Breaking Fast and the Dishing of Information
"Lustful pride! Bertrand smiled and leaned over the table to knock tankards together with Caine. "We heard some about the plainswoman, and how intimidating she was to some onboard. Unfortunately.."

"Not now, Bertie. This is about their witnessing things of import." Mercy cut in quickly, giving the top-knotted monk a look before her father drew himself back into the conversation with Caine.

"The mouse, 'Mouse' said he could feel the taint of otherworldly malevolence roll off of his whiskers at the approach of the beetle." the Elder Gnome paused, considering his words thoughtfully as he looked at Odin's faithful. "He's very well spoken. You've given him a well-deserved education. He also stated that you would have won but something was clearly afoul and afoot. The two boys on the ship confirmed Mouse's retelling."

Anne took Balabayu's pause to eat a few crystalized sugar rose petals before sipping his blooming tea to speak as she jotted notes down in a fine, small script with the glass pen. "Lord Penguinpants was interested in Lady Opal…"

Mercy
"..mangler, Anne. Penguinmangler. He has a reputation of wanting things he cannot achieve getting, but this time..his research may have paid off. So rumours say." Mercy stated, tapping her silver spoon against the table as she peered at Bonzo thoughtfully. Her gaze and questions then shift back to Caine. "Why do you say dark? Everything in magic has value to someone somewhere. Whatever is in question has little to do with monetary value. But who am I? What do I know? That is something for people like Lady Algae. Whatever has become of her. We should have news soon, with the sun coming up."

"Maybe they.." Balabayu started to speak, feathered white brows raised with a quick smile at his daughter.

"Father. The city is not in flames. They wouldn't dare." Mercy made quite the stern face at her father before sighing heavily. Anne chimed in quietly, giving a sideways glance to Arka and Ayumi. "They're talking about whether or not the Guard took her aside for questioning, or worse. How dreadful would that be? I've met her twice before. She is …daring." The teenager sighed as well, in obvious admiration for Emmeline D'Algero. Shyly she looked back over at Mercy who was now staring at her with that stern-eyed gaze you're getting rather familiar with at the table. "Oh yes! Dark. Sir Caine, is this a gut feeling of 'dark' as a practitioner of sacred magic and holder of higher beliefs? Would you concur, that what you believe may have been a 'smuggled' something was 'dark', Lord Bloodbeard, as one blessed by Selune?"

Balabayu the Elder Gnome laughed suddenly and actually slapped the table with his ringed hand. "Ah HA! Smuggled! Emmeline! OH, that is…very observant but I would never say that aloud again, please. And - and…Lord Penguinepantaloons saving anyone but himself is.." Cheeks blushed red, the Gnome laughs away, dabbing tears from his eyes with the end of his long nightcap. As he caught his breath, he straightened himself back up, especially with his daughter having given up, shaking her head and taking spoonful after spoonful of stewed chickpeas and runny poached eggs. "Wait. He said he was going to save everyone? Oh HO! This is the key! This ..!"

"...doesn't explain everything, but is dreadfully important." Mercy clinks her spoon against the bowl as she sets it down. "Why would he have said that? How were you saving the ship? Was he going to fight the sea monster? Was he eaten?" Mercy fires her questions at the lot of you once again, and her last inquiry just sounded hopeful tinged with a dark delight at the thought.

Mercy's focused attention is then focused on Ayumi and what she has to say. Balabayu leans forward to study her as she spoke as well. He exchanged a glance with Mercy and looked…smug. "I told you, Mercy, she'd surprise you. It doesn't surprise me one bit. Scholar Ayumi, you honor us with your sensibleness to hold secrets and to weigh such instances properly. We will uphold this opinion of ours professionally and you have our assurance you have nothing to be concerned about."

"From the community" Mercy added, as though there's an understanding amongst magic-folk of some sort. "The Tritons having friendly relations outside of sea-dwellers is rare indeed. The brand will fade, we're told from the researchers, within a week or two. At least you will not be able to drown in that amount of time. It would give one pause, I'd imagine, if they saw such a mark, since it is so very rare."

Beetles at Breakfast
"We didn't find any obvious bite marks on Sir Caine. Not that I was part of the we. I mean, I was not present at the 'unveiling' and clothes cleaning and…removal." Mercy responded to Gwill in the utmost seriousness of the situation; a situation that may be becoming clearer or not. At least this has gotten Mercy the unflappable, stammering a bit, looking at Caine with a blush forming on her cheeks. "You were taken care of by Selune's faithful, not manhandled by anyone improperly in the least. We are a FINE establishment. Lord Gwillem…" The four foot Gnome took another sip of her bright yellow flowered tea and gestured to Anne that she ought to ready her pen again. The poor girl took a quick bite of folded over flatbread that had a runny egg squished inside of it. After a dab of her napkin upon her lips, she opened her book back up and looked alert and prepared.

