Iados Open
right-aligned image

Name: Iados Open
Race: Tiefling
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Class: Druid
Background: Outlander
Personality Traits: I feel far more comfortable around animals than people
Ideal: Life is like the seasons, in constant change. And we must change with it.
Bond: An injury to the wilderness is an injury to me
Flaw: I am slow to trust members of other races, especially city folk.

The first thing anyone ever notices about Iados is, like most tieflings, his tail and horns. His horns are a dark, mottled mix of ochre and black, that curl from his forehead backwards and around to in front of his ears.

Meanwhile his tail is maroon like the rest of his skin, with a slight fork at the end, and almost four feet long. Iados doesn’t have any facial hair and has two small growths on his chin, almost horn like but barely a centimetre long.

His eyes are a pale silver that seemingly gleam at night and are a stark contrast to the rest of his appearance. However his hair is dark, shoulder length and normally kept tied back behind his neck.

Slightly built, Iados reaches just over 5’10” but is wiry and a lifetime of living in the wild has kept him physically healthy and fit. He is narrow shouldered and thin at the waist but still carries himself with some confidence.

Iados was born in the forests northwest of Amphail and was raised there by his mother. He never knew his father and instead grew up with his mother. His family for generations had shunned the wider world of civilisation, their infernal heritage casting constant shadows on them. Rather than submit to a life of judgement, disparity and possibly crime Iados ancestors chose to live in the wild, away from others and their preconceptions.

Instead they built a life in nature, the natural world accepting their spirits as part of the world. Iados and his mother lived as close to harmoniously with the woods as possible, giving back what they took and only taking what was needed. Meveen, Iados’ mother taught him about how to live in the wilds, what to eat, how to hunt, how to cultivate and how to live at peace.

Iados grew to be wary of outside civilisation. The distrust that he encountered when dealing with trappers, hunters and gatherers throughout the forest gave him a poor impression of the wider world. His mother would take him to Amphail every six months, entreating with the people there, teaching them about how to live in harmony with the woods and lands on their borders, but their reluctance to understand, Iados saw as simply obstinance. And when the people of Amphail took too much of the lands around them, Iados was happy to venture out with his mother in an attempt to scare or frighten too bold peoples.

Instead the only other people Iados accepted were the few other druids he and his mother dealt with though they were few and far between. Rather Iados grew to be comfortable around beasts of the forest. Wolves, bears, eagles and even the occasional panther. Iados was also introduced to elementals by his mother, who taught him like most of nature they were both dangerous and beautiful.

As Iados reached adulthood his mother fashioned him a staff from the willow tree in which they had made their home. The staff was a wonder to Iados, the dark willow wood, shaped into the image of a beak at the top was wondrous to him and he carried it with him always.

Barely into his twenties, Iados’ mother set him a task. To truly appreciate nature she believed he must see how the outside world lived without it. She tasked him with travelling to Waterdeep and Baldurs Gate, two of the largest cities in the world. She felt it would enlighten Iados and give him insight into the minds of those who lived separate from the world. She also hoped he might teach some of those he encountered about how to live closer to the natural world.

Iados was reluctant to go but eventually acquiesced and gathered his few belongings and set out.

Aubron Wranlana
left-aligned image
Name: Aubron Wranlana
Race: High Elf
Alignment: Neutral Good
Patron Deity: Solonor Thelandira
Class: Ranger
Background: Hermit
Personality Traits: I am utterly serene, even in the face of disaster.
I connect everything that happens to me to a grand, cosmic plan.
Ideal: Self-Knowledge. If you know yourself, there’s nothing left to know.
Bond: I’m still seeking the enlightenment I pursued in my seclusion, and it still eludes me.
Flaw: I’d risk too much to uncover a lost bit of knowledge.
Appearance: Aubron is a medium sized elf with green eyes and fair skin. His hair is light brown, though you wouldn't know it as he is constantly has the cowl of his cloak over his head. He is fast and nimble, and his movements are graceful.
Personality: Aubron likes to stick to himself, preferring to be unseen than seen. His time in the forest was one of solitude and this realm of man and beast is new to him. He cautiously moves around settlements always on alert for something. He is soft spoken, yet when he speaks, his words are wise. He is driven by honoring his diety, Solonor, god of the hunt. He will not do anything which would be seen as a detriment to his god because Aubron hopes to lives as Solonor has.
History: Aubron was born in Silverymoon in North Faerun to Renna Herberos and Jharak Wranlana. His father, Jharak, was a member of the Knights in Silver sworn to protect the city and the Silver Marches. He fell in the great War of the Silver Marches during the defense of Sundabar when it was assaulted by the treants and orcs from Hellgate Keep.

