Rainer winces from the echoes of MacGill's long burst. Spotting the remaining Falange the Aussie levels his Lee-Enfield and squeezes off a shot. The single rifle round is just as loud as the series of pistol round's from MacGill's sub-machinegun. Rainer swings back around the door and leans against the stone as he ejects the spent casing and chambers another round.

The soldier stands up, alarmed by MacGill's shooting, and levels his gun at the floor just as Rainer's shot rings out. He stiffens, looking surprised, as the rifle round pierces his chest and punctures his heart. He collapses forward, off the platform with a thud as Rainer's spent round clinks on the ground.

Barrels still smoking, you survey the church. It is empty now, but for you. Behind the ruins there is very little to look at -- there's probably some supplies in a side room somewhere. All your Spanish companions are dead, which the Lt will probably want to know about...

Of more immediate importance is Steven and his wound, still bleeding quite profusely.

OOC: Ok, all three of you can roll First Aid checks to examine the wound. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the spare PCs -- they may have to just vanish... The camp is a good 10 or 15 mins walk from here.

Seeing the last Falange fall to his shot, Rainer scans the Church one last time before slinging his rifle and and turning to the wounded and sitting Steven. "You'll be all right Doc. Can't say as much for your shirt." Rainer says as he draws his Bowie Knife and cuts Steven's shirt off and wipes away the blood.

"MacGill you ok? I got an ANZAC First Aid Kit in my pack, gimme a hand will you? And if you gotta flask o' something the Doc could use something for the pain." Examining the Peter says, to himself as much as anyone else, "What the hell happened to our old sawbones? Must have buggered off after he shot his wad outa that old musket."

Taking his canteen from his belt, Rainer up ends it over his other hand and Steven's shoulder, "Now, this is going to hurt, Doc." Dropping the canteen, Rainer stuffs a clean, relatively, piece of Steven's shirt in his mouth before reaching into the wound with his clean, actually, hand to extract the bullet.

Just BEFORE Rainer begins to dig away in Steven's shoulder, he realises the bullet won't be there -- it seems the shot came in from above in between the left clavicle, and due to its angle came again just below the clavicle, from the chest. All in all, a pretty lucky hit: it seems to have missed the most important part, the subclavian artery (albeit very narrowly), and came out before hitting any vitals, such as the lungs and heart.

Steven can still feel his arm, so no nerve damage. In summary, the Doc will be fine with a couple of week's rest, and a tight bandage for now.

Rainer obliges, first soaking a piece of spare bandage in alcohol from his kit, carefully cleaning the wound as best he can, and then constricting the area as tight as possible. He also ties Steven's left arm to his chest, so his shifting doesn't loosen the bandage.

After a couple minutes and a drink, Steven will feel good enough to keep walking on. No permanent damage done!

This building is ruined: so much of the interior and architecture has been destroyed it is probably going to be leveled as soon as the war is over.

Near the altar are some tools, however. It seems someone, who clearly knew what they were doing, has carefully and painstakingly restored this broken wad of masonry, statue and part of a stained glass window. There is no sign of the officer or the source of the curious stony sound.

In a side room are some mats and packs, and a couple of crates. The crates are filled with supplies, and the packs have the personals of the Falange soldiers. In total there are three spare magazines, and a small box of rounds for those strange looking sub-machine guns they were using. The box is of 9mm Parabellum, made in Germany. A couple of the rations can also be recognised as coming from there.

Steven gritted his teeth for the expectant pain. But it didn't come, as Rainer informed him that the bullet had already come out. With a sigh of relief that noone had to dig around his shoulder, Rainer began to patch up the arm. After a few winces and several grunts, Steven's arm was bandaged and strapped across his chest, and a few minutes later Steven was standing once again.

Thank you Rainer, think I owe you a drink. He says as jovially as he can, while he slaps Rainer on the back. With some assistance from Rainer, Steven walks into the church, his head was still spinning but he wasn't going to give up now. Approaching the altar Steven had a look around taking in the sights of the altar. No one has touched anything yet have they? I want to see if I can figure out what was happening here. Releasing his grip in Rainer, Steven began to carefully inspect the altar and its surrounding areas.

This would have been a beautiful sight to behold, if it was still in one piece. I can tell you that for certain, but now... such a shame. Steven said as he continued his examination. Once satisfied that he wasn't missing anything, Steven walked up and looked at the tool kit, seeing if anything was missing before picking it up and wrapping it up.

MacGill finally calms down and comes back to himself, having slumped against the wall in shock. He realized someone had called his name earlier. He looks around and notices Steven, shoulder bound and walking, near the altar of the church. Exhausted he reaches up and finds a grip to help himself stand. With a sigh he throws the rifle down onto the nearby corpse and retrieves his own pistol, doing his best to keep it clean. Hard to do being covered in so much blood. He slowly wanders up to near Steven and puts in his two cents "It kinda sounded like the altar shifted, but with all the shooting and stuff all I'm sure of is a noise came from this direction."

Seeing that Steven is doing alright, and has things in hand there Eric wanders down and goes through some of the equipment left by the Falange. He uses some of the spare clothes to clean himself off as best he can, including a liberal use of their water. Feeling a little better now, Eric wanders out of the side room and grabs one of the machine guns. "Hey Rainer, what do ya know about this thing? I bet the Lt. will wanna see this. I sure as hell ain't familiar with it." He gives his irritated eye another swipe as it still is bothering him and swears, stumbling his way nearer to Rainer until he stops and blinks a few times. His vision clears enough to finish moving to his comrade, showing him the weapon.