"..Lord Gwillem, we did read the ship's manifest and saw that there were a number of warded or magic-radiating crates in the hold, including Arkhathanghinarridh's. This is typical for festival season, and we did see Lord Penguinmangler's crates were noted as holding a very rare serpent that can petrify others, and a young displacer beast, both of which were very dangerous cargo. These creatures were not found by the Tritons, nor would cause their …guardian to attack a ship with the pure insanity that it displayed, as we were told."

There was a pause of silence at the table as the Elder Gnome looked about the table as Mercy slouched a touch in her seat, looking both bewildered and tired. He clinked his cuppa tea with his two prong fork and took note of everyone at the table. "Two expected visitors just turned onto the road to the Cottage. This business with Beetleflyer and Marianna is curious; they normally don't work together. For there to be a beetle onboard that was captured, and that you, Lord Gwillem believe to be of import, and our Dragonborn friend here is a witness to the plainswoman being bitten and …poisoned. It's all strange, and it is only fair for you to know that as of last evening, the plainswoman was escorted and 'transferred' to an undisclosed location, so we heard and couldn't for the life of us understand why." He became quiet for a moment, and considered Ayumi. "Your rapport with the Tritons and their placing trust in you to save others on the ship may help the current situation unfolding out in the bay. Your knowledge and instincts of what happened can very well save you from a fate that's looking for each of you, and it's a fate you would not appreciate."

"Not that they'd remember." Mercy said quietly as the tromping of a horse in a light trot can be heard outside, along with the squeaks of possibly an old or strained cart or wagon.

"No, not that anyone would remember properly." Balabayu said with a grim expression before a mischievous grin lit up his eyes. "You're about to have a festive day, I believe. Don't let any other visitors tell you otherwise. There will be much to do once we receive the news."

Bonzander Bloodbeard | Hill Dwarf | Cleireach of Selune
right-aligned image
Bonzander listens to the conversation with growing frustration. He finishes his second helping and liberally takes a third. Eating has always helped ease his frustrations. He cares not a whit that the others look at him sideways as he piles food on his plate. He looks at the silver fork in his hand and admires the craftsmanship of it, "Dwarven work obviously," he thinks to himself. He listens again as it appears they are going to learn something, and then their hosts draw back, tantalizingly close and yet still no real information. His ears perk up at the mention of Selune. "Mayhap there is another source 'o information we can mine and see if we come up with mithril or coal," he thinks.

Bonzo takes a bite of runny eggs and stuffs it in his mouth then sops up the extra yolk with a piece of flatbread and shoves that in his mouth as well. He makes popping sounds with his mouth as he chomps down on his food and then loudly licks his fingers clean. Quite loudly, in fact too loudly. When all eyes are on him and his atrocious manners he begins, "Seems ta me we be a bit 'o an impasse. We been telling our story and e'ery time ye start to tell us what be goin on here ye stop. Why, even when the lassie here," he nods towards Anne, sops up some more egg yolk with his flat bread, puts it in his mouth and chomps on it a bit, sucking his fingers clean and loudly swallowing his food and smacking his lips, "Gave us a bit 'o information ye stopped her," Bonzo looks and points at Mercy, "and gave her that stern look I be getting particularly tired of. It seems to me ye all be holding back something. Some piece 'o the story...why? What are ye afeard of tellin us?"

Bonzo sits back and looks down at his plate for a second. He's all but finished it. He gets ready to sop up the remaining yolk with the last remnants of his flatbread when he stops and looks back up, "Lookn, I be powerful grateful fer all ye've done fer me and us all. 'Tis no doubt gracious hosts ye've been indeed and owe ye a debt we all do. But I ken there be something ye be hiding from us. 'Tis right below the surface yet I, fer one, cannae quite grasp it. Mayhap less than gracious a guest I be fer being so blunt, but that is me way. So, some few last things will I tell ye and then no more till ye fill in the gaps of the story fer us. Both Caine and I were trying mightily to mend the initial wounds of the boot. Well on our way were we ta fixin her too. All the while Lord Penguinpoop and Lady Da-algae-grower were arguin. Now, whether there was anything evil in those crates I cannae say, but some things passingly strange happened. And the monster that attacked us," his voice gets very low then in a near whisper he continues, "I think it was a Double Entendre." He looks around to make sure that hit home and the looks on everyone's face confirms to him he has. Bonzo continues, "Lady Ayumi must have some ability with foresight fer she talked about the dreaded," his voice goes back into a whisper, "Double Entendre," and then back to a normal volume, "when me, Arka, and a few others were getting ready ta sing and entertain everyone ere the world blew up. 'Twas then she mentioned it and first I ever heard 'o the beast. And when I spoke of it down below Penguinpoop seemed to confirm. So ya can add that to yer story too. Now, I ken 'tis time fer ye to speak plainly and tell us the rest 'o the story while time we still have."

"Speaking of beetles and bites I must apologize to whomever removed Lissandra and Fluffykins from my purse as they may have been a tad aggressive." She gives a small curtsey of apology and then moved on to other things.

