TIME: 1930

Where Mayer's pleas did little to move bodies, Abel's threats had them rushing to clear the streets. The sound of auto-loaders and weapon locks kicking into action added a lot to the threat. Alder muttered a prayer to the founders and kept his weapons ready, making sure nobody tried to cause any more slowdowns.
>>Thanks for the assist, Heretic.<< He said through a close-range transmission, and returned to his precise adherence to by the book street sweeping.

Soon the force was through, and caught an entrance to a main road that passed through a major trainyard. as you moved at a swift pace, the road proved its worth as a path for army units to rapidlly move through the city at need.
By using this route you managed to avoid trying to smash or weave your way through abandoned equipement and forgotten cargo boxes full of founders know what.

As you moved from one are to the next, you noticed a certain class of person moving through this area at such a time. Bands of disenfranchised youths, wearing battered synth-leather, heavy work boots, and a variety of wild hairstyles, roamed. They moved about on foot, or on the backs of battered, ramshackle vehicles, eyeing the patrol with hostility.
But they didn't attempt to hinder or block the patrol in any way. They weren't mad, no street gang could tackle a fully armed army force packing the amount of firepower the squad had.

Despite this, it didn't seem like their numbers were decreasing, and dozens of young people trailed alongside the main road as the party kept moving to the end of the area.
Sergeant Alder opened up the squad comms, >>I don't like this, requesting permission to engage. Us suits can get them to back off shortly.<<
Apparently this was too much for Private Knox, a young man from the District 6, the poorest area in the city. Had high concentrations of dissident groups. The Great Leader considered it a waste to try and maintain a permanent army unit garrisoned there.Scrapes who was almost done his compulsory service, and who in any other circumstance might be one of the sullen youths.
>>With due respect, Sarge, They won't follow us into the city zones. This is their turf, it'd be risky for them push into another area without talking to someone about it first.<<
This didn't seem to do much to soothe the old veteran, who rounded on the private. >>With due respect, private. This is Great Leader's "turf". Shut your mouth and wait for orders.<<

After this outburst, your long-range radios flickered as Lieutenant Green's voice crackled through your cockpits. "Recon Team -----, come ---." The signal was breaking constantly, and it was hard to make out his words. "We've ---- from Distri----- ---. We're confir------- gate openings, ------- Sector 21 and -------------. St---- ---- word from Cen-------"
The signal went dead and left you with nothing more than a hiss of static as the battlesuits, lacking the space for long-range radio systems, continued stomping down the road.

OOC You can attempt to make a Hack or Fix check to try and retrieve more of the radio signal. A successful Assault check, or a more difficult Threaten check, can ensure the gangs of young people don't follow you any further.

As the signal comes in scrambled, Salm quick started to pull up the comms systems on his mech. Patching it into the massive radio box behind his seat, he queued a nearby radio tower and overrode its security countermeasures. Stealing the bandwidth, he pumped the gain and patched it back into their comm line to beef up the signal strength. Sure he probably threw 40 people off their house internet link and disrupted a dozen different streaming programs, but the night was turning bad. Catching what he did, it sounded like more gates were opening and being taken over which meant bad things for people like him. A lost episode was hardly the worse that might happen tonight. Clicking his own line on to the squad, "Boosted the signal Sarge. We should be able to hear them loud and clear as long as we stay in this sector. "

SummaryI have an Omni-Hook. Not sure if that helps or not, but I got an 11.

OmnihookSalm's omnihook booted up and tried to steal some bandwidth, only to pick up nothing but interference. Even his attempt to boost incoming signals failed as everything came scrambled into unrecognizable static. Salm was well aware that this should have worked, and the omninet should have given a distinct edge in communication, but failed in an absolute way. Salm quickly realized that the only answer now could be powerful, intentional interference.

Tension>>Permission not granted. Fire only at targets positively identified as hostile.Weapons tight. If they get in our way, yell at them again or fire a warning shot, but we're not looking to start a fight here. Sir.<< Mejia's mech, