Izel was born a native of Tecalco, which put him right in the middle of a religious war, not of his choosing. The Burning Mirror Compact saw them as nothing more than blood to appease their hungry gods. The Flower Union was little better, trying to turn them all into soldiers to fill out the ranks of their failing war effort. Either way, he and his friends would end up dead. But on Tecalco, as on no other world, there was a third option for those lucky few with the inner strength to achieve it. The Temple of the Clear Sky. It was a wonderous place where neither the "old way" nor the "true way" held sway and more miracles happened on a daily basis than a years worth of bloody altars could garner.
That is not to say that life within the temple was all wine and chocolate though. While disciples of the Clear Sky were suppose to stay strictly neutral in the conflict, both the Compact and the Union saw the advantage of having a Psion in their ranks and did their best to lure students to their respective sides. However, even within the temple itself there were bitter rivalries between the pupils of different masters to prove that their path to psionic mastery was the greatest method. On the other hand, the students of any one master often formed lifelong bonds that were closer than those of family.
Once his training at the temple was complete, Izel spent nearly a dozen years working as a recruiter for the order on various planets throughout both the Compact and the Union, which is where he met his wife Amoxtli. They were eventually stationed on Tlapan, home of the the Mixcoac Shipyards, for several years where he made several friends outside the temple. However, such long term positions were rare and eventually the Temple required him to begin working off planet more and more. On one such mission, Izel discovered some information concerning other psychics trained in Temple ways, but not of the Temple. Instead the were from a place called the Perfect Mirror Academy.
Izel's reason for traveling to Gateway is two fold, one public and one secret. The public reason is to reestablish diplomatic relations with the Perfect Mirror Academy. This is in hopes that, the two communities can share their teachings and bring unity to the sector's psychic community. The secret reason...
"Master Tlaloc?" Izel looked highly confused as an apparently middle aged man glided effortlessly through the airlock onto the ship he and Amox had chartered for their most recent mission. Elders of the Clear Sky rarely left the serenity (and safety) of the Temple on Tecalco except for matters of grave importance, and Tlaloc was Master of Awareness, a title he had held for the last 75 years despite his relatively youthful appearance. "Has something changed with our mission to Xaltepec? The Compact agents are normally happy enough to help us get their people into the temple, thinking it will give them advantage over the Unionists."
The elder simply held up a hand for silence and stared deeply into Izel's eyes with his ancient gaze. Deep within his mind Izel heard the other man's voice, "The mission to Xaltepec will continue, though the beautiful Amoxtli may unfortunately find it unexpectedly lonely. The Council of Elders have other plans for you Izel. Plans that will take you far from here."
Izel grimaced a little as he bowed to Tlaloc and agreed with the ritualistic phrase "The Elders' wisdom guides us."
Description: Roddy is well suited for the camera and he knows it. From his athletics to his handsome face and a personality that ranges from outgoing to obnoxiously positive he has made it his mission to leave the rest of the galaxy with recordings of his more than ordinary life. The world is his oyster and if you haven't met him yet, today is your lucky day. He likes to meet new people and is an adventurous soul in many different areas as well. Faced with challenges and difficulty, setbacks are just another part of his awesome tale. At least that's the persona of Roddy Styx, but the man behind the mask likes to follow that way of life, too. Privately, he still tends to his positive outlook at life, but of course he is not entirely superficial. And that he is sociable by nature is also the truth. Still, in recent days Roddy sometimes wonders where the image ends and the man begins.
Origin: Lur
Backstory:
Roderick Wyoming was born into an already wealthy family on the planet Lur. His hardworking father was a selfmade business man and rarely had the time of day for his son, thus the young Roderick was raised mainly by his liberal mother in a rather pressure-free environment. Since his ealier days already, the handsome boy pretty much always got a chance to do what he wanted and wiggled his way through his general education. Furthering his knowledge in science or developing a sense for business like his father had were never interesting to him, but he liked sports and the arts and especially meeting new people. With his sociable personality he was always among the most popular crowds and as Roderick got older, his hobbies switched mostly to fitness, partying and sometimes having a girl on the side. When Roddy turned 18 years old, his father finally began voicing his expectations, that his son should follow in his line of work. But Roddy wouldn't have none of it. For a while now him and what he considered something akin to friends had been filming and broadcasting their escapades in the lurian nightlife and under the moniker Roddy Styx he had become something of a popularity amongst the young adolescents on Lur. So despite his father, Roddy decided to grab life by the horns and make a career on his own. Ironically like his father did before him, but that wasn't any reason for Roddy at all.
So for the first few years Roddy lived with the financial backing of his mother, that had managed to convince his father to let his boy take a play at his dreams. The daring Roddy Styx would shoot where action was to be found and generally did a lot of things, where the people that watched his life could live vicariously through him. From stunts to meeting other popular people and generally getting himself in situations that would be interesting to witness second hand - he may or may not have ridden an alligator Video evidence suggests he totally did!once - against his fathers expectations Roddy managed to garner a larger crowd of people that would watch his content, growing with every passing year. Things were going well for Roddy Styx, but to his detriment he couldn't see the shadow on the horizon. By his 21st year his exploits were becoming exceedingly outrageous and some of the stunts he pulled might have happened being not entirely uninhibited. Honestly, some of the stranger things Roddy couldn't even remember after the fact. Going on his memory alone, he figured afterwards that he couldn't recall about one full month that was missing of his life. All of this gained him popularity all the same and he never did anything illegal, at least on camera, but for his father all of this frivolity had been the last straw. He wouldn't indulge his son anymore, who in his mind didn't even follow an actual career. Thrown out and without further support from his family, Roddy would now have to make do on his own.
But against all odds, Roddy did manage all by himself and easily at that! He had become famous enough, that marketing and sponsoreships managed to keep him afloat and with all the people he knew on Lur and some favours he gained he managed to make an even bigger name for himself. After a private meeting in which his mother spoke to his conscience he dialed back a little on the more selfdestructive or especially dangerous acts, but his renoun would climb all the same. As the years went by, Roddy's sense for adventure only grew and with all the success he had, he could picture even bigger things for himself. He was living in a spacefaring age and there was so much to explore that had been lost in space after the Scream; Roddy Styx was bound for a bigger place than just Lur. At the age of 26 he finally managed to make the aquaintance of one Vincent Volos, shareholder of the Lurian Interstellar Communication Hub. As a fan, the much older Vincent was easily convinced that they could do so much more with the name Roddy Styx and together they made a plan to take Roddy and set him on a course towards the stars! Vincent's old friend Howard Schneider, a benign merchant of the Karta Trading League, was willing to lend his contacts in various systems and they figured out a way to find people that would transport Roddy's recordings back to Lur, from where Vincent was planning to spread the "Wonderous exploits of Roddy Styx"™ across the galaxy. Now, with his friends encouraging Roddy to make the jump and follow his dreams, but rather staying back on Lur themselves, the charismatic entertainer is ready to face down the comsos all by himself! Unfortunately Vincent and Howard obviously weren't able to finance him a space ship, but with Howard's contacts Roddy was left with some strings he could pull as soon as he got to Gateway. From there, finding a ship and a reliable crew would just be the first quest on Roddy Styx personal and amazing space adventure..
Roleplay sample:
Roddy's day had been glorious. No really, every step of the way had worked perfectly. When he awoke in the motel room, where he had spent the last few nights after he had sold his appartment, Roddy had felt absurdly rested, even though the excitment for this day had left him with maybe four or five hours of sleep, but how often did one start their first adventure in space, honestly? With the credits he had gotten he would have to do some numbers crunching to make the budget work until he arrived at gateway, but who cared. Roddy was sure he could make it work. At this moment, he was bound for stardom in multiple interpretations of the word and after his car had pulled over at the space port, he wasn't surprised to find a crowd that had gathered to wish him their last farewells, for what might become years before they would meet him in person again.
