My players can go ahead and roll initiative for the fight. If you don't want to fight for some reason, you don't have to. I still suggest you roll at least initiative though.

Hamms, everyone is together (of sorts) in the fountain area. Feel free to join in the combat, as I said that the cloaked man in front of you had joined the battle.

Thanks for the buff a1hamms, I am impressed that you just decided to buff a stranger about to wail on three people smaller than himself. Unfortunately it is not going to stop me from beating these guys into unconsciousness, at least not this round. Maybe next round, we'll see what happens. If they are still conscious after this round I will see what I can do.

So are all the thieves unconscious now, or is anybody left standing. Don't be so hurt that I beat up low level goons so easily its what they are there for. In my mind I like to picture them wearing butterfly suits.
