This horse is already proving its mettle, thinks Critias to himself as he concentrates on his fight with the half-ogre. And just as well, as there seem to be many more foes that he thought they would be contending with. The Sea Griffons can use all the help they can get, even with their veteran archers calmly dispatching all foes they can see. And if Critias can bring down the half-ogre, that will be another blow to their morale.

He roars encouragement to the Sea Griffons, adding his voice to Josina's. Deciding that force is better than finesse with this opponent, he rains down two heavy blows on the half-ogre.

Critias turns, slashing down with his sword, hears a sharp clang of steel on steel and feels a tremble up his arm when the Half-ogre blocks the blow with his axe and shoves upwards almost knocking Critias and the horse over As Critias recovers, his foe follows up his advantage and slashes Critias across the hip, but misses chopping off his thigh, which is more than likely what would have happened. The beast man was strong, as strong as a full grown ogre if not more and he fought with more cunning. Critias righted himself in the saddle and slashed again, badly missing as he almost lost the grip on his blade. He recovers quickly and turns the horse, avoiding his foes sweeping axe. Only this time, the half-ogre tried to chop into his horse' neck. Two of the gnolls lie dead, one with Druce's arrow sticking from it's skull. A few of The Sea Griffons, Eghert, Gisulf, Fenken, and Domis have engaged the other three gnolls in a wild disorganized melee.
Off to the right, Critias can see Bursi rallying the others and forming a horseshoe like formation as more orcs and gnolls charge out of the forest. For the time, the Sea Griffons hold their own, particularly with Arwell and Druce's deadly firing and Calina, standing with them using her sling.

OOC-Critias took fifteen points of damage that round and missed with both of his attacks

It has been a long time since Critias fought from horseback, and it's showing. Combined with the fact that the half-ogre is a more able foe than he gave it credit for, now all he has to show for trying to end this fight quickly is another bruise on his hip. It could have been worse, but it still could be - this fight is far from over. Angry with himself, but concentrating on the fight again, he sees the the half-ogre still focussed on attacking his horse. He takes advantage of his opponent's momentary distraction and viciously slashes Breac an Fuethas down at its neck, then follows through somewhat wildly with another backswing.

Critias' rides back at his foe, anger charging his strength, filling him with urgency and need. He sweeps by his foe, chopping down, feeling his blade cut through the neck and down into the muscle of the chest. He has to yank hard to pull his weapon free. He momentarily loses his balance and misses badly on his back swing.
It doesn't seem to matter. His foes attempt to disembowel his horse failed as the horse nimbly hopped away. Then the beast man sagged back from Critias' blow. The deep wound bled profusely, but more importantly it seemed to deprive his foe of strength. The half-ogre's second attack was a meager thing, it looked like it barely had the strength to lift the Danish Axe. As Critias whirled his horse around, the half-ogre's right hand barely grasped the axe, while his left was pulling a short sword, readying it for Critias' next attack. All around them, the fight swirled, gnolls and Sea Griffons battering, slashing and swearing at one another.
Just aways off, Critias could see the Sea Griffons horseshoe becoming more of a circle as more and more orcs attack from the forest. Critias would guess there are at least a fifty of them now and more coming. So far Druce and Arwell and Calina had not been attacked. Those three stood off from the the rest, calmly firing and killing. Those three are the only reason the rest of the Sea Griffons have not yet been overrun.

Coming to the forest is beginning to look like it wasn't such a good idea now, but that's the luck of the draw. Could have been equally bad wherever they went, and staying in the village certainly wasn't an option, with an army of twelve thousand bearing down on it. So here is where they are, and this fight needs to be over soon. But damn, this half-ogre is one tough bastard. Critias has never seen anyone take a blow to the neck like that and still stand. He's seen houses with less resilience.

The Griffons are looking hard pressed now, but if he can just finish the job here, he knows that the tide of the battle can be turned.

He slashes Breac an Fuethas down again at the half-ogre, wondering what it's going to take to finally dispatch this creature. Beast or not, you've got to have respect for an opponent that can take a beating like this and still be holding up his sword, he grudgingly admits to himself.

