Hello, Ysolde! Your setting seems especially interesting and I would love to be a part of it, especially since the players are allowed to play “monster races”. This would be my first Pathfinder (1st Edition) game, though I have experience with the similar 3.5 Edition D&D. In any case I have ordered the Pathfinder Core Rulebook and intend to read it in the next couple of days – that said, I might need some help with the rules in the future. In the case of Thoriel I am experimenting with a “pacifist” PC who is supposed to have a “supporting” role in the group. I would be very grateful for any feedback you have to offer!


Thoriel of the Broken Blade

Description:
Thoriel has the muscular but lean build of a typical Movanic Deva, standing over six feet tall and possessing a pair of large, feathery wings. His decision to leave the Heavenly legions is reflected in the midnight blue coloration of his originally stark white wings. Though more than 10000 years old he still possesses the characteristics and immaculate skin of a youth, though he usually keeps his face and body hidden in his voluminous azure cloak. The only thing that betrays his true age are his eyes that contain a deep sorrow which contrasts greatly with his otherwise youthful appearance.

One (or more) question, what goes first? RHD or CR? For example I take a monster with 8HD but CR 6, will I get 6 levels or 8?

Racial HD are fairly irrelevant to the equation. With an EL 14 start, you get CR 6 + 8 Class levels. However, for every 3 levels beyond EL 6, you can add an additional class level. So at EL 9 you add +1 Class level, and at EL 12 you add a 2nd.

This leaves you with
8 Racial Hit Dice.
10 Class Levels.

Note that Ysolde authorized converting Racial HD to class levels if desired, up to a max total of 14 Class Levels.

You could, therefore, end up with 4 Racial HD and 14 Class Levels.

Well, if you are converting racials to class levels, I don't think it'd be quite fair if your character still gets the bonus levels for being over cr 6. The point of the +1s is because at a certain level class levels are more valuable than racial dice. All Ysolde's decision I suppose, but it seems rather powerful if all racial dice are traded and one monster is a higher class level than a humanoid character.

Class levels are maxed at 14. You may be correct that exchanging Racial HD for Class levels modifies the base CR. 1 for 1 might be reasonable.

Above example would therefore start with 2 Racial HD and 14 Class levels instead, converting 2 more Racial HD rather than the 2 free class levels from being a monster in a mixed party.

Might be wise to impose a rule that if you exchange any racial HD, you must exchange ALL of them, up to 14 total Class levels.


Just realized this wouldn't work. Class Level = 1 CR would be less advantageous in most cases than simply keeping racial HD and gaining free class levels every 3 levels, since you must still add CR to Class levels to a max Effective Level of 14.

I guess we'd need a ruling on this to see how Ysolde prefers to handle it.

Honestly it may be easiest to nix the trading racial HD for Class levels ruling and stick to free class levels every 3 EL's to max of half CR as normal.

Well, it's not always true. Depending on monster, some classes have worth of +0.5CR/Level.

Adding any Class level to a monster generally adds 1 CR to a creature, regardless of class chosen.

The ruling I was originally working with to swap racial HD for class levels worked only if you did not also add CR for these levels. Vaerdis is probably right that this could be game breaking, especially if Ysolde's original intent was to run monsters with minimal class levels.

Some one asked if they could simply add class levels to their CR to equal 14 and Ysolde said he coulld if he wanted to. So I am doing the same thing, much easier than to figure out the other way.

Well, the value of a monster's CR isn't exclusively HD, for example, if I switch out succubi hd for bard class levels, I would lose nothing but 2 BAB and 1 hit point per hit die, but would gain lots of utility-based spells since monster abilities scale on total hit dice, not racial dice exclusively.

No of course not which is why simply swapping 1 Racial HD for 1 Class level, are not, technically, equivalent in power. As it stands, Ysolde's acceptance of swapping Racial HD for Class levels does make them equivalent, which means my earlier break down was correct if allowed to stand.

If they are ruled equivalent, then a CR 6, 8 HD creature can end up with 4 Racial HD and 14 Class Levels and still be CR 14. Yes, even with a total of 18 Hit Dice.