"Speaking of apologies I must also indicate another one towards Bonzander as my vocabulary might have been somewhat more Elven in nature. A double entendre is simply a word or phrase open to two interpretations, one of which is usually risqué or indecent. An example of such would be the often used bar phrase 'If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me?'" Her cheeks color slightly red after using the phrase as she is clearly rather uncomfortable doing so.

She then turned to Mercy and said, "Mercy would it be appropriate for us to look into this unfortunate arrest? I would be more than happy to inquire as to the status of Miss Beetleflyer if you would like?"

As Bonzander finishes cleaning his plate to a near perfect shine with his flatbread, almost as if no food had ever been placed upon it, he listens to Ayumi.

Bonzo's face visibly reddens.

Bonzo looks at Ayumi and then quickly looks down. As red as his face was before it's positively crimson now. Sweat starts to form on the Dwarf's brow. Apparently his near death experience in the vast blue briny hasn't washed away all of his shyness around women. After what seems like an eternity he feels the heat in his face die down enough for him to look up, "Ya mean it's no a monster?" He says shaking his head.

"Ach, ya be a dunce at times making assumptions. What was it Da used to say aboot assumptions, 'Assumptions be like arses, we all make em and they all stink.' Aye, that be it," he thinks to himself. He looks at everyone with a bit of embarrassment still evident and continues, "Ach, me youth and inexperience shows through at times. Although a graybeard I'd be by human standards just ootta me schoolin years I be to Dwarves. Please accept me apology fer me ignorance and misunderstanding." This last part he directs to Ayumi.

Arkhathanghinarridh | Brass Dragonborn | Draconic Sorcerer (Bronze Bloodline)
right-aligned image
Arka's eyes went left and right, left and right. Breakfast with the Flowerfoots was increasingly reminding him of the con game with three cups and a pebble, and if Mercy Flowerfoot had anything to do with it, there wasn't going to be a pebble under any of those cups by the time they stopped moving.

The blushing contest between Bonzo and Ayumi was almost as entertaining, but not part of the scam as far as he could tell. "So, er, just to keep this straight in my own mind, you have us, the Guard probably doesn't have Lady Emmeline, someone unknown does have Jorunn, no one has Penguinmangler unless he was eaten, or his magic snake or his octocat, and please remind me again if someone has Lady Beetleflyer or the bug or something that absolutely wasn't smuggled or dark. And speaking of having things, just for the record, would you know if anyone has my crate? If it has washed up, I need to either see it delivered or put in a claim if it's ruined."

Gwill
left-aligned image
Eating slowly, Gwill has only finished half a plate by the time Bonzander is on his third. Gwill pays more attention to Anne than Balabayu or Mercy, believing he would have a better chance of getting a read from her than the other two. Mercy in particular worried him. Gwill felt he was already a piece on a chessboard and Mercy, the Queen. Now he had to figure out how to become something more than a pawn in all this scheming. Before. Bonzander and Caine's lack of discretion bothered him, but now he realized, he could use that to his advantage. He ate a small bite while listening to Arka. As Arka asked about his crates, Gwill turn to Anne, a thoughtful look on his face as he watched her reaction first, then Balabayu and Mercy's.
Gwill watches Anne, considering what Arka had just said. He pays particular attention to Anne at Arka's mention of Lady Beetleflyer.

The Truth of the Matter...
right-aligned image
Mercy
"Some things passingly strange happened…" Anne echoed quietly as she wrote with her jet black pen, smoothly and silently. Glancing up with her wide, puzzled eyes she turned to Mercy. "Am I to include this Double Entendre..." Mercy returned the question with a quirked brow before turning her attention back to the table, pushing her mostly empty plate forward. "We are hiding something from each and every one of you, that is correct, Lord Bloodbeard. We need your accounts of what happened before we can say anything. It's quite simple, really. I apologize for being so …ob.. not straightforward, but I believe one even in your royal position would forgive any misunderstandings when all is said and done."

Her lips curled into a smirk at Ayumi's apology. "Keeper Alex..of the Library…promised to never set foot in here again and was humbled greatly by your Spider. They barely came to an agreement about the ribbon, but…Yes, it will take a while for her to heal on a number of levels. Your apology is not necessary, but if you stop by the Nautilus, I'm sure she would be honored by your presence, Lady and scholar Ayumi."

As Mercy's tone shifted from amusement to one more formal, she considered the Elf's offer and tilted her head in contemplation. "Bertie, the door…" She said absently, and then looked to the Elder Gnome.

" Lady Ayumi, there are a number of unfortunate events surrounding the fate of the Shooting Star. Your assistance is welcome. Everyone's assistance will be welcome once we clear the air." Balabayu said with a nod to Mercy as a smile widened across his expression, sending his thick whiskers curling upwards like a cat. "You'll see that I'm correct, daughter."

