I was more of a caulk and float man myself though. |

I'll be the first to admit my knowledge of the dnd rules is lacking, but logically (to me) since the horse/donkey is doing the swimming for us, wouldn't we merely need balance checks to stay on the animal as it kicks its way across the river?

So yeah. It looks like the horses filled up with women and kids first, thus Kahz is going to try and swim it. He has no Str bonus and no ranks in swim, so somebody better be prepared to come back and get his drowning dwarf butt. I think this would be a great time to point out that the sane thing to do would be to ferry everyone across via horse, but we just had to have some John Wayne types to jump in and ruin any chance of that logic. I'd also like to point out that the leading cause of dead amongst cowboys in the old west, past disease, gunshots, indians, etc, was drowning, trying to cross water on horseback. Not only can horses not swim in fast currents, they have almost no chance of regaining their footing if they lose it in fast running water.
EDIT: While writing this, I decided that it's stupid to try and swim across. Kahz is gonna do the smart thing and ask for a ride, even if it means making someone come back to get him. Seeing how he's almost man sized and weight, he probably won't be able to catch this train, but it willing to wait for the next one. Last edited by Obsidian Halo; 07-21-2009 at 12:17 PM. |

Kahz could always ride a donkey/mule, and the rope is for him as well >_>

Mina just barely manages to hold on, but since she does and Cobbwick is holding on to her, is she able to aid him? I rolled a 13 for aid just in case. That +2 would be all he needed to stay on the horse.
__________________Also lofac did mention the river is shallow, so it's possible the horses can make it some of the way without having to swim. The deepest parts will be the channels in the middle. I was under the impression we had enough donkeys/mules for everyone who can't make the swim to use one? Last edited by Ducky; 07-21-2009 at 01:37 PM. |

I'll be honest, I read all the posts twice and still wasn't 100% on what's happening with everyone. I just know there's a river and some people with horses. Sounds like the sensible way to go. I'm not sure what the rope deal is, but tying myself to something that isn't buoyant doesn't sound safe. I'm also not sure how many mules/horses there are, but I figured asking for a ride was the best bet, especially since my riding ability is about like my swimming ability...nonexistent.

It is kind of confusing. The rope was more for people to grab onto rather than tie themselves to. I only had Rudran do it since, despite being a dwarf, he really probably is the best swimmer our of all of us. Except maybe Thavin.
I hate to say it, but I'm kind of hoping for a little DM magic to sort it all out and make the appropriate decision on who floats and who sinks and how. |

Ironic you should ask about the chicken Kaz, bc I can smell it right now as it is cooking my oven. I had to go back to Fayetteville this weekend (hence my absence sorry, didn't expect that much posting over the weekend) because my brother went to Razorback senior's day camp. Now I get spend my housewife days putting together a highlight film for him to send in to various places and see what becomes of it.... Anyway, Cobbwick is not doing so hot the rolls. First I can't jump over a crappy little log to save his life, then he walks into a temple and can't see anything, and now he can't hold onto Mina/a horse... I will stick to spells that don't require a roll, bc Cobbwick is nicht gut at rolling.
Correct if I'm wrong, but with everyone else confused I want to make sure I've got it right in my head. Thavin-swimming with a homemade flotation device Rudan- Will also be swimming Mina & Cobbwick (what a pair!)- riding on a horse across the water Kahz-will also be riding something across the water Siono-??? EDIT/Update: Kaz, cooked the chicken and I have to say just looking at in the pan made me want to work out nonstop for a week, aside from that it is delicious even though I had to make a change. Instead of basil pesto (couldn't get my hands on it and was too lazy to make it) I used Prego tomato, garlic, and onion pasta sauce.... I can see where the basil pesto would be a hundred times better, but it still turned out great! Now I need to go do sit ups or something Last edited by Majblitz; 07-21-2009 at 08:31 PM. |

Actually, that's not a riding DC, it's a 'holding on' DC. I certainly wouldn't want to try and make an untrained check to control a stubborn mule crossing a raging river. I know this is fantasy and all, but Kahz really romanticizes the idea of a hero more than actually being one. I think there's a disconnect between what he hopes he'll do and what his rational brain will let him try, which obviously leads to some personal disappointment. I'm hoping he'll grow into his roll as a savior of the lands, but for now he's a bit too prudent.
