Reading more in-depth about Cayden Cailean, I've changed my mind - it would make sense that Hemlen would be a follower of the Accidental God, and finding a boy listing in the waters would be a clear sign to him, a "gift" from Cayden.

Also, it's reassuring to see in the description that not all Caileanites are drunks - a paladin of Cayden would enjoy the odd drink, but not to excess. Also, Cayden's personality (taking the Test of the Starstone on a drunken dare) matches Nemat's outlook almost perfectly.

Changing Nemat's last name to Cailean. I think this is a good clarification.

*nods*

It's actually an important point to many of Cayden's worshipers - if you hold alcohol as a sacred value, then abusing it equates to blasphemy. Another take is - if your assumption is that ale-worship amounts to illness/incompetence, then your perception and experience of ale must be particularly sad. Similarly, it's just ignorant to assume that an entire faith is falling-down drunk...far too many logistical flaws.

Kenneth's redhead is a character called "Captain Beatrice", created by Anna Ignatieva (aka Anry). This is another picture of her.

I'm also among the horde of interested prospective players, though I'm debating whether I have time....

I'm thinking of a cleric of Hanspur, for whom the River Freedoms are sacred tenets, here to educate the Southern freebooters in the true nature of waterborne liberty and opportunism. Favoured domains would probably be Travel and Water. The campaign trait would most likely be Barrroom Talespinner, to represent someone who's more enthusiastic than experienced when it comes to knowledge of piracy.

But common sense and the temptation to sign up are presently warring with each other.

Ok, so this is my current character application that will be paired with Creapers once they get their application down. It's almost complete but lacks a true background. For now, my previous application's background can be a stand-in until I've rewritten said background to fit Ulfgar better/coincide with Creapers. Portrait to come.

@Outcast - Thanks for spotting the artist! Concerning your character, I would wonder at someone who upheld such Freedoms and then seriously proposed to 'convert' other folk. A bragging bard perhaps would be more likely, and still within the concept?

@Feimon - Don't worry as much about getting the background in - so long as you know the important bits, then you know your motives. It's less vital for me to know. Level one characters don't have too much backstory, anyroad. As to channeling, you'll note that Charisma only comes into play when it's used offensively - which I think fits with that aspect of charisma which translates more as 'force of personality.' I like that perhaps a deity grants him spells, but it's his own character which would have to supply the force, and Wisdom seems basically passive. (Mechanically, it spreads the cleric a bit thinner to keep him from being too SAD, I suppose.) On that note however, there are some interesting Channel Variants which I would probably accept. Also, you may choose to reword spontaneous casting to apply to domain spells instead of healing - though this is almost purely flavorful, and in fact somewhat weaker than spontaneous healing. Still, it's an interesting option, I've always thought.

Character Application

Jacqueline "Jackie" DeLacey

Name: Jacqueline DeLacey
Race: Half-Elf (Water Child Racial Trait)
Class: Gunslinger (Musket Master Archetype)
Alignment: Chaotic/Neutral (Traveler)
Background: Where Jackie goes, Jackie finds trouble. At least, that's how it feels to her. Perhaps it is merely her tendency to step on toes wherever she goes, or perhaps it is a run of bad luck. As the bastard child of a noble family, Jacqueline DeLacey has serious issues with both authority and heritage, something she is struggling to come to terms with. The DeLacey line had always been well-known for its purity in both blood and business practice as a merchant trading company, making Jackie's mother and her dalliance with a vagabond elf something of an embarrassment to the family. Unsure what to do yet not cold enough of heart to leave a newborn to the streets, they formally adopted the girl, claiming her the daughter of a family friend who had passed on. Though her family permitted her to use the family name, Jackie's surrogate father considered her a mistake, resolving to 'remove' her elven nature with discipline and rigor. He resented her for what she was, a half-elven impurity and a symbol of his wife's infidelity, and thus reminded her at every opportunity of her inability to inherit nor hold a position of responsibility. Growing more resentful of her father and the cruel words of her adoptive siblings (never knowing they were truly tied by blood), Jackie found her respite in the harbour. Often sneaking out of her lessons in her young adulthood, the half-elf took delight in both swimming and watching the magnificent ships pull into port, wishing for her own chance to be aboard a mighty ship.

