It proved simple enough to unlock the door, though opening it is something someone else needed to do. Darius was far too busy to hastily duck out of the way of the incoming flail to worry about it any more. "Nope. Orc’s definitely the worst one," he commented, while shifting his stance to properly face the half-orc

Wasting no more time he brought his second hand back to the greatswords hilt and swung the sword in a powerful uppercut at his opponent, who turned out to be just a little bit too far away for the blade to actually connect. Darius grunted in annoyance and glared at the half-orc.

Cursing his luck, Edelbart stepped back and around the frame of the door taking in the whole setting in which Darius, Biongor and Drulia was battling another outcast - this time a much more brutal looking one that the Yargin who fled.

The fish tank caused the back of his

brain to work in circles of math and physics while he took aim. He thought the water was further down and either the tank was very deep or they had some sort of pump to move the water up... that or the water would often get stale... It smelled like the last thing could easily be the case.

The half-orc moved, Darius moved, Drulia moved and Biongor was fuming with magic still. Edelbart had to aim far off to the back of the outlaw to make sure he wouldn’t hit any ally, but that resulted in a wasted shot. The arrow flew a good deal to the right of the half orc and aligned itself with Drulia’s bolt. Edelbart cursed inward before he snatched another arrow from the belt quiver and aimed again.

He could see it on the Ameya's face and her movements. The fight raged inside and undoubtedly the others were in dire straights without his blade. Dashing knew he needed to act. He also knew the best way to take out an enemy is when he back is turned.

Giving up the pretense of stealth, the nimble rogue moves down the rickety stairs, taking care that they can hold his weight before he fully commits to his movement. When he reaches the door, he jostles it, saying a silent prayer to any god that would listen to him that the door was somehow left open.

When the next bolt twangs against the wall, Drulia's face goes stiff. As stiff as the board from whence the bolt hangs, stiff as the body of this Half-Orc will be a moment later. But first she has to fix this. She has to draw the weapon that makes her who she is.

"Bugger all."

Stepping back, she drops the crossbow on the ground. She'll come back for it, but for now? Now behind the warrior who will act as a buffer, she decides that perhaps it's for the best that she draws her weapon while the other duelist is preoccupied. Less performance anxiety. Who is she kidding, there's none.

The blade is a slight sound coming out of the thing scabbard, and a thin thing besides. But its point is sharp and its sheen is clear even in this dismal light.

"I'm tired of this."

BiongorWhen his fiery dart was the only one to actually impact the orc, Biongor had been afraid that the brute might come charging at him. True, he was armored, but the cleric hadn’t ever been in a real fight before. It was proving to be … terrifying. The pace, the bits of wood flying from missed strikes, the tang of blood, sweat and burnt orc flesh now filled the small room, laboring mightily to be experienced alongside the fish stink. The smell of blood immediately brought the dwarf’s mind back to his youth, when such smells were more common. An atavistic shiver went down his spine as his mind flashed back to previous horrors. Fortunately, the orc swung at the most combat oriented one of the group.

This left the dwarf with a bit of a quandary. He’d trained at the temple of Sarenrae certainly, but swinging a scimitar at a wooden post or even in an exercise was far different that raising sharpened metal against another living creature. He was a preacher, gods above damn this sorry world! How did he wind up in this situation? Yet he couldn’t very well turn back from it now, they were so close. Besides, Sarenrae did believe that vile creatures like this giggling mad-orc needed to be cleansed from the world so that it might properly flourish. He’d already cast a spell in anger and hurt the thing, would swinging a scimitar be so different?

Biongor spent a second looking down at the weapon gripped in his hand. Underneath the armored gloves he wore, he could feel how they were holding onto it with a white-knuckled grip. Still, he could not turn his back on his friends and companions now. They needed his help. He saw the warrior swing and miss after turning from opening the door. Drulia had stepped back to retrieve her rapier, her crossbow having proven to be quite ineffective. Another arrow notched itself into the woodwork of the warehouse, missing their enemy. So far this combat was proving more dangerous to materiel than to personnel. Biongor now hoped to join the fray, and raised his scimitar in anger for the first time.

He stepped around the combat, hoping to wind up next to the orc, he couldn’t get into a good flanking position with the trough (which smelled way worse up close). The scimitar arced out towards the orc. The temple’s training showed itself in two ways. First, the attack hit the overextended orc across the arm. But second, having trained in an environment in which he didn’t really want to hurt his sparring partners, Biongor had become used to pulling his strikes. The way you train is the way you fight, and now Biongor’s strike, the only one of the party so far to actually hit the orc, left only a thin red line across the creature’s forearm (hey, he could only reach so high).

Ameya concentrates on the door, blocking out the sounds of the battle raging inside. She hears the scraping of wood on metal; the slivers of light escaping through the cracks in the door shift slightly as the bar holding them shut is removed, followed by a resounding thunk that must be the bar dropping to the floor. She hesitates a moment longer, waiting to see if anyone should come through...but there seems to be no further activity on the other side of the portal.

Gripping her dagger tightly, she shoves the door closest to her with all her might, hoping that none of her allies were standing just on the other side. As it swings freely inwards, coming around to crash against the wall, she steps forward. Just inside the door she sees Darius, Drulia just behind him, and then Biongor, all facing up against a huge orcish-looking brute, standing with his back to the wall and giggling madly. She quickly moves past the trio and comes to stand near Edelbart on the far side of the room. As she passes, she reaches her free hand out towards the orc, squeezing her fingers together as the makes a twisting motion with her wrist.

The scuffle turned into a real melee almost every member of the group poured into the room. Arrows flew, swords slashed through the air and muffled curses - verbal as well as arcane - bounded across the room.

Darius was the first to act, returning the half-orc's blow with one of his own, though much to his chagrin (and the half-orcs wry amusement) the blow went wide and managed to carve little but empty air. At the same time Edelbart cleared the doorway and brought up his bow, managing little more than to add to the room's overall decoration. The arrow slammed into the wall where it remained - a companion to Drulia's bolt from seconds before.

The half-orc let out a chortle. No doubt he thought himself quite the warrior, able as he was to weather the combined attack of several people with little more than scratches to show for it. That was, until Biongor slipped in and whipped his scimitar across the orc's arm. The chortle turned into a growl and the half-orc turned to face the dwarf who had not only cut him, but also was the reason whisps of smoke still wafted upwards from his clothes and hair.

So focused was he on Biongor, that when Ameya burst through the door (barely slipping in without slamming her companions to the side) and gave him the evil eye, he barely registered her as more than a distraction out of the corner of his eye. It was enough for the young witch to him with her curse, but the half-orc returned his gaze to the dwarf before it could fully latch on. Will save succeeded, -2 AC for 1 round onlyIt would not remain as potent as the witch had hoped, but perhaps it would be enough, as already the half-orc seemed to shift about less eagerly than before.

Ripping the flail out of the wall, the half-orc brought it around and hammered it down towards Biongor, paying the dwarf back for some of the pain he had caused. The chained weapon wrapped itself around Biongor's attempt at fending it off, and the head of the weapon struck the dwarf's shoulder Hit (AC 20), 6 damagewith a solid twack that spoke of just how much force had been put into the swing. Everything was just made worse when the half-orc allowed another snorting giggle to escape his mouth before he pulled back on his weapon to free it once more.

To Gavin, this was little more than a dulled sound, that only momentarily increased in volume when Ameya pushed open one of the doors back where he had just come from, and rushed inside with her knife drawn. The rake tried another approach and headed for the smaller door at the end of the stairs leading down. He licked his lips and reached out slowly to grab the handle of the door and gave it a push to open it, only to find that, perhaps somewhat unsurprisingly considering Gavin's luck with doors this evening, this too was locked.

Some more arrows flew through the air, ineffectively burying themselves in the wood and the only one having any real success against the half-orc turned out to be the dwarven priest. Understandably this also earned him the attention of their foe who had more success at landing a hit than the group of intruders.

Part of Darius was quite content in having someone else be on the receiving end of the nasty flail, another was annoyed at being deemed the less dangerous opponent. Then again, if the half-orc’s attention was one someone else, it might be easier to score a hit himself.

Going for an overhead chop this time the noble still couldn’t make good on his intentions. The blade whistled past the half-orc without making contact, leaving Darius to swear viciously. They had to bring the man down. Every moment he kept them busy was one more that their true quarry might use to get away.

It was a great relief to see the frantic girl burst through the door and be among them again. He noticed that she moved her hands and looked very sincere, but he was too busy keeping an eye on the half-orc to really understand if she was working magic.

Biongor had initiated serious combat and put himself in line of Edelbart’s next arrow, so he lowered his bow and choose Inspire Courage = +1 to attack and weapon damage rollsto use the voice that he had been blessed with from birth - a weapon that he had spent a great deal more time on honing than any other blade, war hammer or piercing projectile he had ever owned.

Cretin! You was warned. Fool! you saw how your companion withdrew in panic. Yet you stand to answer for his cowardice. Edelbart waved his hand around in a broad gesture, the arrow still nimbly held between two fingers, ready to knock and fire. This is the very essence of valiance. This is heroism. This is deadly, unwavering, competence. This is fate. Your fate, you ignorant dolt. It would have sounded good to shout out their names, but Edelbart refrained from it, as prudence got the better of him and the real names was not wise to have shouted out in the night air of the docks. Who knew who was listening?

A curse escapes the rogue's lips as his quick push on the door proves it is locked. [i]Is anything ever going to go my way?[/say] he asks himself, cursing the long bout of bad luck he had been having.

But he knows there this was no time for a pity party, he needed to get to the others. They would need someone competent with a sword and he highly doubted that any of them met that description.

Not bothering to hide his movements, Dashing races towards the others, pushing past the girl as he makes his way into the room. There he sees the form of the bloodied brute fighting off Dashing's obviously inferior fighting force.

"Want a piece of me? Bring it on, unless you are afraid..." he growls, waiting for the stooge to make a move towards him.

BiongorPAIN!

Pain lanced through the dwarf’s body at the site of the impact of the flail head. A cruel crunching bore witness to bones cracked under the force of the blow and the metal armor clanked in mockery of the protection it was supposed to provide. The dwarf’s vision was briefly taken over by a flash of yellow, red, white, and some other colors that defied easy identification. The edges of Biongor’s vision crept in from the sides, narrowing down to a tunnel before he recovered. Ragged breaths were sucked through his beard, which suddenly seemed to be suffocating him. Biongor was no real stranger to pain, the scars underneath his armor bore witness to plenty. But he’d had years of relative comfort at the temples, and this kind of abrupt trauma was never part of training.

Still, he couldn’t exactly go back. His companions were being singularly ineffective. The two men were just shouting at the orc, the third had yet to connect with his damned big sword. Hell, the way he was swinging the thing, perhaps Darius was really lucky he hadn’t hit any of his companions. Usless. The girl, Ameya, meanwhile had cast some spell and while Drulia had drawn her sword, she hadn’t stepped up to use it.

But he couldn’t take another hit like that. He couldn’t exactly turn around, that would lead to a flail in the back for sure. Perhaps he could cover a retreat of some kind, maybe open up space for Drulia to step forward and take the orc’s ire off of him. How did a priest wind up the only effective combatant anyway? Fortunately, his capability now deserted him (maybe it had something to do with a halfway-to-broken arm). Maybe it would leave the orc to leave him alone. He waved the scimitar ineffectively in front of him as he took a few shuffling steps back. Let someone else deal with the brute.

Please. Goddess, don’t let the orc follow me.

Drulia brings the fire to the Half-Orc.

Moving around the furred warrior, she bears the blade in front of her blade, a duelist pose as she all but crab walks around him in a pirouette, coming into place. "Stand and deliver, you slime, and get out of our way." The blade begins to glow, making her blue-brown ensemble of armor and clothes shine an almost silver color as the orange grows more brilliant.

She strikes in an instant, bringing the blade down on the shoulder of the bastard, a deep cut that goes past muscle to bone. The flames lap around it, illuminating the attack and cauterizing the wound.

She pulls the blade out. "Any questions?"

Drulia could not have asked for a more impressive reveal of her duelist prowess... but where is the other duelist?

Dwarf blood was spilled, but that was the last thing the half-orc ever did. Between blades and harsh words, Gaelan Lamm's thug was pushed back and struggling to keep his footing. He swerved to avoid Darius' blade, dodged Biongor's feeble riposte and flicked a rude gesture at Edelbart and Gavin's attempt to unnerve him with hard truths and heavy insults. And then he was done.

Snickering, the half-orc backed up until his back hit the corner of the tank. Surprised he cast a glance down behind him to see what had stopped him, and that was when Dru made her move.

right-aligned image
She had slinked in between the others, her slender frame going unnoticed until she pushed the blade forward. Dru's training at the academy had thought her to focus her arcane powers to a point, and now she used the rapier to drive that point home. Flames licked up along the length of the blade as the tip bypassed the thug's armor and penetrated flesh and muscle. Blood sizzled and a fragrance, not unlike a street vendor's grilled meat, started to mix with the ever-present stench of fish and what was worse.

The half-orc's eyes widened and he stared down at the thin blade protruding from his chest. Then he opened his mouth.

"Heh!" he chortled - one last laugh at a joke with a very poor punchline. Then he slid off the blade, now quenched in his blood, and collapsed.

And like that the six was once more alone, and the old fishery fell silent again but for the sound of something rattling further in.

She was surprised it actually happened.

It had happened only once before, in a flurry of emotion. Once while dueling with her cousin, not long before her acceptance to the Acadamae, when he had beaten her a few times in a row and rubbed it in her face. She parried, parried, then thrusted, and when she did, she was lucky he was out of the way. Her uncle had seen it, too, and some members of her mother's family, her cousin's own siblings and mother. They had seen it and reported it as gossip, which made its way through Korvosa until the big wigs at the Acadamae deemed her worthy of their attention. It was how she had gotten into the Acadamae, and now, here again, she was pulling it out of nowhere. She doubted she could pull it off again.

The blade pulled out, the man at her feet bleeding out, she sighed, and kept the blade out.

Her first kill. She thought almost nothing of it, and she didn't look back. The man was a threat to her companions, and her overall goals. If only the duelist—Oh, there he is. She hadn't seen him come in. With everyone arrived now, she sighed, not wanting to make more of it.

"Onward?" She would go forward, if no one else would take point. She had made her point, certainly, so taking point would likewise be easy for her.

Dashing's jaw drops as Drulia slips her flaming blade into the half-orc's belly. He was even more surprised when the uncaring warrior smirked over the half-orc light began to fade from his eyes.

"Are you nuts!" Dashing says as he drops his weapons and quickly moves to the side of the half orc. He was far from an expert at treating wounds, but knew if he didn't at least try to do something, the half-orc would die. And Dashing knew if he died, he would be complicit in a murder.

His hands move quickly, tearing a piece of fabric from the half-orc's own tunic, trying to tie a piece of fabric around the wound, But despite his ministrations, the blood continued to flow.

"Somebody help me! If we can't save him, he'll die. And do you know what the penalty for murder is?" he asks, trying to motivate the others.

"And if he dies, we'll be no way of getting information and will be no closer to finding Lamm than we were before." he growls, shocked at the stupidity of his new found companions.
