Insacrum: Ianthis (EXAMPLE PRIVATE THREAD)

Tier 2
:
Half Elf
Inquisitor
Ian
this
Basic Description:
"You can't feel the heat until you hold your hand within the flame."
Ianthis never understood the meaning of this line of scripture until it was too late. Holding her hand to the flame was too literal of a translation. The flame not only burnt her hand, but her robe caught fire. This resulted in serious burns for a girl of only 10. With burns so severe, No one knew if she would survive the experience.
But survive she did; with scars over half her body, including a patch that rises from her neck, covering the majority of her right cheek. The burn affects the look of her smile, and her right eye looks to droop compared to her right.
Now an adult, Ianthis stands 5'9", with wispy brown hair that she keeps cut short. While she could be considered attractive if looking at her from her right, the scars she has gained as an acolyte have become a badge of honor that she proudly shows to anyone.
Character Background:
While working for the church, Ianthis wears armor suited for battle (if she would ever encounter it), over which she wears the holy vestments of her order. Depending on the type of mission, Ianthis usually uses some type of bow or crossbow, which she doesn't have a preference on, but she is never without her scimitar.
Ianthis is nothing if not meticulous. It was ingrained upon her as an acolyte, and she continue to hold onto it. Her clothing, her weapons, and her action in and out of combat are a reflection of that.
Ianthis will worry at a problem until she is able to determine an acceptable solution. It is this dogged mentality that lead her to be approach for initiation to the church's inquisitorial staff. Her faith leads her actions, and her actions work towards the church’s goals.
In a group, Ianthis can seem to be mysterious, working for the goals given to her by the church. She rarely lets others know the goals set forth by the church, unless they are also followers.
While her goals may seem mysterious to her group, Ianthis is none-the-less a teammate of extreme value. While she is dogged in her goals for the church, Ianthis is just as dogged in the goals set forth by the group. While this might divert her from or church's goal, extending the time involved in completing the church's task, she will eventually complete all tasks set before her.
Ianthis doesn't know much of her past. All of her memories revolve around her time as a child growing up within the church. In the beginning she was a very willful individual, but her experience with the flame, and her long recovery that it resulted in it changed her.
While unconscious from the burns and recovering, Ianthis claimed to have been given a vision from her deity. She's never revealed to anyone the details of that vision, but since then she has been a stout devotee of Sarenrae.
It was several years later that Ianthis's dogged determination started to reveal itself to the upper members of the church. It started with simple puzzle solving, then with logic, questions, and contemplations of faith. It later evolved to her being able to piece together snippets of information from several locations to form a bigger picture.
This was almost disastrous when her candidacy for inquisition was being discussed among the staff of the church. Throughout this time, talk of her origin quickly began to circulate around, and Ianthis was able to piece together a lot of information in a short amount of time.
Ianthis was able to gather that she was born a bastard daughter to a wealthy merchant within Absalom. When her mother died when she was an infant, she was given over to her father. This infuriated her father's wife, who was unwilling to accept proof of her father's infidelity in her household. As such, Ianthis was sent to the church of Sarenrae. Ianthis was never told the name of her father, her mother, or the step-mother who forced her father to abandon her to the church.
When Ianthis unknowingly went to the director of the inquisitors asking questions about her origin, it confirmed her natural abilities and astute nature, which was needed in an inquisitor of the church. From that day on, her training started, without the knowledge of her parents ever revealed to her.
Training was difficult. Waking before dawn, training in different styles of archery and swordplay. A meager breakfast, followed by meditation and contemplation. Mid-day meal is followed by riddles and logic puzzles. Another small meal for dinner, followed by more physical work to train their bodies. But the worst were the nights being kidnapped and interrogated about the previous days information. It was during one of these sessions that Ianthis came to understand 'You can't feel the heat until you hold your hand within the flame.'
How can you hope to interrogate someone, if you've never been interrogated. But it wasn't only about interrogation. How can you understand someone who hungers if you have never gone hungry before. How can you know pain, if you've never felt it. How can you give justice, if you've never had a need for it.