Both difficult to control and yearning for stimulation for her buzzing mind, with her parents' grudging permission, Jackie apprenticed herself to a shipwright & weaponsmith. The shipwright, an elderly human named Cole, was both taken aback and pleasantly surprised at how quickly Jackie took to the trade, and did his best to teach her all he knew. Things were growing tense at home, her fathers' attempts at forcing her into a path befitting the family name, and arguments between the family members were growing more frequent by passing day. But Jackie had fallen in love with something new and exciting, something that demanded her attention whenever she was not swimming or working on a ship's hull; gunpowder. It was something that frightened her at first but intrigued her all the same, and she knew this weapon would be the way of the future, working with Cole to forge and refine firearms for sale and practice, the young woman finding herself drawn to the musket in particular. She ended up forging one for herself, a battered and clumsy effort, but one she remained proud of as she trained with it whenever she could.

One night, Jackie returned to the family estate to find her mother drinking heavily, the woman attempting to prepare herself to deliver the half-elf some news of her lineage. After revealing her true bloodline, Jackie was furious, both at the deception and her family's decision to cut her from a chance at inheriting. Full of spite and resentment, this lead to a heated debate with her father on the same night, bitter and hateful words exchanged that could never be taken back. The man, having endured years of trying to raise this unwanted mutt into something respectable, flew into a rage and struck at Jackie with a glass, a grievous wound from lip to ear. The girl fled in pain and anger, seeking to escape both her 'family' and their lies, and signed on with the first ship she could find.

For a few years, she served as a shipwright and lookout aboard "The Aspirant", a ship that strayed somewhere between privateer and pirate, the girl finding solace in having the seas nearby at all times and making herself useful to people who needed her. There, she made the first friend she'd had in a long time, a plain speaking man named Lash. He seemed able to see past her scar and exterior defenses, and the two formed something of a bond with each other. She found this friendship both strange and relieving, eager to have someone to rely on aboard the vessel, and the two spent much of their free time talking, especially in comparing their respective weapons of choice; bow against musket. The ship found itself running afoul of both rivals, enemies and occasionally the law, thus Jackie and Lash became no strangers to combat, fighting alongside each other eagerly. After a few years of high sail, a particularly gruesome skirmish nearly scuttled The Aspirant wholesale and sent it to the deep, the few survivors of the crew piloting the ship to the nearest safe harbour, Port Peril. The vessel was nothing but scrap wood now, and with the Captain dead, the crew disbanded. As they'd both survived, and eager to have some company, Jackie remained with Lash as they set about about finding work on another ship, eager to escape the dangers of Port Peril. Some strangely friendly individuals ended up pointing them towards the Formidably Maid, a course of action she has come to regret.

Tropes: Jerkass Woobie - courtesy of godofallbears!

Jackie is an expert swimmer thanks to the elven side of her heritage, as well as holding skills in being a shipwright, an engineer, and working with siege weapons & gunpowder. She rankles at authority and being given orders against her will, but given the dangerous nature of the ship and crew, she does her best to keep her temper at bay. She is likely able to serve as a lookout, and is quite capable at performing any underwater repairs necessary to keep the ship in one piece, if it comes to that. A fine shot with her musket, she's not keen on getting up close and personal with her enemies. Jackie has few social skills to speak of, trying to distance herself from her captors and fellows as much as possible while merely flying under the radar, finding Lash as her only reliable companion. If tasked with a job, she will do it to the best of her ability, and try to keep any comments to herself for fear of retribution. She is not rebellious enough to consider mutiny, her desire to live is enough to leave that idea dead in the water, but she will take what little shows of independence she can afford.

Trait Post:
Touched By The Sea

Every night, she dreamed of the ocean. She had never truly known why, but her elven side always called out to her from the waves, beckoning her to revel in it. Her daily lessons bored her, finding only reprieve in learning of the design of ships, their weapons and sails, their masts and rigging, and what little she could learn of the art of an engineer. Her life was not uncomfortable, merely one of boredom and safety, trapped within the confines of her adoptive family's estate. The occasional day trip to the habour, whether with the nanny or accompanying her gruff adoptive father as he inspected cargo, was the only thing that dulled the itch for excitement that dwelled within her. The massive masts and sails of ships gliding effortlessly through the waters brought wonder and longing to her heart, and the smell of salt and the sounds of crashing waves haunted her, finding herself at her happiest when she could simply submerge herself in the inky blue. Drifting down, she was always excited to see what new things lay below the waves, a glimmer of fish or even something as simple as a discarded bottle or coin. These moments were few and far between, as her family deemed it necessary to keep her from what her heart yearned for, but as she grew older so did her boldness. Sneaking out for the evening, or 'forgetting' to attend her lessons to see the ships and swim beside them became a common point of argument between her and her surrogate parents. She couldn't understand their desire to keep her from something she truly loved, and they feigned ignorance at her obsession, calling it a passing fancy she would soon grow out of. The dreams of the sea were always so vivid, where she could swim as long as she liked without growing tired and she never seemed to grow short of breath. Yet she always felt a presence, a guiding hand that showed her the ways of the water, the currents and eddies. The presence was always out of sight, just in the corner of her eyes, and though she never saw his face she knew he was always smiling.