Taking the weapon from MacGill, Rainer pulls out the magazine and examine it before pulling back the bolt and checking the weapon's chamber. "I've never used one of these before myself, not really a Big Game sort of weapon, but I've heard a bit from my gunsmith in the States. They're fully automatic, like a Heavy Machinegun, but they fire pistol rounds so they can be used by a single soldier and in close quarters. Supposed to be devastating but unwieldy, but you may have figured that out. The Yanks and the Germans are the ones really developing them, thought I hear the Finns may have developed something spectacular, but they're not exporting it. The Americans call them Sub-Machineguns and the Germans are MachinePistolen or some strange made up word. Considering the Falange are being supported by Germany these are probably German guns. Which is probably bad news for us."

Handing the weapon back to MacGill he says, "Hang on to that, it may come in handy. Check the Falanges for more ammo before you leave, the gun is loaded with magazines like this already filled with rounds." Rainer hands back the magazine as well.

Steven looked around the altar area for a few minutes, until he sighed in defeat and leant against the altar itself to catch his breath a bit. Jumping up he looked down at the altar before smiling. Think I found something here. Steven knelt down and picked up a handful of dust that was laying around. Slowly he poured it against the edge of the altar. Yep, definitely found something. Then the Doctor began to crawl around the edge of the altar looking quite intently where the altar and the ground met. Looks like this altar is covering something underneath it, a stairwell maybe. Before we open it we should be ready to go down. I am running low on ammo, don't suppose there was any 9 mm Browning laying around? Also see if the Falanges had any flashlights on them, we are probably going to need it down there.

Judging by this place I would say escape tunnels that have been fashioned out of perhaps... catacombs. Like I said earlier the Christian built on top of a Moor mosque. Be wary down there, I doubt there is going to be only one tunnel down there, would hate to get split up down there.

Steven wasn't quite prepared to open the altar yet, he wanted to make sure everyone was ready to go before opening it up.

Flashlights are promptly procured from the packs. There's enough for one each. It does look as though, now Steven's pointed it out, that the altar has recently been shifted...

Taking out his old ANZAC flashlight and attaches it to one of the straps of his backpack pointing forward. "Grab one of those long magazines from the Falanges, see if those are nine millimeter. If they are, make sure the rounds fire out of your pistol first."

Heading over to the altar Rainer shoulders his rifle and says, "Where's the entrance? I want to be ready in case any one is down there."

Evan retrieves the 9mm ammo for the sub-machine guns, grabbing the ammo box as well as any magazine that still has ammo in it after the fight. He sticks one sub-machine gun in a pack and shoulders another one, figuring he'll keep one for himself and give one to the Lt. He fills the mag in the gun, and another one besides just to be ready. Evan then passes a flashlight to the Doc and shoves one for himself into his belt. He takes a close look at the Doc and doesn't like what he sees.

"Hey Doc you really don't look so good." Evan says with concern "Maybe we better take you back to the HQ for some aid. The Lt. can send a troop down to explore this. I mean, with you out one arm and us with only one professional soldier...

Steven pulled his pistol out and ejected the clip onto the altar, with one hand he removed one of the remaining bullets. Can I have a look at their ammo please? He said holding out his hand, the bullet resting in there. Once he had one of the Falanges ammunition in his hand he compared the two, while they were the same diameter their lengths were significantly different. This isn't going to fit in my Walther, the two bullets are different lengths. He said a bit dejected. Don't suppose anyone happened to grab one of their pistols? Otherwise I could try throwing my Walther at someone soon. With a bit of trouble he loaded the Browning ammunition back into the Walther clip and inserted the clip. Steven then grabbed a Luger from someone and stowed it for easy access if needed.

Ah yes of course, the stairs. If you will come here, you will notice a fine crack along the edge of the altar, as well as the smooth worn stones just here. Steven pointed out the sights on the backside of the altar where it looks like the altar has dragged over the stones quite a few times in the past, as well as the distinct "clean zone" about an inch or so around the altar, that is clear of debris. I agree Evan, this is probably what we heard moving when we first got here, I think our friend made a hasty escape down here, as evidenced by him leaving his tools up he. He smiled as he thought about the new tool kit he had acquired.

He waves Evan off. Look, I have a job to do. If we go find some help I will probably be out of commission for a few days, while Trafalgar makes a run for it. That ain't going to happen. Steven wasn't looking too good, as Evan had pointed out, but it wasn't going to stop him yet. I have had my fair shares of scrapes in the past, this one is no different. He looks down at the altar than back at Evan. But I appreciate the concern.

Now then, if we are ready perhaps someone should push this altar out of the way, it should be fairly easy. Steven drew his flashlight, and turned it on to make sure it worked. Then he waited for the altar to be moved.

"Hey, your call there Doc. Just don't say we didn't warn ya when things get worse." Evan replies with a grim smile and a wave of both hands at the same time. Evan then turns to the Altar and looks at the marks Steven had indicated, where the Altar had been pushed back. He walks around opposite those marks and leans back against the Altar. Sliding downward with his arms resting on top, he braces his legs and pushes...

And nothing happens except Evan gets a little more red in the face. He looks over his shoulder and then back into the room again. "Hey Rainer, how bout you help me out some?!" he says with some chagrin in his posture and tone.

"Doc, do me a favor and get that pistol back out in case theres anyone down there." Rainer slings his rifle and goes to help MacGill. Bracing against the altar he tries to help push but his feet slide on the smooth stone floors, "You sure there isnt a switch or something hidden around here?"
