Jol de Corbie
Race: Human Class: Cleric Age: 30 Alignment: LG Character Sheet : https://www.rpgcrossing.com/profiler/view.php?id=76126 Appearance: Jol is slightly overweight but otherwise of healthy appearance. With streaks of grey in his hair and beard, at first glance he appears older than his thirty years. Clad in the plain grey tunic and scapular of the Grey Friars and with the cross of Orion suspended around his neck, there is no mistaking his vocation as a Franciscan. One affectation that marks him out from the usual wandering friars is the faded red scarf wound tightly around his neck. He carries no weapons save a long staff. Background: A centre of learning and knowledge in the Western World that rivals both the famed Library of Alexandria and the Museum of Antiquities in Massilia, the Abbaye de Corbie in Normandy is one of the few remaining peaceful retreats from the war raging throughout the continent. As such, there was much consternation when a caravan arrived unannounced in the dead of a moonless night, its sole passenger hurried in under a cloak and rushed straight to the turret room of one of the abbey's towers by none other than the Abbot himself. This in itself would have been enough to set the monks whispering, but with the serenity of the abbey then regularly pierced over the following nights by the newcomer's anguished screams of despair and grief, the topic of who this strange arrival might be was never far from the murmured conversations of the friars (for while the cloisters at Corbie were always calm and serene, it could not be said that any soul at the abbey had ever taken a vow of silence - save one, perhaps, but even then there had been some debate on whether it was that she would not talk, or that she could not). But the friars were dedicated first and foremost to their duties. So there was little disruption when some weeks after the terrible screams had finally ceased at night, a new monk emerged from the tower, was introduced as Brother Jol by the Abbot, and joined the monks in their prayers and their work. They simply welcomed him and accepted him into their lives, as was their way. And very quickly Brother Jol became just another of the brethren, settling in to abbey life surprisingly quickly. That was two years ago, and the man who tends the gardens and apiary of the Abbey now is a far cry from the broken, tormented soul who arrived on that dark night. Jovial and hard-working, he shows no outward signs of whatever demons he brought with him. Life in the abbey has exorcised them - or at least, quelled them. Jol is a friar at the Abbaye de Corbie in Normandy. He is a dedicated monk who is well liked in the abbey. He is larger than most - indeed, slightly overweight - which is perhaps not surprising; he is a man who likes his food and has found his home in the abbey's kitchen. Much of his time is spent preparing and cooking the brethren's meals, as well as tending to the abbey's vegetable gardens and apiary. When it is necessary to give his full name, he simply introduces himself as Jol de Corbie. He wears the robes of the friars, but with one affectation - he is always to be seen with a faded red scarf tied around his neck. It is a keepsake from an old friend, he says, and some surmise this is perhaps a girl he knew before he took his vows. The scarf was indeed a present from an old friend, but it also serves another purpose. For when Jol sleeps at night and removes his scarf, the truth is exposed - vivid scars on his neck reveal that this is a man who once had been hanged.
