Briggs IC
right-aligned image

Briggs returned from the job at Valkur’s Temple wondering how long the horrors of that day would haunt his dreams. So he was surprised when the nightmares didn’t come. Surprised that the memory of the undead shark-beast did not rattle him the way he thought it should. No, it wasn’t the combat that left him feeling ill-at-ease; it was his choice to guard the fallen ranger that tugged at the loose threads of his mind. Why hadn’t he done the sensible thing and hid in the shadows when the going got rough? What had possibly compelled Briggs to stick his neck out for someone else? If he went out adventuring again, would he end up doing something else gallant and utterly stupid?

And so he began to turn his eye to less bloody means of making coin. He began hiring himself out as a locksmith. The work is slow-going at first, mostly folk with locked sheds and basements and keys that had long since vanished or broken. Those jobs were just a matter of filing down the bits of keys until they were skeletons that would pass through the locks’ wards as if they weren’t there. The gold wasn’t much, but truth be told, Briggs liked the work. He enjoyed the challenge, and the constant fiddling and filing kept his hands busy.

After about a month, the work became more lucrative. It turned out, even the wealthy got drunk and locked themselves out of their homes, and Briggs, with his outsider status and noble birth, was just the kind of man to treat such incidents with discretion. On his final day of locksmithing, he disarmed and unlocked a treasure chest that adventurers had brought back from their latest jaunt into some hostile locale. By the time his work was done, Briggs had amassed a decent nest-egg, and yet being around adventurers once more put the itch back under his skin.

With the coin he had earned tucked securely in a well-tied pouch, Briggs cursed himself as he walked to the weaponsmith. Locksmithing has been steady, respectable work, and so of course Briggs couldn’t stick with it any longer. It was time to take his chances in the Bloody Unknown yet again.

Snap Kick
right-aligned image

The otherworldly hovercraft, Valkyrie, skimmed over the surface of the sea between Westhaven and the rivermouth. The water was glassy today, with light ripples that glinted in the late morning sun. Gulls and terns wheeled and cried behind the ship, the passing of which agitated the water's surface, drawing small schools of fish close enough to be prey. Even a year ago, the sight of those free-spirited birds would have disturbed the psyche of Valkyrie's pilot greatly with an agonizing yearning. But not now.

Snap Kick, the kenku monk, sat reclining in the front bank of Valkyrie's seats, his right arm resting along the back of the bench. A scarf flapped over his left shoulder, and as always he reveled in the feel of the breeze ruffling the feathers of his face. A pair of specially-fitted goggles protected his eyes from dust and any unfortunate collisions with the dragonflies that were migrating offshore this time of year, and his leather cap kept his head feathers free from the droppings of the well-fed seabird flocks all around. Several chests full of items from the smiths of Westhaven sat in the rear of the ship, bound for contrivances that their creators didn't understand or care about.

The marshes of the river delta approached at last, and Snap Kick's reverie was broken by the serene female voice of Valkyrie's artificial intelligence. "Vessel approaching." The monk craned his neck and then made several enthusiastic clicking noises in recognition, before leaping to his feet and striding to the port gunwale. About 100 yards off the bow and approaching rapidly, a large dugout canoe plowed through the gentle waves of the estuary. There were two figures aboard, sturdy looking lizardfolk clad only in broad-brimmed straw hats. As they got within hailing distance, one of them called out in Common, "The sssun shine on our meeting." The monk waved in return. For reasons Snap Kick couldn't understand, Valkyrie's hovering capability became unreliable over water that grew too shallow, and with the ever-shifting sands in the estuary due to currents and storms, it took local knowledge to navigate the channels into the river. So by now he was very familiar with the Delta Masters. Still, there was the customary exchange. "Do you require guidance through the channelsss?" Snap Kick paused for a moment in thought. Then he called out in a matter-of-fact male voice, "I knew exactly what to do. But in a much more real sense, I had no idea what to do.”

This caused a lengthy, hissing conferral between the two very literal-minded lizardfolk as they parsed the monk's meaning within the context of their previous encounters with him. Valkyrie wasn't capable of rolling her eyes, as she had none, but somehow she managed to convey a general sense of eyeball rolling with her tone, "Please lead us, Delta Mastersss." Snap Kick winced at the ship's imitation of their guides' accent, but he had never conceived a means to let her know that it could be offensive and was not necessary for effective communication. So he just nodded in agreement. The lizardfolk appeared unphased, however, and they simply nodded and maneuvered close enough for Snap Kick to toss the toll payment over.

That done, they rowed ahead, and Snap Kick gave the command to follow them on the treacherous path through the shallows.

Lt. Baxan Arthic
left-aligned image
Credit to Caio Santos, https://www.artstation.com/artwork/wnLOw
Returning to town in the dead of night made Baxan feel a little dirty and dishonest, like a skulking rogue or criminal. What helped mollify his mood was the coin filling his pockets. He was happy the job had gone well, but he needed to take some time to reflect on his time as a mercenary. Was this his new lot in life, going from odd job to odd job for pocketchange? Yes, it had felt good to win, to fight in the name of Tempus... but now he had nothing. He needed to put his hands to work, to leave a mark. He wanted to learn.

The next day, after purchasing some mason's tools at the general store, he signed up to apprentice as a stonemason. He had swung a hammer to kill, to destroy - now, he would swing a hammer to build, to create. The work was hard and his hands calloused up quickly, but he could feel he was starting to get the hang of it.

At the end of three months, his coin purse was light, and he could no longer afford any more training. He took a month off to do some odd jobs around the city - killing the occasional goblin, or spider, assisting as a caravan guard - whatever paid. At the end of the month, he had enough to take on another month of mason apprenticeship. He could feel his grasp of the profession coming along, but it would take some time before he was proficient enough to call himself a full-fledged mason.

Colton Vander
right-aligned image

Colton decides the forego a week of carousing post-adventure. The last time he did it, it was unmemorable. In the sense that he really has no recollection of what happened, only of where he woke up the next monring.

Plus, he now has a family to take care of... a family of cats. To be fair, one of them is technically a Tressym--a winged cat who is now his familiar--but she came with a litter of kittens, and made crystal clear that this was a package deal. With the intelligence of a human, mixed with a cat's attitude, the orange-and-white Tressym was not shy about making demands or sharing her strongly held opinions.

Colton ponders whether he should have just gone with an owl. I bet Wizards with owl familiars don't get nearly as much backtalk.

I heard that! How about you spend less time thinking about owls and more time making sure that dinner is ready on time.

* * *

Since a greater portion of his disposable income is now going towards milk and fresh sardines, Colton decides to put his head down and work before his next adventure. His business is an eclectic mix of library research and scriptorial services. Unfortunately, there are fewer adventurers as compared to last time who need him to research the locations of old tombs or how to break ancient curses. Instead, he somehow end up mostly using his calligraphy skills to prepare wedding invitations.

Practicing a Profession and Religious Services
left-aligned image

Over the years, Grauf was able to sell a couple of his maps to travelers. A few needed revisions, but a great wealth of them were undocumented locations underground and underwater not easily accessible to man. So, as he traded copies the fish man made quite a great sum.

On his return to the city of Westhaven, however, knowing it was now time again to brave the frontier, his demeanor was rather craven. Certainly, the lands to the east were fraught with peril, but never did the fish man have such vivid nightmares as when he ventured on the frontier.

Prayer, steady and patient, allowed the magick weaver to regain a bit of his calm. Offering scavenged incense to the gods of nature, curing the ails of withering trees, and replanting flowers in the Westhaven Cemetary brought Grauf a serenity that would aid him far more than sword or coin.

Björngang, son of Mótsognir, of the clan Blackhammer
right-aligned image
Björngang felt the burden of the Shadow weighing heavily upon his shoulders long after their adventure at The Witches Cottage. They had found Redblade, but too late for he was dead. The dwarf's mind remained bent on dark thoughts, and visions haunted him in his dreams, if not even during his waking hours.

Those who fight the encroaching darkness can work on removing the taint of corruption within themselves. Heroes belonging to different cultures resort to different methods to get rid of corruption: Dwarves usually turn to the forge to burn their frustration smiting the red iron on the anvil. So for 8 weeks Björngang worked at the forges of the smithy's around town.

After repaying Pavel and re-summoning Sturmaz, Orgahr found himself broke. Again. He was too new in town to even think about making money by shanghaing anyone. No ship masters to sell them to around here. And in a place crawling with sell-swords and oh-so 'noble' adventurers it would be more dangerous than attacking the necromancer in their lair turned out to be. They had recovered the body of the fool who had gone off alone, smashed a small army of skeletons, but then turned and retreated when literally at the door of the witch's cottage. Adventurers; who can tell how they prioritize? But I knew that life would get complicated when I started in this branch of The Life.

