Actual conversations with players in the last two weeks:
__________________Daragor: "Well, this is Dove and Kael's mission. I don't want to put myself forward and, you know, Ec's really good at finding hot water. . . . " DM: "You're the scout. Feel free to, like, scout. It's not just their mission, you're all there, and hey, you finding hot water ain't MY problem." Daragor: "Okay, if you're sure. . . ." Pyth, on the phone just now: "I looked at the game, but if Ec'eer's taking the lead, and Kael and Dove are 'just the hired muscle,' it's probably inappropriate for Kael to make a suggestion." Welcome to the wonderful world of my players not wanting to step on each others' toes. Told Pyth Daragor's comment about hot water. Pyth: "Kael has no problems so far with hot water." DM: "Yeah, he does seem like a bacteria that likes to hang out around magma flows in sea vents." Daragor: Ec'eer will try to bluff his way past and if it doesn't work he'll belkar whoever's close, so long as no one has a problem with that let's rock and roll. So. . . please, take yourselves off your respective leashes. Kael could very well speak up as the priest's 'military attache" or 'bodyguard" and make it convincing. (Given his intimidate skills, what low-level flunky would question him, seriously?) |

The map in-game has been slightly edited to make the squares reflect a 5' grid. This should help out enormously.

You didn't have to go through all that trouble. I am sure we could have delt with it like before. It is strange though that they made a map on a 10' grid. It must have been printed in Canada or something.

So Raven. Lookie, lookie at what I found today. A new maping program that will hopefully make things simple again. Its a little funky to use at first but basically you just type on a grid, press export and copy and past it here using [ code ] tags to make it look like this:

Ohhh! Grid coordinates, even. I shudder to think how long I used to spend on AutoRealm maps, where I'd put in the coords by hand. Gah.

I see three votes so far of "Yeah, I think we're likely to wind up in combat. Matter of fact, I think it'd be a good idea if we were the ones who started things off" but I have yet to see anyone roll initiative or do more than look with vague menace at the trogs.
__________________Milo has indicated a desire to cast black tentacles at the southern end. Should I just assume, sans initiative, that you're just gonna get the ball rolling? *wicked grin* I try very hard not to move for the players, but y'all are bringing out the evil in this particular evil, bully DM.

If an assassin studies his victim for 3 rounds and then makes a sneak attack with a melee weapon that successfully deals damage, the sneak attack has the additional effect of possibly either paralyzing or killing the target (assassin’s choice). While studying the victim, the assassin can undertake other actions so long as his attention stays focused on the target and the target does not detect the assassin or recognize the assassin as an enemy. If the victim of such an attack fails a Fortitude save (DC 10 + the assassin’s class level + the assassin’s Int modifier) against the kill effect, she dies. If the saving throw fails against the paralysis effect, the victim is rendered helpless and unable to act for 1d6 rounds plus 1 round per level of the assassin. If the victim’s saving throw succeeds, the attack is just a normal sneak attack. Once the assassin has completed the 3 rounds of study, he must make the death attack within the next 3 rounds.
__________________Sounds like you'd have to be hiding/invisible in a combat situation like the current one to use a death attack, yeah? Rules lawyers, interpret, please. |
