09: Return from Below
There were three paths ahead of them: retreat through the sewers with Dianne and the other victims; backtrack to the earlier crossroads and take the southern branch; or push on through the door that stood before Adèle. Last edited by hvg3akaek; 02-16-2012 at 06:26 PM. |

Goffrix Kundarak felt refreshed after the short rest. He was thinking about many things at once. The discussion that just unfolded between several members of the freed group of prisoners, the sad message the one-legged kobold gave Adèle, and the fact that Lady Valna's qualities had made him feel better, somehow.
__________________Pogo Q'barra, as the one-legged creature was called, had joined Dianne and the villagers to go upstairs. The kobold had said he needed some time to rest, to shed his purple tentacle, and he had mumbled something about "ancient medicines" to find a cure, and look for someone named "Udodak" who still held one of the Stormcrows' tainted weapons. Somehow, Goffrix had felt sympathy for the little kobold. It had seemed like he had been through a lot. When the kobold had left, the dwarf remarked to no one in particular, "Good that he goes to find a cure for the aberration at his hip... that looked very unhealthy! I wonder where he got that! I could feel an otherworldly taint being present there... like hundreds of tiny red devilish eyes looking right through you! Brrrr....! I wonder if Xoriat had anything to do with that... some strange things come from that strange place. I wonder what those dark creepers have to do with that as well... Hmmm.... now... this door to the north was where they took Blake Lefevre?" Expressing Goffrix's thoughts, the tiny red-and-yellow drake on the dwarf's shoulder pointed towards the door. Sweeping about, bringing his present thoughts to the room and forgetting about heroics (for the moment), Dinngka moved to the door. "I will take point. There's little I can't shrug off, so unless you have scrying abilities of which I cannot see, I shall serve as a form of 'scout'."

Marcus had been surprised at the viciousness in the little girl's voice. Whilst the other talked about exactly what they would do when they found their kidnappers, he looked into Adèle's eyes. Instead of fear or anger, his face showed sadness. "Adèle, my dear - how long have you known me for? Do you not think that if I knew anything helpful, I would tell you willingly - nay, even eagerly?" With one hand on her shoulder, he knelt down so that her eyes were at the same height as hers, and continued. "No, child - they did not make me privy to their plans or operations. They took your father from the cells where they stored us, and out of the door - nothing further could any of us see. All we know is they took him - like they have taken many others - and he has not returned. None of the have returned." The only comfort he could offer before Dianne and the others left was a gentle pat on her shoulder, and a whisper of "Good luck, dear", before he followed the others back to the surface.
__________________As Dianne scouted ahead in the darkness, Valna spoke briefly with Goffrix. "Look after these ones...and our new friends. I will help guide the others out, and light their way, then double back here as fast as I can. I will not be gone too long!" With the villagers now leaving, the others had time to think on their plans ahead. Adèle and Dinngka each moved to the front, ready to leap through the door, whilst the others milled around behind them. Last edited by hvg3akaek; 02-20-2012 at 12:37 AM. |

While Marcus comforted Adèle, who had just gotten some very bad news, and while the group of villagers (and Pogo) led by Dianne and Valna were guided to safety, Dinngka was about to kick in the door to the north of the room. Goffrix took a step back and conjured his light at the floor at Dinngka's feet, so it would flow into the room beyond once the kobold would show what strength he had in his feet...

Stopping for a moment, Dinngka decided to try the handle. With his hand poised, he glanced to Adele. "Are you prepared, Beast Slayer?"

Aeleena took notice of the Kobold's apparent challenge at the young woman. "Oooo. I see you have rivalry brewing. The best of luck as I shall watch the contest in the sidelines." Much is true, the Eladrin dislikes brutal confrontation but prefers subtle methods through cunning, wit, and yes, shadows!

Pausing yet further before opening the door, the kobold turned to the fey, a look of confusion on his face. "Rivalry? I merely wished to know if she was prepared for the unknown that exists on the far side of this door. I see that she is a primary combatant who will be next to me in the flurry of destruction, and I wish her to be ready when I reveal our challenge." He shrugged, wondering why this eladrin was attempting to sow contention, but ignored it in favor of steadying himself for anything.
And then he opened the door. |

"All right. If you say so," said Aeleena. The kobold's body language earlier seem to suggest differently or is the Eladrin over analyzing everyone's conversation?

"Do you really think those gnomes are sitting there behind that door, waiting for us? With all that went on in here, I bet they'd have heard, and either come in to imprison us again, or they got the hell outta here! No, I think we're up for a search rather than a bash the door and discover them sitting there drinking ale or whatever it is they enjoy, all surprised at our escape... Still, I actually am curious which one here is the best swordsman... or swordswoman... heh, heh." Goffrix voiced his opinion, stroking the chin of his imp. Then he opened his tome, to read something that came to mind.

Aeleena grinned at the dwarf's comment. "Well said, Mister Goffrix." Such a surprise to find like minded individuals in this rag-tag party coming to a same "conclusion". In fact, competition does bring out the best of abilities. "I'm certainly more curious who gets to claim the big bad's head," she added.

Phil was more then happy to let someone else lead the way into the next room.

Dinngka raises a curious browridge. "I thought you to be wise, Effendi Dwarf. 'Tis better to be wary and look foolish than unprepared and dead. I approach every door such as this as though my enemies are arrayed behind it."
With that, he threw it open, khopesh ready for anything. Last edited by sammichweasel; 02-18-2012 at 08:35 PM. |

Cassie chuckled when Goffix mentioned swords. "And what about the poor little halfling, no weapon in hand, just her fists?" She knew the dwarf suspected what she really was, so she made her way over to him, whispering lightly so he could hear. "I see you have suspicions about me. Perhaps one day I'll tell you what you seek to know, but for now, be happy we can take down these mongrels that imprisoned us."
