Starting out as an apprentice mage, he despised the first law of thermodynamics with a vengeance. Why should the universe be condemned to a slow descent into oblivion? of course most wizards could already disregard this axiom of reality, but never with sufficient oomph to cause a difference. bravo, with a single fireball you created about 4.220281e+12 joules of energy, or should I say 47 micro grams... MICRO I TELL YOU!!! of course you can just draw energy and matter from the elemental planes (im looking at you, decanter of endless water) you still aren't creating anything. theoretically, you could use the elemental signatures as a "template" to actually create stuff with, but there has to be a better way...
along his travels to answer these questions, he saw a world with a limit to its resources. he saw people starve from lack of food, countries at war to gain resources, fields turned to desert in drought. He tried to find any possible way to make this world a bit better, studying economics, science and magic to reach his goals. This bolstered his resolve to find out how to truly create, even if he had to go to the end of the planes.
A slip down the infinite staircase later and that's what he did. the first thing he saw upon waking up was the giant floating mask