Dice First Attack,Damage:
1d20+17 (7)+17 Total = 24
1d10+9 (2)+9 Total = 11

Dice Second Attack,Damage:

Critias wheels his horse around to find his opponent waiting for him. The half-ogre stands ready, holding his axe high with trembling arms. Critias can see blood spurting from his neck, can also see the determination in the thing's eyes. The half-ogre is going to die fighting. Critias can see him moving his blood speckled lips in some kind of prayer or song, waiting for the death he knows Critias is bringing, waiting and wanting it. Critias has not seen this since Nijmegin, where he watched both Damal and Grunhild, the Valkrior whispering in the same manner as they went to their deaths.
Crit brushes those memories aside and rides into his opponent. The half-ogre swings the great danish axe with accuracy, but little force. Critias parries the slow moving blow and deftly chops into the half-ogre's head. Crit's blade drives halfway into the skull and upper jaw. The monster's hands stab a dagger at the horse's belly, but like the axe blow, their is no strength behind it. Crit's second swing misses as the half-ogre drops to his knees, then falls back onto his heels, sitting, staring up at the sky with sightless eyes.
Crit has no foes near him. He can see Father Barnet and Josina have rallied the Sea Griffons. Father Barnet swinging his heavy mace and Josina...she fights with spear and sword, stabbing and slashing like a mad thing. Bursi is next to her, stabbing and shield bashing orcs, allowing the younger Sea Griffons protection while killing those orcs.
Off to his left, and away from the other Sea Griffons, Eghert, Gisulf, Fenken, and Domis fight back to back against ten gnolls, who are almost casually attacking them, almost playing with them as they stab with long spears and quickly step back. The four men are holding up, but tiring.
Arwell and Druce and Calina continue to shoot and sling at the orcs and half-orcs fighting the main group of Sea Griffons. Strangely enough, the orcs and gnolls have not mounted an attack against them. Critias also realizes he has not seen Sperle or Roosje since the attack started.

With the half-ogre finally down, Critias takes a second to take stock of the battle, also glancing around briefly to see if he can locate Roosje or Sperle. At least for now, Father Barnet and Josina look like they have things under control, especially as they have the seasoned Bursi with them, but Eghert and his companions look hard pressed. All four are handy enough with their weapons, but with ten against four Critias decides they need the odds evening. Wasting no further time, he attacks the gnolls, laying mighty blows into them with Breac an Fuethas as he rides through them.

Crit spies Sperle and Roosje, together in a tree about fifty feet up. Sperle is motioning to him and raising his fingers, indicating numbers and kinds of foes. Sperle is sitting on a branch, drinking from the wineskin and eating....
Sperle lets Critias know he counts 153 orcs, 52 gnolls, 11 ogres and 5 small something else. Crit doesn't know the hand sign for whatever Sperle is signaling. It then dawns on Critias, all these humanoids came running from the army, they are looking to hide, in the forest, just like the Sea Griffons, and now they are all fighting for the same hiding space and ruining that hiding place in the process of fighting over it.
Crit grits his teeth and rides into the swarming gnolls, slashing and stabbing and trampling. Riding up, Crit cleaves cleanly through the head of the first gnoll and into the neck of the gnoll standing next to him, killing them both. Critias feels the first 'ping' of an arrow glancing off his helm, quickly followed by another breaking against his shoulder. Emboldened by his success and pissed at the orcs shooting at him, Crit takes it out on the gnolls, chopping off the head of one and stabbing his blade through the chest of another with so furious a blow his blade drives into the gnoll next to him, killing them both. While Crit stabs and slashes, his horse whirls, kicking and shouldering gnolls, scattering them as one dies from a broken skull and two fall over from the blows.
Crit is about to trample one of the fallen gnolls when he sees a small ogrish like creature with a crossbow, aimed at him. The creature fires even as Critias lifts his shield to cover himself. The bolt hits close to the center of the shield and sends a numbing sensation up Critias' arm. Crit remembers fighting and killing a few of these in the sewers of Nijmegen. He was told they were a kind of giant, smarter and cleaner than ogres, but not as strong or cunning as Frost Giants. They are called Verbeegs, if he remembers correctly.

