![]() The relief Ulric feels at having Laufy back isn't diminished, but he also feels chagrined at not paying attention to the battle when he ran to her. Now that she is safe, he can turn his eye back to the battlefield. He hears Darian's warning that the retreat might be a trap and he sees both him and Ilmari fire arrows at the enemy as they flee. Ilmari gives chase as well, which could still be dangerous, especially if the retreat is a rouse. Ulric hugs Laufy once more, quickly, then turns to the others. As he does, his hand trails down her arm and his fingers entwine briefly with hers. "We need to stick together. As Darian pointed out, the retreat could be a trick to pull us into a trap. Ilmari has the right idea. We should harry the enemy while we have the chance, but we need to do it as a unit, so we will be prepared if they launch another offensive." Ulric will pull his spear from the body of the ogre it's lodged in and lead the group after Ilmari. |

Gorthang takes lead of the Shieldwall when Ulric leaves to find Laufey. An enraged Byrda attacks the fleeing foe with a storm like fury. Hacking and slashing, she kills three orcs as she ploughs through them. Narvin and Ceo-Wolf kill two orcs altogether and Gorthang kills two. Vardariannanur watches the orc line break and shoots and kills one White Snake trying to rally his men. He sees another half-orc start casting and promptly kills that one with a shot through the face. He notices Shaylyn climb down from the tree and move to the exposed root. Two of the mismatched armored nuns move towards Shaylyn, while the tall warrior continues chasing down the goblins along with the other two nuns.
Up on the battlements, the first two humans have been joined by four others, three men and a woman wielding a broadsword in one hand and a small, odd looking hand axe in the other,(think tomahawk). One of the men is definitely a highlander. He wears a red and green checkered kilt and carries one of the great claymores the Highlander's are famous for. The two other men also stand out. Both are taller than 6' and move with the easy motion of seasoned warriors. One looks to be a saxon by his hair style. He reminds Vardariannanur of a great cat, like a lion or a tiger. The other is a Dane or even from farther north. He has snow white hair and pale blue eyes. All of them, except the Highlander, fight with two weapons. Shaylyn and Vardariannanur watch them devastate the orcs. The White Snakes never really had a chance. Shaylyn recognizes the white haired warrior as Ruther Vas Baden, he fights in the same style as her Aunt Vaerana. Vardariannanur would notice that too and realize the white haired warriors style as well. By the time Shaylyn climbs down from the tree and Vardariannanur shoots his last arrow, every orc on the battlement is dead. Down in the courtyard, all the fleeing goblins and orcs going to the north end, abruptly stop and fall back as they are forced away from the door by two dwarves and several more humans. One of the dwarves is a female with flaming red hair, swinging a mattock with deadly affect. The other dwarf is dark haired and both Shaylyn and Vardariannanur can tell he is a cleric of Vindalf, a dwarven god associated with poetry, stories, and singing. This group pushes the goblins and orcs back into the rushing warrior with the radiant Sword, followed by the two nuns. Shaylyn reaches the ground without taking a single shot from the orcs and goblins. Most of their archers are either dead or fleeing. Shaylyn kneels down and starts painting her runes. She doesn't see them so much as hears and feels them near her. Two women, one a half elf, kneel down on either side or her and start praying. They are followers of the Saints. Surprisingly, Shaylyn feels their prayers taking hold, invigorating her, pushing energy into her that she can send to the Oak and use to empower the runes. She also feels the Oak responding, hungry and eager for Shaylyn's help and using it's own power to add to the strength of the runes Shaylyn draws. Shaylyn feels herself moving into a reverie like state. She hears chanting coming to her now, the sound filling her with strength and knowledge of the earth and trees and wind she hadn't known before. The Ents and others with them send their strength to her, their knowledge, seeking to use her as a vessel for their power to aid the Oak, to defend and preserve against the blight. When Ulric first reaches Laufey's side, she seems giddy and not hurt at all. It is only when he pulls her to him he feels how weak she is, how she can barely stand and hug him back. She collapses into him, hiccupping with fear and hurt. Her whole chest where the bolt hit her is healed, but the heat of the blow remains, causing Ulric to sweat just from holding Laufey. As her strength returns, she grips him so tightly she will leave marks, yet she doesn't relent, grasping him until she feels able to stand on her own. When she does, she smiles up at Ulric, resting her chin against his chest and whispering over and over, almost to convince herself as well as Ulric, I am here, I am here my love, I am here. Laufey finally loosens her hold on Ulric, stepping back and twinging her fingers in his and saying to Ulric, We do need to stick together, but there is no trap here. This foe is finished. They did not expect a fight, but as you say, we need to kill them all. When done, gather their corpses in a pile outside the Convent and we shall burn them in honor of Odin, Freyja, and Ull. Their blood will give strength to us in the coming days, strength we will need to combat this most dire of foes. Laufey says this as Ulric pulls the spear from the orc and Laufey touches Ulric, healing most of his hurts. The pardon is all mine, says Laufey, smiling up at Ilmari, Twas a fine moment indeed, she says, laughing in a mad kind of way. Ulric then arrives, taking Laufey in his arms and the smiling woman, who a moment before was about 'to take' Ilmari, only has eyes for Ulric. Ilmari and Ulric exchange words and then Ulric is focused on Laufey and Ilmari directs his attentions to the fleeing foe. As he does so, he sees Vilhelm and for poorly armored nuns, charging and chasing the goblins and orcs towards the north door, only to have those foes stop and backtrack due to the coming of more unexpected allies. The door to the south, where he first came through to the courtyard is still open and a number of the foe are escaping that way. Ilmari sees Brogar atop the battlements, his group of archers smaller than before, yet standing solid and firing at the foe. Ilmari doesn't hesitate to attack those goblins and orcs fleeing through the south arch. As he attacks them, he sees Brogar directing his archers to attack them as well. Ilmari hurls his stone and bashes the skull of goblin, killing it. Ilmari follows that up with a heavily armored orc and kills the last of the orcs in the courtyard. There are now only eight goblins left, all our cowering at the north end where Vilhelm and the red haired female dwarf are talking. Ilmari doesn't see Shennen or the boar. OOC- No player took any damage that round, Laufey heals Ulric for twelve points of damage, Darion is healed for ten points of damage. Brogar and his goblin miitia are on the battlements to the south, the new human allies are on the battlements and archway to the north. |

![]() When Laufy first collapses against him, and he can feel the heat from her wound, Ulric is worried and scared for her. Ilmari healed the injury, so he thought she was fully recovered. He turns to Ilmari, hoping to ask him to help her more, when Laufy begins to recover her strength and her grip on him grown uncomfortably tight. He is flooded with relief, even as her grip on him makes it a little hard to breathe, and he rests his chin on her head as she whispers to him, or just herself, shaking off the last effects of the lightning bolt. When she talks about burning the dead he looks across the battlefield and sees that there are only a few goblins left and the fight has gone out of them. "If our side can reign themselves in, it looks like we will have a small number of goblin prisoners. The few who are left seem to have lost their taste for this fight. Maybe we can get information out of them about the remaining forces that are arrayed against the tree." Ulric feels invigorated when Laufy heals him, not only because his injury is gone, but because if she is feeling well enough to heal him, she must be recovered from her own injury. He raises her hand and gently brushes her fingers with his lips. "Shaylyn seems to have the tree well protected for now. Shall we go meet our new allies?" Ulric will jog over to where the goblins are covering, reluctantly letting go of Laufy's hand to take up his spear on the way. If the goblins are not dead, and they have surrendered, he will ask Carlo and Byrda to help him disarm them and tie them up. If they have not surrendered, he will offer them a chance to do so. It is clear they have lost this fight, so there is no sense in slaughtering them unless it's necessary. He admits to himself that his feelings would be different if the goblin that hard hurt Laufy so badly was among them. He will only attack them if necessary. |

![]() Darian slides out of the tree and lands on the ground. Ere he does, he sees Shaylyn healing the tree and he can feel the mighty Oak's strength returning, as well as a bit of the aid the tree is receiving from afar. The way of nature amazes him yet again and he quietly thanks Yavanna for her blessings, knowing it was she who at the dawn of time itself helped put all of this into being. He walks around pulling those arrows of his that are usable out of those he killed. Again, there is little regret in him. After all, these creatures were intent on the most heinous of evil. As Darian goes collects his arrows, he checks on Ulric and Laufey. When he sees how well Laufey is recuperating and the relief in Ulric's visage, he too is relieved. He feared it would be much worse. Then he turns his attention to Byrda. She is like a whirlwind of action and there is precious little left for her to vent her anger on. He walks up to her and grasps her and holds her. "Shhh now, my she-wolf," he says, "Laufey is fine and recovering well. 'Twas quite the scare but now all is well. You were a sight to behold in your frenzy. I shall ensure ye never awaken on the wrong side of our bed nor give you cause for such anger pointed at me." Darian's Elven ears pick up his friend talking to Laufey and hears him say, Quote:

Vardariannanur has watched the newcomers the whole time, noting that all of them fight two handed. The one woman he first saw tumbling through the orcs, fights two handed and has a buckler around her elbow. He saw her block and slash at the same time and she also used the buckler to push or batter the orcs, almost like another weapon. The older warrior with her, carrying the hand axe and flanged mace has long arms and wide shoulders, much like Ulric. These warriors are seasoned and ready and Vardariannanur can tell they don't see Ulric and himself as friends. Looking towards the north arch, Vardariannanur, with his elven sight, sees two half elven archers waiting in the shadows of the hall. One of them is targeting Carlo, the other sights down on Laufey. Two more humans are with them, a cleric of Saint Hardig by his raiment and another Saxon with a long silver sword of Sun elf design. They are crouched and waiting in the dark corridor. Vardariannanur would know Ulric wouldn't be able to see them. Shaylyn was too busy with her rune work and Ilmari might see them, but Vardariannanur didn't really know the druid that well.
Ilmari sees Vilhelm, covered in blood, most of it not his own. Vilhelm looks tired and sad, not exultant as expected after such a victory. Up on the battlements, Brogar gives him a wave. The goblins tricorn hat is still on his head and Ilmari doesnt' see any blood on him. Brogar's face is heavily smudged with soot of some kind. Brogar holds up a small copper horn the size of his thumb, then whispers into it. Ilmari hears Brogar's voice like the goblin was standing right next to him. The Sister is safe. Blixif took a bad hit from Plomfleet as did your elven friend. Plomfleet hit him with a glob of acid. We would have targeted Plomfleet sooner, but I didn't recognize him without his hat. Plomfleet always wears his green hat with a pheasant feather. He wasn't wearing it today. He came with several Black Nail hobgoblins, which is unusual. They used to be foes. We killed one before they all fled. I can't see Plomfleet from here, but there are White Snakes gathering two blocks east of the archway. I count eight or nine of them who are fresh and then four or five who fled from here. We can meet outside at the bottom of the stairs. We should do that after we know who these strangers are. Just because they killed the orcs, doesn't mean they are friendly. We will stay her to support you as best we can. Vilhelm lowers his sword as Ilmari, Ulric, Vardariannanur, Byrda and Laufey all move to meet the newcomers. Ilmari smells their mistrust and sees their readiness to keep fighting. These newcomers don't trust him or any of those he is with. He notices the one woman on the battlements, intensely staring at them as she looks them over and realizes he has seen her before or someone like her. She looks much like the gypsy in the poster, Brenna. Yes, he recalls, Brenna is her name. Doxon and Sgt Oaksheart step out of their alcove. Doxon is limping and leaning on Oaksheart and the good Sgt has an arrow sticking from his left bicep and another in his right thigh. Sgt. Oaksheart is smiling though and gesturing at the nuns even as he says a prayer and crosses himself. Looking over his shoulder, Ilmari sees two more nuns dressed in stained habits stepping into the sunlight from beneath the west roof. Both of them are blinking and crying, happy to have survived. That is when Ilmari sees the boar laying stretched out across the grass, darkened with blood. Two orcs and goblin lay near nearby. He can see the boar is dead, its left hind leg missing. He doesn't see Shennen, but he smells him. Shennen is somewhere under the eaves of the west roof. Ilmari smells two other humans with him, both female and probably nuns. He can smell burned blood and flesh coming off Shennen. He can't tell anymore than that. Byrda is happy to see Laufey walking and briefly hugs her before taking Vardariannanur's arm and whispering, Stay behind me. I will shield you as best I can if another fight breaks out so you can use your bow. I felt the "Raven" take me and she will again if any brings harm to you, Vardariannanur Ulric is joined by the others and they move to meet Vilhelm, Ilmari's paladin friend, and the newcomers. Ulric feels the tension and sees the intense