Aubron’s mother, Renna, was a priestess of Solonor Thelandira serving at the temple in Silverymoon. She was very devout and while the great war went on, she mostly raised Aubron in the ways of the hunt. An established markswoman, Renna taught Aubron to use a bow, listen to and feel the forest, and hide within it’s protection

Though, Aubron longed to be with his father fighting alongside his kind for the sake of all elves. One night, he slipped out of their family home to follow a battalion of the Knights in Silver marching east towards Sundabar. After a fortnight, he arrived at the walled city and attempted to find his father. But that night, he was too late. The assault on the city began as orcs, treants, and dragons attacked. The battle raged on, and all the forces of good rallied protecting the four gates into the city. But, the Rivergate was the first to fall, and that is where Jharak was stationed. As the orcs streamed across the moat, Aubron watched his father be torn limb from limb as a Moutain orc descended upon him.

Aubron was horrified at the sight. He hid against the wall as the city was quickly overrun. Finding his way out, he ran away and was lost in The High Forest. He started a new life amongst the wilds of the forest. A place where unspeakable things lurked – orcs, gnolls, treants, liches, and dragons. He took his learning form Renna and refined the ways of the hunt from stalking his prey to killing it with deadly precision.

During his time in seclusion, he pondered the ways of Solonor. More and more he saw Solonor’s influence in his life and the forest itself as each passing day went on. He established ongoing rituals to honor the deity, and for his effort he was rewarded. At times, the forest speaks to Aubron. It tells him where to hunt, when danger is near, and when bad weather is imminent.

Aubron, though has become restless. His time in the forest has shown him what is possible in the hunt, but he must put his skills to use and preserve the forest from invaders who would otherwise tear it down. He must follow Solonor’s guidance on being the hands and feet in Faerun to protect nature. In doing so, he will hope to learn more of the nature of the god and become more like him. So that one day, Aubron will take his place of honor among the branches of the Pale Tree.
Roleplay Example: Seeking Passage

Here's my post from the old old character thread, which contained our original apps plus links to the sheets:

left-aligned image

Name: Renata Tyrfille

Race: Human

Class: Paladin

Background: Acolyte

Personality Traits:
I am prone to melodramatic expression, positive and negative.
I am intolerant of other religions.

Ideal: Justice. Innocents will survive and the evildoers will suffer, by any means necessary.

Bond: I will defend children at all costs.

Flaw: My hatred of my enemies is blind and unreasoning.

HistoryPretty, simple, and sweet, Renata Nourie was beloved by everyone in town. She returned their kindness, but her full love went only to the children of the orphanage she tended under temple supervision.

Then the orcs came and took her love away. Renata woke to the screaming, but it was already over by the time she traversed the hall and opened the door to the bunk room. When she did, a red haze came over her eyes and something within her broke forever.

Unconscious of her actions, Renata surprised the nearest orc, disarmed him, and split his head with his own axe. She cleaved the sword arm of the second orc, but before she could turn from him, the last invader in the room ran her through from behind.

After the watch drove off the remaining orcs, Renata’s body was collected with the others. But as two men removed her corpse from the cart, she gasped, awake, and they gasped with her. Renata’s fatal wound had somehow closed, and she felt an almost superhuman vigor. Renata felt something else, too: the certain knowledge that the great god of justice had honored her sacrifice and had resurrected her as his agent.

Renata had no more place in her hometown. Even if they could accept her unnatural revivification, they could not adjust to her new demeanor. Renata took a new surname to honor Tyr, and left to do his work. After a few years of training with paladins of Tyr, Renata Tyrfille set out to find and protect those in need, and to bring a terrible justice to the wicked.

Appearance & PersonalityAppearance:
Those who knew Renata “before” swear that she’s taller now. She certainly cuts an imposing figure for a woman, approaching six feet and 200 pounds. She isn’t quick, but she’s not entirely graceless either.

