”Hm.” Gragham furrowed his brow as he leaned in to have a closer look at the markings, feeling both disappointment but a growing curiosity as well… ”Bear prints, aye? So it be wardin’ off bears, or calls bears, or turns ye into eh bear… or sumtin’. Nebber ‘eard o’ nay item dat be part magic b’fore… Mus’ be sumtin’ special, aye?” He slipped the bow back in dem bag, leaving the rod and shield on the counter for a moment. ”So… ye nay know anneh sage dat be able ter know dis kinda ting, do ye? Also, do ye recognise dem crest o’ dis shield? I believe it ter be stolem from eh bloke ‘ere in Asylum: dem rightful owner be wantin’ it back, me reckons.”

The heavy pouch hanging against his bare chest reminded the dwarf that there also were some more practical matters to see to. ”Ah, o’ course: we nay only came ‘ere fer information, but ter buy sum o’ yer potions as well… Healin’ potions, invisibility… and… err… Well, sumtin ter keep meself from drownin’.” Gragham smiled apologetically. ”We be sailin’ ehlong ‘Ells River soon, ye see.”

Cain shrugs in reference to the shield. Don't know. I would figure your guys up in the Anvil would know more about that stuff then I would. All the smiths in town our known to those guys. Certainly not my specialty. He then smiles coyly at the mention of potions. Now there is my specialy. He then leans in as if to whisper, despite no one else being in listening distance. Although I would appreciate it if you would keep that quiet. I don't mind you knowing since you are a good friend of Rahns, but I don't go around advertising my "specialty goods". Most in Asylum couldn't care less, but no need to attract the attention of those who don't, if you know what I mean.

He then makes a list in his head. Healing potions, invisibility, water breathing. Anything else? How much of each?

Assume standard prices in DMG

Gragham’s eyes went wide when he heard how much the potion of waterbreathing would cost him. Sure, I have a few hundred gold to spend, but that much on a single potion!? He lowered his voice, abiding the storekeeper’s wishes: ”Well, dat water breathin’ potion be too much fer me pouch ter ‘andle, but I be takin’ ehn invisibility potion an’ eight…” It occurred to Gragham that Carlyle would probably want some as well; ”…Ten minor healin’ potions.” He pulled out his pouch and started counting out the gold.

ooc1 invisibility (300) + 10 cure light wounds (50) makes 800 gp, right? 1 invisibility + 4 CLW for Gunder and Fhurman, 4 CLW for G, 2 CLW for Carlyle.

At Caine's smile of confidence and chiding words towards Rahn, the Beguiler smiled broadly in return.

"My brother, my thinking may perhaps be inept, for I am not yet worthy to fully comprehend your truely awsome abilities in regards to magic. Yet, I have promised my best effort to my friend Gragham. In that regard, I shall perform to my best ability...even if I may slight your ego mildly."

The Almar then winked subtly to his friend Caine...so that he would know that nothing personal was slighted in this exchange.

"But you are correct once again, for my spell reveals no new knowledge."

When Gragham brilliantly pieced together the potential correlation between the apparent golden bear prints and the possible uses of the magic of the rod, Rahn could only gush.

"Gragham...that is brilliant thinking! I had not even considered that, and it remains as the best possible explanation I have heard yet. Nice work my good dwarf!"

Feeling quite satisfied that his new companion was very capable of thinking with agility, the Almar continued.

"You must have deep connections to magic in its purest form...for that form often appears to be outside of common magic itself. I am impressed."

When the dwarf continued into his request for potions, Rahn nodded his head in agreement, but quickly added afterwards,

"Gragham Ironbeard, your choice of sundries is exceptional...exquisite in fact! However, I should inform you that I am capable of providing our group with invisibility inherently and a limited supply of light wound healing via a wand. But, you are wise to choose a potion...or potions...of these items, for there may be a time when I am not able to prudently apply my skills in a timely manner. Thus, it is best that you and the others of our group have a potion in case of an emergency. However, I humbly ask you to only use these potions when I am not able to perform these services for our band. We need to cherish our resources, and while these potions you buy are needed as potions by our group, they should only be used when absolutely necessary. I hope I make myself clear without coming across as condescending...for you have not yet become fully acquainted with the full range of services I can provide."