look the dark haired woman warrior on the battlements gives them. She sees him and then quickly moves on, looking them all over like she was looking for someone. Ulric is watching them deftly clean their weapons while moving to position to defend or attack him and his party. The woman with the intense stare and two of the men with her are preparing to leap off the roof at them! Ulric can see there would be no hesitation, no fear whatsoever in this group. He can also tell they are aware of Carlo and Narvin, and Nemela standing ready with their bows and crossbows. They group seems to accept that as they move about. Just when Ulric believes this could end badly in another tough fight, he sees the flame haired dwarf and recognizes her as Lonnie Firehair. She attended his father's funeral with her clan. Ulric has only spoken to her a few times, but Lonnie left a strong impression on him. He remembers she is a member of the Deep Axe clan and his dwarven friend Garth Grimwold's niece. Garth helped train Ulric in how to fight with an axe. As he is remembering this, Ilmari introduces his friend, Vilhelm Dragovitch. Laufey raises an eyebrow as she looks the tall, holy warrior over. She gives Ilmari a skeptical look as she clearly finds the druid knowing a paladin an odd thing. Vilhelm nods at them, giving them all a wan smile. The paladin looks up at the newcomers, but before he can anything, Ilmari starts introducing everyone. Ilmari just finishes speaking when he and Vardariannanur see the red hair dwarf step forward and look them over with sharp blue eyes and a bloodstained beard. She cocks her head and smiles at Ulric. Ulfson, you are far from home. It is good to meet friends on long roads from home. She laughs a bit then, smiling and looking at Ilmari, I guess it is fitting to find you hear with Ilmari Far Walker as we know him. Is Lorawynn Amikiir here as well? Oh, excuse me, I am Lonnie Firehair of the Deep Axes. These companions with me are here searching for a young gypsy woman gone missing, possibly kidnapped by a Father Gildas or a Brother Nonnus. Have you seen her? Or know something of her? Lonnie is looking at Ulric as she talks. The rest of her party has not moved and still stands ready for a fight if Lonnie's friend Ulric proves otherwise. ![]() Then, Darian realizes it is more than that. He continues to scan the area and spies the waiting archers. He notes the looks on their faces and realizes they may be foes. He hears Byrda and a feeling he can't explain washes over him. Her voice and words help to dispel some of the smell and feeling of malice. He looks at her, the feelings in his eyes convey his thoughts and no words need be spoken. Then he whispers to her, "Aye, these folk mayn't be friends. We may be at cross purposes here. Now, stand in front of Laufey rather than me, for she is still weak and an archer from yonder targets her. Know this, if any harm comes to you no raven need take me over, I shall slay any who perpetrate it." Darian looks at Ulric and Ilmari and says in a voice loud enough for others to hear, "There be two archers targeting us with bows from yon shadows, like skulkers in the night. One targets Carlo and one Laufey. I detect no love for us in their eyes. I understand under such circumstances caution, but this feels like more than caution, although misread it I may." Then in a lower voice meant only for his friends to hear he continues, "I urge caution here. If there is any way to hurry the introductions to ease this tension I recommend we do so, and quickly. Ulric, Ilmari, 'tis up to you." He wants those hiding in the shadows and any potential allies for either themselves or the newcomers, to know they are spotted and any attacks will be met with a counterattack. Then, Darian knocks an arrow and looks directly at the archer targeting Laufey. He does not raise his bow, but he knows he can in an instant and send an arrow heading in that direction and proclaims, "I am Vardariannanur, son of Lady Arithel, handmaid to Lady Galadriel herself and Elananurion apprentice of Cirdan. My grandsire was Ecthelion of the Fountain. I have no quarrels with any here." Then he waits for their reaction and for Ulric and Ilmari to act. Finally, the fire haired Dwarf strides forward. Listening to her words, Darian eases the tension on his arrow and completely lowers his bow, hoping she speaks for those waiting in the shadows. He knows there is little love between his people and the Dwarves, though that was not always the case. In fact, it was a Dwarven king and his entourage that saved the Elves, his kin, during the Nírnaeth Arnoediad, known in common as the Battle of Unnumbered Tears. They, alone of all the races there, stood against the great wyrm Glaurung, and wounded him, forcing him to flee the battle and giving the Elves the respite they needed to retreat, though it cost the Dwarves greatly. But this was in an age long past. Still, Darian knew and he remembered.

