Ah! I've spawned a legend!.....and it would certainly be an interesting character dynamic, but I can't. I wouldn't be able to take him seriously. Maybe if this entire game was a parody, but its not. Unfortunately, Phylashio will just have to live on in our memories. and your signature. I'm both honored and ashamed every time it appears now! It's already going to be hard enough to take seriously "The gnome that was once Phylashio".... I can't believe I completely failed to realize what I was naming him. So ridiculous. It was a pure accident, I couldn't have come up with something that good if I tried!

.....I don't suppose I'm ever gonna live this down, right?

I'm sure your gnome's name will be forgotten eventually Ross. Hehe

On another note.... personal monologues about ones backstory may end up being longer than if I just wrote out the backstory rofl. Oh well I'm 1,000 words in already and I'm not going to stop now.

Okay, got the map fixed up. This rough version also neglects the Great Fungrest, covering the entire southern portion of the western continent a few leagues south of Owesh. It's a deadly place of towering mushrooms, cold and wet and full of strange creatures.

Nobody goes there. The Fungrest is one of the Great Barriers, just like the Giant's Wall, the Eternal Storm, the Glass Desert, the Sea of Perils (aptly named), and the Far Tendlerun. ... And something Northwest of Lyrna. Don't remember what's that way, but it's dangerous! These Great Barriers have all impeded exploration beyond the Known World, which is why we only know of this portion of the southern hemisphere.

Well... it's why you only know of this portion of the southern hemisphere.

You know what, if you had left him Phylashio and worked it out in your background as something that made the character grow, I may have brought forth my legions of fellow gamers to convince DD that your character was just too good to pass up. Now, you have to sway him with your writing chops.

Honestly, I think it would have been a fine character. We could have arrived on the boat together and met each other during the journey. Unlike most, Dorian wouldn't have thought much about the name, being the showman and circus performer he once was. Really it was a mistake that spawned a golden opportunity for a unique character twist, but I respect your decision to not go through with it.

Even though you say that you couldn't have taken the character seriously, think about the fact that to overcome such a thing would have been a great trait for the character. You could have easily had your character make it abundantly clear his name was Phil, which while it seemed odd for a gnome, also created this sense of mystery to him as to why he hides his name. I mean really with these three items:
  • The name Phylashio Silkenmurmur
  • Gnome
  • One time performer dealing with combat reenactments
you could make background gold with this. I may take that name and use it myself given the potential created with all that we have discussed. Phil could be the most serious gnome you ever meet, and the most serious character, but it's those minor little details that truly make a character real and unique.

Do as you wish, but as someone that's played with DD before and knows what he does, I hate to see you miss an opportunity like this to show the kind of creative skills you have. DD is big on being creative, but I respect your decision and won't make any more jokes. I will keep the signature though since I have nothing better at the moment.

I'll think on it. Right now it feels like too much of a gimmick to me, and I feel confident enough in my writing abilities to make the character come alive in other ways. But my application is still a rough draft, and I'm not married to any of it until the time comes to potentially set it in stone. I do appreciate your take on it, it's definitely thought provoking. Who knows who he'll end up being by the time deadline rolls around. But enough derailing the thread with my silly gnome, let's get back to casting an exciting game!

I am making progress on my application but will wait to post it until it is completed. I have read through the magic systems and I am extremly intigued. So many questions but they can wait until player selection is over...

Today I have discovered that drawing up a town map in Photoshop is much more difficult than a world map in Photoshop. @.@ Maybe... maybe I'll order a new scanner...

Wanted to put this out there. Character Wealth dictates that we would have 900gp of personal items at level 2. The Signature Item should be something simple like DD described, or if it is a weapon or armor, it should be no better than Masterwork. Even with limiting to masterwork, it is possible to get an item well over the 900 that we are supposed to be allotted. Masterwork Full Plate will come out to 1650. My bow is going to run somewhere between 700 and 900. I'm just saying, given the level and typical wealth of our characters, there should be a limitation to that signature item that people are aware of.

Class:Class:Stealthy duel blade wielding swordsman with an affinity to shadow...

Appearance:Not an attractive man by any standards, this tall slender human stands proudly, the studs on his leather armor shinning from a recent polishing. Matching hilts adorn a dirk and main gauche dangling freely along a black leather belt.

He keeps his head shaven right down to the scalp, an increasingly popular trend amongst the younger males of Vexbright. Thick black rings linger under his eyes and his face is slightly gaunt hinting at some affliction or over exhaustion.

Aaras' attire looks to have been of the finest quality when he started wearing it, but time has not been kind to the gray silk shirt, jet black breeches and knee high leather boots the male wears. Dirt and overuse has worn the clothing thin.

Personality: Aaras is very secretive and untrusting of new contacts even bordering on paranoid. Though once his trust is gained he would stop at nothing to ensure a stable relationship and will go out of his way to assist friends in need of his assistance.

Behind the rough and tumble exterior Aaras presents he is a kind man who takes pride in doing what he views as right. His often serious manner can put others off but he doesn't particularly care about other people's opinions of himself.

Just FYI, given the information on 4 dwarven names, I added a couple sentences to the background.

Summary: Fabrilia (latin for blacksmith) is his clan name, but Epicurus stripped that from him when he was banished. Lucian has yet to earn his fourth name and wants to do it by succeeding in his quest.

Hm. It hadn't even occurred to me that it would be an option to have masterwork weapons. Although it fits my item's description to a tee...
Cost of a masterwork shortsword is 310 GP. DD, would it be a problem for my signature item to be masterwork?

Yeah, my bow sort of dictates that it is masterwork since it is a "one of a kind" weapon. There are probably others out there in a lands that are similar to it, but this was made by a single man, it was the only one he ever made, and it took him years to craft.

Masterwork, while it does add a small benefit and a bit of cost, still isn't that big of a deal when you consider the cost of magical enchantments. DD's description seemed to hint that you could have a magical weapon or armor, thus masterwork already, and have it "activate" the magic within later on for free. I think that is a bit much since we would already gain wealth during our adventures to get to that level that SHOULD be used to pay for such enhancements.

The minor magical items he described, given how they have very little if any advantageous value, are perfectly fine. Anything that is similar to that would be fine as well. I'm just worried about people that are going to create things like "Frostbite", a +1 Frost Longsword, and then not have to pay for the enhancements once they gain a level or 2.
