Jackson Elias, Folklorist Jackson is a writer who has authored many books, mostly on the subject of strange and often violent cults. His books on the bizarre demi-monde found throughout the world are rational (if sometimes a little lurid, something Jackson attributes to his publisher), and Elias is a lifelong skeptic. Often taking folk tales as his basis, Jackson travels the world from one locale to another, investigating rumour and folk legend, and uncovering the often much more mundane groups of deluded cultists. His most famous book, Sons of Death, uncovered a modern Thuggee cult in India, while others have examined Mayan death cults, Amazonian headhunters, and his latest, The Hungry Dead, released in 1923, exposes the survival of a modern day Peruvian and Bolivian death cult, said to have begun with the arrival of the conquistadors. It describes the cult as a very small, purely human and mundane death cult that has since fallen foul to a deadly cave-in at the old mining tunnels they used as their base. Jackson travels extensively, and has no real permanent home. An orphan from Connecticut, he can usually be reached via his publisher in New York, Jonah Kensington, at Prospero House if you need to get in touch; more often, a letter, postcard, or telegram reaches you from some distant land with an often cryptic comment. Of average height and medium build, Jackson is an African-American man of about 40. He speaks several languages fluently, is social and outgoing without being over-ebullient, always punctual, and not afraid to stand up and be counted when he needs to act. You’ve seen him being fiercely loyal to his friends, amongst whom he counts you, and despite coming from a poor background, is almost scarily intelligent and well-read, being entirely self-taught. His habitual grin and pipe hanging out of the corner of his mouth (except when he uses it to gesture to make a point) and somewhat sardonic humour are always on display and often disarm those around him. Having spent time with him, you can see how he gets cult leaders to open up when interviewed.

Bethany Rahner, Artist Bethany Rahner is an artist, a widow, and a remarkable woman currently living in Manhattan. She has made a name for herself debunking false spiritualist mediums. Nothing seems to really faze her, and despite being really quite sociable, you get the feeling that she still feels a deep sorrow within her. She is very perceptive too.

Dr Garrett Higgins, Natural Scientist Dr Garrett Higgins is a natural scientist and medical doctor who was a field medic in the Great War, but has since devoted himself to the search for rare plant and animal specimens that might lead to medical advances. Indeed, in recent years he has made several discoveries that have led to a modicum of fame in certain naturalist circles. He possesses a rigorous scientific mind, but is also no stranger to the wider world out there, although at present he is working out of Miskatonic University, in Arkham, Mass.

Dr Isadora Serrano, Archaeologist Dr Serrano is a distinguished scholar of antiquities from Madrid, with a passion for unearthing the past. She has traveled to almost every continent in pursuit of her studies, and shows no sign of stopping anytime soon. She has as keen an eye for detail as she does a dedication to her calling.

Delilah St Claire, Debunked Medium Delilah is, or rather was, a charlatan, who made a name for herself conning the rich and gullible by professing to be a medium. Brought low by Jackson Elias and Bethany Rahner, who exposed her as a fake, Delilah was forced to abandon her pretense, her reputation in tatters. Since then, she has kept a low profile, and is looking to use her skills as a researcher and interviewer to a different use. She is skilled at reading people, persuading them to listen to her, and taking note of what they say.

Armas Taynan, ex-Bodyguard A fairly recent immigrant to the US, the Filipino Armas Taynan has a dark past, having been involved with a murderous cult led by a man who set Arman against his personal enemies. Having escaped the cult at great personal loss, Armas now seeks to find his lost daughter, and to seek redemption for his past mistakes. A man of great physical strength, Armas also has an almost supernatural sense of his surroundings.

Alexander Datsyuk, Ship's Mechanic and Handyman Born to Ukrainian parents, Aleksandr spent his youth in the Great War, both on the field of battle and to the rear of the front lines, where he spent most of his time digging the many graves that the war demanded. Since then, he has mostly kept to the sea, deep within the hold of some ship or other, in dark, cramped conditions perhaps reminiscent of the graves he managed to evade himself. The fact that the conditions are also hot as hell might make a lesser man worried for his afterlife, but Aleksandr shrugs it off, like most things, and gets on with his labours.

Dennis Winslow, Drifter A broken man, Dennis lived a normal life until The Event. With time and alcohol, some of what he saw has faded from memory, but sometimes, when the angle is just right, when something shimmers just at the right frequency, when the reflection gleams just so, those things are brought back to mind again. Wherever he goes, these things follow him, from mirrors, windows, pools of water, even when staring down at the dregs in the bottle. Most think him touched, or simple, imagining things that aren't there, and some treat him kindly, but few do so for long. There's just something off about him. Those who do stick with him make a friend for life, though.

Dalton Valentine, Explorer Dalton was a member of the elite, went to the best schools (including Yale), and seemed set to follow in his father's footsteps, if perhaps a little more inebriated as he did. That changed when he was kidnapped in mysterious circumstances. It briefly made the scandal sheets when his father refused to pay the enormous sum demanded for his safe return, and many thought him dead, another scion lost to dissolute practices and misadventure, but he confounded all observers by reappearing after a daring escape. Since then, revivified by his experience, he has mostly eschewed the parties and society that he once frequented. Cut off from the family fortune, he has taken to the hidden parts of the world, where man (well, white men, anyway) has not trodden before. Embracing this new life with the same passion he once had for wine and women, Dalton is now more at home in the wild, and should danger threaten, is a crack shot.