![]() Ulric notices the tension among everyone as he walks with Ilmari and the others and chides himself for being surprised. He knows better than to assume someone is his ally simply because they were fighting the same foe. The people who defended the tree have their own reasons for doing so, and it's entirely possible those reasons are selfish and self serving. When Darian says there is an archer targeting Laufey he lets her fingers slip from his so he can step in front of her. He had been managing to carry his spear and axe in one hand so he could hold hands with her. Then he slips his axe into his suddenly free hand and looks to where Darian says the archers are and judges the range for throwing his spear. His eyes flick to the battlements and the people there. They are moving like they are relaxed and unconcerned, but he can tell that's an act. They are ready to leap from the battlements and attack him and his friends at any moment, and despite the danger, he respects them for their willingness to do so. He makes eye contact with each of them and nods in recognition, so they know he sees they are willing to continue the fight. Then the red haired dwarf steps forward and Ulric finds he knows her. He was just too distracted by the battle to realize it before. And just like that, his grip on his weapons loosens and he breaths a sigh of relief, knowing that there will not be a battle among the defenders of the tree. "Lonnie Firehair, is it good to see you. I had not looked to see someone from home here, but I am glad beyond words to find you here." Ulric will drive the tip of his spear into the ground so the weapon will stand on its own and step forward and clasp Lonnie's hand in greeting. "I am sorry, but we don't know anything about a kidnapped woman. We were far from here, in another courtyard just like this, only there the tree was a mighty Yew. Ilmari stepped from the very tree itself and told us of the attack on the Oak. Our captain sent us ahead to join the fight and the Yew transported us here, wherever here is. Captain Geen will come when he can. I somehow doubt the fight for the Oak is finished and his presence will be welcome. We would be happy to assist in the search for the young woman as well, if that is possible." When Lonnie introduces herself, and Darian follows suit, Ulric realizes he should also introduce the others. "Forgive my bad manners. Everyone, I know Lonnie Firehair from back home. She and her clan honored us with their friendship and their presence at my father's funeral. Her uncle actually taught me how to fight with an axe. Lonnie, my friends are Byrda, Carlo, Narvin, Nemela, Shaylyn is back at the tree, Darian has done a better job of introducing himself than I ever could, and this is Laufy. It seems like we should all work together to finish the battle here and save the tree. Do you happen to speak Goblin? The few goblins that surrendered might know what forces are still arrayed against us." |

When Vardariannanur knocks the arrow to his bow and sights down on the half elven archer, he sees no movement from either of them. They can see he is going to shoot at them and they don't even flinch, but stay calm and focused on their targets. Still watching them, Vardariannanur can see one is a Moon elf and one a Sun elf. Rather than short or long bows, they both carry composite bows. The half Moon elf's bow has active runes of striking and distance on it. He can also tell as he calls out his name and lineage, that none of these people have a clue what he is talking about. Except maybe one of the men on the battlement. He looks more like a proper knight, wears heavier armor than the others and fights with long sword and dirk rather than an axe or a spear. Vardariannanur sees the man looking at him with solemn, slate blue eyes as he stands there with his long sword and dirk. Vardariannanur sees the man quirk his head to the left, towards the small woman with the buckler. He is certain nothing is said, but the two just communicated somehow. Of that Vardariannanur is certain.
