New Game?

Hint: Some pictures will have secret text later in the story...

This is Castle Town, the aptly-named capital of the kingdom of Midoor. Even from here in the Lowtown District, you can see the splendor of King Cidrick's magnificent palace as it towers above the rest of the vast city. Whether you arrived by carriage or were dropped off here by royal guards, you will have to visit the castle in order to answer the king's call, but the walk there will take you some time. So you begin the journey by walking forward.

The city is already into its full swing of life. You see peddlers offering a variety of wares from under their makeshift tarped stalls. A few pick-pocket orphans are bumping into strangers as they run the streets, though they avoid you with a wary glance. An elf in a purple corset stands by the doorway of a tavern, inviting people inside. And guards in polished steel armor stand at major hubs to help ensure as much law-abiding peace as they can within the city.

Certainly you could make your way straight to the castle if you wish, speak with the king and investigate the location where the princess was kidnapped from. Or you could check around town first and see if there is anything useful to be gained here. Someone might have some information if you know where to look, and a capital city like this one is bound to have some unique items for sale that could assist you in your quest. Castle Town is known as a city of possibilities, and given the king's promise you may be ruling from this town someday, so getting the lay of the city could be a good idea. You may even consider stopping by the guild to see about hiring some help. But if you are not yet sure what you need, getting information from the castle may help in that as well.

Your adventure has begun. Your next step forward is yours to make, and yours alone.

OOCWelcome to your story thread. Please post a reply that introduces your character and gives a little background of why they are here, as you did in your application. Try to give me an idea of where your character wants to go or what they want to do so that I can respond accordingly.

I plan to be posting OOC notes in field sets, as you can see. You are free to do the same or use Spoiler Buttons as you wish.

I am assuming that your group has arrived at the same time and been informed that you will be working together. It is up to you all to decide if you have met before this moment. You are welcome to split up and meet at the castle or travel together as you wish.

Let me know if you have any questions. I am here to help you tell an amazing story with your characters as the star, so I am more than happy to help!

Prilla
right-aligned image

Although a native to Midoor, it had been a while since she had been this close to the palace. While it might seem as if the bustle of every day life is continuing as normal, there was a palpable tension in the air, or at least it seemed that way to Prilla. She stood still for a few moments staring up at the grand palace while recalling the time she spent there with the Princess. She glanced towards the orphans knowing full well what they were up to, as she was one of them only years ago, and decided to let them "bump" into her while she made a couple of her gil easily accessible. When she was their age, she would rather earn her gil than get a handout. While she was by no means wealthy, Prilla knew she could always find a few loose gil of her own if she needed to.

She needed some information before she chased headlong after the Princess, but first she had to meet those that she would be working with in the castle proper. It might also be a good place to start asking questions, though Prilla wasn't sure if the people in the castle would know what to pay attention to like the people in the streets would. Her boots met the stone road softly as her feet carried her forward with a heaviness in her chest that she didn't quite understand.

OOC
I marked down a couple of gil if that's okay. I can also change my text around if everyone else would rather have already met or if we'd rather meet somewhere other than the castle.

Aneane
right-aligned image

As she stepped out of the carriage, Aneane paused for a moment to gaze up at the castle rising over the town. Mixed emotions swept over her. She was justifiably proud of her heritage, but almost furiously mortified that her country could be caught off-guard to such an extent. She understood that there would always be more powerful enemies to be wary of, but her youthful pride was not so easily mollified. Well, I guess that's why _I_ am here she thought to herself. The black and white morality of her young mind found it easy to solve such complex problems. The young warrior squared her shoulders, and set off at once for the castle. In her surety, she believed that those closest to the abduction would be able to provide the best information on how to proceed.

Aneane walked with purpose, her step light and her pace brisk. She had been in Castle Town before, of course, but felt she could not spare a moment for the usual sights. The expression on her face must have been rather grim, for she was spared the pleading of the usual swarm of street urchins. Aneane was not aware of this at all, however; she was not hard-hearted, nor miserly, but, having decided on her purpose, she refused to be side-tracked by any lesser matters.

Once she arrived at the castle proper, she presented herself to the guards at the gate. She snapped off a respectful salute to the guards on duty; her favorite arms tutor had been a long-time guardsman, and she had nothing but the deepest respect for the royal soldiers.

"Hallo, the gate! I am Lady Aneane Celefair, and I have been summoned to the castle on this dreadful day."

OOC
I went with "going to the castle independently". Aneane only has WIS 8, so I'm thinking she would either be single-minded on tackling the problem at the source, or just plain not think of looking outside the castle for info. Also, please forgive me if any formatting issues crop up with the stat block or images or anything; I'm not quite adept at working the codes for these kinds of things.

Teldryn
left-aligned image

It's little wonder these people never stood a chance against the Empire.

These were the foremost thoughts of one Teldryn Wallace as he made his way towards the castle, newly emancipated from his brief stint in the Lowtown jail and spared the king's justice in exchange for righting at least one crime his people had committed against the kingdom, and very conspicuously missing a left arm beneath his cloak. As painful as his very violent defection had been in the midst of the raid, it had bought him this chance to prove his intentions. Then again, it was just as likely the king would decide to have his head regardless when all was said and done. That would not deter him from going, but it would certainly be a miserable end to it all. An end that he deserved, but miserable nonetheless.

It also occurred to Teldryn that he would increase his chances of surviving said meeting by keeping his thoughts to himself regarding the backwards nature of the kingdom. Compared to the technological wonders Magitek made possible within the Emprie's borders, even an admittedly well built castle town such as this one seemed quaint. And these urchins in the street, who were free to roam about and scrounge out a living as parasites on the hard workers of society? Back home, they would have all been rounded up and immediately processed into the academy system to be forged into something useful to the greater whole. Perhaps this most recent humiliation would be a learning opportunity for the masses. Which is what made the actual implementation of the raid so frustrating to the former imperial soldier. Senseless slaughter of even non-combatants, an unnecessary cruelty when the forces of Midoor had already been routed. And the kidnapping of the princess for... what? Was this how they planned to bring Midoor into the fold? Holding the king's and queen's daughter ransom to ensure their compliance? Unnecessary again, the Empire's technology ensured they could crush the kingdom at a moment's notice. Furthermore, kidnapping the princess would make the people all the more unwilling to actually consider the benefits that true modernity could bring to their lives.

After we riddle half the populace full of bullet holes, of course, or have you forgotten why you betrayed your people?

The old bitterness returned, the same he had felt mulling over recent events in his jail cell. Fighting for an ideal which had never existed in the first place, but also faced with the squalor of an inferior infrastructure, either unable or incapable of embracing the future. The inability to reconcile the conflicting thoughts left a sour note in Teldryn's mind, and he dealt with it the only way he knew how.

He had to focus on the mission. Saving the princess was all that mattered now. More than his past, more than his prejudice, more than his own life. The only other consideration he made as he came upon the castle gates was ensuring that his arm and armament were well hidden within his pack. It would not do to be late for this appointment because he was held up by an angry mob, so for the time being, he was just the one armed man making his way down the street.

And these others he was working with? Hopefully, they would not be so quick to slit his throat in his sleep the first chance they got.

"Hallo, the gate! I am Lady Aneane Celefair, and I have been summoned to the castle on this dreadful day."

A quick glance down the way and the source of the shout was made clear. A tall, armored woman seemed to be seeking entry into the castle. A noble of some kind, if her words were to be trusted. She certainly sounded formal enough to be nobility, though one would be hard pressed to tell from her equipment. As he came closer to the gate and to the woman, he noticed her ears. Elvaan. Not unusual in Midoor, just worth a brief change in notation in identifying the noble. Regardless, whatever business she had here, it was none of his concern. He moved past her with barely another glance, a letter of introduction bearing the royal seal of Midoor now grasped in his one good hand, another precaution in case it had to be explained why one bearing Imperial arms was being allowed to wander Castle Town.

"Here." Teldryn offered the letter up brusquely to the guard, never having been one for social graces. All the information necessary should be written on that parchment, what more was there to say? He had also forgotten to consider the fact that the elvaan woman was already currently engaged with them to gain entry.

OOC
Teldryn would not risk snooping around a foreign capital on his own, given his status. His priority is to solidify his situation and meet up with the rest of the team in order to properly coordinate their efforts.

Also, going with a simple stat block for now.

Receiving an honorable salute in return, Aneane is the first to arrive at the gate followed closely by Teldryn and finally Prilla. Teldryn hands over his document to the gate guard, whose expression grows grim. He says nothing to any of those gathered but instead notifies a runner to run into the castle to make inquiries about their guests. The runner is quick, and soon steps back out of the main doors waving as he returns.

"So the king wishes to speak with all...3 of you together," he muses, though he only looks Aneane in the eye. Clearly the knight at the castle gate looks like he has different opinions about the 3 travelers had come before him, but the soldier has enough professionalism to maintain his composure as he escorts them towards the castle. "The king and queen are quite troubled since the attack. Every citizen lost has affected them, and the princess most of all. I trust that no one would be cruel enough to take advantage of such noble hearts in their grief."

He pauses when they arrive at the steps of the main entrance and turns to face the group's general direction. "It will be a straight shot through the hall and into the throne room where the court will receive you. When we arrive, you are not to ever move closer to the king or queen than I shall be standing. After I introduce you, the king will address you directly and you may then answer him or anyone else that speaks to you. So, how do you all wish to be introduced?"

Prilla
right-aligned image

While Prilla's thoughts drifted, she soon found herself arriving at the gate after the neatly dressed man, though his attire stood out to her as perhaps a more practical need for tidyness than fashion. She had seen plenty of vain men in her time, and his clothing was not nearly gaudy enough to give her that impression of him. She wasn't sure what to make of him just yet, but she didn't think too hard on it as her focus shifted to the Elvaan woman. She seemed...intense? Then again, most Elvaan people seemed too uptight to her. They're a proud people, and she doesn't know this woman enough to make any further judgments just yet.

As she approached the initial guard, she gave the man a big grin before addressing the man with an almost flippant tone. "I'm here to save the Princess." She didn't want anyone to know how invested she really was, perhaps out of some strange personal sense of pride. She clasped her hands together behind her neck as she waited for the runner to return. The runner was surprisingly quick, and a bit of relief washed over her as they're told they're going to speak with the King. Prilla was worried she might be turned away and would have to search for the Princess on her own, though she would not hesitate to do so.

Prilla followed alongside the others as she took in the sight of the castle. While she had been here before, she was never allowed to go anywhere without the Princess and they spent a majority of the time in the royal garden. She wondered if the King would recognize her. It wasn't as if there were many Humes with tails running around, but she never directly interacted with him. She mulled over whether or not it would be better if the King recognized her as she continued following til the knight abruptly stopped in his tracks.

After she had listened to the knight give his instructions to the group, she spoke up with a little more eagerness than she intended. "Prilla...erm, Sir. Just Prilla will do." She wasn't about to show disrespect to the King, especially so soon after the kidnapping. As far as she knew, he is a good man.

Aneane

While the runner rushed off, Aneane took a moment to consider the new arrivals. She sent a side-eye glance at the stout Hume. While she was not exactly a bubbly personality herself, the Hume seemed to be brusque, almost to the point of rude. A gate-keeper might be a low-ranking soldier, but was still owed common respect. The other late-comer was quite the opposite. The sprightly young girl - Or is she; what is that? Aneane mused to herself, catching sight of the curling tail - seemed bright and lively, almost the complete opposite of the Hume. Aneane nodded once to the pair, by way of greeting, but was cut off before she could make any introductions by the returning guard.

She listened intently to the instructions their guide offered them. She had no intention of offending the royal family, especially at such a time as this. She followed along behind their guide attentively. When asked for her name, she responded dutifully.

I cannot speak for these others, but I am Lady Aneane Celefair.

OOC
Question: are genome and hume common enough that Aneane will know what they are? I assumed so, being core races, just wanted to check.

"Teldryn Wallace"

Now that he was within the castle itself, in the very home of the royal family and center of Midoor's power, Teldryn could not help but feel some apprehension at coming face to face with the kingdom's rulers. It felt as if this moment, more than any other, was the time for proper judgement to take place, his interactions until now feeling wholly impersonal. Yes, due to the imperial military's policy of operational compartmentalization, he had not been aware of their plans to kidnap the princess, but he had still killed enough of the kingdom's forces just as any soldier would in order to support the Empire's goals.

A last minute change of heart would not bring back the dead.

He clutched at the empty socket where his left arm should be, deciding to reflect instead on these people who would apparently be his companions on this mission. The Elvaan noblewoman had the bearing of a warrior, and seemed reliable enough. And it made sense that a member of the nobility would be interested in taking up this challenge. Quite frankly, it was surprising more of the noble class had not been summoned for this task, or at least not enough of them as to render Teldryn's own assistance superfluous. And as for the other woman, lightly dressed, nimble frame, looking a bit unkempt, and far too laid back for her own good. Not a good first impression, all in all. And then there was the... was that a tail?

Though his face remained neutral, his eyes gave out a few rapid blinks in surprise as he reconfirmed the extra appendage coming from her back. He stayed silent, not quite certain how to even broach the topic, but kept throwing unsubtle glances back at Prilla's tail as they waited to make their way into the throne room.

The guard nods and turns back to face the main gates, which 2 more guards open for the group. Once they pass through, the doors are then shut behind them with a hard heavy thud. Interestingly, neither the gates nor the castle interior show any signs of the recent combat.

As he had foretold, the guard continues to lead the trio down the entrance hall past a few more knights and into the royal hall where a few nobles are seated on a raised platform, most notably the king and queen at the center. He stops in the central area,a good 20 paces from their 2 steps leading up to the platform begin, and bows as low as he can without bending his knees. "Your majesties and members of the royal court, may I present Lady Aneane Celefair, Teldryn Wallace, and...Prilla. They have come to answer your call for a champion to rescue your daughter."

"Do not waste the king's time!" sneers the king's advisor, the only man standing in the room besides the trio and the the soldier that has just spoken. "We need champions, not scholars! And how is the royal line to continue if we marry the kings only heir to her?"

The king gives his advisor a stern but weary look. "Be at ease, Mokrave. Our daughter's plight is too severe to weed out aid on appearances alone. Let them speak for themselves before we pass judgement."

The queen nods, maintaining a polite but unreadable expression. "As my husband says, dear Mokrave, our daughter must be found. And these three have come to us seeking to lend their aid." She turns to look down at each one of them as if inviting them to speak.

OOCIt is not immediately obvious if anyone here recognizes any of you. You may make appropriate skill checks to read, persuade, or otherwise socially interact with the people here.

I would advise not moving from your current standing positions too much, at least not until you have gained some levels.

Prilla
right-aligned image

Prilla took note of the damage-free castle interior as she considers what that might mean. They must have had the singular goal of kidnapping the Princess and getting out of the castle before anyone could stop them. Even if that was the case, there would surely be some sort of evidence of combat somewhere. They couldn't possibly avoid fighting the royal guard unless they had some unusual point of entry.

Prilla continued following the knight up until the point where he gestures for them to stop before the King and Queen. Though Prilla had to become familiar with proper etiquette while spending time with the Princess, she was still uneasy when it came time to show the proper respect to the King and Queen. She bowed low, though her tail continued moving on its own accord while she held the bow for a few moments. She listened to the King's advisor's words full of contempt as she pulled herself back up to stand before them. Prilla couldn't help but wish the man would have suffered a head clobbering during the attack.

When given the opportunity to speak, Prilla does so with far more respect than she gave the guard. "Thank you for seeing us, your Majesties. I am certain you have had many loyal citizens wishing to offer their aid in any way they can, but I believe I am up to the task in a way most are not. I hope that you might have a use for one talented in the art of subterfuge and with the ability to use magic." She wasn't sure if she was supposed to be selling herself or not, but she also wasn't entirely certain what was expected of them at the moment. She still had questions, though she would wait for a better opportunity to ask them.

While waiting for the others to speak, she took a moment to see if it was obvious that anyone recognized her and took note of anything else that stood out to her about the room's occupants. She

A brief flash of sadness flashes across the queen's face before she is able to restore her courtly emotional mask. "I suppose resorting to subterfuge will be necessary. Goddesses know we do not have the strength to take her back by force. We barely managed to keep the soldiers out of our home, for all the good it did us."

Mokrave moves to stand beside the queen, giving her a simple reassuring touch on her shoulder. Neither one makes eye contact with the other, but standing so close the party can see a resemblance between the 2 humes. When he speaks, however, Mokrave's tone does not hint at any sympathy or polite resignation. "As my queen says, there is evidence of imperial spies being behind the abduction. How can we know that these 3 are trustworthy?"

"That is hardly a concern at this point,"mentions a viera noble without looking at Mkrave. "The empire has demonstrated that they can take whatever they wish from us by force or subterfuge. Though I hate to admit it, our kingdom is not worth sending spies or saboteurs to further keep us at bay."

"If that were true, then why not occupy us or finish us off-lali?"] asks one of the 2 dwarven nobles.

"Why not ask them yourself?" says the Elvaan noble, though her gaze does not directly focus on Teldryn or anyone else on the ground level.

"Enough!" says the king in a weary but firm voice. Everyone else is silent. "I value your opinions, of course, but bickering is pointless. We all feel like helpless Leafers after the attack, but I should appreciate helpful suggestions for moving forward. And these 3 are offering us their aid." He gives the trio a slight bow, a sign of respect when coming from the king. "Please, my guests, you must understand what shape our hearts must be in. Speak encouragement, that my court and I might have hope in you. Have you a plan to rescue our daughter? Do you wish to investigate the spot where she was taken? Or perhaps you have other requests for aid on this mission?"

Aneane

Aneane bowed deeply upon being presented in the throne room. She had been before, but had rarely had the opportunity to spend much time there. Her family, though noble, was a very minor house, so she was not surprised that no one present recognized her, or the others. Even in spite of the recent events, however, it was taking all of her discipline not to react to the cold reception they were receiving. She grounded the butt of her weapon, and stood at strict attention while Prilla spoke.

After the... unusual girl said her piece, Aneane decided to speak up as well. She addressed the gathered nobles as a group, but kept her intense gaze upon the king himself.

"Your majesties, please accept my deepest sympathies for this attack. I can only guess at the depth of your despair. Despite what some may think, however, the three of us are here to offer our help, our service, in this dark time. Despite what has been said, we three are here at your summons, on your command.

Your majesty, I think searching the area where the princess was taken from would be the best start. I doubt anything has been missed, but fresh eyes may find something. Of course, we would accept the wisdom of you and your advisors, as well."

Aneane bowed her head respectfully as she finished speaking. She stepped back to await the royal decision.

Throwing a couple rolls for info. Seems there is some disagreement as to our involvement. Once things resolve, I'll ask IC to investigate the scene

EDIT: apparently, some very crappy rolls

Teldryn

"Furthermore, any details regarding her disappearance would help us greatly in our initial investigation." Now that things were underway, thoughts of strange tails where they should not be went to the wayside. This was a mission briefing, same as any other. Teldryn just had to ignore the fact that the mission was being given by a pair of grieving parents. No need for niceties. Straight to the point. "List of people in her company at the time of her kidnapping, regular schedule, security protocols in case of an attack, possible escape routes if things were to get dire, anybody with the knowledge of such protocols, and data on enemy troop movements after the empire claimed its prize. Narrowing down the means of the kidnapping as quickly as we can will be telling in not only determining where we search next, but also just how deeply you may possibly have been infiltrated, if at all. This ...fortification wouldn't have borne the brunt of a focused assault for long if the enemy had shown any desire to breach your walls, so the lack of firepower to accomplish this goal speaks to a great deal of confidence in their measures."

Yes. Fortification was a good word to use. A better idea, at least, than calling this castle a rustic, quaint stone coffin in the face of the forces which threatened them. Sadly, that was the only consideration he made in amending his speech as he continued.

"To that end, a map of the castle would be helpful. And perhaps any names that come to mind of anybody in your circle who has spoken of appeasement with the empire in recent months? However, I would not take any more than a day for this investigation. An advantage granted by Midoor's crushing, inevitable defeat is that the empire's forces will not be expecting a reprisal so quickly, most especially from a small group such as us. Unless of course, somebody in this very room actually does turn out to be a traitor, in which case..." the soldier managed a shrug with his singular arm, somewhat dismissing the inevitable trouble such a situation would cause them. "In either case, we would be wise to make haste with our actions."

OOC

23 Technology roll to determine if Teldryn recognized if any magitek brought on the raid would have been capable of breaching the castle walls, and what weaponry would have been necessary if that had been the goal.

14 Engineering to measure from the look of the castle how much punishment it could take from magitek weaponry.

6 Perception to take note of any notable movement in the room during the proceedings.

The king opens his mouth to speak an answer to Aneane, but Teldryn leaves him a bit flabbergasted and unsure how to answer. Instead the queen addresses their requests. "I am not certain that we can arrange for a map of the castle, but you are welcome to examine my daughter's chambers. We can send you an escort that knows the layout of the castle and was there when the attack happened. In the meantime..." She looks back to her husband.

The king nods."Yes, I believe the guard that introduced you can take you to her chambers. Mokrave, could you gather a list of everyone that went with you on our last envoy trip to the empire?" Mokrave looks very...unhappy. But he gives the king a nod. "Excellent. Then let us proceed as our guests have requested. Unless the 3 of you require anything more?"

The guard stands and waits for the trio to speak. Afterwards, he intends to lead them to the princess's room.

Prilla

Prilla was relieved as she felt as though she sold her worth enough to be allowed to be part of the group to search for the Princess. Imperial spies most likely being behind the abduction doesn't really surprise her, but it definitely complicates things. She doesn't quite suspect anyone in the room of being anything more than just jerks, however. The dwarves brought up a good point, or at least put her on a different branch of thought over the entire situation. What possible reason could they have for kidnapping the Princess if they have the means to do far more?

She remained quiet for now as she listened to the others give their opinions on how they should begin their investigation. The man with the...what's wrong with his arm? She furrowed her brow as she tried not to stare for too long while appreciating how thorough he was in his request.

After the Queen and King spoke, Prilla shook her head. "I believe that should be more than enough to start." She doubted that they would give her as thorough of a tour as she would like. Being able to inspect the Princess' chambers should hopefully point them in the right direction, or at least give them some more clues as to how this was so easy for the Empire. She looked to the others to see if they had anything else to add. They seemed far more prepared for this than Prilla was, as she had mostly come here out of impulse.

Prilla was ready and eager to start off, and would follow the guard when it was time to do so.