As Arka spoke, rounding up his thoughts in an orderly fashion, Bertrand was already at the front door down the hall. Mercy nearly grunts in annoyance as she responds to the Dragonborn. "We have an idea of where the plainswoman was taken, and whether or not she's still alive is in question. What you've said about her being bitten by some bug, and.." Her sharp gaze darted to Caine. "..her having strange powers, that of which have not been elaborated on. Yet. If anyone else had such insight about her, they would also be curious about her."

left-aligned image
Mavros - Library of the Nautilus
A hearty laughter rumbled down the hallway as a number of footsteps approached the formal dining room. Bertrand steps off to the side and gave Mercy and Balabayu a questioning look that was met with a nod from the Elder Gnome. Mercy looked surprised for a moment, and perhaps disgruntled. This faint, tight-lipped expression is met with, "Just in time for breaking fast. I can't believe I've never been invited to the famous Mercy House for such delicacies. Don't mind me." The Human had a welcoming aura about him, with his gingerbread brown skin, and formal attire of dark browns against smooth charcoal black, with thick gold trim. A square-cut jewel of deep emerald green rests against his chest. No creases are in his jacket, and each plump, round gold-knot button is situated in a perfect line. He leaned forward, next to Gwill and asked. "May I sit next to you, Lord Gwillem? Is the attire for this morning casual, Mercy? It seems as if you have rushed your guests, hmm?"

The silver Dragonborn is no stranger to Arka; He's a Captain of the Guard in Yertz'l who tends to be stationed at Harborside. He's seen him before, but has heard more about Jinrakasorlothki Silvertalon through stories that crawl through the streets. Even the Tabaxi seem to like him, which would lead one to think that he knows when to look the other way. The six foot something Dragonborn is a large being, especially in full armor with a greatsword strapped to his back. He makes himself comfortable, moving towards the spread of offerings on the table. "Your guests don't look very prepared to be on their way. With all due respect, Master Flowerfoot, this does not bode well." He smiles, jagged teeth on display as he munched on a handful of salmon slices that he dropped into his mouth.

"Friends, this elegant beast before you is Captain Jin of the Crescent Guard who is here to bring us news, that of which he must have forgotten on his way here from the docks." Mercy said, annoyance clear in her voice though she does force a grin. "Mind your manners, Jin, lest you forget you are in the company of royalty, nobility, one of Odin's faithful, a Key, a Librarian…"

Anne takes up her pen again and slowly writes as though she doesn't want anyone to notice that she is still taking notes. "One of the sacrificed.." the Elder Gnome seemed to correct Mercy in a growing excitement as he looked from Caine to Mavros. "You wouldn't be here unless there was news."

"Ladies and gentlemen of Mercy House.." Mavros started to say with a voice as smooth as velvet.

"..Cottage." Of course, Mercy piped in quickly to correct him. This is positively a habit of hers - correcting and interrupting.

"..Cottage.., of course, Mercy. Accept my apology. Now, Ladies and Gentlemen of Mercy Cottage, I am Mavros, the finest negotiator in all of Bon and have been brought into this horrible situation as a fair arbiter so everyone is compensated to more or less their satisfaction. I do bring you news that due to the ship's unfortunate accident in such a horrid storm, you will receive enough gold and credit in a number of shops in Bon that will see to your comfort while visiting our fine twin cities. This is true for you as well." Mavros bowed his head respectfully towards Arka.

right-aligned image
Jinrakasorlothki Silvertalon, Captain, Yertz'l
"Begging your pardon, Mavros, but they are still in their night clothes except for the Lady, who has been claimed." Jin stated in a rumbled voice, picking up a tankard that he filled with tea and then laughed. He returned the tankard to the table without drinking from it and smiled at Mercy. "You would have had me drink it. You are always so full of jest, Mercy." He continues laughing, tickled at his thoughts.

"It's in the salmon this time. We poisoned the salmon that no one has eaten or been served." Mercy's looked smug as a bug and grinned wickedly at the Dragonborn as he suddenly looked fearful, laughter vanishing like a vampire come sunrise. "They've all been claimed and accounted for."

Mavros' expression remained calm yet concerned. "We did arrive too late, correct? They've all been…"

"No. We decided not to. It's very rude to talk in front of them as though they aren't confused and sitting at the table, you do realize.." The Elder Gnome now spoke, eyeing everyone quite seriously, though he still has a hidden smile of joy somewhere behind his eyes. "Lady Ayumi, Lord Bloodbeard, Lord Gwillem, Brother Caine, and the harmonic sorcerer Arkhathanghinarridh….it is my pleasure to announce that none of you have been 'poisoned', nor will be under any magic to alter your minds as was deemed appropriate to do so."

"Meaning one of them is the murderer or witnessed it? Who murdered Lord Pergaminí? Someone here must know what happened to him or is responsible..." Jin said, looking at those from the Shooting Star with interest, though not a hostile manner. He waited a moment for someone to confess or comment.

Caine the Nomad

"Oh! So that's it..." Caine couldn't help himself as he broke the silence. "His Lordship has slipped this mortal coil... But as we already told 'them' He killed himself!" Caine flicked his hand towards Mercy and her Father, though his eyes remained locked on the two newcomers to their table.