Lonnie Firehair walks up to Ulric and Ilmari uncorking a flask of vodka, taking a small sip before handing it to Ilmari first. Ulric and Ilmari both know since Ulric is known to her, Ilmari has the guest rite of first drink. Lonnie looks up at the battlement and then down the dark hall and Ulric sees two half elves and two more humans step out into the courtyard. One of them wears the tunic of a cleric of the Church of the West, but Ulric wouldn't know which Saint he follows. The cleric too looks up to the battlements before saying anything further. The cleric has slightly darker skin than most and rich, thick dark hair as well. He could be Hispanic or part Moor. The other man on the ground is older and balding and wearing ring mail. His silver sword catches all of their attention though. It is clearly an elven rune sword of some antiquity. Vardariannanur would know it is a Sun Elf crafted blade and not Nolder or Sindar and that it strikes with radiant energy. He can't tell much more than that. Up on the battlements, the Knight like man and the small woman, she is only about 5'1, remain looking down at them. All the others move off, taking up defensive positions and looking around them for more foes. The Knightly man nods at the short woman before looking down at them and saying, I am Guthlac of Breslau and this is Kiarra Nightfall, sister to Brenna Nightfall, who we seek. Guthlac looks now at Ilmari and a slow smile spreads across his face, We are members of the Wolf Stalkers. We came her to kill Gloom Druids and burn out the Blight. We hadn't realized how far it had grown and how much damage the Far Wood has suffered. Trust me Ilmari Far Walker, Ulric Ulfson and Son of the of the Lords of the Fountain, we would have come sooner if we had known. Part of the problem lies within the Church of the Saints and some of it's corrupt brethren who have hidden this in their messages. Brother Nonnus and Father Gildas being among them. Just so you understand, we intend to kill those men without trial, without recompense to mercy and without Orion's blessings. We saw Sir Alcuin and Brother Nonnus as we climbed the north wall into the convent. Sir Alcuin is the knight who leads the rabble gathering outside. There are only 253 of them and most of them are peasant militia. If we engage them in the streets of the convent, rather than on the walls, we can form choke points and kill them in one's and two's rather than having to form a shield wall and risk getting flanked by their superior numbers. We also know the Sea Griffons under Camlin of Wales and Deacon Bregwulf are on their way to Blaud Hill and then here. We can send a message to have them come here first and defend this place. That will warm Camlin and Bregwulf's hearts and drive Critias into fits of laughter. Guthlac has very amused look on his face now and sits on the edge of the roor with his feet dangling over like a boy on a lakeside dock. Kiarra stares at him with stormy gray eyes and calls out, Have you seen my sister? How do you know she is safe? Behind them, they hear a harsh shriek, followed by several bursts of crying. Ilmari would realize the nuns didn't know Mother Superior Agnes was dead. Two of them fall down, crying and writhing on the grass while the two more try to comfort them. The boar walks up and snuffles both nuns to no avail and then ambles over to lick Ilmari's hand. Ilmari can see a hard pink scar all along the boar's left hip and can tell from the soft, baby like skin of the left hind leg, that the leg and hip were regenerated in those moments he had been speaking. Ilmari looks over to where Shaylyn is still chanting and drawing. She is in a trance like state and Ilmari can feel the power of other druids and other sources flowing through her from afar. The Oak is channeling, but so is the very ground around them, using Shaylyn as a focus and point of contact. |

![]() "Still, there is one who seems to know of whom I speak and the times I refer. And 'tis a human no less." Again, almost imperceptibly he shakes his head, this time in wonder. "Well met Guthlac of Breslau and Kiarra Nightfall," Darian calls. "I know naught of your sister but I ken our boon companion Ilmari has knowledge of her. Those who perpetrate the crimes I have seen of late deserve no mercy and what you propose sounds like justice to my ears. I take no relish in dealing death but neither shall I shy from it. Yet, 'tis not my decision to make for Ulric is my captain and it is he I shall follow." Then Darian hears the shriek and sees the nuns. The grief on their faces and in their wails affect him deeply. Such evil has occurred here of a magnitude that is simply baffling to him. "Why would anyone want to perpetrate such evil on the world? And why would his own people play a part." And yet, he knows that if the House of Mole still exists they are capable of evils the likes of which few can fathom. He has been so focused on saving the Great Yew and the Oak of Silvanus that he forgot about the hurts being inflicted on the warm blooded creatures he shares this Earth with. He excuses himself from the assemblage at the gate, "Ulric, I leave this decision to ye and I be bound to whatever decision ye make. Now I take leave to check on Shaylyn and the nuns." Darian first walks over to Shaylyn and quietly asks, "Are ye well Shaylyn? Is there aught I can do to aid you?" Suspecting she is deep in a trance he waits but a few moments for an answer. Then, he walks to the nuns and attempts to console their grief. There is precious little he can offer, but what words he can he does, "'Tis a horrible thing what was done here and naught can I offer to undo it. I ken even knowing we will exact justice upon the perpetrators will do little to heal the hurts of your spirit. Yet if there is aught I can do to help, simply ask it."

![]() Ulric will take a drink from the flask after Darian and then hand it to Laufy. Given how many people there are in the group, he doubts there will much left by the time the flask makes its way back to Lonnie. He is surprised at how good it is to see her. It's not because it's Lonnie in particular. He doesn't know her well enough to bet his glad to see her, even though she is a force to be reckoned with and her skills will be needed in the coming battle. He ponders on it as the flask is making the rounds, and by the time Lonnie has reclaimed it, he thinks he knows the answer. All of the stories associated with the gifts he recently gave we of his home and his family and friends. Those memories have stirred a longing for his home in him that he wasn't aware of until he saw Lonnie. He smiles to himself and takes Laufy's hand again. Perhaps it's not just old memories of home that are on his mind, but also that he now has someone he wants to show his home to and people he would like her to meet. Ulric is so distracted by thoughts of Laufy meeting his family that he misses the first part of what Guthlac is saying and it is only when the knight says his name that he stops daydreaming and comes back to the present. "I must confess, the power of these trees is beyond my understanding, but Darian and Shaylyn have impressed upon me how important they are. As far as I'm concerned, anyone who is trying to destroy them has earned whatever fate they get." Ulric agrees with Guthlac's plan for fighting the forces attacking the convent and he thinks the two of them will get along well, and when Guthlac sits on the wall with his legs dangling over the side, he is sure he is going to like him. He seems to be a competent warrior and he is not al all worried ab out the difficulties of the coming fight. He is about to weigh in on the plan when he hears the nuns shrieking behind him. Ulric turns quickly to look, thinking for a moment that the enemy has found some secret way back into the courtyard, only to discover they were screams of grief rather than fear. His heart goes out to the nuns. He is familiar with battle, and the loss that comes with it, in a way that the nuns hopefully haven't experienced before, yet he was almost overwhelmed when he thought he had lost Laufy. With his one feelings still too raw, he doesn't feel up to the task of offering comfort and he is immensely grateful when Darian goes to offer his aid to the nuns. He watches his new friend walk back across the courtyard with a profound sense of gratitude. Not just because Darian is helping the nuns when he can't, but because he has put his faith in Ulric to make the right decision and to lead them in battle. For as long as he can remember, it has been his desire to not only be a skilled warrior, but to lead others into battle. To be the kind of person that could inspire the kind of trust in others that would let them willingly put their lives in his hands, and to honor that trust by being a good leader. Captain Geen has given him the chance to prove himself much sooner than he ever thought possible, and so far he believes he has lived up to the trust he has been given. Geen has offered him praise when he earned it and that has filled him with pride. But having Darian and the others willingly follow him is a whole different feeling of pride and Ulric vows to himself that he will not let his friends down. "Your plan has much merit, Guthlac. My friends and I are unfamiliar with the convent. Is there any sort of map we could consult in order to better plan the battle? Can most of the streets be seen from the battlements? We will need some way to communicate if we are going to split our forces. Do you know if we have mystical means for that? Even if we do, we should also designate some runners to carry messages in the event any mystical communications are interrupted. I expect Captain Geen and our remaining forces to arrive shortly, as long as the Yew in the courtyard where they are cooperates, and I have a feeling it will. Do you have an idea of how long it will take to get a message to the Sea Wolves and for them to arrive? As you say, most of the enemy is composed of peasant militia, which is good for us. They will be much easier to break than a trained force. Still, their numbers will count for a lot, so any reinforcements we can get before we are forced to fight will be greatly appreciated." |
