Father Paul stares at the burning town hall. By Pelor.... What happened? Just then Judge Manus climbed through the window. Father Paul moves immediately to help Byron with the judge. As he got closer, he pulls out his bandages and salves to help the judge.

"I am here," Father Paul says, wheezing as he approached. I'm not as young as once was Father Paul laments to himself. Father Paul kneels over Judge Manus and says in a melodic voice, "Ur wnelay Qelhun. Helct sel zuon ract ic relahicw yril luoh"

Father Paul's necklace begins to glow around his neck. The symbol of Pelor shined with a bright white light and a tingle of magic surrounded Father Paul as he channeled divine power to heal Judge Manus. The light began to fade a little as the wound on Judge Manus's shoulder stopped bleeding. Father Paul rips the clothing around the wound to give him full access. Father Paul then pulls a salve from his bag and applies it to the bleeding wound. After he is done applying the salve, he pulls out some bandages and wraps his wounds.

OOCI cast cure light wounds and then make a heal check. Here are my rolls

Orson and Byron pull Magnus away from the fire as Father Paul casts his spell. Once the deed is done, Magnus feels the pain wash away from his shoulder as his skin knits itself back together. Though he still looks a mess and his lungs burn from the soot, the aging judge appears to be back to full health.

The majority of the town now present, they stand back and watch in awe as the small figure of Breck grasps the burning handles to the large entryway. With a great tug, she peals the door back and belch of flame and smoke spouts forth searing the Town Hall's great entrance arch. The young lady barely avoids being scorched to ribbons herself, though she still feels

the edges of the flames. Unperturbed, the sixteen year old girl peers inside: the once grand entrance hall caters now to melting walls and a blackened ceiling. The waiting room's door burns hotly and the stairs leading to the Mayor's quarters are destroyed. The entrance hall and the north-south hallway connecting to the various other rooms and Yoril's cellar in the Town Hall appears to be navigable - though incredibly dangerous. Rafters and supports continue to blaze and collapse as the town watches... the stone hull of the building crackling under the intense orange-red heat.

The blacksmith Orson lifts up his head as Breck prepares to run inside, "Ye daft girl, stay away from there!" - his words barely audible over the engorged fire's roar.

Ben and William arrive shortly after Jennavoia, passing by a saucer eyed pair of Wolbrooks.

Yoril's likely still in 'ere, and if what Penny said is right, 'e might be the only one who knows anythin' about the missin' kids. I can't turn back!

Breck pulls her wet coat up over her mouth and nose in hopes that it might shield protect her from the smoke. She risks a glance at the blazing rafters above, then dashes down the hall toward the steps that lead down to Yoril's cellar. Yoril, she calls, get your fool self out of this burnin' buildin'!

As his trusted friend runs headlong into the blazing edifice, Sigurd screams, "Breck! No!" at the top of his lungs.

[SECRT="moth"]It suddenly dawns upon the young boy that someone may have been trying to murder Yoril. The old astrologer supposedly knew something about the witch, and Breck and Sigurd had been on their way to speak with him this very morning. The witch might have been trying to keep the young folk from finding out too much! But the only person who knew they would be arriving was the old judge, Magnus![/SECRET]The villagers are actually surprised to see Sigurd toss the old judge a glare that hints more of suspicion then hatred! Then fighting back the tears, Sigurd yells into the building, "Breck, I'm on my way!" With that, the villagers see the young boy plunge into the building after his friend!

Magnus pulls himself away from the burning building as fast as he can, barely registering when Byron and Orson run up to him. His lungs burn, and every movement sends jolts of pain through his shoulder and down his arm. Clenching his teeth against the pain the old judge soldiered on. "Ben..." he managed to choke out between coughs. He had to find the old guard. He could barely think straight from the heat and the smoke, but Magnus knew he had to find Ben Hope. He had to know.

He clutches the box he had salvaged from his desk tight to his chest and reaches out to pull himself along when he feels himself lifted up and dragged away from the fire. Magnus blinks to try and clear away the tears the smoke had caused to fill his eyes, but it was little use. Blurry shapes and muffled words were all the judge could make out in the state he was in. "Ben... g... get B-" he tried to say before breaking down into a coughing fit that nearly made him throw up. He could not help but cry out as the coughs wracked his body, causing his would to send needles throughout his entire arm.