It is not until he has finished cutting a bloody swathe through the gnolls that had been tormenting Eghert and his companions that it sinks in for Critias that this is not a battle they can win. Twenty five Sea Griffons against two hundred foes is long odds indeed, even if so far the Griffons have more than accounted for themselves. But soon enough they will start to take casualties, and in any case this is not a battle they want to still be fighting when the army finally arrives.

"Fall back to the main group" he orders Eghert. "There's too many of them in there. We need to try something else."

I am not sure if Combat Expertise is usable here, given that while Critias is in a melee he's not actually attacking anyone, but if it is applicable then he'll take the full +5 to AC to give a total of AC 41Keeping an eye on the Verbeeg, he wheels the horse around back to rejoin the main group of Griffons.

"Bursi!" he calls out to the half-orc. "We need to end this fight! Translate what I say into orcish!"

Waving his sword overhead, he bellows at the combatants,

"Stop! Stop fighting and hear me! You know what is coming! If we are still here when that army arrives, we are all dead! There is room in the forest for all of us! Stop the battle now, let us take cover in another part of the forest, and we can all survive this!"

In truth, if the army does turn up while they are still fighting, Critias figures there is half a chance the Sea Griffons might talk their way out of trouble. Although that too is a long shot. But that won't be the case for the orcs and gnolls - they are all dead for sure. Critias is counting on the fact that they realise that, and as they are already hiding in the forest, he figures they do. Faced with guaranteed slaughter at the hands of the army, he's hoping they will decide to retreat, at least until it has passed. If not, well the Griffons will just have to finish the ones out here and hope for the best.

[ooc: so the plan - such as it is - is to have the Griffons form up and perform a controlled retreat, moving away from this area to try to find a part of the forest that isn't overrun with orcs. Preferably a part that puts the orcs and gnolls between the Griffons and the oncoming army, should the army decide to send troops into the forest. Will worry what to do about being sat under the same set of trees as two hundred orcs afterwards ]

Critias whirls the horse around, staring at the Verbeeg for but a moment, before turning about and shouting orders. Crit sees Eghert, staring at him open mouthed and breathing heavy. Fenken and Domis stand beside Eghert, bent over and wheezing as well. Only Gisulf looks up at him, the man's face stained with sweat and blood and creased with fatigue. Gisulf also has a broken lance sticking through his left shoulder, but hasn't seemed to notice. Crit can tell the three younger Sea Griffons have fought themselves out, even though they are willing, they are too tired to fight and would make an easy killing for the orcs and ogres.
They listen and stare and with as much eagerness as they can muster, they plod off towards the others and safety. Gisulf makes sure to bring up the rear, looking after the others.
The other Sea Griffons stand resolute in a broken horseshoe like formation. Crit cannot see Father Barnet, but he does see Bursi and Druce and Dame Josina. Arwell Reese is also among them, but he doesn't see Calina. The orcs and one small ogre fall back at Crit's approach. They think he is about to attack them and they retreat, clearly fearful. That encourages the Sea Griffons and the small group starts standing taller, holding their shields firmer and making catcalls to the orcs and banging their shields with their weapons.
Bursi gives him a salute and starts translating. The orcs surprise is almost comical and they are about to starting jeering at Crit and calling him coward, when the Verbeeg yells out. The giant is now pointing his crossbow at the orcs and motioning them to fall back. Looking at Crit, the Verbeeg tips two fingers to his eyebrow in some sort of salute or acknowledgement of Crit's intentions and then disappears into the trees, followed rapidly by the rest of the orcs and goblins.
Hector steps out of the Sea Griffon's line, smiling of all things. Hector has a smear of blood across his cheek and dark green snot over one eyebrow, but other than that, he looks unscathed, Tymmen **** himself,he says as he walks up, more happy about that than necessary,And Father Barnet took a hammer to the chest. The Friars are working on him now. Calina has a broken arm, at least I think it is broken and Chesney was stabbed through the foot and I think Derwid is going to loose an ear unless Rya can sew it back. We are good for food, but could use more bandages and throwing spears and arrows, Druce and Arwell are running low.

