Chapter 3: The start of a rebellion?

The mismatched group of free men and one battered woman leave Castle Braga through the once talking doors, and start their descent down the winding road. Downhill, as they reach the bridge across the castle's circular canal, they find the bridge down, the steel gate open and not a living soul to be found... Two dead guards lie face up on the wooden bridge, with awful bite wounds at their necks... It seems as if something ripped out their throats. The afternoon sun shines down on their bloodless faces. Through the gates, in front of the adventurers, Yukorcity lies at their feet. The small square directly before them is deserted, but beyond that a shopping street opens up, with a few side streets and alleys. Far ahead, near some stores a few people are seen walking in and out of the buildings. From this distance it is hard to judge who or what kind of people they might be.

Now that they had escaped, Gildor was at a loss about where to go. He had come to Yukorcity to find rumored library of arcane knowledge, but he was certain now that that rumor was only part of a greater design to bring him into Braga's clutches. Unsure of what to do for the first time today, he fell back on Bebop to figure out what to do. "What's our strategy, Bebop? Should we take refuge in this city for a time, or flee from this place with all haste? The only thing on my agenda is to transfer the enchantment on Ignatius's robes, but other than that, I'm without direction."

Bebop rushes down with the others to find the grisly scene on the bridge. "Ah, it seems our friend the dog-dwarf was here. Let us hope he does not kill any civilians, and let us hope the others are safe." When Gildor asks his question, Bebop pauses, scratching his goatee and looking from the city to the castle and then back again. "Well, much though I do long for the comforts of civilized society, I'd give it the rest of the day at best before the old bastard stops cowering and sends out a search team." He shakes his head, looking lost. "But we have to rest at some point, we won't make it long on the road like this. And I would also feel a mite better if we knew Ossyn, Ezekiel, and the others were alive." He turns to Digana, "Have you heard any rumors about plots against your father in the city? Anyone who might hide us for a day or so?"

"Plots against my father? In the city?" Digana looks at Bebop incredulously. "Ehh, little man, as you might have learned by now, I've been stuck in that castle for almost my entire life... and especially the later years I have not been allowed out of it. Come to think of it, I really need to get out of this dirty dress and into something more comfortable, and cleaner... Wait a sec. Where did that Ossyn guy go, and where's that brown bearded hammer man? Did they just leave you or what? That Ossyn is probably waiting for a chance to sleep with his new girlfriend, but if I know that Hannah a bit, that's probably not going to happen... anyways, I'm getting carried away here. Plots against my father..." the woman glances at the signs in the distance. "There have been rumors going around among the nobles at the castle about a few people who have during certain times been known to have made a few sensitive remarks about their opinions of what's good for Yukor and what could be done better... but political opponents you could hardly call them in this dictatorshit-... ehh, dictatorship of a nation. One of the 'opinionated' who sometimes writes articles in the YC Current with a kind of critical undertone, is dr. Lodden... he's a doctor who turned into a journalist after a failed experiment on a patient, and while talking to all kinds of people around town, he began writing for the city newspaper. Perhaps he's someone to talk to..." But Digana lifts her shoulders in a 'how else should I know' kind of way.

Gildor nodded in understanding. "It may not be much, but it's a lead. Bebop, you seem to be more at home in the city than I. I'll defer to you while we're in Yukorcity."

"Now do not forget the fallen face of woe!" Paror laughs "More than one are at home in cities like rustic Garthak in the caves..." he walks forward a few steps and turns on his heels for dramatic effect "We all have unfinished business, and mine ties in so kindly with your I do so believe."

Digana looks at the purple poet incredulously, "And what do you mean by that??"

"I was here last night! A small party for the upper class, the scoial gathering of Yukor! Princes, dukes and earls all came, we chatted, we drank, debauchery!" he sighs remembering the event "Yes... the local lovelies in dresses that cost the kingdom... Ignatus... a h=man with charming words, but his speech was slightly twisted... he seems to enjoy his father's darker side a slight too much..." he sigh again and rounds it all off with a single statement that cannot be misunderstood "I was here to kill Florain"

He then turns to Digana, expecting a verbal barrage at the least "Not all stars burn the same, some burn with passions other wander through the sky... Not all are same from kin to kin and not all are born to rot. Some scheme and plot, others life and... life!" Paror laughs, a brief giggle rounded with a wink "Now what do you think of me?"

When Gildor defers to Bebop he waves his hands. "I appreciate your confidence, friend Gildor, but you might be mistaken. While I am quite comfortable in cities in general, I had only been in this kingdom but a few nights before being clubbed over the head and thrown into that dungeon." As Paror begins talking, Bebop raises an eyebrow. "It would seem you know more than I, though I know not of what you speak..."

"Florain, that pompous bastard... what has he done to you that merits murder? And am I to conclude you didn't succeed? But... did Ignatius show himself in public? He hasn't done that for years..." Digana is lost in thought for a moment.

"He was never alone long enough to taste the slithe blade rip..." he sighs "Ignatus made a brief appearance before muttering about work... I would like to chat with him some time..." He walks another few steps away before turning on his feels "Florain? 'Tis my own business and it shall stay, all mere nobles merit murder in my eyes... time after a fashion that is"

Bebop gives a sheepish look at Paror. "Ermm... I'm afraid you won't be chatting with Ignatius anytime soon... unless you've the power to speak with spirits..." He gives a "not my fault" shrug and then continues, "It seems last night was someone's final party at least... who is this Florain and what has he done? If he's in league with foul Ignatius he no doubt deserves such fate."

"Aww" he sighs as if cooing to a baby "You killed a noble" as talk turns to Florain he raises an eyebrow "None of your business, a personal matter, that is all"

Bebop frowns. As a gnome, he is used to being patronized, but that doesn't mean he enjoys it. "Forgive me for being so blunt, but it is our business if you're planning on accompanying us any further. You've done nothing so far to earn our trust, and being cryptic and secretive is not going to improve your status. Who's to say you are not spying on us? One of Braga's minions with a bit more initiative than the rest?"

"You think of me to highly" he laughs "I never asked you for your personal story did I? And I do not wish to know... A man can have many secrets and few he does not wish to share. Suffice it is about lost love and lost souls to those imparted... I am not on your side or this Braga... We have similar goals at the moment, to strike the castle and kill a man, to scratch one back... I can help scratch yours..."