More mumbling. A different voice this time, perhaps. Magnus could not tell. But suddenly the pain from his shoulder was gone. That seemed to open the floodgate, as Magnus' body, worn out from the escape from the fire and already tired from the late night and little sleep, all but collapses. Suddenly, Magnus felt every one of his fifty long years come crashing down upon him and it was all the old judge could do not not pass out right there. Forcing himself to stay conscious despite the protests from his aching head, Magnus reaches up with the arm that wasn't covered in bandages and attempts to wipe his eyes clear. All he really manages to accomplish is smear the soot and sweat around on his face, getting even more into his poor eyes. Grunting at the stinging this causes Magnus gave up on that for now.

"Thank y-" he tries to thank whoever it was who had carried him, but trying to talk only caused him to start to cough again.

For a moment William stares at the inferno that had been the town hall with an expression of utter shock. The heat from the burning building made the winter's cold bearable without his usual warm clothing, but that is a small silver lining around what is undoubtedly a terrible tragedy. With a slack jaw and wide eyes the old trapper looks up at the towering plume of smoke as it rises into the early morning sky. As his limbs go slack the crossbow in his hand falls to brush the snow, the hunter's slack grip barely maintains its hold on the weapon.

"What happened here?" he murmurs.

He takes a few short, stumbling steps towards the blazing building, his crossbow trailing through the melting snow. His hands tremble, but whether from fear or the cold who can say? He falls forward onto his knees. He slumps forward and catches himself with his hands. His fingers clench a fistful of snow and he beats a meaty fist against the earth. He arches back and roars up at the sky.

"What happened here!"

He pounds his fist against the earth once more and stays still for a moment. Finally, having regained his composure, the old trapper rises slowly to his feet. He looks around at the assembled crowd and scowls. What happened here? The trapper took notice of the small group, along with the priest, gathered around an injured man, though the trapper couldn't tell who it was from here. Just as William takes his first step towards that gathering he hears young Sigurd shout something. The sound of the boy's voice brings William to jerk his head in that direction, just in time to see the young lad vanish into the blazing building.

His eyes go wide. "Damned fool boy!" he shouts after the child's retreating back. Even as he yells however, the old man's feet begin to carry him swiftly after Sigurd. His knuckles pale as his grip on his crossbow tightens. With great bounding strides the old trapper rushes over to the town hall's ruined entrance. "What in all the hells do you think you're doing?" he calls out, even as he rushes past the threshold and into the burning building himself.

"This is madness!"

The crowd gasped as young Sigurd and William the trapper both disappeared into the inferno.

Orson patted Magnus on his newly healed shoulder, "Quiet now, quiet - I'll get Ben for ye." The old Captain had hurried to the front and nearly had gone in after William - though he recognized the irony of his impulses. He tarried behind and ran over to Orson's calls instead.

"Magnus! What happened! Is anyone else still inside??" a stroke of panic touched Ben's voice - he had only been Captain for four days and already the Town Hall was burning to the ground...

Magnus turns towards the source of Ben's voice. His eyes were still watery from the soot but he could make out the old guard, even it is did look as though he was standing behind warped glass. Struggling up to a sitting position, a difficult task when your arms felt as if they were made of limp rope, Magnus tries to speak but simply breaks down into a coughing fit again, nearly buckling over forward. He shakes his head as he coughs, to ward away any who tried to help him. Managing to bring himself back under control the old judge shakes his head, panting audibly from the exertion he felt. Light he was tired. "Swinson..." Magnus says absently, as if his mind and mouth had trouble forming the word. He was still trying to understand for himself what had happened in his office. "Swinson," he says again, sounding more certain this time.

Magnus could hardly believe what was happening. It did not seem real somehow. His eyes seemed to have sorted out themselves, and Magnus could finally see clearly again. The town hall spewing fire and smoke into the sky looked to him as some great evil beast wreathed in flames, laughing with delight. Forcing himself to look away from the fire, magnus looked down to make sure the box he had carried out was still with him. Magnus sighed with obvious relief to see it lying just beside him. He picked it up, taking comfort from its smooth wood surface. "He's gone mad, Ben." His head throbbed and he felt as if he might fall over at any moment but Ben had to know.

Magnus groped over feebly, and tugged on the guard's pant leg to make the old guard kneel down. He dared not speak what he had to say out loud, where everyone could hear. The town hall burning to the ground would be bad enough for the town. He did not need to incite panic as well.[SECRT="Bade,Cloudpiroth,Cidolfas,CrimsonKnight"]Magnus lowered his voice so that it would not carry beyond the immediate vicinity. Byron, Orson, and Father Paul were close enough that they would be able to hear as well, but Magnus did not feel like sending them away. They were sensible men. Hopefully they would know not to act foolishly. "The mayor is dead, Ben," Magnus manages to say. "I do not how or why. The... creature that Swinson has become could barely string two coherent sentences together long enough to say." Magnus shivered at the remembrance of the bestial smile that had been on Yoril's face. He doubted he would ever truly forget it. Another round of coughing caused the old judge to wince at the burning in his chest. Light, he was tired.[/SECRET]

