Korath reaches once again for his axe and then moves into to finish the last giant rat. Unfortunately he trips on a bit of trash and his strike goes far wide. But the wound the rat gave him earlier had finally started to clot.

[Achenar]

The suicidal assault of the rats didn't lighten as they charged over and over again climbing the guarding elf's tree-legs only to glance off the thick bark-skin or be chased away by Danae's light shards. Tears of resin fell from the minor wounds they caused. The amber drops floated mid-air for a short time before they flew against Xin and covered some of the dragonborn's wounds easing the pain immediately. Achenar threshed the numbers of rats with his sword repeatedly but to little effect. He decided to change tactics. He waded through the swarming vermin not paying attention to the pain their sharp teeth and claws inflicted as they clung onto his body. His form blurred once again and a sluttish bear appeared where the bark-skinned elf stood a moment before. It shook the rats off it's fur then it turned to face the swarms. As it opened it's maw a buzzing, fluttering cloud erupted from it: a swarm of locusts not any less ferocious than that of the rats. The locusts bite into the rodents' skin and kept them distracted creating a stirring cacophony of chaos as they mixed with the swarming rats.

Danae steps out of the mouth of the tunnel just in time to see the Elf shift forms again, from his barkskinned humanoid shape into that a bear. It was a transition that one never quite got used to seeing... something slippery that the eyes just couldn't focus on, the mind couldn't quite grasp. She sees the larger rat threatening him, but the swarms seemed to be more evasive versus the others' blades. She pulls the waning wisps of light from Achenar and Gamorn , ones that she had been relieved to see hinder the vermins' teeth and claws, and proceeded to drive the last of the light into the three distinct remaining swarms. The Deva is quite amused to note that the rats are having a very hard time telling wisps of light from locusts, and wind up failing to dodge either.

Xin smiled as he watched what used to be an elf stomp around the battlefield, and with Danae's assistance two of the swarms fell apart. Xin laughed and shook his head, amazed.

"Both a bear and a tree. Wonders will never cease."

Seeing a straight line between the last rat and himself, Xin extended his staff, the acid spiraling up its length before bursting from the gnarled wood point. The acid flew straight into the neck of the beast, eating away a portion of fur and burning its flesh.

The top layer of garbage was now littlered with hundreds of smouldering and crushed corpses of rats. The remaining rats continued to move and attack as one, but the last collection of the vicious creatures was considerably smaller than it had once been. The last giant rat was surrounded by the adventurers, and if it were able would probably have fled. As it happened, there was no escape route, and so it continued to join it's smaller brethren in trying to bring down one of the larger creatures. The attacks were all aimed at the bear that now rampaged around the cavern, and although many of them hit true, it seemed now too late to salvage victory.

Korath lets out yet another grunt and swings his axe high and then down hard. This time he strikes the surrounded animal true beheading it in one stroke.

Somehow, Captain Damakos managed to make it through the entire battle unscathed. Unsure why the rats didn't try to attack him, he decided it was time to take his lumps with the rest of the crew. Moving to surround the last remnant of the rat swarm, he brought his sword to bear, purposely taunting the rats to attack him.

As the rats swarmed towards him, he felt a sickening lurch in his stomach simply because of how close they were. Pushing the feeling aside, he allowed his heritage to take over and blasted the rats with fire.

Gramorn approaches the few rats remaining of the once-large swarm and extinguishes all of them with a mighty axe blow. Simple as that.

After catching his breath, Gramorn decided to search the area, beginning with the pit trap. I believe you mentioned something about a false floor here... he said towards Achenar. He crouched down to lower his center of mass and therefore also lower his chance of losing his balance and falling in, then hit the "false" ground with his axe. (He used considerably less force than he would in a combat situation, but still enough to disturb anything unstable.)

Looking around at the corpses of rats that littered the floor, Captain Damakos again made his rounds and walked amongst the crew helping to bolster and inspire, as well as bandage those that needed more than words.

Keeping Gramorn's body in between himself and the stone the Dragonborn just struck, Captain Damakos peered over and looked at what the Paladin had done to the floor.

[Achenar]

The bear was rampaging amidst the swarm scattering the crushed, broken, burnt bodies of rats as well as those still alive. It didn't seem to notice his own blood trickling from multiple wounds. It only howled when the mighty jaws of the remaining dire rat locked around one of his rear legs. But help came early as Korath ended the filthy creature with a single powerful swing of his axe. The captain and Gramorn eradicated the remaining rats soon after.
The image of the bear shook before it transformed back into the familiar form of the green haired elf it truly was. Achenar's mouth opened as if he wanted to say something, then he fell on his knees. The severed head of the dire rat still pinched at his ankle even in it's death. The elf grabbed his dagger and forced the dire animal's jaw open freeing his leg. The wound looked bad but there was no time for tending to it now. He quickly wrapped a stripe of cloth around it and before long he was ready to go. As he saw the dragonborn paladin moving to break the trap floor, he backed further away. He wasn't ready for yet another clash so soon. Instead he settled for meditation. Translucent leafs grew out of air around him to cover and heal his wounds.

Xin relaxed, watching the last of the rats fell dead.

"Close one, mates" he said, brushing rat fur from his clothing, "Let's beware of holes in the ground in the future."

He turned smiling to Damakos and the meditating elf.

"I've never been a humble one or prone to gratitude, but thank you both nonetheless, I'd be rat food if not for your efforts."

He bowed his head to them and began searching the room for exits.

The rats cleared, the recently chaotic room is now quite still. A palpable feeling of relief falls over the cavern and it's current inhabitants. Suddenly but briefly this is interupted by the loud crash that follows the paladin's axe blow against the floor. A large section caves in, revealing what seems to be a recently dug pit trap, about ten feet deep. There is little of interest in it, only the collection of junk that fell through with the false floor.

As the Captain wanders through the group, assisting them with any trauma the battle may have left, Xin scouts the cavern for exits. Only two are obvious: the hole the party entered through and the passage to the south west.

As Xin begins to wander about the room touching things, Korath puts a hand on his shoulder.

"You stay close. Don't wander off. "

With that the barbarian hefted his axe and attached sunrod and headed cautiously down the tunnel.

Having established that the pit trap was indeed nothing but a pit trap, Gramorn began searching the rest of the room for anything that could be valuable. If asked what he was looking for, he'd respond: Anything useful. We know for sure that Kobolds live somewhere in this cave, and we also think there's a dragon. It's fairly common knowledge that dragons hoard treasure, and Kobolds are at least intelligent enough to gather and use items that could also be of use to us. There's also the issue of the dwarven guide's sons. Stormhammer, I believe he called himself. If rats can attack us like they did, there's a chance their bodies are here too. As soon as you're done resting, help me search the place.

[Achenar]
After he ended his meditation, Achenar stood up and walked around the cavern trying to learn what purpose this area could have served and how all the garbage and the mad vermin got here. However his awareness was distracted by all the countless anguished rat corpses littering the ground. Though all his scars disappeared during his meditation a mild dizziness came over him. He touched his forehead, something wasn't right. "Must be the stench..." - he thought. No matter how much he longed for fresh open air he knew they had to continue. He stood near the opening of the passage leading out of the cave to wait until the rest were ready to go.