Critias watches the orcs and ogres retreat back into the forest, looking thoughtfully at the place where the Verbeeg had been standing. They look brutish, these half-giants, and it's easy to assume they are little more than animals. But that one at least was no fool. Doubtless when he saw the Sea Griffons headed his way, he thought exactly the same as Critias had done - he'd wipe out the unwanted arrivals quickly and then melt back into the forest to wait for the army to pass by. Didn't go that way for either Crit or the Verbeeg - although there's no doubt the Sea Griffons got by far the better of that fight, the veteran Griffon thinks as he surveys the carnage around him. They must have done for at least a score of orcs and gnolls, for no losses in return. That's good, and it should mean the orcs will think twice about trying to ambush them in the forest.

"No time for any of that" he says to Hector. "Get 'em moving. Some place in the forest as far away from these orcs as we can find. Sperle said there's over two hundred more of them where this lot came from, so let's put as many trees between us and them as we can. And make sure no one stops to loot any of the dead. We can come back and scavenge for arrows and spears and whatever else we can find, later. We'll just have to hope the army doesn't see the bodies when they pass, or doesn't investigate too closely."

Leaving Hector to arrange getting the Sea Griffons moving again, he goes to see where the friars are working on Father Barnet. But first he finds Tymmen, beckoning the mage to come with him. For some reason, he doesn't feel his usual unease around wizards. Perhaps it is because he seems so young, little more than a boy. Or perhaps it's because Tymmen looks just like Critias felt right after his first engagement with the enemy, all those years ago.

"First battle, huh?" he says as they walk over to where the friars are tending Father Barnet. "We've all been there. They get easier. Soon enough, you won't even think about them" he lies Bluff +10, take 10 for total of 20with practised ease. "My advice? Don't dwell on it." Crit takes out a wineskin, containing the leftovers of the bottles of wine he had been drinking last night in the tavern. "And get drunk. Here. Take this. But not until we are out of our little predicament, you hear? Because right now we still need you with your wits about you. Hector says you're a spell-slinger. What sorcery have you got? Anything that can hide us, if that army sends scouts into the forest poking about?"

As they approach the friars, they pass the body of the half-ogre that Crit slew earlier, lying on the ground in a pool of blood. He gives the corpse a lingering look. Didn't do him much good in the end, but the half-ogre's mail was definitely enchanted in some way, and if Crit
Dice Knowledge (Arms and Armour):
1d20+5 (2)+5 Total = 7
had to guess, perhaps of elven craftmanship too. Which would make it worth a lot of money. And a half-ogre with enchanted mail would probably have all sorts of other interesting items on him, as well. But Critias leaves the corpse where it is. The Verbeeg is bound to be watching, and looting the dead in front of the enemy won't go down well. Most likely it will break their fragile truce straight after they've forged it. Maybe they will get the opportunity later, he thinks to himself ruefully, passing by the corpse.

He checks on the friars, and Father Barnet.

"We need to get him into cover. Not far, but we can't stay here."

Assuming Father Barnet is not too badly injured and can be moved, Critias assists the friars to move the wounded priest into the forest.