Renata wields a strong, direct gaze that carries the full weight of her attention, captivating friends during conversation and pinning enemies during threats or interrogation. Her voice is round and full, trumpeting when she projects it, and thrumming when she is more relaxed.

Renata Tyrfille, holy warrior, presents very differently than did Renata Nourie, nursemaid. Where the latter was lovely, sweet, and charming, the new woman is commanding, captivating, and sometimes terrifying. Renata does not abuse her personal power, and may be unaware of it.

Unfortunately, most of her cheerfulness has left her, and she takes everything very seriously. Before battle, she is likely to remind her comrades of the heroic glory of their imminent deaths, and when at rest she often dwells upon the world’s myriad injustices or reminisces about some particularly horrible evil she has witnessed. She’s the last person you would want at a party.

Here are some examples with slightly similar characters:

Urdo, very strong and very dumb
Varvara of the two swords and heavy accent

I’d like to play Renata like those characters, somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but I don’t try to turn games into comedies and I like to play strategically and tactically smart; I’d just be making fun of the character a bit.

Gareth Blackcroft
left-aligned image

Name: Gareth Blackcroft
Race: Human
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Class: Thief
Background: Criminal

Personality Traits: Gareth is very slow to trust. He is a terrible judge of character, and so he assumes the worst of everyone. To Gareth, those who seem the fairest have the most to hide.

Ideal: Although he is slow to trust, and even slower to make friends, Gareth is loyal to those he considers friends, almost to a fault. Everyone else can take a ride down the Styx, for all he cares. But even Gareth’s sense of loyalty has its limits…

Bond: Deep down, Gareth struggles with the apparent betrayal he has faced at the hands of the Grandmaster. His dreams of riches and power have been stolen from him, and he will do anything to reclaim those dreams.

Flaw: Gareth’s deepest flaw is rooted in what is probably his best quality. He has become so obsessed with revenge that, when faced with a choice between power or revenge and my friends, he usually chooses the former.

Gareth is a tall and slim young human male, and could almost be described as lanky, we're it not for his exceptional coordination.

He habitually keeps his sandy blonde hair short, no more than a few inches long at most, and his green eyes add a bit of distinction to a his rather plain face. He is not ugly, but no one would describe his features as memorable either.

The young man typically dresses in dark greys, blues, and blacks, and wears a pair of fine leather gloves at all times.

Gareth is a rogue in every sense of the word, sharp-witted, but with few scruples. The youngest of eight children, Gareth quickly learned that he had to fend for himself, seeking out opportunities rather than depending on the good will of others. He is comfortable working on his own, or with others, but he is always looking for the next opportunity. Fortune favors the bold.

He is slow to make friends, and can quickly become frustrated with people who disagree with him, but those that he counts among his friends know they can rely upon him....usually.

Gareth is more than happy to string people along, though, and those he does not know or respect are just a means to an end, useful, but.... expendable. By that token, though, Gareth almost always assumes that everyone else is playing the long con as well, leading to his innate distrust of strangers.

Tarton Wetfeet
right-aligned image
Character name: Tarton Wetfeet
Race/age/gender: Halfling (Lightfooot)/29/Male
Class: Wizard (Divination)
Background: Will take Entertainer if the custom background is a no-goI propose a custom background - The Traveling Troubadour
You spent some time with a traveling troupe of entertainers, splitting time working in a booth, grifting folks out of their money with cheap games and "chance" where the odds were stacked against them to begin with and providing entertainment between the main sets. Usually on stage with some spoken word comedy or a comedic musical performance.
Skill Proficiencies: Deception and Sleight of Hand.
Two Tool Proficiencies: Playing cards and dice.
Background Feature: From Entertainer Background in PHBBy Popular Demand
You can always find a place to perform, usually in an inn or tavern but possibly with a circus, at a theater, or even in a noble's court. At such a place, you receive free lodging and food of a modest or comfortable standard (depending on the quality of the establishment), as long as you perform each night. In addition, your performance makes you something of a local figure. When strangers recognize you in a town where you have performed, they typically take a liking to you.
Personality Traits: Nobody stays angry at or around me for long since I an defuse any amount of tension.
Whenever I come to a new place I collect rumours and spread gossip
Ideal: I'm determined to make something of myself.
Bond: I owe everthing to my mentor - a horrible person who's probably rotting in a jail somewhere.
Flaw: I'm always in debt, I spend my earnings faster than I can get them on decadent luxuries faster than I can bring them in.
Appearance: A short, slight halfling with brown hair and eyes, Tarton always has a smile on his face and it is normally infectious. He is about average size for a halfling, and there's almost always a twinkle in his eye - it's never clear if that twinkle is a zest for life or the beginnings of another scam.
Brief backstory: Tarton had spent most of his formative years with a traveling troupe of performers and rogues where he learned the arts of cheating at dice and "fortune telling." The troupe could typically trick folks into believing that he was a child diviner, and he'd read fortunes while the main acts were happening - he had no actual divining skills or powers, but did a decent enough job of giving vague fortunes and reading people that they rarely got run out of town. . No one ever expected the childlike fellow to cheat them at high card draw either, but it wasn't that often that he didn't make money in the card booth. But he'd had a falling out with the leader as he got older and it was harder to convince folks that he wasn't a child. After one loud shouting match, he was simply left behind in a town that he didn't even know the name of.

