The Baby Naming Game

Here's the deal: My wife (Mrs. 'Dillo) and I are expecting our first child. We cannot agree on a name for said baby. That's where you guys and gals come in....

We need a boy's name. First and middle. Ideally goes well with an Irish last name. 1 entry per contestant.

(Deadline is mid-April. Probably decide before that, though.)

Guidelines (in no particular order):
  • Pronoucability: Roisin or Chrysanthemum are pretty enough names... now imagine their elementary school teachers trying to read them off a role sheet. It's not so pretty now, is it?
  • Doesn't start with J: I'm basically a Duggar. It must end now.
  • Nicknameability: Include potential nicknames. For example, I like the name Clover, because you could go with "Chloe" or "Love" or even "Lucky". That's three potential nickname branches off the top of my head.
  • Significance: What makes the name special enough for me to give it to my first-born child? For example, Elijah is from the good book, while Fern is from a good book.
  • Uniqueness: Going back to elementary school, what's worse than the teacher not being able to pronounce your name? How about being "The other John", for the entire school year?
  • Works for an adult: Champ is a cute name... until you see it on someone's resume.
  • Mrs. 'Dillo likes it: Mrs. 'Dillo has final veto power over all names. All example names above have been pre-vetoed (or pre-toed, if you will). Her vetoing can be cruel and arbitrary. Be warned.

So, what do you win? I mean, other than having a child named in your honor, obviously: If your name is picked you will get your choice of one of the following FABULOUS PRIZES!
  • PFA draws you a random picture.
  • PFA makes you an animated avatar of something random.
  • Mrs. 'Dillo draws you a random picture.
  • You get to choose an avatar that PFA will keep until the baby's first birthday.
Other prize suggestions will be considered on request

Conditions subject to change without notice (other than this post being edited).

Boy: Quinn or Quinlain - A variant of the name Ceann meaning “intelligent,” Quinn is the most common surname in County Tyrone in Northern Ireland and is increasingly used as a given name. As traditional quartermasters to the O’Neills, the kings of Ulster for over four centuries, Quinns were responsible for arms and provisions in both war and peace. Possible nicknames are Q, Win, or Lane.

Andrew - English form of the Greek name Ανδρεας (Andreas), which was derived from ανδρειος (andreios) "manly, masculine", a derivative of ανηρ (aner) "man". In the New Testament the apostle Andrew, the first disciple to join Jesus, is the brother of Simon Peter. Andrew, being a Greek name, was probably only a nickname or a translation of his real Hebrew name, which is not known.
This name has been common (in various spellings) throughout the Christian world, and it became very popular in the Middle Ages. Saint Andrew is regarded as the patron of Scotland, Russia, Greece and Romania.
If the child wants to assume a more traditional name as an adult, many children choose to use their middle name. Although Andrew was common in the 1960's and 1970's it is much less used today. Possible nicknames are Andy and Drew.

Quinlain Andrew

Girl: Quinn works for a girl too. Who doesn't want their child to be intelligent? As a small child, the nickname Winnie can give her an immediate identification with A. A. Milne's characters and stories that will give her a love of literature and a name that can grow up with her. If she is good at sports, she'll be a natural born Winner. Quinn for the Win or "Quinner" will give her uniqueness. If she stays with Quinn, it's soft and feminine and slightly exotic.

If her middle name is is Elizabeth, the whole world opens for name options with Liz, Lizzie, Ellie, El, Beth, Lisa, Betsy, Abby and "Her Royal Majesty (or Highness), Queen Elizabeth". It is a feminine given name derived from the Greek Ελισάβετ (Elisabet, modern pronunciation Elisávet), which is a form of the Hebrew name Elisheva (אֱלִישֶׁבַע), meaning "My God is an oath" or "My God is abundance".

Quinn Elizabeth

Consider all the variants of each name. I like the originals: "Elisheva" and "Caenn" but those names may give some teachers troubles.

Male: Kenneth "Kenny or Keith or Neith" Leeroy
Significance:

as for Leeroy...

Female: Gemma Jezzebel "Jezzi"
Significance: Gemma's traditionally Irish. And although Jezebel has a bad denotation, I've always liked the nickname Jezzi.

My suggestions are going to probably seem a little stale... but that's what happens when audits and hiring new staff are on the forefront of your mind.

Suggestion: Gerald for male, Geraldine for female.
Gerald(ine) can be "Gerry" for short, and can accomodate a good number of nicknames. "Grrr" seems to be a good one.

Probably not considered "unique", but that's where the balance between unique and readability/pronouncability come into play. Easy to spell, too.

All the best for a safe and smooth delivery!

Eoin has always been one of my favorite names. It is Gaelic, and it sounds beautiful to me. A male name, but I could see it working both ways.

I like the puritan tradition of naming children after virtues:
Verity (who needs a nick name when you're real name is this awesome?)
Mercy (Merc)
Discretion (Disc)

I even found a list.

I've been told I'm not allowed to name any children though... Humiliation Abstinence (last name here) is apparently not an acceptable name for children in the modern era.

First, congratulations!

Some of the contender's for our boy that we did not go with were:

Asa James (my choice)... nickname would have been AJ.
Hayden Jeremiah (the wife's choice).

We eventually settled on Eli Abel... No nickname here, but it is interesting that his first and middle name together is similar to the word "reliable." We really like the Hebrew names. Eli Abel means something akin to "God provides." Eli is our firstborn, so... Yeah.

Doubt this helps much. Baby naming is great! I know you guys will find the perfect name for your son!

Indeed. That's awesome.

I wanted to name our last kid Simeon, but it didn't go over with momma. It's biblical, and I think it sounds cool. He's the dude who blessed and prophesied over Jesus and Mary when she and Joseph took him to be circumcised. It's an awesome scene that has been made into a canticle, so the little dude could have his own awesome choral theme music. If you're into that kind of thing, that is.

Anyways, you could call him "Simi" for short.

Simeon was also the second of the 12 sons of Israel, brother to Joseph the Dreamer. You could also call the child your "Little monkey" because simian is a homonym.