Piracy or brigandry not being an option, Orgahr spent a couple of months as a proficiency in Water-Vehicles and Navigation-Toolsriver boat man, serving as both guard and crewman. The bargemaster had been more than hesitant but was short handed for a load of woven products, while the wizard's fang-filled, smiling mouth insisted it would be his pleasure to serve in the crew. The master took the lesser chance and it worked out well for him. The githyanki considered ways he could reassure the excitable, pudgy human but decided against it; the job was only for a few weeks after all. Let him sweat.

And not a week and a half after the trip had begun, river brigands had tried to hijack the boat--with the connivance of another of the crew. The wizard's presence made the difference between life and death for most of the crew that night. But why so much risk over..."Unpack the clothes and blankets. Now." The bargemaster started to protest. "Excuse me. I forgot my manners. Please unpack the clothes and blankets, right now, sir." Some flames danced in the palm of the glowering githyanki's hand as he stared the bargemaster in the eye. Said worthy quickly saw the path of wisdom after that.

As expected, the ship was smuggling. Orgahr found mink pelts and gems hidden among the cargo. "Sir, it occurs to the surviving crew--myself included--that a more equitable division of this venture's profits are in order."

OOC: Orgahr makes an impressive 204gp for his two months of work.

Larus takes quickly to tinkering and begins to craft all sorts of items. He starts on making a mess kit. Then a second. Then many. Next he tries his hands at a signal whistler. Then another. Then many. He easily switches from a whistle to a bell. A small bell, along with a long thin wire, to use as an alarm within a room, at a campfire, down a passage, etc. He makes another. Then a third. then many. A small folding shovel is next. It takes a few tries before he finds a design he likes. A folding saw follows.

IC A New Perspective on Life
Returning from their mission to retrieve Redbeard's body, Pavel found himself with a new perspective on life. The horror of The Wine Cellar had purged the horrors of seeing the man he was supposed to protect dead. In contrast, the fights at the Witches Cottage had given the former bodyguard new confidence in his skills. In particular, the Witches Cottage had taught him that the true Warrior had access to a wide variety of tools.

Pavel's training led him to develop a Pavel learns three battlemaster maneuvers.variety of tricks of the trade. In an interesting turn of events, Pavel learned the Cobblers trade. For it might be said that an army marches on its stomach, but an army literally marches on its boots.

During the day, Pavel returned to the profession that had given him so much solace when he was recovering from both the scars of his failure to protect his liege and then the nightmare that was The Wine Cellar. Pavel busied himself hammering out a wide variety of orders from horseshoes for the Scarlet Legion, to swords and axes for the adventurers in town, to custom orders for a few of the wealthier artisans and nobles. However, Pavel had his mind set of the craftwork that would take him from Journeyman to Master - a set of plate armor. However, the cost of the material alone meant that he would need to take another journey into the Wilderness.

Björngang, son of Mótsognir, of the clan BlackhammerThe dwarf caroused for a while. He met a fellow dwarf that was a mountain ranger. The two became fast friends. After a while they came to the subject of sneaking. Björngang had to admit he wasn't very good at it. After many ales, the barbarian was able to convince the ranger to take him out for a season and to learn the ways of being silent and invisible.

Morgan
right-aligned image

If Morgan's first visit to Xyco had opened her eyes to how difficult her personal destiny was to obtain, the second visit had gifted her with far more inspiration than the gold that she had taken away from Hammer's mission of looking after her creation named Valkyrie. Not only had the cleric of Umberlee been able to prove herself in front of her gods when she had beaten down the hunter's created by the wonders of the Trinity, but having realized how removing herself from the rivers and ocean around Westhaven had stunted Morgan's own strength, the primordial woman returned with a heart strengthened rather than shaken. The daughter of the waves would likely never learn to grow comfortable with riding Valkyrie, but in saving the construct she had grown more comfortable with herself again. She had realized that to succeed at her mission, to achieve greatness and renown for her tribe, she needed to not only hone herself, but she had also to take care of her spirits in a way that losing her brethren had made her forget to do. If she had ever really known how. The memories of a bay that didn't exist anymore had made Morgan grief when she had been near the water, but the ocean's element was in her nature as a primordial, yet even more so inside her heart in a way that she had not understood before returning to and from Xyco. And while the Trinity had also shown the water genasi that corrupting herself for her mission was not a way that was meant for her, it had blessed her with a magical artifact that would serve to make Morgan's memories into her strength, rather than her weakness.