Rahn paused momentarily as he looked Gragham in the eye as a friend.

"My good dwarf, since I have committed myself and the Kray Consortium to this cause, I must soon impart to you the full scope of the abilities I offer. This is not yet the time, but before we depart upon the Hells, I promise to give you a full run down of what I can provide. That is the efficient and productive path."

Again the Almar paused to catch his breath...for his speech had been quite elongated.

"Do I speak wisely my friend? Can I trust you to keep my information a matter of group confidence?"

OOC:Gragham...in short, I will soon (this week) post a link that will provide you with a description of the Beguiler Class (my host web page is not working right now) and, furthermore, you can now peruse my PC sheet as linked to my User Name. We are all good role-players here, so I know that this info will not be abused...just as I will not abuse my knowledge of your PC sheet connected to your User Name. Also, my in-game posts over the next few days will explain "in game" why Gragham would have access to this knowledge. Does this sound plausible? BSR gave me his blessings on this method as well.

The dwarf wasn’t used to this abundant amount of praise... His kind was straightforward, to the point, but this”Well… yennow… bear prints, bears, it nay take eh genius ter make dat link, me tinks…” He couldn’t help feeling a bit flattered though: after all, it’s always nice to hear a compliment… or two… or five… I should either be flattered or suspicious… and it’s against my nature to be flattered. Then again, I don’t want to be suspicious. Gragham decided to term his current state of mind “self-conscious”. He also decided that he still had a lot to learn about the world outside Katzenberg.

When Rahn switched to the subject of the potions and magic however, he looked up at the Almaren and grinned. ”Odder “services” den invisibility an’ healin’, aye? Tink I undehstand what ye be talkin’ bout… Dun’t ye worry, yer secret be safe wid me. It be wise indeed ter stay cautious wid dis kind o’ infehmation ‘bout yerself; dat I can relate to.” He placed a finger on one of the stacks of gold and platinum pieces: ”Dem invisibility potion be fer friends o’ mine, by der way, as well as eh good deal o’ dem healin’ potions… always handy when yer in eh tight spot. As ye said though, it be prudent in dis dangerous world ter cherish us resources…” He gazed somewhat forlorn at the amount of gold glistening on the counter: ”…An’ dis be eh good portion o’ me resources…”

oocThanks for the info I think I've already gotten a decent idea of Rahn's general behaviour description as well, combined with the description of the Beguiler class... The dwarf will have a bit more difficulty figuring things out though, LOL...

Cain's eyes go wide at Graghams request. Ten! You'll just near wipe me out of my stores. Hopefully I have that many. Let me go check. Cain heads off to the back room as Rahn and Gragham speak. As they finish, Cain reappears with a small carrying case and a wide smile. You are in luck master dwarf. I have everything you need. He eyes the gold on the counter and nods satisfactorily handing over the carrying case of vials with what Gragham had requested. Your offer is accepted. That one that is slightly red in color is the invisibility potion. The others are the healing.

He scoops up the gold and places it in a strong box under the counter and then turns his attention back to his customers. Now you mentioned something about sage right? Well, a good place to find them might be Scrivner's Hall. I'd check there first. Although I don't know if you want to be waving this thing about over there. You probably only want to show them the markings.

Rahn observed the gold that Gragham placed upon Caine's table. It was not an insignificant amount.

Yes...I have the backing of the Kray Consortium, but I really need to acquire the kind of personal funds that this dwarf seems to have at his disposal! Time...only time will tell. My plan is coming closer to fruition, but I must not display my need or desire in any way, for these dwarves are not as easy to understand or influence as I had hoped. Time will only tell.

