Alone now that the children are abed, Mercy paces the darkening house. She's laid the lantern by the window and stirred the hearth into a merry blaze, but still cannot help feeling afraid for her girl, Maggie. Looking out the window she can see the glow of lanterns and the faint, dark forms of those who search the cemetery. She touches her bible and hesitates. Surely the children would not wake. She could go in pretense of collecting Maggie...

Maggie winces at the fisherman's forceful manner. I don't know, Master Patrick. I've tried to not think about the man since he approached me. He, he just asked about the witch-- what we as a town knew, and what we were doing about it.

As Mercy approaches the cemetery, she notices the group of investigators huddled around a lantern light, peering into the darkness around them with expressions of pure horror on their faces. Mercy squints her eyes, trying to see what has the group so panicked. That is when she notices four shadowy figures standing just beyond the perimeter of the light, seemingly unable to get any closer to the group. The figures appear to be made of solid blackness, the light reflecting off of them instead of going through them. In fact, the light emanating from the lantern seems to get swallowed once it reaches the figures as if being sucked into a void. As Mercy approaches, the figures seem to recoil from the light of her lantern. She is able to safety join the group, and the increased light of the two lanterns keeps the things further at bay!

Caching sight of the holder of her indenture, Maggie picks up her skirts and runs to Mercy's side. Leaning close, she whispers in the woman's ears.

Mercy shudders in horror at Maggie's hissed words. The shadowy figures send tremors down her legs. Staring around at the men, she cries, "Why do you stay? Leave this place! Can you not see it is the devil's ground now?" Lantern swaying, she hesitates in following Maggie.

Patrick tries to grab ahold of the fleeing Maggie, but clearly misses. Maggie retreats through the darkness and out of the cemetery, seemingly unmolested by the shadowy figures. Everyone can see her make it safely into the village.
Richard begins calling out to his deceased loved ones, giving everyone an even more intense chill. The light from both lanterns keep the shadowy figures further at bay, but they still stand at the threshold of light and darkness. Suddenly, the shadowy figures start to back away from the light of the two lanterns! After a moment, they completely disappear into the darkness of the night! Leopold casts a glance at Mercy and the fleeing Maggie. It helped little that Richard had begun to call out to his deceased loved ones. A sense of relief washes over him as the fade back into the darkness. Come let us linger here no longer. He makes his way towards the exit.
__________________I have many more questions now than before. What is this business about the Agawam man visiting you and Maggie? his questions directed at Mercy. Did you not think it relevant to mention this at any point? Why would the shades frighten us nearly half to death if they intended to save us? They were clearly motioning for us to come with them. Yet they did not disturb Maggie. For what reasons I have yet to determine. |

Alternately depressed and happy that she had not heard Silas' voice, Mercy shivers and tries to pay attention to the Magister's questions. "I confess I had not thought to mention it because I believed he had come to beg use of Zeke... And Maggie, well, the girl would be easily frightened after what happened." She frowns. "You remember Silas and I had sought the Agawam out before, to give their children a proper Christian education. Though they are pagans, they have never bothered the cemetery, nor us in all this time." Then, anxious to clear Maggie of any suspicion, she adds, "The shades did not disturb me, either. I'm quite sure our faith kept us safe."

Patty straightens up feel a bit more relaxed now that the shades have left the area. I saw the savage after I left your office magistarte and he wore a wooden cross around his neck so he may be christian. I heard my fathers' voice and it was a warning but I know not if the shade spoke the words, I just heard them. It is strange that there was four shades and four graves, correct Richard? looking towards the village, I agree we should leave this place. Thinking out loud Patty says Does anyone know what the graveyard was before we started using it? What became of the savages, I believe that some must have lived here before we settled in this place?

Though Maggie can feel hands grasping for her (she has no idea if they are the hands of the dead or the living), she does not let them slow her mad run back toward the house. Chastity, Prudence, you have to be safe.

The group comprising Mercy, Richard, Rory, Patrick, and the Magistrate leave the cemetery, unmolested by the dark entities, and make it safely into town!