"I don't really understand why a banker would be present at a murder investigation, unless you were trying to buy something? But I would expect a Captain of the Guard to be able to know when he is being lied to or not. So mark these words well Ser. That Pergaminí is the one directly responsible for his death."

Gwill
left-aligned image
Gwill leans back, away from the stranger who just asked to sit next to him. Gwill eyes the man and his jewel, notes his clothes and his manner and the reactions from Balabayu and Mercy. Gwill remembers but a few moments ago, Mercy asking "Bertie," to see to the door. Gwill doesn't believe Mercy didn't know who was coming and he thinks the man's choice to sit with Gwill is no accident. Gwill gets the itching feeling he is being set up, for something. He sort of feels like he has been invited to a card game by people who have already played the hands before dealing and decided and set the game against him.
Still looking up at the man, Gwill twice taps his finger against his chin, then crooks his finger like a fishhook before calmly saying, No. Gwill looks over at the Dragonborn, watching his reaction before turning back to the man, No, I don't prefer to have you sit near me. I think your station is better suited to sitting near Bonzander or Caine. And no, we have not been rushed. Our host and hostess have treated us well and without urgency or pressure. As you so clearly see, I am lolling about this morning, not rushed by anyone at all. I may decide to stay in these Pajamas for the length of the day. That is if I am allowed to wear them for a walk in the gardens. They really are quite comfortable and I think stylish to boot. You really should try them next time Mercy invites you to stay the night.

Gwill resumes eating and drinking, watching the verbal jousting with keen interest. Gwill doesn't say anything, but he clearly heard Mercy saying that he and the others,
Quote:
"They've all been claimed and accounted for."
That doesn't sound so swell either, but probably better claimed by Mercy than Captain Jin and Mavros. Gwill looks over at Arka, seeing how his friend took all this in and if Arka showed any recognition of the Captain.
At Mavros' mention of compensation Gwill cocked an eyebrow and waited to hear more as the verbal fencing continued. Gwill wondered if Captain Jin had PenguinMangler's body. After Caine finished speaking, Gwill tinged his glass with his fork to gain attention, Captain Jin, how do you know Lord Pergamini was murdered? Do you have his body? Or since he is missing you presume he died? Before you ask, I was on the foredeck when the crash happened. Lord Pergamini had left the deck shortly before, so I don't know where he went, what happened to him or who may or may not have killed him.

To Banzander she says, "To be fair my own use of the common tongue tends to be rather influenced by Elven. I can be somewhat..." She pauses a moment and goes for, "Talkative and prone to use words that are either archaic or simply complex. I will, of course, endeavor to eliminate obfuscation." Not realizing that she has already failed in that endeavor.

To Mercy she smiles and says, "I would be pleased to meet Keeper Alex." Though it is somewaht just part of the shuffle as more people come in and information is provided at a rapid pace.

As the speaking completes she says, "Hold up. We have all been claimed? I must protest this claim in the strongest of manners. My virtue remains intact and I refuse to allow any woman...or man...to claim it without first pursuing me in the proper fashion. If this claim is some other sort of claim I would point out that I am not property or chattel and thus reject any suggestion that I can be claimed in that fashion."

She looks to the dragon born and frowns, "Sir, you say you are pleased that we have not been poisoned. Yet, I would suggest that such a thing ought to simply be expected in any inn one may lodge within. We expect civilized people to not poison us while we sleep or impugn our minds with magic. Your pleasure that we have not been is the utmost in crass and rude behaviour." Her eyes flash over to Mercy and she adds, "Milady Mercy I am rather disappointed in you. Elves should not allow themselves to be so crude and now I wonder if perhaps you all ought to be pleased that I have not, in a fit of temper, decided to use my magic to burn down this entire structure?" Anger flashed in her eyes.

Arkhathanghinarridh | Brass Dragonborn | Draconic Sorcerer (Bronze Bloodline)
right-aligned image
Knew it! Arka suppressed a wince and felt sudden regrets as the Silvertalon followed the human into the room; it hadn't really been that much of a drop from the window. By reputation, Captain Jin was considered reasonable by Crescent Guard standards and the situation wasn't too tense, but a guard was always a guard. Arka caught Gwill's glance and very casually set his knife and fork down. The defendant was brandishing an edged weapon when I entered, Your Honor... No need for that.

The unexpected guests didn't seem all that unexpected either, at least to the older gnome. Arka did wince noticeably when Mercy picked him out as a Key, sincerely hoping the mention would be lost among all the introductions. Whoever she was, she was really into everyone else's business. "Captain Jin, Mavros, so good to meet you. If anything we've hurried our hosts, I believe we woke up earlier than anticipated."

After that, the conversation was all downhill and not in a good way. "Well. Compensation would be welcome if it's appropriate, and it's very comforting to know that our minds won't be tampered with even though someone deemed that appropriate, but I think you all have the jump on us on just about nearly every topic that's come up. I've got no idea about this claiming business, nor whether or not Pergamini is dead. I was on deck with Sir Gwill and Lady Ayumi when Pergamini went below, that was the last I saw of him."

