Okay, still getting used to the slightly modified forum code here, but here's my proposed character. I'm still threshing out more of his background, but you should be able to get a general idea of what he's like from his annotated stat sheet. Also, this is all subject to ST approval, and I'm a firm believer in sharing out-of-character knowledge for the betterment of the game, so if you want to be surprised, don't look.

--Mentor: 4 (Onishi Haruki, Li-Hai sect. A weathered old Japanese man, looking slightly more like a janitor than an Atemi master. Onishi first encountered Jack at a martial arts demonstration. Jack was dabbling, hoping to pick up a few sweet moves and then pass through. Onishi, as a matter of habit, scanned him for any sort of Grand Destiny, and was practically overwhelmed by what he found. Onishi now supervises Jack’s training, though he gives the younger man as much free reign as he can lest he interfere with the destiny.
Personality-wise, Onishi is tolerant but reserved. He keeps a few close friends but is polite enough to strangers. His English is lightly accented, and he prefers speaking in Japanese. The fact that his charge has been woefully slow in picking up the language annoys him, even if he only shows it with the occasional facial twitch.)
--Destiny: 4 (Fire. A crumbling tower. Something tap tap tapping on the underside of a sheet of lake ice. A quiet temple. Crows, noiselessly popping into little smears of feathers. Jack, looking lost and confused, walking down a narrow road with a backpack slung over his shoulders, two moons high overhead. A lobster, thrashing in a pot of boiling water. A serpent twined about a lotus, one fang black and the other white. The meanings aren’t readily clear, but a number of Akashic agree that Jack is important to the future of their order. Onishi believes very strongly in his own entropy-assisted interpretation of this destiny, which is that Jack needs to be thrown untried into the thick of things.)

Background:

 

Jack awakened out of a kind of quiet desperation. All of his life, he'd been expecting to find meaning when he graduated. It didn't come. Instead, he spent weeks poking around his home in Oklahoma, growing steadily more restless with every passing non-revelation.

The sun was bright outside, he had a degree in Chinese, and there was a paid internship just a few keystrokes away from being his. His family expected him to take it. What friends he hadn't drifted away from during his last year at Oklahoma state had gotten carefully worded e-mails telling them he was going to take it. The nice folks on the other end of his student loan certainly wanted him to take it.

The deadline for the internship went scudding by like a passing cloud. He moved out of his parents' house and started working at a gas station. In his spare time, mostly to fight off boredom, he began taking lessons. They weren't in anything specific at first, but he'd see a posting in the local paper for water-coloring instructions, or a course on bar-tending, or an introduction to fencing, and he'd go for it. As time passed, he began to find that he was more interested in physical activities. He stayed with yoga, weight-lifting, and a handful of different martial arts. Juggling, voice lessons, and poker fell by the wayside.

For several years, Onishi had been traveling across the united states, giving martial arts demonstrations as a way to draw a crowd and scout out potential Akashics. He encountered Jack purely by chance, scanned him for destiny, and practically abducted him. Although he was taken aback by Onishi's enthusiasm for teaching "a student with such potential", Jack was delighted to be a part of someone else's cause.

Appearance and general personality:

 

Jack is of medium build, with sandy blond hair and a kind of general quietness. Although he's not a slacker, he does tend to consider whether there's a point to the work he's doing before he does it. He prefers to dress in loose, baggy clothes, but doesn't have any problems adapting to other styles as needed. He is something of a loser, but the Akashics seem really excited about his destiny, so he doesn't let it get to him much.

Background
WARNING: This is her background story.

 

Brandi was leading a fairly normal life. Still in high school, she was looking into which college to join when her Aunt Crystal passed away.

In the will, she was left an old mansion near Rock City, Illinois. Which just happened to be near Augustana Callege, which she had already been accepted into.

After high school graduation, Brandi packed up her `86 Pinto and headed to her new home. After a couple of days of getting everything arranged and cleaned up, the door bell rang. Carefully looking out the door, she found it was her Uncle James, who everyone had assumed, or maybe hoped, was dead.

After a brief family reunion, he invited himself to move in. And although something told her not to let him, she didn't put up any resistance.

Well, weeks went by, and he began teaching her about Magik. He said that he saw that she had the power within her. At first she didn't believe him, but soon, she was doing things that seemed to be impossible.

Another month went by, and he began bringing more and more friends over. Some older men, but also some fellow college students. During a night of heavy partying, Uncle James started making advances on her. After pushing him away for the second time, James grabbed her head from behind, and slammed it against a nearby doorjam.

When she awoke the next morning, she found herself bound and naked inside her closet. After fighting her way out, she got dressed. She almost called the police, but a note from the monster warned her from doing so.

Fearing for her own life, as well as others she cares for, she has hidden the attack from everyone. Occasionally, she will awaken remembering what happened after he knocked her out.

Amisha is a young Indian woman, brought up in America from before she completed her first year. Her parents were very religious Buddhists, and she has learned all the traditions, becoming so interested she majored in Religious Studies (doubled with International Studies focused on SE Asia) at Indiana University.

It was through her internal search that she first Awakened. As an Orphan, her concept of what a Mage is viewed through her understanding of religion; "Ascension" is akin to her long-time belief in nirvana. Though she may not know the common vernacular, she understands the same concepts, and has learned a good deal on her own.