Thoughtful Ramble: Jackie is a bitter young woman, angered at her family's lies and hypocrisy, which is part of the reason she has a low charisma score. The other part is a nasty scar she bears across the left side of her face, a grievous cut caused by her adoptive father in a fit of rage after he discovered she knew of her true lineage, a scandal he had wished to cover since the day she was brought to his home as an infant. The scar, starting at the corner of her lip and traveling in a jagged pattern to just under her ear, is distracting to most who attempt to hold conversation with her. Additionally, her lack of social skills combined with her burning rage at the injustices of the world tends to leave most of her relationships strained, the girl preferring to keep to herself unless a job needs doing. Most find her abrasive and cold, however underneath she is simply an angry young woman in need of direction. Despite this, Jackie is a perceptive, intelligent girl with both agility and deft fingers, allowing her to work on a ship, a ballista or a firearm with relative ease.

Massive Damage: I'm all for scars & disfigurements! I'd prefer it if it didn't go too overboard, but it's far more interesting overall.
Editing: I've honestly never had a DM edit my posts before, but as long as the change was purely aesthetic with regards to grammar/spelling/punctuation, I suppose I wouldn't have any concerns.

BasicsName: He awoke to swaying and knew, without opening his eyes, he was on water. His head was pounding causing him to reach his hand to his head to rub a spot above his right eye. He opens this eye, followed by the other, allowing the inside of a ship to make its acquaintance. He stays this way for many heartbeats until a voice jumps out of the silence.
I don’t know what manner of creature you are but we are to be mates. I am Gregory and who do you be.
He turns towards the sound of the voice to see a human, male, skinny, hairy, especially on the face, with a missing tooth, no, three missing teeth. He opens his mouth to speak I…I.. but is interrupted by the sourness of his throat and the rumblings of his belly and before he could continue he lets out a burp Jallluuuute.
The human nods his head Well Jalute, I got this to tell you, you be a pirate now.

Race: The stories you heard of Grippli have them as being small, slender, long limbs, yellow eyes, and skin of bright colors. There is a lot of truth to them. Jalute has bright yellow eyes, with specks of purple, skin mainly brown but with strips and spots the color of the sea. However, Jalute is tall for a Grippli, a few finger lengths above three feet and thick in body, limbs and digits, causing him to weigh in just over forty pounds. Individuals would describe him as more toad-like then frog.

Class: Grippli monks’ techniques are embraced from nature. One rare fighting style draws some of its forms from a flower that can only be found in nutrient starved marshes. This flowers petal comes in multiples of three that cover up nine sharp looking stamens. As insects fly by the flower targets it and shoots out one of its stamens. Insects’ pierced by the stamen fall down and are soon grabbed by one of the flowers many shoots. The shoots pull in the prey providing the nutrients the flower needs.
Archetype = Zen Archer

Alignment: Lawful Individual - Jalute lives by his own code, keeps mainly to the corners and shadows and maintains a simple lifestyle. By this you would think that he would want to be in a more structured environment. No, Jalute prefers to be in locations where there is disarray. Quite often Jalute can be heard clicking In chaos there is room for singularity. Even though Jalute is a bit loner, at the core of his spirit, he needs to be in the presences of other intelligent creatures. So when it comes to companions he is not picky.
Better be with an elf then by oneself.

Tropes/Traits/RamblesTropes: Dirty old man towards adult Non-Grippli females. Jalute favors fighting from afar and up high. If the opponent is either elf or orc he will be seen to move closer, throw out his net and take the fight to the individual. If asked why, he will croak in reply they irritate me.
When is height, having a bump of a nose, and flaps of skin for ears required to be a member of a ‘civilized’ society? F@&% the elves.
Strength is not the only component of being able to fight well; might is not always right. F@&% the Orcs.

Trait: Touched by the Sea.
Jalute is fascinated by water. Water flows down the easiest path. If it can’t find an easy path, it batters the obstacle over and over until the path becomes easy. Jalute sees a duality in water. Water that is paramount for survival and water that seductively leads to death; Fresh and Salt; Ying and Yang. Jalute instincts put his survival first, his race comes a very close second, but against this instinct he is drawn to the sea.
Above all else Jalute just likes the feel of water.
Waters good for the skin; keeps it moist.
He’d swim better with web-feet. Maybe I should craft some. These sailor types would buy them up. Bah, what would I do with the coin.

