Well, with most of my games going a bit slow right now, I've decided to take my first stab at creating my own custom campaign world. I've almost always been a player, not a DM, and when I have been I've just run modules. I figure the first step in running a campaign I come up with on my own is coming up with the world it is in.
__________________I'm using THIS as a guide to create my geography. I'll be making some of the same decisions and some different, but I'm going to try to follow the basic steps. I'm differing from this plan in 2 main ways. The first is that I'm not making my story than basing my history around it, but basing my history off of the land. I'm going to come up with the geography and the regions and see how my history naturally develops from it. The other thing I'm doing is actually starting with tectonic plates and forming my mountains and oceans around them. If anyone has any ideas they think would be cool that they've never had the ability to fit into their world, any advice for where to start with creating my own other than what's in that guide, or any other commentary, feel free to voice it. I welcome all the help, advice, and eventually criticism I can get. Last edited by Macbeth; 03-09-2010 at 04:09 PM. |

Once I get the world laid out (I plan on at least 2 continents separated by large bodies of water) I'm going to do just that. I'll look at where civilizations could build up and where they could eventually clash and figure out where wars were and nations were and are. I'll have currents wars going on in some places and peace in others to give plenty of options for different adventures. I plan on the world being pretty huge, so some far off wars, possibly even nations, won't have even been heard of in other parts of the world.

Well, I got the basic world map all drawn out and I'm pretty happy with it. I actually started with a Pangaea like super-continent and drew a few random lines across it to make new continent boundaries and made them drift apart from each other. I'm going to get a copy of campaign cartographer and map it out nest. I'm not sure if I want to do the whole world or just the continent where I think I'm going to start my first campaign, which is about the size of greenland.

hmm, I managed to cram everything into my world at some point or another. Things you guys haven't seen yet is a place where no magic works, a place where flight is the only way to get around, and a stranded race of spacefarers with access to high tech things like lazer pistols and shuttle craft. Oh and there is a place where smokepowder does work on land.

I'll get you a post today. I'm sure Vitus won't mind if I bump his game down a notch on the list for this one - and if he does... TOUGH!

One thing I really am looking forward to is I'm going to have a kingdom with a coastline made up of 500 foot cliffs, but the land itself is largely barren. They have great ports, partially natural and partially man made, carved into the bottom of the cliffs. Their entire coastal population lives in cave systems in the sides of the cliffs and get around on the back of huge flying things (haven't decided on birds or something else yet). Their food sources are fishing from the large flying beasts and crops of cave molds, which they trade and are a delicasy in many other parts of the world. I'm thinking of making them dwarves so that they can also have the products from mines. Kinda inspired by that one race from the time machine and a bit from Avatar with the hunters mounted on those flying things. Your flight transportation thing of this.

Just to throw an idea out, instead of having them fly, how about having them get around on giant crabs that scuttle up and down the cliffs?

Possibly. Crabs have gills and have to go back to the water pretty often correct? I'd like to know because I want those that ride the beasts to have a very close bond with them and be with them almost constantly. Even with crabs that might be possible though, have those with the crabs live on levels close to sea level so that within their chambers are pools with fresh, aerated seawater.

Instead of giant crabs... how about a working relationship with Crabmen?