He managed to convince a traveling wizard in an inn that he was worth bringing along and so he began studying his new career. Long days on the road and pestering from Tarton lead to him beginning his study of magic. Just as he was beginning to harness some arcane power, his master sent him off to "discover a new spell, or some artifact, and bring it back to me to continue your studies." Tarton was fairly sure that the man had had enough badgering, but it didn't matter to him, and so off he went, boarding a ship to find his next adventure.
Personality: Tarton is a very likeable person. He can converse with intellectuals, he can skulk with rogues, he can listen to hero's tales and recite them later, sometimes inserting himself into the stories, sometimes not. He is seldom in a foul mood, ever the optimist, at least outwardly. He believes that he can solve most any problem put before him, more so now that he has harnessed the power of magic. He's not power hungry, much more power curious. What are the limits of the power he can control? Can he even find those limits?

He's a smooth talker, a good conversationalist, always working to put his audience at ease - that's when its easiest to separate people from their money after all. He will wink at the barmaid, slap his knee at the drunken man's jokes and generally do his best to make sure no one feels uncomfortable. He does have flaws - he will almost always take the path that leads to him obtaining a heavier purse. Having been on the road with the troubadours for so long, he is always looking for the next pay day. He has no qualms about swindling just about anyone, save for perhaps the destitute. No one would call him charitable, and perhaps only the rich would call him a scoundrel. He's got the robbing the rich part figured out, giving to the poor is another matter.

He likes to take advantage of luxuries when he can. If there's a nicer room at the inn, he'll try to bargain his way into it. If he can't bargain his way in, he'll pay for it. He'll often offer to perform for food and lodging and end up using whatever money he makes during the performance for a better room. He has no problem sleeping under a cart in the woods, but when the luxuries are available, Tarton will indulge. He very much dislikes snakes. Very very much.

Above all else though, Tarton wants to be someone. He doesn't want to just be some faceless performer in a troupe that is here today and gone tomorrow. He wants people to speak his name, sing of his deeds (whatever they may be) and for people now to tell their grandchildren of him.

Name: Ogda
Race: Human (Variant)
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Patron Deity: Spirit Ancestors
Class: Ranger of the Swarm
Background:Folk Hero (of Barovia)
Personality Traits: I am constantly conferring with my ancestors.
I connect everything that happens to me to a grand, cosmic plan.
Ideal: We use the lessons of the past to create a better future.
Bond: I'm dedicated to destroying Strahd, and the undead in general.
Flaw: I am opinionated to a fault. When people disagree, I turn quiet and sullen.
Appearance: Ogda is a pretty Raven Clan woman of her late twenties who is very fit and lithe. She wears hand made clothing, and has a number of totems dedicated to her swarm of birds. The birds, while spirits of her ancestors, look like actual birds of all types. They are of assorted sizes, hues, and shapes.

Personality: Ogda is a happy and simple person. She sees things in a very black and white manner. When folk disagree with her she tends to shut down and keep to her spirit birds. While tribal in origin, Ogda has become more worldly with her previous adventuring group. Her facial scar was received when her traveling companion (a paladin)was dominated by a wizard and cut her very badly. When he nursed her back to health and healed her, Ogda found she had strong emotions for the man and started a relationship with him. His demise here in Barovia and her time as a statue has only begun to affect her character.

History: A mystery, for now. She is from the Spine of the World and the Raven Clan of the Uthgardt.