He tried to catch Ayumi's eye. "Sooooo, who was it again who wants to play with our heads?"

Bonzander Bloodbeard | Hill Dwarf | Cleireach of Selune
right-aligned image
Bonzander listens to the others as he pushes his plate back from the table. One need not be a seer to see the explanation offered by Mercy sits less than well with our Cleireach of Selune. He understands politics to a degree but he also believes in straight talk and he knows he's received none of that here. He doesn't offer anything else at this point as he feels he won't get any answers to his questions but when Mercy confirms they are hiding things from him and his companions he looks up and glares at her. He takes a long breath to keep from saying something in his anger. He looks at her hard and says, "Yer hospitality is greatly appreciated but now 'tis time to take leave for I'll nae dine with those who hide secrets from me."

Bonzo begins to stand when Ayumi says,

He stutters for a minute and forgets what he was going to say and even what he was doing. "M'Lady Ayumi, I danae have any intention of...I mean, Ill not be...uhm, please accept me apology ifn ye think I would be so bold as to think that ye and I would...uhm, obfuscate. 'Twas not me intention to suggest...uhm...nae that I donnae think ye are quite beauti...uh, what I mean ta say is...ach, all tongue tied ya got me." Bonzo sits down heavily and simply looks away, not caring that the others are staring at him.

Bonzo hears the door open almost immediately after he sits and is glad that the attention is off of him. He watches as the Human and Silver Dragonborn enter the room. He hears Mercy introduce them and he immediately is on guard. Then he hears the human talk and his smooth ways put him even more on guard. He has heard his type before when they come to trade with the Dwarves. They come with their smooth talking ways and barter, promising this and that but meaning less than half. He understands that in the back and forth of trade and has even been a part a time or three. Yet, this is not a trading session. At least, he thought it wasn't. Then he hears something about mind altering magics and them all being claimed and his temperature starts to rise.

The jolt of it took Bonzo by surprise. His head shot up straight and he looked at Jin but said nothing. His momentary happiness that all eyes are not on him after his embarrassing apology to Ayumi evaporates. For once he let the others speak and he listened intently to each. When Ayumi expresses her anger he smiles grimly and adds, "Aye, and mayhap a display 'o Selune's wrath at bethinking one 'o Her Cleireachs be a murderer would add to the rightful wrath lady Ayumi is so graciously holding back."

He listens to his friend Arka explain his whereabouts and the others as well. He realizes that he was the one who actually had an argument with Pengiunpoop and would be a suspect since they were in close proximity. At this point Bonzo has had enough. His fist slams down on the table hard enough to rattle every plate, cup, saucer, and glass on it and make the silverware jump. He stands up with his back ramrod straight to his four feet eleven inch height and rather comically has to move the sleeping cap out of his face and off to the side. "'Twould have been well to know 'o Pengiunpoop's death ere now," he says as he glares at Mercy and BB. "Yer hospitality leaves much to be desired now that I think on it." Then he looks at the two newcomers. "Aye, I called him Penguipoop and if dead he be mayhap I nae should besmirch him but 'tis a name well earned by his treatment 'o Lady Opal. I was with him below decks as was Ca..." he stops short before revealing any names, not wanting to get anyone else in trouble"...were others. Last I saw him he was saying something aboot saving us all then all Hell broke loose, as did most 'o the boot and he blinked oot. Yes, I said blinked oot. After that 'twas all I could do to get topside so the boot didnae become me coffin."

Bonzo takes a deep breath and continues in a voice hard as the anvils of the Dwarves, "Claimed ye say? What mean ye by that? I be the son 'o a Thane on an errand 'o the King. I be the nephew 'o a Thane and one not unknown to ye methinks. None here need be claiming me and he who does'll lose an arm in the attempt. Ill treat me at yer peril. And now I add these goodly folk around me too. No ill treatment of them will I be acceptin."

His anger is palpable as he continues. "Me uncle, Thane Dwergild of the House 'o Stone and Anvil, will be ill pleased ta hear of my treatment this day. I dinnae know what happened to Penguinpoop after he blinked out and I dinnae care. Tell us all now why ye think he be dead and nae more Selune cursed secrets. And ifn ye donnae want at best, all trade with the Dwarven houses cut off or at worst fer two chain clad Dwarven armies ta be marching on yer town you'd be wise to be quick aboot it." As he says the last word he again hammers his fist onto the table hard enough some few glasses that before merely rattled this time fell over.

Caine the Nomad
left-aligned image

"If I may be so bold Lord Bonzander..." Caine was getting tired of the Dwarf banging and shouting. Alluding to his noble status, when he himself had grown up without such luxuries "But as far as anyone knows, the boat that you were last seen on went down? Correct? And only a handful of survivors were returned, and those were under a cover of darkness. And then, some of those survivors were sent to different locations under direct guard? So I'm not convinced anyone in your kingdoms 'actually' knows where you are, or if you were even among them that was returned to the surface." Caine placed his palms together in front of his mouth, pressing his fingers into little steeples as he thought "You are far from your powerful friends, so threats of war to the Captain of the Guard might not be the most prudent of your choices... Or perhaps I am mistaken and you have spies everywhere just waiting to spring forth into this very room and save you from your discomfort?" Caine made a show to sit and wait for the agents of the Bloodbeards, taking a few seconds to look around the room before shrugging and continuing "Or, maybe you dont? But as I already mentioned, His Lordship is the one responsible for his own death... And provided nobody here gives the law-bringers any more reason to question us? There will be time to pay back these transgressions... If that is what they truly are... When we aren't quite so disadvantaged."

Bonzander Bloodbeard | Hill Dwarf | Cleireach of Selune

Bonzander turns on Caine and retorts, "Ye may say whatsoever ye please as long as ye keep yer nose ootta me business. I'm quite sure ye think yerself quite cute with yer dramatic pause fer effect. Now let me ask ye something, they themselves said we were all claimed, whatever that's to mean. So, someone, and more likely than not many someones, know of our survival. Moreso, me father has friends here in this town, the kind 'o friends that have risked their lives together and through that bond would die one for the other. If word of me survival be oot there 'tis already making its way to me uncle's ears, and me da's ears too whether by land or sea."

This time it is Bonzo who pauses for effect, but it isn't Caine he pauses for. He pauses to make sure Jin and Mavros know what he said is true and watches them as his words sink in. "Plus, I'll wager plenty 'o eyes saw our rescue, and there be only one box can keep a secret. Those eyes would know their information be worth good Dwarven gold and eventually word would get to me uncle, who is expecting me." He lets his eyes leave Jin and Mavros after he completes his point and he fixes them on Caine again, "As far as Penguinpoop is concerned, as I said erefore, I donnae give a whit about what did or dinnae happen to him but this much be true. Ye, Caine, have no idea who or what caused his death nor do ye know what evidence they," he nods towards Jin and Mavros, "have regardin his death...like say a body. So yer protests be rather limp. So ye hang on yer disadvantage and I'll make sure they know just how advantaged we be."

The Sun Is Up, the Birds are Singing!
"That's an intriguing and rational explanation. I like how you think, Brother Caine! Indeed, indeedy, I do! I told you, daughter.." Balabayu said excitedly and took another sip from his yellow-flowered tea. He smiles rather grandly at Caine and pushes a small pale purple dish piled high with sweet sugared rose petals towards the Swamp Dwarf with an ethereal hand he waved into brief existence.

Jin scoffed at Caine's words, looking perplexed, then jabbed a clawed finger in Mavros' direction. "He's no banker. He's a mediator and represents all sorts of 'important' people. And no one but criminals lie to me. Usually."

As Mavros assumed he could sit anywhere he'd like, he was in the middle of pulling out the fine but age-worn wood seat when he heard the word "No." This is probably a word he is used to in different contexts that are not personal. This was personal-ish, and therefore took him by surprise; this was clear by his friendly smile dropping for a moment as he practically stared at Gwill. The nobleman with the dark emerald against his chest slowly smiled when the Half Elf finished. He leaned toward Gwill, and lowered his calm, rich voice. "Gwillem n'o Angeline de Montreve, you are lucky to be the honored guest of such a respected host and hostess." Dropping that tidbit, he strode to the other end of the table and made himself comfortable in a seat next to Anne, helping himself to a fragrant cuppa tea.

Again, Jin was trying to partake in breaking fast by emptying a small, shallow ceramic bowl of stuffed green olives down his maw. He chewed, amber and black-slit eyes focused on Gwill now instead of Caine. "OH, well, no we don't have proof of his death, nor a body. We have nothing, honestly."

Mercy
"Because he's not dead. He's simply missing. No one but you cares about what Laryssa 'the Seer' says. She's an absolute liar or lunatic." Mercy spit her annoyed words at Jin, and pointed to Caine. "If he teleported off the ship, from that distance…he's probably in the Ethereal Plane or maybe the Plane of Water, and that would serve him right. Not quite sure what he was saving everyone from. Probably whatever drove the Guardian insane."

"Look here, Mercy, the Warden always puts his faith in the Seer when there are issues, and she's always come through. And there's Lord P - uh…Penguinpants'...sister-in-law who feels his dead-ness." Jin spoke up yet again, but he's clearly becoming uncomfortable and clearly on the defensive.

"The Warden puts another thing in the Seer as well." Mercy retorted with a roll of her eyes.

Lady Ayumi easily caught the attention of all at the table, especially when it was a chance for flaring tempers to subside. Mavros quickly rose to his feet, hands clasping the sides of his elegant gold-trimmed coat to straighten it out. He bowed his head towards the Elf scholar. "M'lady, please understand that your virtue, reputation and all that involves your standing has not been effected in the least. All of these affairs are quite private - not that there are any unseemly affairs improperly being conducted in your presence." As he said this, Jin gritted his pointed teeth as he was admonished. His amber eyes darted from the Elf to Mercy and then to Mavros almost pleadingly. For a Silver Dragonborn, it was a rather sad sight.

"The claims that we speak of…" Mavros continued as he exchanged a glance with Mercy, who was sitting as tall as one could at her size in her cushioned seat, listening to Ayumi with strict attentiveness. The gentleman continued. "...are those claims of people or organizations that have placed their trust and confidence in each and every one of you. We call it 'claiming'; others may say that you are being 'vouched' for. They are putting their lives or reputation on the line in this faith, some of it blind, in you all."

Mercy forced a smile, that seemed almost more like a grin, but indeed…she is trying to smile at Ayumi. "I apologize to you for not taking in your sensitivities and needs as both an Elf and one held in such high regard at your Academy. I thank you for having the self control that your tutors and mentors expect you to keep as is becoming of one with a pristine reputation. Professor Lilander Rahli has already been in contact with us about your safety and well-being." The Gnome paused for a moment, and genuinely and respectfully tilted her head in Ayumi's direction. "Your point has been made."

From out of his almost-cowering next to the spread of food, Jin was about to respond to Arka, finding assurance in another Dragonborn being in the room it seemed. But then Bonzo spoke, and when he spoke, emotions started to come into play - one of which was his irritation and anger, and perhaps arrogance - or so his words could be taken that way. But, the Elder Gnome smiled quietly to himself as he cradled his cuppa tea until steam lightly rose from it. He added a pair of sugar crystalized violets to the cup and observed, listening to the words and perhaps the meaning behind the words spoken between the Dwarves. Anne furiously scribbled notes with the never-ending ink pen. Pages were filled, even though her writing looked small upon the parchment.

"He's right. The Captain of the Guard doesn't like war threats. It would normally make the Captain worried, but it is out of his hands." Jin said, leaning against the wall now with the hilt of his two-handed sword above his left shoulder.

BB Flowerfoot
"With all due respect, Lord Bloodbeard, you best listen to the wisdom of your brother Dwarf. He is correct in that you were brought secretly to shore under the cover of night as well as fog. As far as anyone would know, unless they were told, is that you are all lost to the sea. Except Lady Ayumi due to the Academy's watchfulness, of course." The Elder Gnome said, placing his tea cup down and folding his hands on the table, a pair of simple rings displayed on his fingers. His demeanor is surprisingly relaxed and unconcerned with any emotional outbursts. "To clear the air as I am able to at the moment, I will answer Arkhathanghinarridh's question, and further address this issue of 'claiming'. There was a decree made long, long ago that was to secure the secrecy of the Triton's existence; to allow them to return to a mythological or legendary status. They wanted there to be doubts about them; they wanted to be left alone and out of Human…and others' affairs." He looked to Mavros questioningly. In return, Mavros considered his words and nodded. "Yes, that is correct." The Host of Mercy Cottage looked at those survivors at the table, his gaze settling on Arka. "It is one thing for a Triton to be seen here and there. Sea Elves are around. No one in the normal public knows the difference. Strange events can be dismissed over time so there are no treasure-hunters or trophy seekers. The decree promised that by any means necessary, if the situation warranted a cover-up, that memories would be altered and life would go one with no one the wiser. No event involving the Tritons at this … level has been seen in a very, very long time. If ever. Because of Opal, as you call her, the crew of the Shooting Star has been entrusted with such secrets for a couple of decades. They serve as intermediaries sometimes, and will sometimes trade one thing for another keeping everyone on good terms. Now…Mavros.."

Mavros stood once again, straightening out his coat and placing his hands flat on the smooth wood of the table before him. Looking at those collected here with consideration in his eyes, he continued. "Opal, and others on the Shooting Star have placed their trust in a number of you. Arka is practically one of the crew and they extended an offer for him to be so in the Spring. Brother Caine is beloved by a couple of crew members and tried to save the ship, putting himself at great risk and the Captain personally vetoed any mind alteration due to this conduct. Gwill also made a strong impression on Opal, as did Lady Ayumi and Lord Bloodbeard. Since we are speaking of trust and secrets, there are societies that have also 'claimed' a couple here as members, new initiates, or 'persons of interest' and strongly put their collective foot down against any meddling with your memories. It is most curious for you all as it is for us. Lord Bloodbeard is expected to meet with his people who have entrusted the Flowerfoots to do what needed to be done. The situation down at the beach…down at the island…is all a mess between crates being stolen, returned, and Tritons that are in an aggressive state. And, there is Lord Pellagrinipants."

"I suggest that you all get dressed and prepare for the day. We'll brief you when you are ready and will have a second breaking fast packed for you, along with gold to suit your needs. Do you have any further questions or do you want to first want to let this all sink in?" Mercy asked in a gentler tone then one would expect as she tapped her finger in front of her to get Anne's attention so she'd stop writing.