Hector shrugs his shoulders at Critias, clearly displeased, but following Crit's orders, Hector starts moving the Sea Griffons away from the skirmish and down towards the river. Bursi heard Critias and he too started moving the Sea Griffons towards the river, only he makes them hold formation, moving in groups of four. Four kneel and make ready to stand, shields up, spears ready, while the rest move twenty feet, then four of them kneel and hold, while the current kneeling group runs behind them and further, until it is their time to kneel and cover again.
While the majority of the Sea Griffons carry out their 'ragged' retreat, Critias rides over to find Tymmen kneeling in the field, trying to gather up a number of thin leather sheafs with gold writing on them and stuff them into his pack. Calina and Dareth stand nearby, guarding him, impatient grimaces on their faces. Tymmen looks up when Critias starts talking to him, his round face smudged with dirt and grass. Tymmen nods in assent and stands up to greet Critias. Tymmen's face smooths over, his cheeks start to wobble and his eyes began to wet with tears as he sees Critias. Tymmen reaches his hands out, wanting to hug Critias', then quickly jams both his hands into his pockets and steps away. Tymmen nods too fast and too quick as Crit talks to him. He does reach out to take the wineskin from Critias, but he doesn't drink, not right away. It is then Dareth slips an arm around his shoulders in a very 'soldiery fashion' and helps Tymmen a slow, first drink. While Tymmen drinks, Dareth looks up at Critias, his eyes and face telling Crit, he and Calina, even with her clearly broken arm, would look after Tymmen. When Crit mentions spells, Tymmen stops slurping wine and wipes his chin, but not his mouth, with his shirt sleeve, I can do that. I have a glamour spell to change our appearance. That seems to give Tymmen confidence and the three of them head towards the river with the other Sea Griffons.
Passing by the body of the dead half-ogre, the blueish black blood already drying, Crit notes the armor, notes the scaled style and quality. it was definitely no ordinary smith made that armor. Crit considers it and believes that armor was probably worth the Sea Griffons entire pay for the next three months, if not more. That is when he notices the Danish axe is finely made as well, and, it has norse runes along the haft. Swanhild had a sword with norse runes. He remembers her rune blade cutting easily through demon flesh.....
Etzel and Orin are both tending to Father Barnet. The man is pale and shaking and breathing slow. Critias can see no blood, but the Father's breastplate is dented beyond repair and the two young friars are working to get it off him. Father Barnett is sitting up, looking around, his eyes soft and not really seeing anything. The Sea Griffons have placed him on a cloak and now Ermac, Derwid, Ghislain and Dines each pick up a corner and start carrying Father Barnett towards the river, along with the rest of the Sea Griffons.
The Sea Griffons move quickly across the field and past the trees lining the river and down the bank alongside the water itself. It is colder down here and more shadowed due to the trees and brush. Sperle walks up, surprising Critas, Half a mile down is good cover. The bank curls over, forming an overhand that is almost cavelike. We can hide there. Something you should know, those orcs and such, were speaking norse, not orcish or common. They were jabbering about some battle the other day, where they killed 'thousands,' of knights and took 'wagons,' of booty. And another thing, they were carrying oars, the kind vikings normally use on their ships.

Critias mulls over Sperle's words as he watches the Griffons making their way towards the river. Some way ahead is Tymmen, with Dareth and Calina keeping a close eye on him. The young mage is not in a good way. But that is only to be expected, having just seen his first battle. And after their conversation, Critias is reasonably confident Tymmen will pull through fine. When Crit gave him something to do, something to think about other than the fighting he had just been witness to, he reacted well enough. That's good. He's no Elberich, but everyone starts somewhere. Even the seasoned Saxon wizard would have been as raw as Tymmen, once. As Critias himself was, long ago.

"Didn't know orcs could speak Norse" he growls in response to Sperle, not really sure what to make of this news. "I'd say it was some sort of chicanery - get a load of orcs dressed up like Norsemen, give them some longships, have them sail down the Rhine and set on some ally of the northerners. Get them all turning on each other and all that. Because there's not enough of that going on already, is there? Always room for a little more treachery in this war. But I don't know. Seems a lot of trouble to go to, teaching them all to speak Norse, and in any case no one knows who the hell is on whose side this week anyway. Maybe they're just orcs come down here raiding from the north."

Something doesn't seem quite right here, for sure. Crit's never heard of orcs and gnolls sailing Viking longships to go on their raiding - but that doesn't mean they can't, he supposes. He shrugs.

"One thing I do know. That half-ogre I fought had some fine chainmail. Enchanted. Worth more money than we've seen in the last three months. And his axe was enchanted too. Norse runes - seen 'em before. Powerful sorcery. Don't know how he would've come by them, but I want to get them, once we're done here. Big payday for us, if we can sell them. But that's if the body's still there once that army rolls by, which I reckon it won't be. That Verbeeg will want to recover those items, for sure. We can have a look though, when the time comes."

Critias is about to head off towards the front of the group when something occurs to him. He adds to Sperle,

"Here's what you could do, if you can get in and out without being seen. Go and see whether those orcs really have got any booty or not. And where their ships are, if they actually have any. But be careful. Don't let them see you. Talk to Tymmen about that, he reckons he's got some glamour might help you in that regard. But if you reckon they'll spot you, don't bother. We can go have a look later, when this army's gone by."

With that, Crit spurs his horse towards the front of the line to direct the Sea Griffons towards the cover Sperle spoke of. Once there, he posts a veteran Sea Griffon with good eyes to watch for the oncoming army, and two to keep a watch on the forest, looking out for the orcs. The rest, he tells to rest - and in no uncertain terms, to stay out of sight.

Before he heads out, Sperle looks gravely at Critias,I have heard say, but not seen with my own eyes, that Jarl Vre Uddricson had recruited and trained orcs and urok-hai to sail the saxon longship. A less worthy craft than the norse use...Sperle scratches his chin a bit before continuing, I have also heard that the Jarl Uddricson has allied with Ruigwul of Dunhorst and his half-breed folk. It is possible that half-orge you fought is from there.
Sperle takes his leave, Roosje following close behind. Critias can't help but notice she is eating again. This time it looks like a sausage slathered in boiled cabbage stuffed in some kind of pie crust. Critias watches them go and then rides forward to lead the Sea Griffons into the river bottom. Down here, on the banks of the river, there is still heavy snow and hard ice along the banks and the water is beyond chilly. A man could loose a foot just stepping in that close to freezing water. Critias hears a splash and sees Dommen and Feken splashing around and throwing water every which way. A couple other Sea Griffons are making snowballs. Bursi stands there glaring at them to apparently no avail.

The Sea Griffons do make their way to the overhang. Which to Critias, is not an overhang at all, but more of a series of connected shallow caves. Old fire pits and sleeping beds dug into the sides are readily apparent. Critias can tell, come warmer weather, smugglers, brigands and gypsy folk more than likely spend time here. The Sea Griffons quickly settle in, breaking out food and wine and excitedly discussing the events of the last few days, the "battle" with the orcs in particular. Critias is inspecting all the Sea Griffons, taking note of their morale and their physical condition when Josina walks up to him, her back straight, her haired comb, like she was attending a ball rather than preparing to camp out in a smuggler's cave, Sgt., your quarters are ready for you as well as some hot tea. I can bring some spiced cider if you prefer and we have boiled eel and pottage for you when you are ready. Master Elyas and Lemlinus have arrived and wait to report. Shall I send them to you now or have them wait upon you in your quarters?

Critias does not recall hearing the name Ruigwul of Dunhorst before, but he has heard of Jarl Uddricson, one of the more powerful Viking earls of the Norselands. Their paths have never crossed before, as far as he recalls, but none of the Norse he has met had good words to say about the Jarl of Svealand. Small wonder, if he spends his time with orcs and ogres.

Once in the cave system, Crit finishes checking over the Sea Griffons, taking note of wounds as well as general morale. All in all, this was a good result, he decides. They have all done well, coming out of the recent battle mostly unscathed and having given a good account of themselves. He finds a place to sit against one of the walls, near the entrace, and is just settling in to rest when Josina arrives. He raises an eyebrow at her words. He is not entirely sure what sort of "quarters" she might have put together in a freezing cave like this, but in any case separate arrangements like these are not how Critias does things. In a unit of soldiers, the officers might billet separately, but the Sea Griffons are, when all said and done, just mercenaries. The dregs of soldiery, some might say. The scum of a fighting force. Critias is no lord or knight, and he billets with the rest of the scum.

"Elyas is here, is he? Good, send him and Lemlinus over. I'll be staying out here, keeping an eye on things. But doubtless the friars will appreciate somewhere quieter to work on Father Barnet, he took a heavy blow out there and he is not in good shape. Have Orin and Etzel use the quarters you've set up."

Considering she was in the thick of the fighting too, Josina has recovered quicker and better than the rest of the Griffons, finding time to prepare food and tea. Or perhaps it was Rya. He's still not quite sure how a priestess and her maid come to be part of a mercenary unit, but in the short time they've been with the Sea Griffons, they've already made themselves more than useful.

"Thank you" he adds, a little gruffly. "And you did well out there, too. Could have gone differently, that fight. You played your part in making sure it didn't."
