Oaf probably didn't feel a thing'. Thoradin comes up right behind Aukan watching the melee play out. Sensing the first ones end is upon him he switches his gaze over to the second skirmisher then calls upon his divine powers to strike at the beast. A bright light shines down from above striking his foe. He spends a few extra moments trying to gather information on the creature shaking his head quickly coming up with nothing, 'Well that's a start i suppose, now lets get you patched up a bit big guy'. Focusing on his clerical work he mutters a spell healing his seemingly suicidal friend. Muttering to himself 'I swear theres not enough spells in the world...'

Moving to J-8 Merric takes aim at the Kobold #1 across the pit from him. Bring his hand forward he releases a bolt of shimering gold towards the kobolds chest. (Sacred Flame) With a brilliant aim the bolt slams into the Kobolds chest igniting him in holy flames screaming in draconian as he burns, a shimmering gold sparkle lights up Aukan granting him +3 Temp. HP (or a saving throw) making his wounds seem less apparant.

The goliath calls on the natural resilience of his race to turn away blows, his skin turning hard as stone, and strikes a glancing blow in revenge for the one that struck him. The impact moralizes him.
The armored clerics march in and lay waste to their enemies with beams of searing light. Thoradin's ray of holy light incinerates the already weakened enemy, for the first fatality of this adventure. Its body topples into the pit with a splash. He also takes the time to heal the barbarian with a short prayer, perfectly enough to restore him to full health and resilience. This will only teach him that it's safe to be reckless, the dwarf worries. He also examines the enemies, trying to figure out what manner of creatures they are. Thoradin is not sure this is really a kobold. He thinks it might be a young dragon, or a crocodile. Perhaps an armadillo. Those wield spears, right? It must be an armadillo. Merric blasts the one trapped in the corner and attempts to transfer some restorative energy to bolster the goliath, but Aukan is already so invigorated from the rush of his own attack, the extra boost does nothing for him. That seriously injured kobold seems to see they cannot defeat these large enemies easily, and clearly wants no more of this fight, but cannot escape past the portcullis because the adventurers have blocked the way. It painstakingly dodges and shifts past attacks, trying to pull back to the shadowed chamber beyond and holding its spear out to defend itself against further attack. Its companion slips away from the large group of enemies, darting around the pit to stab Erik and retreat after causing a minor scratch. The near-death sentry pokes his head out of the chamber to fling a little white container of something at Erik, before dodging back in to hide. This time, it has finally learned to load its sling properly, and the unexpected attack crashes into Erik's legs. The pot shatters in pieces, covering the half-elf's legs with a softly glowing green substance that looks similar to that which fills the pit dominating this room. The sludge soon solidifies, sticking him fast to the ground: the warlock cannot move! The slinger behind the portcullis realizes that they are being overwhelmed. It lobs a similar clay pot at Thoradin and retreats down the hall, either leaving its allies to their fate or calling for more reinforcements. You can see a lever embedded into the wall of that tunnel which the creature passes. The projectile shatters on the dwarf's armor and he too is stuck in place until he can free himself.