With that, Rahn unconsciously fingered the quartz stone upon his breast. Its white gold setting was specially crafted so that its finely wrought strands would highlight the natural blue depth of the gem set within...such a contrast of details, while mild to the uninitiated eye, could make or break many a back room deal among the noble elite. A true courtier was always aware of the details of the sight, sound, smell, touch and perhaps even taste of any situation he or she found themselves in. Rahn was no exception to the rule.

In response, Rahn swept back the richly hued green over-shirt he wore to reveal a deep red under shirt that appeared to be made of some of the finest material of the known lands. His delicate manicured fingers deftly reached into an apparent "nothingness". With the dexterous maneuver of a cat of the wild, the Almar quickly raised his closed hand to his forehead, as his bright amber hair flowed out over the closed fist. The sky blue shade of his skin provided a backdrop to a living portrait of cultured beauty for a brief moment before Rahn lowered his hand to the table.

"Gragham, since I am now a part of your company, I offer you ten platinum pieces to help support your cause."

Rahn then opened his hand and artfully deposited the ten platinum pieces onto Caine's table.

"Pick up your change and please consider this an investment into our future together my good dwarf. Your allies, battles and goals are now my allies, battles and goals."

Smiling in a manner of empathy, Rahn continued his spiel.

"Now, please do not discount your intelligence and wisdom in the understanding of the rod. While you claim "it nay take eh genius ter make dat link", you must understand that spell slingers and book readers such as myself often overlook the subtly obvious in favor of more esoteric explanations. Thus, you my friend are in fact a potential genius of seeing the simple fact. That is a quality that I much need at my side as I search for the obscure secrets that are not as often the solution. Does that make sense my friend?"

At about this time, Caine returned with the goods and made an excellent suggestion to only provide the runes to a sage rather than the rod itself.

"Pardon me my friends, for that is such an excellent idea that I must address it immediately."

With the same deftness that Rahn had acquired the platinum pieces, he then acquired a pen and parchment from what appeared to be thin air. With the concentration of a scholar, Rahn carefully copied the bear print runes onto the blank piece of parchment.

"Ah...I now have a copy for our translators to interpret...thus we can keep our secret under wraps so to speak."

The Almar seemed pleased enough with the progress he and Gragham had made thus far.

Cain watched as Rahn began to copy the runes. You may want to try a rubbing since the symbols are inlaid. Sometimes a small detail can make a difference and you don't want the message to be misinterprutted. He fumbles around under the table until he produces a small piece of what looks like coal but not as shinny. Here lets try this. He then takes Rahn's paper and wraps it around the rod. He then proceeds to rub the coal like substance over the paper where it overlaid the symbols. Sure enough, the symbols copies over to the paper almost perfectly.

oocNice general description, thanks!

Gragham eyed the ten platinum pieces for a moment. I think I’ve lost any understanding of what’s happening here when I entered the door. He shrugged, swiped the platinum off the counter and grinned at the almar. ”Fer ehn ‘undred more I be ‘appy ter ‘elp ye brush up on dat accent.”

Cain’s large smile told the dwarf that they had conducted a satisfactory business deal just now… The prospect of more successful business deals in the future made the current investment quite worthwhile. He accepted the wooden case with a smile, took four of the vials out, placed them in his belt pouch and placed the case on the floor. After taking a blanket out of his backpack, he wrapped the case and its precious contents in the blanket for extra protection and slid the package into his pack. ”Tank ye Cain, dat be eh promising start o’ eh long an’ fruitful r’lationship, me tinks… Waddaya tink, p’haps dere be chance o’ eh discount next time we be visiting ye fer ehn order like dis?”

Gragham now watched as Rahn started copying the print, taking a special interest as Cain produced the curious leaf of paper that seemed perfect to copy it with. ”Int’restin’… Nebber saw dat b’fore... So now we be able ter show dem print without showin’ dem rod itself, aye? Be dem sages nay trustworthy in yer opinion?”

At Gragham's response to the platinum investment, Rahn laughed aloud.

"Gragham, I like you more and more as our work progresses! In fact, I may have to take you up on your offer in the near future."

Then, once the work on the rod was completed, Rahn held up the parchment to view it closely. He was impressed with the results, yet once again he was upstaged by his friend Caine.

That wonderful bastard...what would I do without him.

But he took it with grace and attempted to gain from the free education. Such should be the manner for one wishing to improve his methods.

"Your resourcefulness, my brother, never ceases to amaze me. Do you have any of that for sale? It would come in handy if I ever need to copy something similar in the future."

Trustworthy? Cain says with a shrug in response to Gragham's question. Who knows. I figure, why take the chance when you don't have to. Those academic types to like to chat however, even if it they don't have any malicous intent behind it.

He then smiles at Rahn and tosses the fellow alamar the gritty rock. Its something like coal. You can have it. I've got plenty. Consider it a throw in for our transaction here. He then looks back and forth between Gragham and Rahn. Anything else?

ooc:I am moving it along. Let me know if there is anything either of you wanted to do before leaving.

After completing their business the two say their goodbyes and head back towards the Anvil and Scrivner's Hall. The roads are still cramped with the hustle and bustle of the early afternoon traffic. As such it takes them some time to reach the large building.

They enter the first floor to find a large room lined with floor to ceiling shelves filled with all sorts of books, scrolls and stacks of ancient looking parchments. In the center of the room are large tables where theree are several people, their heads buried in books or scratching furiously on paper. A set of stair cases near the rear right corner of the room leads both up and down. To the right of the entryway there is also a raised desk overlooking the entire floor. A young man sits at the official looking desk but doesn't even bother looking up from his book as they enter.

Rahn shook the hand of Caine and spoke a soft word into his ear before he and Gragham left shop of the Almar.

"I shall see you soon my friend...and thank you for your services."

Once upon the street, Rahn then turned to Gragham and spoke.

"You did well my friend. Caine is not an easy man to make, yet you acquired a good deal and held your own quite solidly."

The streets of Asylum were still quite robust, yet the Beguiler found his path confidently. Upon the journey, Rahn remained silent, yet attempted to speak volumes with the subtle air of personality he exuded in his wake. While he tried not to be arrogant or distant in his walking demeanor, he sought to be special none the less. His intended aura was something that beckoned to be observed, yet at the same time attempted to remain hidden from actual observation. Perhaps it was the natural Almaren manner...or perhaps something only Rahn sought. Regardless, Rahn was not impeded in his travel.

Once he and Gragham entered Scrivner's Hall, the Beguiler quickly scanned the environment, yet his head barely seemed to move. There was an odd sense of awareness about the Almar...as if he could sense his surroundings without actually looking at them. This must have been a parlor trick of some sort, for no one could actually accomplish such a thing. In fact, Rahn may not have actually accomplished this, for it may have all been a creation of his own mind and over confidence. Regardless, he continued the potential charade as if it were absolute truth.

Noting the official looking desk bearing the unobservant jockey, Rahn cleared his throat in a manner outwardly polite enough, yet requesting attention and respect.

Looking directly at the attendant, the Almar spoke softly.

"My good sir, we have traveled a good distance in search of the resident expert in esoteric scripts and symbols. Our task is of the utmost importance to this community, and we would very much appreciate an audience with the local scholar on such matters. Your guidance would be much appreciated. Can you help us?"

Rahn continued to focus his attention upon the seated young man...hoping that he was the appropriate person to address...and smiled cordially as he awaited a reply.

OOC:Diplomacy check:

Dice * Roll:
(as this is an older post, these rolls are interpreted by the older (more basic) dice roller code)
d20+14: (12) + 14 Total = 26

Bluff check:

Dice * Roll:
(as this is an older post, these rolls are interpreted by the older (more basic) dice roller code)
d20+12: (16) + 12 Total = 28

OOC: The diplomacy and bluffs check are for the entire sequence of Rahn's attempt at exuding a "confident yet personable air"...both during his walk through the streets and conversation with the young man at the desk. If you would prefer seperate rolls, let me know and I will roll again and do the same in future situations.
