"Cid, my friend! You are a sight for sore eyes." Neroth smiles and toasts the bookie's name and to Cid's new found health as well. "I see a little rest has found you quite well." Glancing around the common room, Perception
Dice Roll:
1d20+9 (16)+9 Total = 25
Neroth checks for anyone who might be paying them any attention after such a grand entrance by Cid.

Neroth leans in close and whispers to Cid, "Confidentially, I wasn't going to trouble you with this, but my payment owing on the potion I got from Larsis was to track down someone who is a gambler at the arena. His bookie is purportedly this Greeves character. I'm obviously asking the wrong questions or the wrong people. What do you know of this guy?"

"I only know that he is served by two female guards that he calls his Furies, he dabbles in slavery, and he runs his business out of an old watch station in the Puddles, a district east of here." Cid says as if it were common knowledge. He slaps the bar for an ale before explaining further. "You asked a fellow that question yesterday at a bar down the road and I did a little homework." he says with a chuckle.

"Since you're doing all of this on account of me, it's only right that I give you a hand. Did Larsis tell you what he wanted with this gambler?" Cid looks at ease, giving a casual glance around as the two of you discuss business.

You do not notice anyone paying any undue attention to either of you and Cid seems pretty comfortable... and better at this type of thing than you are. The hustle and bustle of the hall also makes you wonder how anyone beyond two paces could hear anything that you're discussing.

DMMade a small correction there concerning who Cid is asking about. I've also been tied up with some stuff in the aftermath of our little hurricane experience. I should get back to posting regularly soon.

To DMI know the hurricane story well! We escaped this one, but I'm watching the next round for Katia. Hope all is well!

Neroth recounts his day asking questions after the bookie, "The gambler in question is someone named Xarcious. Larsis is looking to get some information from the man about the Sewer Dragons. He suggested I consider finding Greeves as a way to track down the scholar who is in his debt." Neroth looks deeply at Cid, wondering if anything of true emotion shows through his human disguise. "Any idea how to find the gambler?"

"Xarcious," Cid says thoughtfully as he turns his mug upon the bar top. "Seems Larsis gave you as good a lead as any with Greeves, but I wonder what he wants with the Sewer Dragons." Cid's human face twists in an exaggeration of deep thought. "They're anything but dragons... just a clan of kobolds making a power play by putting the squeeze to... smugglers wanting to use the sewers as a means of trafficking their goods." He says the last bit as it dawns on him.

"This is getting interesting!" he says with a wide grin.

"Would you like to accompany me on this visit to Puddles, or would you prefer to hang back? I think I will head there first thing tomorrow to have a chat with this Greeves person." Neroth looks around the common room, " Me thinks I'd best be getting some rest first."

To DMWhether or not Cid wants to come with, Neroth will head out to Puddles in the morning with the intent of seeing Greeves.

"Well, it's only fitting since you earned this debt on my behalf. I'll meet you back here in the morning?" Cid drawls after downing the last of his drink, which might have been too much. With a farewell belch, he rises from his seat and saunters off to find his entertainment elsewhere while you head off to get a good night's rest.

The next morning, you find that the streets in the Puddles are filled ankle-deep with muck, and you thank the lingering cold for keeping the mosquito population down. You can imagine that that the Puddles looks miserable even on the best days, even when the sewers supposedly did their jobs. Nowadays, it's revolting.

In spite of years of neglect and the condition of the ward, however, the old watch station Creeley Greeves adopted as his place of business has fared quite well. The grime-covered granite walls are still solid and the rusty bars on the windows are still thick enough to hold for years to come. An old, nearly illegible sign reads “Watch Station Four.”

The only door to the building is closed and there are no windows below fifteen feet overhead.

Neroth shrugs his shoulders, looking at the sound structure and closed door. "I'm sure we are neither expected nor welcome, but here's goes nothing." Neroth reaches out and pounds loudly on the door.

Then he simply waits.

Your boots sound muted on the waterlogged deck as you make your way to the large, thick oaken door and rap loudly upon it. When you hear no answer, Cid pushes upon the door and finds that it is unlocked, though it sticks a little and makes a loud scraping noise as it swings inward.

The inside of the old watch station is a mess with dark molds growing on the walls and vermin scuttling away from the door to take refuge in the corners. The inside is lit by a dim lantern and the smell of bitter coffee and cheap pipeweed is thick in the air, making the damp smell easier to contend with. The entry room is a narrow one, barely ten paces deep but five times that long. Directly ahead of you is a set of large wooden doors, secured from this side by a heavy metal bar. You can picture the Red Plumes once using this room to process those that they saw fit to imprison, though that would have to have been long, long ago.

