Character Background:
Deep in the mountains, in a small nameless Dwarven hamlet, Urtha lived peacefully with her husband and two children. She and the other villagers frequently heard word from travelers about the growing numbers of goblin and orc raids in the area, but such rumors seemed to be nothing more than stories in this quiet village.
However, the peace was not to last. On a particularly gloomy day, a great storm came over the mountains and lightning struck upon the Great Tree in the middle of the village, catching the main forge nearby caught fire. The fire spread through the town and it seemed as the very Earth beneath the dwarves' feet seemed to be ablaze. Urtha tried to protect her family, but instead ended up killing her husband, and her two children burnt to death when her family's house burned down.
Urtha came upon her house looking to save her family from the burning blaze. Earlier that day, she had seen her husband consorting with that no good Gnome-woman. She hoped he had come home to help protect their two sons Dreg and Cairn. As she came upon the house, she found it already starting to burn from the floor to the ceiling. Without missing a step she charged in to call out to her family.
What she saw next would haunt her forever. Lying upon the floor of their burning house lay Dreg and Cairn, lifeless, a small pool of blood spilling out upon the floor next to a small wound in their bodies. Above them with an empty look in his eyes stood her husband, Burk, a knife in his hand, standing next to the Gnome-woman. "What have you done!?!" she cried out in anguish. The Gnome-like creature, which was slowly deforming and reforming into a black, ethereal wraith, placed its hand on the blood of her children. "STOP!" Urtha charged towards the spectre but her husband Burk intercepted her. He held her firmly but without soul. Indeed, when Urtha looked into his eyes, she did not see her beloved, but saw only her own reflection. She struggled against her husbands grasp as the creature sapped the life essence of her only two children. As it finished it turned back to her and gave a crooked smile.
And as briefly as it was there, the creature suddenly vanished. When it disappeared, Burk's body collapsed to the floor, leaving Urtha alone in the burning building she had once called home.
Various rumors sprung up about the incident: some say that Urtha's husband was actually a demon and that he caused the lightning strike; others say that Urtha killed her husband out of jealousy (her husband had been seen frequenting the tavern with a recent traveler). Everyone agrees that Urtha was no longer the same person after the incident.
As the rumors about her spread through the town, it became clear that the other villagers no longer welcomed Urtha. She decided to leave her village, never to return. Instead she traveled, seeking out information in search of the mysterious creature that had killed her family, in the meantime selling her talents as a bodyguard and a mercenary to survive.
Over the years she became a fearsome warrior, and yet still she learned little about the creature. Though she did not actively seek vengeance, she nonetheless hoped that her skills might one day allow her to punish the creature. Finally, she found a lead: a group of paladins were seeking adventurers to help them smite a demonic summoner. After hearing the rumors about the kinds of creatures he summoned, Urtha decided to join the paladins for pay. During the fight, the summoner revealed that he knew nothing of the creature other than it sounded like it was not from this world. Another dead end.
Life might have continued as normal for Urtha, except that, as chance had it, just before the summoner's life was taken, he desperately opened a portal in an attempt to escape the clutches of Urtha and the Paladins. Doing her duty, Urtha charged after him, knocking him to the floor. The force of her blow sent her careening into the portal. Before she could respond she was falling into another dimension... A place she could scarcely imagine...
