Yeah, nunchukus were used in Japan as a farming tool originally, and used to beat the husks off of rice, just like ChaosAccountant said. They were not meant to be a weapon, but the Emperor decided that no one but his soldiers could carry weapons, so the people began to train with their farming tools as a form of self defense. I think it was actually Okinawa specifically where the use of them as a weapon began, but that may have just been Hollywood bs that has worked it's way into my memory.

__________________I'm actually going to be quite occupied this weekend and won't be around too much, so I'm going to defer this win to chaosaccountant, who came closest first with "flail" (I agree with chaos that tebo is a kind of flail).

A weaponised flail is a chain with a lump (or more than one lump) of metal on the end, and much further removed from the origional agricultural impliment than a nunchucku/tebo. They work on the same principle, but a katana isn't the same as a bastard sword.