When Morgan had reached Westhaven all those months ago, when she had slunk out of the water and onto land, she had griefed the memories of the dead laying behind her and the memories she had of her weakened self. Griefing how she was now alone, how she had lost her tribe and become a waif without a pack. The genasi had felt as if the faith in her gods and her duty to the dead were the only things holding her upright, and in those weeks it had certainly been true. But now, returning from her last adventure, Morgan felt like the burden of those feelings had been rinsed off by hope. She was still the last of her kind, but the adventurers that she had met along the way had shown themselves faithful and empathetic allies. She had not yet properly shared the loss of her own people with them like she eventually had to, but if she joined with those walking the West Marches for their own purposes, then Morgan now knew that she didn't have to be without a pack. And even of greater import, by realizing that denying her memories had made her weaker, Morgan had found a trigger to rethink her position among the land-living creatures of Westhaven. The first thing that she did after returning to the city was turning to the harbor, where she looked across the scenery of what a civilization unlike her own had been created. And while it wasn't beautiful, the ocean behind the walls and vessel still was. The ocean had been her home, and even if the peculiarities and especially the forests on the other side of Westhaven's walls called to her as the creation of Silvanus, this cleric's home was the water. Umberlee might be placed underneath Silvanus inside the pantheon, but in serving the Wavemother lied Morgan's strength. Her duty was her strength, and the memories of her past were her duty. Morgan looked at the metallic glove that decorated mostly her fingertips and left most of her blue, webbed fingers free. The interface to her holographic instrument. I have never been good with words that did not follow the surety of my deities' strength or that served to express my ability to heal and care. But with this... I now hold a magic that will allow me to replace my words with the weight of my memories. And this realization was not only strength. It was also beautiful to Morgan.

Across the next few months, Morgan prayed and worked. Her retreat from joining the next great adventure ended up taking longer than she had initially imagined, but the primordial woman realized that it was time that she needed for herself. Reconnecting with the ocean was something that came with a mixture of feelings of both hope, nostalgia and grief. But to hone herself, she had to complete herself, and the ocean was a part of herself that was so big that Morgan knew she couldn't go without it. This time Morgan didn't waste her efforts on gathering golden metal by taking petty jobs that would only serve to tax the patience that she needed in other places. Instead, the blue-skinned woman familiarized herself with Westhaven's harbor, but also she maintained to go hunting as far out as it was safe in the territory surrounding the city. The Oakfather and the Wavemother posed different poles in Morgan's faith, but the water genasi had always found her center in following both of them. Among the trees she awoke to powers that were of a druidic nature, but when it came time to create a druidic totem to harvest the magic that didn't require Umberlee's blessing, the primordial cleric chose one of the few mementos that she had brought from under the sea, her staff as the tribe's speaker, covered in white seashells and housing small treasure that connected her to the forces of nature. Awakening to this gift that was a union of two deities, Morgan realized that she no longer required the metal warhammer that she had bought for her adventuring. And after seeing how Xyco's minions had been corrupted by their own blades, using the power of her magic to support her hunt appeared to Morgan like a step in the right direction. But hunting and contemplation was not the only reason for staying away from adventuring as long as the hunter-gatherer did. She had gained the inspiration and the magical tool that would allow the lone survivor to carry out her ultimate duty, to tell the stories of her tribe and the stories of her own glory. The holographic orchestra was able to say through images what Morgan didn't know to say through words. So as she learned to 'interface' with the magical instrument, the primordial woman began to grasp how she was going to fulfill her life's purpose. And so she began to compose...

OOCMorgan finished her last adventure Call me Valkyrie at May 6th, 2021.
Starting from then, I'm claiming her for additional downtime until July 6th.

Jaeger
right-aligned image

After their mission at the Thomas estate was concluded, Jaeger had managed to have a short talk with the vampiric member of the Scarlet Legion, the officer called Shamena. While the calloused woman didn't speak openly enough to eliminate the worries that Jaeger was harboring about the vampire noble Annette Thomas, in her own way Jaeger had felt that Shamena had tried to explain to him that he needn't go to war against the noble, seeing as she was using a lot of resources for the betterment of Westhaven. And while Shamena's warning never confirmed that Lady Thomas did not also account for evil deeds at the hands of her own vampire society, it had at least reminded Jaeger of the kind of position a noble was also want to take in the feywilds, beyond the judgement of the populace and strong enough that their whims and quirks were law. And while in his time in the prime material plane the centaur warrior had already familiarized himself with a different kind of justice that betrayed the indifference of thos from his homelands, for now Jaeger had to rethink his stance on whether Annette Thomas was someone he should take up arms against. Either way, he meant to heed Shamena's advice and to stay clear of Thomas Manor. For now.