Ben looked around for support, a scowl covering his scarred face. He didn't like what he saw. The village looked panicked, a few were crying, and William had already run headlong into the burning building after those asinine kids. At least Orson and Byron were here - trustworthy men - and the Father's healing had been proved useful already. Jennavoia was not too far off, but the night's events gave him pause. It would have been good to have Hertil and William here... Ben barked at Teffer Hearchil, he had been an old mining buddy of Hertil's, "Go get Hertil! We'll need his crossbow."

He looked to the others and spoke with authority, "Father, stay with Magnus and try to figure out just what in the Hells happened here. Byron, Orson, set up a perimeter around the building. Don't let anyone else near it - and keep an eye out for anything trying to get out..."

He thought for a moment and asked Magnus a final question, "What about that fool Eggle?"

Ben's head reeled - how could this all fall to pieces so quickly?

The villagers see Breck, William, and young Sigurd come out the building. Sigurd helps Breck sit on the ground, the girl seeming injured. Sigurd says a few inaudible words to William before shouting out to Father Paul, "Father Paul! Young Breck is hurt! I think its her ribs!" Sigurd then approaches Captain Hope, "Before you yell at me, we were tryin' to save old Yoril, because he knows somethin' very important about the witch. But now he's probably dead, and whatever he knew is gone!"

Breck reclines on the icy ground. Her ribs crack and pop with the slightest movement. She clutches herself, groans, coughs, and spits up black-tinged sputum. Stripping her goves off, Breck reveals that her right hand is also red and blistered. There was no answer from old Yoril when I called for 'i; 'e's either dead from the smoke or somethin' else-- or 'e's not in there.

Doubled over and hacking brackish phlegm onto the ground William can only wave a hand in a weak grasping motion as Sigurd runs off towards the Captain. It takes the trapper a moment to recover. When the coughing finally subsides William Fields stalks off after the foolish boy, scowling.

"Yell at you?" he snarls, walking up to the boy as he speaks with Captain Hope, "Boy, you think I'm going to yell at you? You think that after running headlong into a damned burning building that I'm just going to yell at you? I don't give a damn why you did it boy, I told you to stay out of trouble. I told you to stay out of trouble and running into a gods damned burning building is not staying out of trouble!" The old trapper shouts at the boy, heedless of the company around him. He raises his left hand up over his right shoulder and swings it down hard towards the troublesome lad's cheek.

His strike is cut short however, as the trapper is overtaken with a coughing fit. He hacks brackish phlegm into his palm and smears it onto his pant leg. He groans, then snarls at the boy. "So help me lad, if I see you do anything like that again then Cuthbert as my witness I will take a belt to you, you hear me boy?" The trapper's shoulders tremble as he snarls "I will not be the one to tell your mother that you went and got yourself killed. Understand? I will not do it, and I will beat you myself if you ever do something that might make me have to again. Now get yourself home, before I lose my damned temper".

Stumbling into the town square, Hertil was dumbstruck. A few minutes before he had been awkened from his slumber and the whole world seemed to have gone into lunacy. Shortly behind Heril was Teffer Hearchil and Penny Jerner, both looking aghast at the unfolding scene. So alarmed by the events at hand, Hertil had barely managed to get dressed, his clothes gathering in the snow, but the crossbow in his hands was cocked and appeared ready for whatever was needed.

"Sorry I was late all, Penny had stumbled into my cabin, upset and shivering. I didnt know that anything had occurred, well, well such as this." Walking over to Ben, Hertil whispered something to him discreetly and then setup on the edge of the square with Byron.

"Fools we be this day, eh Byron? To think we thought things had passed, Pelor I wish that had been true."

Catching sight of Penny Jerner, Breck forces herself to her feet and staggers toward the girl. Catching the child up in a powerful hug, Breck winces with pain. Penny, Penny, she coughs, Pelor am I glad to see you alive and kickin'.

Magnus wearily shakes his head, "I don't know Ben. probably lost as well if I had to guess."

Magnus watched as Breck, Sigurd and William came running out of the inferno. He should have been surprised, what on earth would possess them to run into a burning building? But he had no energy to feel anything other than weary. He would have reprimanded them, he should have, but he could not summon the words. Hopefully Ben would take care of that. The old guard had little patience for fools, and following that display, Magnus could not think of the two children as anything but.

He hacked up another mouthful of blackish phlegm and spit it out onto the ground.
