Isabella Chatham (The Witch)

right-aligned image
Name: Isabella Chatham
Gender: She/her
Skin: Witch
Look: Lithe
Eyes: Calculating eyes
Origin: Pagan Initiate

Stats: the "Calculating and Venomous" variant:
Hot -1, Cold 1, Volatile -1, Dark 2

Experience: +1 Failed to Turn Yasmin On, +2 end of Scene 13
End-of-Scene-2 advancement: Take all Hexes

Harm: [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ]

Sympathetic Tokens: You gain power from Sympathetic Tokens - items of personal significance taken from others. Sympathetic Tokens count as Strings.
Hex-Casting: You can cast Hexes. To cast them, either expend a Sympathetic Token during a secret ritual, or meet the target’s gaze and chant at them in tongues. Then roll with Dark. On a 10 up, the Hex works, and can easily be reversed. On a 7-9, it works but choose one:
- the casting does you 1 Harm;
- the Hex has weird side effects;
- trigger your Darkest Self.
Binding - The person can not physically harm others
Illusions (Picked "False Prophecies") The hexed sees false prophecies everywhere. You have no control over the exact images or manifestations.
Ring of Lies - Whenever the person attempts to lie, they hear a piercing ringing noise. Big lies will often make their knees buckle and disorient them. Severe lies can cause harm or even brain damage.
Watching - You can enter a deep sleep, and see the world through the eyes of the hexed. You can feel their reactions to and impressions of what they are seeing.
Wither - The Hexed loses all of their hair, or teeth fall out, or their period comes unexpected and heavy, or skin gets sickly yellow and spotty. Whatever the specifics, it's bad.
Sex/Intimacy Move: After sex, you can take a Sympathetic Token from them. They know about it, and it’s cool.

Darkest Self: The time for subtlety and patience is over. You’re too powerful to put up with their garbage any longer. You hex anyone who slights you. All of your hexes have unexpected side effects, and are more effective than you are comfortable with. To escape your Darkest Self, you must offer peace to the one you have hurt the most.

Backstory DetailsConcept: holier-than-thou backwoods Appalachian crafter. Sort of a IRL hillbily rose twitter avatar.
Theme: make the world as you would, by an act of will.
Problem: the world you want is rarely the world others want.

Musical flavor:
Fleetwood Mac - Landslide
Allie X - Old Habits Die Hard

Attractive, but not as attractive as she thinks. Tall and thin, but neither as tall or as thin as she thinks. Scotch-Irish pale, with sun-kissed auburn hair (neither as kissed nor as red as she thinks). Often wear floppy hats, hand-made jewelry, hand-embossed belts, hand-sewn bags. Gives the impression of a wispy summer child. Is in fact a misguided Machievellian neo-pagan anarchist revolutionary.

Sketch of a personality/motivation
Smugly convinced she knows everything and can do everything. Yes, capable, yes, smart. But not the smartest, not the most capable. Yet you can not convince her otherwise (though she'll put on a veneer of backwoods humble folksiness as necessary to deflect).

Of course, witch powers make it easier to realize her ability to have her way. Child of rural poverty, learned folkways. Went to the Folk School, dragged along by parents. Plays the ukulele, weaves baskets, makes wire jewelry, knits, etc. But on her third trip there, another class was offered. One that wasn't listed on the website...

She is a total scold about environmentalism, classism, lapses in wokeness, etc. She thinks the world should be a simpler kinder place and will curse you the **** out if you disagree with her concept of the ideal world in even the smallest detail. If she detects any hint of superiority in an interlocutor, she is very happy to point out the privilege and assumption (from her vantage of moral superiority). Her "Dark" stat implies that she will do anything it takes to achieve her morally-superior goals.

ConnectionsStrings I hold:
1 Sympathetic Token (and therefore string) against Nickolas Scylla:

1 Sympathetic Token (and therefore string) against Jennifer Webb:

NPC tokens: Linnea Wiencek (phone number scrawled on paper); (Gary's token was used up to give him the binding Hex)

2 Strings against Teresia Moore

1 String held against Ted:

Strings held against me:
1 String held against me by Sasha Shepherd: they saw Isabella take Nickolas Scylla's ring spent to give "two faced" condition
Other relationships
Positive: Yasmin

Negative: Gabriel
Home and Family Isabella's family is poor. They are hillbilly Scotch-Irish through and through. They take the culture of the region seriously and earnestly. They tried to teach her ways of kindness and respect and self-sufficiency. They sent her to summer camps (probably on scholarships) to learn about her people and resourcefulness. One of those camps turned her into a radical anti-authoritarian witch.

They live in an old dilapidated farmhouse on some rural route. They can only afford it because parents of parents of parents built it. Fallen porch, skewed copula tower. A barn in back with holes in the roof, and a few broken-down cars and pieces of machinery within. Tobacco field beyond. Goats and chickens in the yard. Barely-functional DSL internet service.

Coven WIP: Initial development had sort of a “kill the kings” “won’t be fooled” Scottish fae flavor from her pagan coven (a la Pratchett’s Wee Free Men series (the Nac Mac Feegle))

The Camp is legally/officially The Retreat for Whole Remedy and Lifetime Well-Being. Often just called "Craft Camp" by locals. Located on Brocken Hill, adjacent to the county fairgrounds. The Coven Mother is called Granny Hollinger. The Coven will often refer to themselves as "the Sisterhood". To the extent they mention the existence of themselves, as Witches, to outsiders, they will only say "Sisters" or "Friends" or maybe in the third-party as "Wise Women" or "Wise folk." "Hag" is a slur (in part because it mixes them up with the great power found in Cressida Bay, even if outsiders have no idea).
GM of Uncaged: Found Family, a 5e one-shot, and Masks: a City to Save, a City to Make, teen drama Powered by the Apocalypse