Over the course of the next weeks after Rophain's body had been delivered to the Legion, Jaeger sought out Shamena a few more times to learn more about what it meant to be a vampire, and if they were a kind of undead that were different from the senseless, hungering undeath that his father once taught him to hunt and to extinguish. Just looking at the legionnaire told him that they were different, but he sought to learn more about the how. While Jaeger spent had been directionless after stepping off the boat and familiarizing himself with Westhaven, after the adventurers with his team in the Seneschal's underground garden he now had a purpose to work forward, though not one he was dedicated to entirely. Learning more about vampires and the extent of Lady Thomas's creature's doings inside the city was difficult with the means that the centaur chose to employ and for a while merely rumors that seeded doubt were the only result of what Jeager sought to learn. He stayed away from the manor, as had been suggested, but his efforts towards research on the side of simply living inside Westhaven weren't very fruitful. One thing was clear though after his last venture in chase of the villainous and mad poisoner Rophain, martial might and armaments would suit him on any further adventure, especially if he was going to face an old evil eventually. That notion had occupied Jaeger's mind in the past, but very quickly the wild warrior had been reminded that strength begot the power to stand protective in front of others. No matter if it was the strength of one's four legs, of the arm wielding the ax or the metal that clad one's body in the end.

During his life in Westhaven, Jaeger also began inquiring how he would find better armor in the end, which brought him to the districts that were under the dominion of the Izzet Guild. Tireless they worked towards the upkeep of Westhaven's impressive walls, but also the construction of houses and homes, as well as weaponry and interesting cases of advanced engineering were within their wheelhouse. Through serendipity Jaeger made the acquaintance of one particular Izzet engineer, one gnome that was known under the name of Zook. Still new to the city and looking for companionship Jaeger kept around to learn more than just about Zook's skills in the smith, and over time he learned that the engineer had his own aspirations on joining the life of adventuring. The centaur was as happy as always to find a kindred spirit even within one so different to himself, and they started to make plans to go adventuring together. In time Zook would aid him with custom-made armor to accommodate his equine body, and at the same time the more experienced adventurer Jaeger would show him the ropes and use his strong body to enable his severely smaller companion. Not one to lightly accept gifts by the remains of tradition from his upbringing in the feywilds, Jaeger began supporting the Izzet guilds construction work by using his strong body and four legs for moving gear and materials around. Additionally he began raising funds for his new armor by applying the herbalism he had been taught those years ago when he had still been with his herd. This was how Jaeger spent a full two months in the end, learning more about the city, making and deepening new acquaintances, and working to prepare himself for the eventual worst. Until it was time to follow Zook out on the gnome's first adventure in the field. Jaeger was quite eager to lend a hand before he even needed to be asked.

Confor sat by the fire, drinking his ale and scowling. Though no one else could here it, he was having an argument with his mystic patron, who did not approve of researching the vampire, Lady Ann Thomas. <…so no, I’m not going to facilitate this for you. What is wrong with you, wanting to challenge a vampire!?> First, I don’t want to fight such a creature, but if it is taking over Westhaven, I had better know what I’m dealing with! Besides, do you really think the paladins are just going to forget about this? Anything done to them will splash on me. <Hmph. What if you went to the undead and offered your fealty?> Oh, you’d like that. Here’s a question though; what if they decide it is safer to kill me? And how can I perform your ‘errands’ if I become an undead’s thrall?

Gnarlus did not respond immediately, and Confor hoped his patron wouldn’t push the matter further. He would prostrate himself before Lady Thomas if necessary to save his life. But she was a greedy oppressor of free-thinkers, from the ex-blackmailer’s point of view. Anything he could do to resist her without getting killed was up for consideration. Or, he could leave Westhaven; the pact with Gnarlus said nothing about helping a vampire undermine a society. If anyone undermines the nobility of Westhaven, I intend for it to be me, or the Old Fiend can renegotiate. <All right, boy. I have tasks for you to perform in this land, so I can’t let you leave. I’ll grant you eldritch sight, though I don’t think it will be as helpful as you hope. The illusions, on the other hand, will be very useful for what I need from you.>

So the warlock attempted some research but soon found himself frustrated. Confor wasn’t as clever as he believed he was; if he had been he wouldn’t have needed a warlock patron to develop magical abilities. His special skill sets from his days as a thief, con man, and extortionist did not lend themselves to research, particularly since he was hampered by the need to be cautious. Two attempts to steal information from private libraries almost ended in disasters. He gave up the research angle fairly quickly, and focused on practicing his performance skills to make a little coin. With a little trial and error he developed a jester and juggling act that proved quite popular.