When you step inside, you see three people at the far end, a broad-shouldered older fellow that has seen better days playing cards with two women that have... seen better days. The older man, whom you presume to be Creely Greeves, has a weathered look about him but could have been a fighter in his younger days. He still looks fit enough to throw down, however. His hair is cut close to his scalp and he seems to have a tick that causes his left eye to wink a lot, giving him a permanent stinkeye. When he looks up from his cards, you can't tell if he's smiling or sneering through the stubble on his chin. The two women look like they've seen their share of brawls, as well. In fact, they seem as if they've had one of late, with one sporting a split lip and the other a black eye. They turn their attention to you and Cid, as well, as you enter.

"What can we do for ya?" the rough-gentleman grumps through teeth that are surprisingly well-kept considering the rest of him. The woman with the black eye removes the pipe from between her teeth and levels a look at the both of you, her hand dropping near the crossbow hanging on the back of her chair...

DMMake a Diplomacy check if you like, modified by +2 for Cid's assistance.

Neroth nods toward the woman and the crossbow, making his hand plainly seen and unarmed, "Diplomacy

No foul intent, I assure you. We seek one of your 'regulars,' if I may call him that. And merely for information. We would not want to harm one of your good customers."

Neroth watches for a sign of interest, or threat, from the rough looking man.

There is no threatening gestures from the man, but he does get a good chuckle at the mention of "good" customers.

"Regulars?" he asks dubiously. While the two rough-and-rowdy women never take their eyes off of you, he leans over to take a good look at their cards. With a sigh, he throws his hand onto the table in disgust. "Information, like most things, comes with a price. Who are you asking about?"

Cid, apparently used to being threatened with crossbows, gives you a nod and lets you continue to do the talking.

"Xarcious is his name, apparently a scholar of some sort who likes his arena time." Neroth gauges the reaction to the name, then proceeds, "My employer has asked me to find him and get a bit of scholarly advice." He turns out his empty hands. "We intend him no harm. His gambling days will be uninterrupted."

Relaxing a bit and diplomacy

trying to convey a more relaxed attitude, "What price for this tidbit of intel, good sir?"

The man behind the desk squints through what appears to be his good eye before saying "Never heard of him," and waving a hand dismissively. One of the woman-thugs at the table chuckles, earning a sharp look from the other. "If you're interested in placing a wager at the arena, though..." he suggests instead as he begins gathering the cards from the table for a shuffle.

Cid steps forward, seeing this going nowhere. "Look, fella... Greeves, is it? We're just trying to find Xarcious so we can deliver something and ask him a few questions. We have the gold to make it worth your while. How about you cut a fellow scoundrel a break?"

Greeves takes a moment to chew on this before setting the cards down and leaning forward onto his elbows. Waving at the smoke lingering in the air, he says "I might know where Xarcious is, but he makes a lot of dumb bets. Owes me quite a pile of coin. If you settle up his debt, I might facilitate a meetin' betwixt yous all."

"How much?" Cid asks, pointedly.

"Two-hunnerd and fifty gold." Greeves replies.

To DMGood job saving me there. My diplomacy rolls sucked!

Neroth turns to Cid and says simply, "This is getting pricey." He turns back to the bookie, "One hundred gold now, and the rest when we talk to Xarcious." Neroth is thinking that there is something quite untrustworthy about this rough man and anticipates finding Xarcious dead and buried before having a chance to talk to him. Last try I guess, diplomacy +1
Dice Roll:
1d20+1 (12)+1 Total = 13
He gives the bookie a level stare that will either be convincing or laughable. Neroth doesn't know which way his approach will be taken.

Greeves, pleased with how well his negotiations went, laughs and throws his cards to the table. "You've got yourself a deal," he says, rising from his seat. "Settle up with the ladies here and I'll introduce you."

"You got a hair trigger or what?" Cid asks you with a humorless grin.

Stepping towards the back of the station to where a door sits in the wall next to a blackened stove, Greeves twists a key at his belt within the lock and shoves the door open.

"He's in there. Be gentle with him. He's the fragile sort," Greeves says with a chuckle. Cid takes a stick from his belt and unwraps it, a magical, heatless light pushing back the shadows of the room. Upon a desk shoved into the corner is a thin, emaciated, middle-aged man with wild gray hair. He does not rise when you enter, and as you draw near, you cringe at the scent of filth. Looking upon his face, you see that he has been severely beaten and is not conscious.

DMWanted to give you a shot before Cid stepped in!

Neroth counts out enough gold from his pouch and plunks it onto the card table, smiling forcedly to the ladies. He turns to Cid, "Anxious to get after this Xarcious guy, perhaps to my own detriment, but I have a feeling coming up with a bit more gold will be the least of my concerns. This whole situation is starting to smell funny." He pats Cid on the shoulder, and then follows Greeves.

"Lead on, kind sir," he says to Greeves, "Best not linger, if this degenerate owes coin to other gentlemen like yourself, who knows what trouble might find him before we do."
