At 5'9", Julia stands a few inches taller than her sister, and her scale usually reads around 130 lbs. She has short, light brown hair that is sometimes messy depending on how late she was up, and light blue eyes.
To Julia, wearing something without pockets is a completely foreign concept, as everything from her shirt, to her jacket, and pants, have pockets for various little gadgets. On the same token, it is rare for her to be without her pack, for much the same reason; there are some things that are just too big for pockets! Her pendant was a gift from her sister, and it emits a soft red light in the dark. Julia has thus far resisted the urge to take it apart and see just how it worked, for worry of not being able to put it back together right.
Goal/Motivation
Julia's primary motivations are her love for her sister, and the guilt she feels over what she caused. The former is what caused her to leave her hometown, in order to find her sister's missing Pokemon, and along the way she hopes to overcome the latter by using her knowledge of technology to make something that will allow her sister to realize the dreams Julia feels she stole. That, however, needs something in abudance that she dearly lacks right now - money.
Of course, her sister also made her promise to try her hand at the league, and have fun... She doesn't know if she'll be successful as she may be trying for too much, but at this point it'd be worse to not try. A small part of her hopes she'll come face-to-face with the Pokemon from her childhood again.
Background
Julia Kretschmer was born in Enchania Town, daughter to Erik Kretschmer, and younger sibling to Sofia who is five years her elder. The two girls couldn't have been more different growing up, with Julia more of the shy, quiet type, and her sister the outgoing, adventurous type. Her sister was quite into the idea of training, and raising Pokemon, but Julia... she was more interested in the devices that held them.
At a young age, while her sister was giving her mother a headache, Julia happened to wander into her father's workshop as he was working. He was in the middle of testing a new Pokeball he created, and Julia became fascinated by the small, and what it seemed like at the time, magic balls. By the time her mother had gotten her sister to settle down and noticed she was gone, she started to panic, and it was only when she called to Julia's father, Erik, to help find her that he noticed Julia standing there watching him. From then on, she was allowed into his workship (which she hadn't been previously), though her sister was strictly barred after the... 'What's in here!?' incident.
Over the next few years, it became routine for Erik to watch Julia, while Sofia was watched by her mother. When she was old enough, Erik finally allowed Julia to actually help him create one of the Pokeballs, and she quickly learned that it wasn't magic that made them work, but technology, and from then on she started gobbling up every little piece of technology she could get her hands on. Everything that seemed to work by magic to a child were the sorts of things she loved to take apart, just to see how they worked. What sort of technology made them tick? Of course, she had a tendency to not pay attention to just how it as put together, leaving her father to end up having to fix everything she broke. When Sofia turned ten, she got her first Pokemon (as a pet, so she could train it and be ready to get her license at 15), while Julia got her own little toolkit. To Julia, her 10th birthday gift was way better, considering some parts were handcrafted by her father.
A few days after Julia's 10th birthday, while her parents were both out and had left her sister Sofia in charge (who had thankfully grown up... a little), Sofia dragged Julia out of her own workshop (set up in her room), and out into the nearby forest with the promise that 'she had something awesome to show her!' and the statement that she 'needed to get out in the sun a little more, or else she'd end up looking like a ghost like dad does!' The two were fairly close, so Julia didn't object to spending some time with her sister, and went along with the idea - excited - little did she know what sort of trouble they were going to run into.
Sofia had discovered a cave system in the woods a few weeks previous, which was inhabited by some strange-looking Pokemon she hadn't seen before. They were what she wanted to show Julia, but when they got to the chamber deep within the caves where they should have been, the Pokemon weren't there. Sofia told Julia to stay put for a moment so she could look around and find them before stepping down a side tunnel and leaving Julia alone, in the dark, with only her teddy bear and a small flashlight. Julia had always been uneasy about being in the dark, but it wasn't really a problem before since her big sis was usually around to hlep her, but this time... her sister was gone for what felt like an eternity. When she saw a light appear down one of the tunnels, she immediately ran to it, hoping to find her sister.
She didn't.
Instead, she found a strange, red Pokemon that gave off a faint blue glow (which she later learned was called Rotom.) She followed it for a little while, wondering what it was doing here, and quickly coming to realize that it seemed to be... lost, it seemed like it was looking for something. She cleared her throat, and asked in a meek, quiet voice, "Are you lost?"
