Everyone is woken out of their troubled slumber by a loud roar. You recognize that it's still dark. The effects of the poison have mostly worn off but you haven't gotten much sleep, either. The fire has died down to nothing more than gray smoldering coals. In the dim light of the night sky, you believe that you see your other three party members waking as unexpectedly as you are. You then hear another loud roar coming from the direction of the 30 foot cliff and you realize that the gorilla has "spoken" for the first time since you've met.

The gorilla seems to be pacing back and forth aggressively and looking into what might be a very small crevice in the short cliff about 20 feet to the left of the concealed cave entrance.

Greetings

A moderatly pitched male voice is heard shouting between the roaring of the beast "HEY! GET THIS THING AWAY FROM ME! Come on... nice gorilla... nice gorilla... calm down, I'm a friend... nice gorilla... calm down..."

Well, it certainly didn't take long for Thrann to swing into action. Letting out a harsh, quick bellow, the minotaur jumped to his feet- or hooves, rather- and took up his mighty axe. Moving with determination, Thrann stomped slowly over to the crevice and hefted his axe onto his shoulder.

Carefully, his night-keen eyes scanned inside the crevice that the gorilla was pacing around. At the moment, he wasn't sure if the agitated beast would attack him as well... but frankly, he was neither worried nor afraid of this. Thrann merely snorted loudly and pointed his greataxe into the dark crack in the cliff, ready to strike down whatever was inside if necessary.

He gave another loud, quick bellow. The message was clear: Come out or face death.

The gorilla backs down when Thrann approaches the crevice. It makes no more noise and appears to be watching intently to see what will happen next.

Nym's eyes flash open as he immediately snaps out of his trance, his body springing up into an immediate defensive position. Spotting no immediate danger, he doesn't nock an arrow, but instinctively keeps his bow in hand. With the gorilla less hostile, he heads over towards Thrann and the voice. Seeing the minotaur at the entrance, Nym realizes there's no way anybody could force their way out. He calls to the man, "I suggest moving very slowly and coming out of there. If you're a friend, then keep your weapon sheathed as you come out. If you're not...well, use your imagination."

Stepping out of the fissure is a male human standing about 5'8", selnder with brown hair and eyes, but otherwise fairly indistinguishable. He's wearing leather armor, but appears to be armed with a short bow and a long coil of chain hanging from a hook on his belt. He is holding his hands out in front of him, tentatively.

"Woah there big fella... I was just coming over to the fire to get warm. An old man with piercing blue eyes sent me this way, and said I'd meet 'like-minded individuals'... Don't know that we have that much in common but I'm hoping we're like minded enough that you calm down a bit. I have no idea how I got here and so I followed the old man's lead. I approached the camp and this ape started chasing me around."

The man steps out full from the chasm, hands still held in front of him peacefully.

"All that I know is I woke up with a major headache this morning with a wierd white rock in a pouch and an old man smiling at me. He told me to come here... and then this ape went berserk."

"The name is Astrith, by the way..."

Nym smiles as he yawns, realizing that this man's in the same boat as them, and that he shouldnt be any threat to them. "Yeah, the crazy old man sent us here to get that fungus. Probably the worst stuff I ever drank, but now that I think about it, I'm feeling a lot better." Nym walks back towards the fire as he talks, setting his bow down near his bedroll. "Well, it's not much of a fire anymore, but I've got no problem with you staying with us. Oh, and if you haven't drank any of the boiled fungus, I think we might have a bit left." He lays down onto his bedroll. "We haven't gotten much rest though, so I'm gonna get some shut eye."

"Thanks... Boiled Fungus. Sure I was hoping! And thank you... your pet gorilla didn't seem so friendly but its good to be welcome. So you know the old man? What else do you know? How did you get here? Maybe questions can wait until morning... its been a long night." Astrith heads toward the fire to add some wood and warm up.

Nym reopens one eye. "We can answer questions in the morning. Maybe you haven't been hit too hard with the paralysis, but we're still recovering. We only had a few hours of rest when you came across that gorilla that's been following us ever since that carriage ride... But we'll explain tomorrow. Good night." Nym promptly closes his eye, making it apparent that the newcomer won't be getting anything more out of him.

Thrann sat up for a long time after drinking his fill of the fungus infusion, his greataxe at the ready. Perhaps he was watching over the newcomer... perhaps he was simply standing watch over his sleeping companions. Tilting his head back slowly, the massive minotaur looked up at the stars in the sky upon this cloudless, moonless night, his thoughts troubled.

He could not remember why he was here. For the first time in a very long time, his solitary conviction was not with him. Thrann had awoken to danger, surrounded by strangers, and without purpose. The old man had said this was due to the poison... but still it laid heavily upon his thoughts.

For a long time, ever since he had set out upon the unknowable road ahead, his words and actions had possessed fervor, and a strength that made it clear to all that he would not be bested. It was not with him this night... where had it gone? He had not felt like this since... that day...

The minotaur Thrann suddenly snorted and looked back down toward the dying embers of the campfire. No, he thought to himself. I have chosen my path, and I walk it even now. Though I know not where it leads, I know only that I cannot... will not... turn back.

It was with great difficulty that Thrann found sleep... and when it came, it brought no peace to his troubled mind.

Astrith thanks the group for hospitality, drinks some of the fungus drink and sets up for some sleep near the fire.

The rest of the night passes without incident. Of course, a tarrasque could charge through the area and you'd sleep right through it.

Everyone wakes up to the sound of crackling wood. You smell smoke in the air and, as you rise from your bedding, you see that Thrann has built a small pyre and is burning what appears to be a small body.

Astrith wakes and prepares for the day, seeming to avoid the Pyre and the minotaur. He checks his gear, washes as best he can and eats a small breakfast.

Once people start to rouse themselves he makes a point to introduce himself to those he did not speak to before. "I don't know how you've been proceeding but I've played the role of scout before in bands like this and, as we travel, I'm happy to scout ahead a bit and report back. I've got a knack for picking out small details and hidden dangers."

Danys opens an eye cautiously...no carraige charging off the edge of a cliff with him aboard..so far so good. Actually waking up feeling OK rather than dying of poison...even better.

He stretches, yawns, and gets out of his bedroll, looking around to see if any tarrasques charged through last night.

The he notices Thrann's activities. He goes over to the pyre, and bows his head, watching the small body being consumed by the flames. He whispers under his breath
May your ancestors guide you little friend, to your resting place in the hunting lands beyond

After a few minutes, he goes over to the newcomer, and holds out his hand

Greetings new inmate, welcome to the asylum-without-walls. I am Danys, the elf is called Nym, and the other guy Sierr. The strong silent type is called Thrann.

He doesn't speak much.

Thanks for the offer on the scouting, but before we head off, I would suggest we have somewhere to head off too, and since I am not being ridden of a cliff, chased by horsemen, dying of poison or spelunking, I think we shoud sit down and workout what these do

Danys sits down, and empties the contents of the odd puch he woke up with the day before.

I still reckon this white thing is some kinda puzzle...