Thoughtful Ramble:
Grippli are social creatures and they have an internal need to be part of a group. Jalute knows right and wrong, likes to laugh and very optimistic about life. What gets Jalute into trouble, makes him unappealing to others, are his customs and traditions. Charisma is not his strong suit.

In the Grippli society they don’t have names instead they use physical descriptions of the individual. This works since each Grippli are very different in appearance from one another; color of skin, strips, spots, bumps and etc. This is not true for other races, when Jalute should be using a name he uses a combination of physical and personality descriptions which may not be flattering.

Jalute is confused by how other humanoids deal with sex. Sex is not with one partner but multiple. When release is needed it is done the same as if you have to relieve yourself of other bodily functions.
I saw you take a piss over there. What’s wrong with me doing this over here?
Folks who have spent any time with him have learned to go the other direction when they turn a corner and recognize the back belonging to Jalute.

Flaws: None at the moment
Massive Damage: Works for me.
Editing: If you can beat me to my multiple edits per post; Have at it.

It's a seafaring campaign. I should have warned you that seafaring campaigns are somewhat popular given the rarity of a DM willing to run one. That and pirates. Pirates made this go from extraordinary to epic.

Applicationleft-aligned imageName: Lash
Race: Half-Elf
Class: Ranger - Freebooter|Skirmisher Archetype

Tropes
Lash is a sailor but he isn't one for running around shirtless with a patch on his eye and a parrot on his Though he does sport a large hoop earringshoulder. His Uncle was Captain of The Aspirant, a Privateer/Pirate Ship, and you learn a couple things when you're fighting pirates one day and merchants the next. It takes a cutlass a lot longer to open you up if you wear armor and stay away from the I have no need of swashes, buckled or otherwisebucklers of swash, an arrow kills a man before he can kill you, and always do what the Captain says. Unless doing what the captain says will get you killed... Then you pretend to do what the Captain says and take your beating later. Lash isn't cowardly by any means but he doesn't believe in dying for no other reason than someone else wanting his Uncle's boat.

The gray eyes he got from his half-elf mother and his natural talent with a bow made Lash an easy choice for the Crow's Nest and The Aspirant's elite group of archers, which was fine with him. Lounging in the Crow's Nest or drinking with the other archers saved him from most of the dirtier chores and earned him a bit of respect from his crewmates.

Trait - Buccaneers Blood
Lash's father is a fisherman but he's horrible at it and, as a result, Lash grew up poor. When he turned fourteen he was sent to work on his Uncle Vane's ship, The Aspirant. Growing up with Read -- Sometimes sailors; Sometime Piratessailors gave him a bit of a rough tongue but more than enough common sense to make up for it. Once he was old enough to be let out of the galley he was immediately put to work in the Crow's Nest and taken in by the archers. Life after that became a blur of government contracts, pillaging merchant ships, and rum. Ten years after his induction to the crew his uncle took on a woman named Jackie. The general consensus was that she be left at port but his uncle insisted, saying that firearms like the musket she carried were the future. Most of the archers immediately dismissed the woman, refusing to talk to her, but Lash was curious. After a bit of discussion and a few days at sea, he had grown fond of the callous, water-loving woman. An immediate rivalry sprung up between the two, as Lash was the best archer on the ship and Jackie was no slouch with her musket. The two often took turns at the Crow's Nest, even sharing shifts when more eyes were needed.

Soon after Jackie joined the crew, one of his Uncle's Privateer rivals attacked The Aspirant, severely crippling the ship and killing Lash's Uncle Vane. The remaining crew of The Aspirant was able to pull into Port Peril but the ship was too damaged to repair without money the crew didn't have. Lash, having no desire to go home and try his hand at fishing, ended up with Jackie at the Formidably Maid. He was hoping that the battered woman would need a bit of comfort and had enough coin to get him drunk but he only made it through one pint before everything went black.

Thoughtful Ramble
Lash is taking Dual-Archetypes in an attempt to make the flavor of the character fit the class. I'm not sure how I'm going to make Animal Empathy and Track work on a boat but I've been thinking about it for a bit. Depending on how shy sea-critters are gonna be, I could keep myself from getting eaten by a shark. Maybe I could grab a passing bird while in the Crow's Nest.. Shrug. I'm still working on Track. How do you track something in water? Ripple patterns? But if you're close enough to see the ripples, you'd be close enough to see whatever your tracking. Unless it's the shark that tried to eat me a bit ago and why would I go after the shark? The rest of the class features are either replaced by freebooter/skirmisher, or seem a lot easier to fit in. I'm also still trying to come to terms with him being bald, not that his baldness has to do with anything important but I keep thinking about giving him a hat.

Flaws
Mechanically - None.