The Rotom spun around and stared at her for a moment, and the mischievious little Pokemon it was, immediatley got an idea. It hovered toward Julia, slowly, and when it reached her... it vanished, leaving her standing there yet again - alone, in the dark, with only her flashlight.
... Then her bear talked.
The teddy was something her father helped her put together. It was filled with some circuitry so that, when the ears were pressed, it would move its' limbs, and said one of a few pre-recorded lines. This time, she hadn't pulled on the ears though, so when it talked, it made her drop the flashlight, and it, in shock and back away.
"W-What!?" She asked, thinking she was just hearing things.
The bear's head slowly rotated, a full 180 degrees, to be able to look at her. Its' eyes were glowing red, and it uttered three simple words, "I love you!"
The bear wasn't designed to handle the amount of electricity surging through it thanks to Rotom, and as it finished, the bear's whole head caught on fire.
Julia was... horrified. She screamed, turned, and ran as fast as her small legs would take her while caling for her sister. Sofia, who had returned to the place Julia had supposed to have been waiting, was starting to panic when Julia didn't answer her calls, and when she heard Julia screaming, well, that didn't help ease her fears. Both girls ran through the dark caves, Julia in complete darkness, scared as hell, while Sofia tried to find her, while calling her name. Sofia finally caught up with Julia after several minutes, and became almost as scared as her sister when her flashlight illuminated the angry rock Pokemon whose territory the girls had intruded on. Sofia grabed Julia, and slowly started trying to pul the frightened 10-year old away, when the rock type attacked.
Sofia sent out her Pokemon, but the rock type was too strong, and overwhelmed it, forcing her to return it and just drag her sister along in a full-on sprint toward the entrance of the caves. Sofia was glad when she saw the light at the end of the tunnel, and she glanced over her shoulder to see how far behind the rock type was, or if it had given up. Her attention diverted, she didn't see the small hole in the ground, and got tripped up.
The rock type, who hadn't given up, and was right behind them still, didn't hesitate to brutally tackle Sofia from behind, sending Sofia flying forward, where she landed on top of Julia, unconscious, and trapping the smaller girl. Julia, unsure of what else to do, just played dead. The rock type left a few minutes later, confident it had dealt with the intruders.
Julia dragged herself out from under Sofia, and despite her attempts was unable to wake her sister. She wanted to go for help, but not only did she not want to be alone running back to town, she wasn't sure if she could find the caves again, and didn't want to leave her sister behind... so she stayed, right next to Sofia.
They were found almost a full day later, and reunited with their thankful parents. A doctor was called to look them both over, while Julia was told to stay in her room. In one of the rare times she didn't listen, she slipped out after an hour to go see how her sister was doing, and it was there she was able to overhear the doctor talking to her father in the next room... and say a few lines she has never forgotten.
"Sofia's injuries are... fairly serious. She is lucky to be alive with how long it took to find her. If we had gotten to her sooner, she probably would have been fine but... as is... I'm sorry to say... the damage is... well... " A pause, a sigh, "She'll probably never walk again, and that is if she really lucky. Worst case scenario... she won't have any feeling in her extremities."
Julia was only 10, but being fairly bright, she understood. If she had gone for help, Sofia would have been okay. If she hadn't wandered off, Sofia would be okay. It was all her fault...
Julia spent the next several years with the guilt hanging over her, even with her sister, and even her parents telling her it wasn't her fault. Sofia even admitted it was her own fault, but Julia just didn't buy it. In her mind, it was her fault, and little was going to change that.
She refused to go outside very often, got really scared of the dark to the point she made several nightlights so her room was always lit up, and got rid of all her toy bears. She started working more closely with her father, and jumped on any opportunity to help her sister no matter how inconvienant it was for Julia personally. Her sister, now paralyzed from the waist down, decided against trying to be a Pokemon Trainer - it would just be too difficult - adding more for Julia to feel bad about, though Julia never said that, knowing Sofia would just try to get into how it wasn't her fault again.
To make matters worse, after the stories of Pokemon vanishing started, the disappearances made their way to Enchania Town. Sofia's best friend, and only Pokemon, among them. Julia tried to comfort her sister, but it just lead to a big fight, and in a heated moment her sister shouted the words, "THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT!"
