Pulling a discussion out of a rolling thread: In my RL game, our DM constantly complains about the borked economy. Labourers make 1 silver a day; which means the gap between rich and poor is massive; and the gap between PC (And Aristocrat) and other NPC is still massive. A PC moving from level 1-2 gets 900gp on average. That takes a few days of adventuring (assuming standard 4 encounters per day). In a few days, a PC makes more than a dozen NPC's in their entire life, and enough to become a noble instantly. At level 2. It is kinda weird. |

Well, at least we won't have to worry about rations. 1200 lbs or so of horse tartar will last quite a while.
Plus, its good to be PC. Maybe my kobold will turn socialist in his sure-to-be-brief career... Last edited by tieflung; 03-07-2010 at 09:43 PM. |

Yeah, but that's why we're PCs. We're heroes!
__________________Also, in 3.5's attempt to make everything and everyone balanced, your point is moot (I think). Only an untrained laborer gains a silver piece a day, and it says that "most people in the world are Experts with Skill Focus on their area of work". Given how easy is to be level 1, I think the only untrained helpers around would be five year old. Besides people specifically doing something outside of their field, of course. |

Hmmm, I was under the impression most people were commoners, and that an expert with skill focus would be the local (craftsman of x), and then a level 2-5 expert with skill focus and another skill boosting feat would be a legendary (craftsman of x). Guess I should look over my DMG.

Hmm, yeah, I supposse most people would be commoners. They'd still take Skill Focus, since they're getting feats anyways.

Hey! I've got news you all might enjoy! Since all of your characters know vaguely the perils and demands of dungeons, it would follow you'd give yourselves some extra preparation before delving into the depths of a dungeon from which no one has returned. Therefore, you can all add points as normal for a single skill from the following list as if it were in-class: craft (any), Knowledge (architecture and engineering, or dungeoneering), or a single point in Speak Language (goblin, orc, dwarf, or undercommon).
__________________Note: This is to give you all access to peripheral skills you might not take otherwise. Make sure they're still in character (for example, a nobleman is more likely to have ranks in Knowledge than Blacksmithing or learning Undercommon). |

I will not be taking advantage of that offer, as I'm short skills already.

Ah, excellent.

Well, Aristocrats get speak language and all knowledges as class skills anyways.

I got armorsmithing, but masterwork armor tools means I can't bring 50 feet of silk rope, and my weight is too high for hemp, so I hope someone else has the inevitably useful rope.

Ah, as a monk with no gear, I think I may need to borrow someone's tools when it comes to crafting. What's the crafting type for making Caltrops? Since I am no spellcaster, and can't make Acid flasks, that's what I'll make.

Likely we won't be able to do much crafting in the dungeons. Instead it will be a question of salvaging things and repairing things. Making Caltrops is in Weapons, which someone already has, so maybe take Alchemy (you can be our taste tester for strange potions). Or a speak language?
