Magus Wiley fingers his Ring of Wizardry, finding a moment of calm to analyze his internal reserves. He isn't happy about what he finds. He shouts, No fireballs left today. But I can block some of our path. I'm going to lay down some spheres of flame, which will give us a minute or two to run away. Bob jogs the way the horses went, heading for the exit. They can get through, but it'll hurt them to do it. Plus, they've already got some meat to chow on, so they may be distracted. Upon getting to the narrows, he doesn't bother with the usual showy spell components, channels his pure will and intent upon the universe, and a small ball of flame appears to the north, at the edge of the entanglement spell, further narrowing the pathway. You all better hurry, let's get out of here! Anyone got any caltrops to add to the mix?

OOC: I've been really busy so I rushed the conclusion of this a turn or two.

The party with the remaining horses make the escape from the strange cave. Magus Wiley covers the rear with a heated ball of flame. The creatures dont advance and seem to fear the heat of the fire. As you exit the cave the air is cold, like a calm day before a hard snow and the wind blows from the northwest. Before you are rolling hills and vast mountain side behind you, the clouds high and white. As you make your way a good distance from the cave, the ground begins to level off enough to maybe ride the horses now. Zelian pulls out a black rock that has a bright light on the inside. "This is different. The light is growing more bright and is pointing in the north direction. Whatever it means we must be getting close to it. I think we should head north, but it seems we have a problem, we are short the horse power, only four horses. I think we need to unload the pack horse, and perhaps double up on the horses, but that will exhaust them fast carring extra loads. Any suggestions?"

Elrohir exits the cave at a sprint, turning every few seconds to see if any insects follow that need to learn a lesson in 'sharp pointy projectiles 101'.

"So if that is our compass then we should follow it.", the elf responds to Zelian. "On this rocky terrain it may do just as good to jog as ride along, so if anyone needs the lift, Zoe here can carry you and I will gladly scout ahead on foot as quickly as I can. Zelian, if you care to, I can take the compass stone to the front to help guide my trail, that is unless you care to tag along... quietly."

Elrohir make sure to scan the terrain thoroughly, looking for any signs of a trail that may help ease the journey.

Magus Wiley keeps up with the group in their quick exit from the caverns. He pulls a roll of bandages from his bag, and ties a strip of the cloth tightly around the wound in his arm. The bleeding quickly stops. Bob stops for a moment a few feet away, his elven ears listening intently for any sign of pursuit. Satisfied that they have managed to escape with their lives, he stays with the main body of the party in their egress. He is a little too soft and squishy to be scouting ahead.

[Ix]

Still watching the cave even as the group gets farther and farther away, Ix eventually lowers his guard, allowing himself to examine the blade for any damage it might have taken in it's several encounters with the floor during the last fight.

He pulled a rag out of his sack, likely the poor bloke's shirt who had this bag before him, and began wiping off the dirt and ichor from the blade. And there it was, a nick in the blade, about the size of a fingernail where it must have struck stone while flying out of his hand uselessly. He was about to reach into his bag, when he realized that he didn't have a whetstone to sharpen it.

"Does, uh, anyone have a whetstone? I dented my axe on a rock back in the cave, and I want to get it out while it's still fresh and before we get jumped by any more nasty things." A breif pause, he continued to ask "Does this happen to you often, by the way? I haven't been attacked so many times in a row before in my life."

"... but it seems we have a problem, we are short the horse power ... " Zelian says, a short distance ahead of him, "Any suggestions?"

"If we don't know how far we are going, we shouldn't risk tiring the horses too much. Load them up with anything that's slowing us down, and make our way at a steady march to the north."

Connor puts a little extra distance from the mouth of the cave before he turns around. Only when he's certain that the bugs won't venture out does he address the others. "I've been using the same mount that I was given back when we started all of this. But I have the ability to call my own steed that Tyr has provided for me. I haven't yet because there was never the need to. As for now, I agree with Elrohir that we walk for a while until we get a better feel for the terrain. Also, if that device is glowing brighter, we may be closer than we think to our goal".

Elendra looks around at the others, and back up at the diminishing cave entrance, before speaking up. "I have never ridden much, but I agree that we should probably wait." Reaching into her pack, she tosses her whetstone to Ix, to touch up the edge on his ax.

Looking over at Zelian, she asks, "Getting closer, but to what?"

Magus Wiley looks at Zelian, curiously looking at the rock that seems to have some sort of location device. If I may ask, Zelian, what is that magical contraption that you are using? What is it locating, and by what means? Looking around at the landscape, he mentions also that he can provide a secure shelter come nightfall.

Zelian eyes Magus Riley and the others as if it was a question he wanted to avoid "I think this compass as Elrohir called it points towards whatever the creator wanted it to. A type of scrying magic has been cast into this black heart shaped rock and it glows and moves in the direction of what it is attuned to" Zelian turns quickly satisfied with his answer. "We should probally get moving in this direction" heading north / north east "The cormyrian crown seemed to make high importance that we move with haste. I almost feel we are behind schedule, but we do have this compass to guide us!"

"Well then, it seems we should be moving along then," Elendra says, glancing curiously at the "compass" again. "We are indeed short on horses, but we can make better time if we take turns riding and walking," she continues. "Given that these are your horses, I will walk first for a few hours. Should we switch off every 4 hours?" she asks, as she begins walking in the direction Zelian and Elrohir had pointed.

"It is going to be the same pace whether on horse or not. I can go on foot all day if I have to. Let us make haste, I feel time is falling short. A foreboding darkness covers the land." With that, Elrohir glances at the scrying compass once more to assure his heading and begins to jog in that direction, finding the best path possible.

[Ix]

Ix nods at the suggestion that at very least they should discuss more as they walked. Meanwhile, he begins to straighten his blade as he walks, something he seems to have a fair amount of practice doing.

Magus Riley is used to hard walking, not having much trained skill in horses. He always claims that the gods gave him feet to walk on, and that's good enough for him. Truthfully, he just doesn't like the animals. Much too skittish unless properly trained. And the saddles hurt his rear end.
By the end of the day's journey, the sorcerer is leaning heavily on his staff, a look of strain on his face. He by no means calls the halt, a look of iron-hard determination on his face showing his commitment to the march. But he also looks forward to summoning a nice reinforced cottage for the night's rest.

With most of the rest walking, Connor decides not to call his steed for the time being. He falls in step behind the rest. Having little skill at being a scout, the paladin takes up the position of rear guard.

As you make your progress using Elrohir's masterful skills, you avoid most of the bad terrain and perhaps a few encounters with what appeared to be signs of giants and tracks of orcs and goblins. You begin to make your way out of the hills of the mountains, looking back at the path you had just taken, your have lost sight of the cave that brought you here. (pic1 hour 1)

After a few adjustments in direction the landscape turns into a wide open steppe, for as long as you can see the land is flat with very few characteristics. to your south are the mountains. (pic2 hour 2)

pic2 note Disregard the snow caps on the mountains, they do not have snow on them.

You begin to realize you have not found any real goal as of yet traveling until the sun begins to fade. You all stop to catch your breaths and take a moment to talk as frustrations set in and willpowers collide. Everything to the north is flat and boring, keeping a north/ northeast direction is only capable due to Zelian's 'Compass'. Looking again the light continues to grow brighter INSIDE the compass. (pic3 hour3)