Sofia immediately regretted it, but before she could take it back, Julia ran off. Julia didn't return for several days, leaving everyone sick with worry that she ran off. In reality, she was looking for Sofia's Pokemon. She searched high and low, to no avail. Julia finally returned home, but the reunion was brief: she came to get her things, as she was leaving, with the vow to Sofia to fix everything she caused and find her Pokemon. Sofia couldn't bring herself to try changing Julia's mind, and instead, just got Julia to make a few other promises.
Julia set off the next day, with her Porygon, and though she did not have any idea where to start... she got a helping hand when she noticed an expedited letter in the mail. It was addressed to Mr. Kretschmer, but someone had opened it before delivery, making her curious as to the content...
Mr. Kretschmer,
We would like to request you make your way to Isalia Town, we are in need of your expertise in the area of Pokeballs.
- Isalia Archelogical Team
Julia rubbed her eyes, trying to pus away the sleep, while accidentally jabbing her own forehead with the screwdriver in her hand. She winced, and grumbled, it wasn't the first time she'd done that, and it wasn't going to be the last tonight.
It was almost 3:30 in the morning, but you'd have a hard time being able to tell without looking out the window. Julia had the ceiling light on, several lamps around her desk plugged in and focused on the jumble of Pokeball parts and tools scattered across it, and every other outlet in the room had either a lamp or nightlight plugged in.
Julia sat cross-legged on her chair in her PJs, fussing over a Pokeball she couldn't get working - one in a long line of failures. Her father had showed her the basics, but had left it to her to make her first one. 'You learn more through failure then success,' he'd said, 'How do you think I know as much as I do?' She'd been at it for the last several hours. She was close, she knew it, and she just needed a little more to get it working. Just ten more minutes... as she had been telling herself every half-hour since it hit 1. She had to get up early tomorrow to take her sister to the mart, something that seemed lost on the 17, almost 18 year-old.
"Okay, tighten that, adjust that... No, that doesn't look right. Adjust a little more and... there we go. Now-" Her line of thought was broken by a whirring sound behind her, and she immediately grabbed her hammer and spun around. Her eyes sweeped across her room, from the various parts spread out all over her bed, the overflowing garbage can of failed Pokeballs, and some grease stains on the carpet next to the bike she was trying to attach an electric motor to... for science, you see, a self-pedaling bike, or something. She still wasn't quite sure. Regardless, nothing moved, no more noises... she started to turn back to her desk when she heard it again.
This time she turned in time to catch one of the wheels on her bike coming to a stop. There was DEFINITLEY something going on here. Slowly, she rose to her feet, and started moving toward the bike with her hammer raised. She limped the first few steps, with pins and needles running through her right leg. Just as the feeling passed, about five feet from the bike, the motor sprang to life. Julia jumped back, on the edge of shrieking about it being possessed when an old memory came to her - Rotom, and that old teddy bear. Could it be? The Rotom? Why? Why was it here? Did... did it come find her after all these years just to scare her again?
Julia was frozen, unable to make a decision: attack, run, call for help, or... ?
Her eyes drifted to the Pokeball she was working on, and suddenly had an idea: she'd catch it! Then she'd make that Rotom explain why it scared her all those years ago, and why it came back!
She ran over to her desk and snagged up the Pokeball, while the motor continued to hum away in the background. She quickly popped the ball open, and made several final adjustments before hurling it at the motor, "Got you!"
To her surprise, the Pokeball opened up and drew in a red energy from the motor. It dropped to the floor, and she looked on as it rolled about in anticipaton: was it going to stay? Was the ball going to work?
'Ping!'
The audible chime signalled as the ball stopped wiggling. It took a minute for it to sink in. She caught it. She caught Rotom. She caught a Pokemon. Her first. Overcome with a mixture of excitement, she rushed forward, grabbed the ball, and released it onto the bed.
The pink and light blue polygonal Pokemon appeared, and stared back at her before uttering, "Porygon!"
"Wait, what the heck are you!?" Julia questioned, her excitement fading. That. Was. Not. Rotom. Then, she was hit with a second revelation and looked to the Pokeball in her hand. Everything had happened so fast, she wasn't quite sure how she got the ball to work! Frustrated, she slumped back in her chair, glanced at the clock, and could only let out an annoyed, "Argh!"