As Roddy made his way through the flashes and cheers, he was grinning from ear to ear. With his small travel-case thrown leisurely over his shoulder he shook hands and took pictures and even though he was on a strict timetable, making the time for his fans and friends had been well accounted for. The fewest of the people he actually knew, but he had seen Nickj, who probably had drawn the shortest straw among the clique, and they waved to each other over the heads of too many people in their way to have one last talk. Having the support of his regular friends was all that counted, he had said his proper goodbyes in a smaller circle anyways. When the tall blonde finally reached the ports entry door, he set his case aside, turned around and gave the people one last glory round. They cheered "Roddy, Roddy, Roddy!" or "Pass over the Styx, baby!" and one he thought was particularly funny, "Make sure you don't die in space, Roddy!" Standing center stage and one step away from getting into the building, where exasperated staff members were already waiting behind the glass door, not willing to let a whole crowd waltz on premise, Roddy gave the crowd the double kisshands, throwing his arms in the air. The crowd ate it up! Really, as he had thought before, a perfect day. He just couldn't help himself and laugh heartily together with the positive energy around him. Just as he was ready to leave into the port, where the festivities would come to an end and strict business would set him on a course to Gateway, he spotted someone on the edge of the crowd, that he absolutely hadn't expected. Mom!
Leaving his case behind at the door he waded through his excited fans, that were absolutly happy that there seemed to be some sort of encore. With gestures Roddy managed to get them to make a passage for him and in a matter of moments he stood in front of the small, but rotund shape of his dear mother. They hadn't met in a long while, and the star of the family was rueful to admit, that he hadn't made an effort to privately say his goodbyes. He smiled down at her as she took his face in her hands. "Oh you, look at you, what are you doing?" She looked obviously worried for her son, but Roddy could easily see from her face, that she wouldn't stand in his way or even try to talk him down. It was way too late for that anyways. He grinned even more and said "It's time, mom! Roddy Styx is headed for the stars, haha!" The audience cheered lowdly as he generously embraced her in his sturdy arms and cheered even louder still, when he went even further and gently lifted his rather plump mother up until her head was about one feet above his. "Roderick!", his mother protested weakly, but Roddy was sure she didn't actually mind. He was going to send her off with a memory and as he held his mother up with just his right arm, he paraded her back to the entryway where he had left his case. With his left hand outstretched and egging the crowd on further, the people were roaring, laughing and applauding, so no actual conversation could be had. When he reached the door he gave one last wave at the mass, "That's my mother!~ Mommy Styx says gooood bye!!~" As he set her down and gave her one last kiss at the forehead she looked still worried but a small smile had crept on her face. With a sarcastic sneer Roddy said just quiet enough for his mother to hear, "Give my greetings to Dad, his son's going to get bigger yet. Bigger than he ever was!" And with a playful wink he picked his case back up, threw it over his shoulder and with a fingergun to the crowd he finally strut through the door. Yup, a perfect day!

Losing a month of his memory had never sat perfectly straight with Roddy, but it took him a few years to finally find an opportunity to do something about it. When the day arrived, that he made the lucky acquaintance with Izel Cozcatl, the budding entertainer was very excited when he learned that he was talking to bona fide Psionic. He convinced the psychic to help him with his memory loss and together they worked on reconstructing the time that was blocked by amnesia and restored it on a chip. The whole process took a few months and over the duration Roddy and Izel got to know each other better and generally kept a positive rapport. Sharing all of his memories of a whole month with Izel was a rather intimite act for Roddy, who usually kept most of his friendships on the casual side, which why he regards the psionic rather favourably after their time together.
All while working on his memory, Roddy also kept working on his plans for taking his craft into the stars. When he learned, that Izel was going to leave the planet at about the same time for visiting the Perfect Mirror Academy, it made for an interesting excuse to coallign their departures and set out on their travels together. While Izel had also trained flying drones for a while, Roddy managed to convince Vincent to gift them a simple camera drone to cover Roddy's life in space, without an additional need for a camera man that Roddy would have to drag around as someone who only followed them as part of a work relationship. Having two more people that he already knew and liked with him at the beginning of his adventure was just another wink of destiny in Roddy Styx' direction!
Roddy met Chimera Gray only by pure happenstance, when one night in the dicier streets of Lur he came upon the scene of one bad ass lady bringing the fight to some shady looking goons, who seemed to just have been on the winning end of a mugging shortly before the woman's intervention. Not one for unfair fights and maybe in part of his own feeling of chivalry, Roddy made the quick judgement to pull some more of his clubbing friends into the fold and talk the goons down, befor things would get bloody. Dirty enough to assault their victim and just a single more passerby, the muggers weren't brave enough to stay for a fight if they had to face even numbers, so luckily they made off without having made their money or causing a further scene. When Roddy talked to the victims saviour afterwards, he learnt that she called herself Mera and Roddy told her how deeply impressed he had been for standing up to those guys solo and how she had handled herself before him and his friends had stepped in. When he learned, that Mera barely knew anybody else onthe planet, Roddy gladly took her under his wing and invited her to join them over at the next houseparty. Clubs would have been too loud for getting to know each other.
Over the next few weeks, Roddy and Mera spent some more time together and Roddy got her to show him some tricks. He was very impressed by her military training, something that he himself luckily never had to deal with, but it was still cool, knowing how to shoot a gun. When the two of them got to know each other a little better, he learnt about Mera's missing brother, incidently another psionic. Happy to help, Roddy quickly shared his connection to Izel, who might be able to help Mera with her investigation. So it happened, that the unlikely trio spent a few more months together, before they all would leave Lur as part of Roddy Styx takeoff. Their goal would still be Gateway and Roddy was happy that he going to have another badass with him to possibly join in his future crew.

Jason has an age old enemy hot on his trail and it takes all his skills to keep avoiding the man and his long reach into the sector. Jason left his last job and made the decision to take civilian transport to Gateway in hopes of evading his pursuers. It was during a youthful prank that one of Jason's best friends (Kaila Reshault) was killed. if the guilt wasn't enough, the father of his friend (Bertram Reshault II) has spent his life seeking revenge. Jason feels that the accident that left him in a coma for nearly a year should have been enough Karma to settle the issue. However, the young merchant has been forced into the dark corners of society by Mr. Reshault's constant character assassinations. Every decent job Jason ever had was ruined by Mr. Reshaults influence. So in order to stay hidden and to keep moving Jason has taken one crappy job after another.
Through his many travels as a Merchant Pilot, Janos has become a huge fan of 'Rockin Roddy' music. He's got all of his albums and watches his personal copies of Roddy's recorded Concerts. On his wall is a signed picture of the rocker that he got from Roddy at one of his earlier concerts on Lur when Janos was looking for work. He and Roddy hung out a bit and caused some trouble before both parted ways.
Janos and Jules first met in the hospital under similar mysterious circumstances (the unidentified Pirate that had attacked both of their vessels and ran) having a captive audience and plenty of time to do nothing, the two became friends. Later the two kept in touch and met for drinks whenever they crossed paths.
Janos heard that the government on Gateway is giving out permits for those who would salvage lost tech from the homes of the rich and famous that died after the Scream. Jason has the burning desire to have his own ship and is willing to do just about anything to get it. Jason hides his guilt and sorrow over the loss of his friend by working hard, carousing or reading. The pilot, who in his youth was a big practical joker, now talks little to others and does his best to keep out of their affairs. He has a wide range of knowledge and when he does go out, seems to be most at home among the seedier elements of society who don't seem to care about his less-than-stellar reputation.
Eventually she found a job as a scout for a member of the Karta Trading League. Janos has contacts with the KTL and has probably met the scout in the various spacer hangouts on different 'gods forsaken' places where only the desperate go.
Then a few months ago she was part of a small crew heading out toward sector 9 when their vessel was attacked by an unidentified ship. They managed to defend themselves and limp back to a KTL port, but during the first volley the cartography array where Jules was working was destroyed. By all rights she should have been killed, but her badly broken body clung to life, and she was transported to one of the medical facilities on Prime. Possibly they met under similar circumstance as Janos has also spend considerable time in various hospitals to correct his problems in the aftermath of a space battle.
@Mindsiege As a fan, the much older Vincent was easily convinced that they could do so much more with the name Roddy Styx and together they made a plan to take Roddy and set him on a course towards the stars!
Janos has connections with the Karta Trading League and is a big fan of Roddy as he has the opportunity to catch up on entertainment news from around the sector.
Character Name: Chimera “Mera” Gray (pronounced Mee-ra)
Description/Personality:
Mera resembles a coiled spring. Neither particularly tall or muscular, her stance expresses the calm confidence of someone who is at home in their own body. She still prefers to wear the gray fatigues from her days of marine training exercises. More recently however all insignia and identifying markers have been stripped off in favor of a more discreet look. A heavy leather glove covers much of her right arm which seems to hang loosely at her side.
Despite what some see as a grim exterior Mera’s, eyes are bright and her smile is quick and genuine. Speaking only when necessary and making the most of the few words she does say is a trait which garnered her admiration during her days as an officer.
Planet or station of origin:
Mera grew up on Gateway with her father and older brother. Gateway’s capital city, with its bustling ship ports and winding side streets, was the backdrop for her childhood. Her father was a busy agricultural scientist who worked long hours. Much of Mera’s early childhood was spent semi-feral among a band of neighborhood children, running, climbing, playing and wreaking general havoc.
Career:
Pre career education: Marine Academy, graduated with honors Term 2: Marine Captain (star marine specialty), successful term and advancement Term 3: Marine Lieutenant (ground marine specialty), unsuccessful term, badly injured Term 4: Drifter (scavenger specialty), successful term and advancement
Basic history of your character:
Mera was never the biggest or the strongest kid in her neighborhood, or the smartest for that matter. She learned quickly though that hitting first and hitting hard was usually enough to convince bullies that she wasn’t an easy target. Her older brother Griffon was another story and, despite being 3 years his junior, she quickly took on the role of protector in their sibling relationship. Griffon’s sudden disappearance when Mera was fifteen years old was an event which dramatically shaped the trajectory of her life. This happened shortly after Griffon began to display signs of Psionic ability, and Mera’s fear that he was taken for use in unwilling Psionic experimentation was a suspicion that she has not been able to shake to this day.
Leaving home for the Marine Academy was driven as much by her desire to escape Gateway as it was the hope of someday being able to locate and reconnect with her brother. The academy was an environment that she excelled in. Never one for excess, her drive and focus pushed her to develop her combat knowledge and military tactics to exceptional levels.
Mera remained a rising star in the Star Marines. As a captain she developed not only her combat prowess but her ability to lead and inspire those around her. Though she still thought often about her brother, she also was drawn more and more into the web of military advancement and hierarchy. The sky, it seemed, was the limit for Mera’s military career.
An assignment to an elite Ground Marine platoon tasked with subduing a dangerous turf war in one of the system’s outer mining planets was further confirmation that Mera was ascending. As a Lieutenant, the troops at her command both feared and respected her. There was little information about conditions on the ground prior to her platoon’s arrival though she felt assured in the abilities of her troops and her own tactical prowess.
Looking back, what happened next may have been a combination of her underestimation of the planet natives and an overconfidence in her own skill as a leader. Either the way the result was the same. She directed her platoon into a slot canyon that had been rigged with home-made explosives by one of the local factions. Half of the platoon was immediately eviscerated in the explosion and the last thing Mera saw as a member of the Marine core was a bright flash and the bloody spray of flesh splattering against the canyon walls.
Months spent in recovery at the Marine corps hospital did little to ease Mera’s sense of regret and guilt, even if the numerous surgeries did mostly repair the function in her right arm. Being discharged from the Marines stung. The fact that it was an “honorable” discharge did little to change that in Mera’s eyes. The one benefit that Mera experienced during her long recovery was to reaffirm her desire to track down her missing brother. She vowed to find a way to probe the system to find any trace of his whereabouts.
Desperate for life back aboard a ship and anxious to put away some extra credits, Mera joined the crew of the first scavenger vessel that would take her. Being a crew member instead of it’s leader was a blow to her Marine size ego, though eventually she settled into to the daily grind aboard a salvage cruiser. A successful score from the Aipaloovik system left the crew in high spirits, though when the captain skipped port with the cargo on their way back to Gateway Mera was left jobless, broke, and no closer to her goal.
In Mera's personal code of conduct, for someone to steal wages earned with blood and sweat represents the lowest of crimes and one that deserves reprisal in kind. The captain's betrayal was not a grudge that she would let go of lightly. With no choice but to return to Gateway in search of more work, Mera's options are bleak and her future uncertain.
Roleplay Sample:
Mera flips her cards over revealing a full house. “Read ‘em and weep,” she says with a grin. The other player, an imposing Aslan with a patchwork of facial scars tosses his cards onto the makeshift table with mock disgust, “that’s the last time I play against you marine. I’m going to be out of credits before we get back to Gateway."
Mera leans back against the bulkhead wall, stretching out her limbs and allowing herself a deep breath of satisfaction. “Listen Kitty, I may be new to this game, but if our haul is worth anywhere near what the captain says it is, we’ll be swimming in more credits than we know what to do with.”
The Aslan (who to most people went simply by the name Rafe) winces briefly, “How many times have I told you, I hate it when you call me that?” However, his frown quickly turns into a grin at the thought of their recent score in the Aipaloovik system. “But if we get paid, you can call me anything you want.” Scratching his head thoughtfully he adds, "I wish he'd he'd finish the deal so we can get moving already, I've had about enough of this one-port planet."
Outside the open cargo door of the salvage cruiser the typical hustle and bustle of the Lurian port was a distant afterthought to the pair’s conversation. She had worked hard, under dangerous conditions, to bring back the salvage haul that they hoped would set her up for years to come. Yeah maybe she’d been just lucky. She knew that most first time salvagers didn’t hit it big, but she did usually have a knack for being at the right place at the right time.
“… Chimera... hey did you here me?” She startles out of her daydream as much by his tone as by the fact that he'd actually used her proper name.
“Huh?” Is her well-worded response.
“Ain’t that the captain getting on that shiny cruiser down the way?”
“Now where’s he think he’s going…?”
They both have the same realization at the same time. Their captain, the man who directed their successful salvage mission and promised equal shares of the profits, was hastily loading up what appears to be several cases worth of credits into an unfamiliar ship.
The table is suddenly overturned and the cards, forgotten, flutter down onto the grimy deck. Sprinting through the crowded port the pair plow through crate toting porters and shove their way across crowded gangplanks. Mera feels the lingering pain in her right side as her body jostles and bumps across the labyrinthine sapce. The two finally clamber up onto the docking platform just as the heavy door of the transport ship hisses closed.
Mera reaches for her service pistol before realizing that she’d lent it to the captain while he was going to the negations. To add insult to injury she thinks she sees him give her a small smile and wink as he pilots the ship away from the dock and out into open space.
“Godamnit” she says mostly to herself. “There goes my future.”
Reason for Traveling to Gateway:
Mera was returning from a scavenger mission to the Aipaloovik system when the ship's captain left Mera and the rest of the crew behind at one of the intermediate starports. She was able to scrape together enough credits for the voyage back to Gateway. She travels there now with the hope of finding more work and tracking down the captain that double crossed her.

Description/Personality: Jules does not have an easy smile, and when she does it rarely reaches her eyes. She's never developed any close friendships apart from her parents, and most of the time doesn't think she's missing anything. Lately, though, she sometimes regrets not having anyone in her life other than her dad that she would call a friend.
She does not possess any extraordinary skills or abilities. She's about as middle-of-the-road average as one can get and after everything she's been through, that suits her fine. She is 6 feet tall and 180 pounds.
Planet or station of origin: Grew up in Sontu, one of the underground cities on Polychrome, and the Aegis Spaceport above the planet.
Term 1 - Drifter/Scavenger
Term 2 - University
Term 3 - Scout 0
Term 4 - Scout 1
Basic history of your character:
Born in Sontu, one of the underground cities on Polychrome, Jules Soellner was the first and only child to two scavengers. A playful and independent young girl, she was very close to her parents but didn't form any strong connections to anyone else.
She was 6 the first time she saw the sky, going to the surface to see her mother off as she left for university. That overprotectiveness clearly came from her mother, because once her dad was the primary caregiver, she began taking frequent trips above ground, going along with her father on his less dangerous assignments. By the time her mother returned to take a teaching position at the Aegis spaceport above Polychrome, Jules was 11 and already had rudimentary driving and flying skills.
She moved to Aegis with her mom, splitting her time between the relative comforts of the port and the harsher conditions of the underground city. Her parents did their best to be together as a family as often as possible, though, and her parents created a strong and dependable foundation for Jules.
When her application for university enrollment was denied, Jules had no interest in enlisting, so her dad called in a few favors and got her a job as a scavenger on Polychrome. It wasn't the greatest job but it was familiar, and if she couldn't go to school she wanted to stay near her parents.
Deep down, Jules still wanted to continue her education. With her parents encouragement, she reapplied and this time was accepted. She moved to Gateway and began studies in astrogation and navigation. She wasn't the greatest student, but she was doing well until news reached her that the Aegis had been destroyed. It was suspected that the explosion had not been an accident.
It took her a week before she could get any word about her family, and when she learned that her mother had in fact been killed it broke her. She lost her housing when she flunked out of school, and disappeared into the tenements of Gateway. It was nearly a year before her father found her, and an equal amount of time before she was back on her feet. He left his job and settled on Gateway in order to be near her.
Eventually she found a job as a scout for a member of the Karta Trading League. Based out of Basajuan, her assignment as an explorer was a good match for someone with her skillset and temperament, and for the first few years she found some level of success. Two highlights of her career were surveying an alien world in sector 104 and secretly mapping out a new underground trade route for her employers. She was doing well, making a way for herself, starting to feel stronger.
She was paralyzed, unconscious and hooked to machines for weeks before her father got word and authorized the surgery that restored her to some modicum of health. And left her in tremendous debt. But although they wouldn't pay for even a portion of her medical bills, she did receive a substantial amount when leaving the merchant's service. It allowed her to pay off her bills, and have some credits left over to book passage to Gateway for a long overdue visit with her father and to pick up the scout ship she'd been given when leaving service.
Short roleplay sample showing your character in action:
"Wouldn't it have just been easier to pay for my medical bills?"
Jules looked at the desk jockey in front of her, her eyes wide at what she'd just read.
"Your contract clearly stated our responsibility should you be injured while in service to the company."
"I'm just saying you would've only been out a few thousand credits. Even this old model s-class is worth a couple of hundred k. Considering the number of years I worked for you this seems excessive compensation."
The man sighed heavily and turned toward his terminal, one gnarled finger agitatedly scrolling through his files.
"Jules Soellner? Based out of Basajuan?" At her nod he continued. "Says here you opened one of our newest trade routes. Very lucrative potential profits."
He looked at her for the first time since she'd stepped into his office, a look on his face as if that explained everything.
Jules did her best not to roll her eyes. She'd liked this job, to be sure, and she had nearly died because of it. It wasn't hard to imagine someone else just signing the papers and running off to claim this bonanza before anyone changed their mind. But getting the ship wasn't without obligations, not to mention the added costs of repairs, maintenance, dock fees ... the list went on. Jules had always tried to live her life without strings, and this ship could be the equivalent of strapping a rope around her waist.
She looked over the specs one more time, pictured an s-class in her mind, in need of a little tlc and a lot of time, then imagined herself walking out of the engine room, the metallic clank of her footsteps, stepping through and seeing the starfield through the bridge windows. The view from *her* bridge.
With her lips slowly inching into a small smile, Jules laid the paperwork down on the desk and signed on the metaphorical dotted line.
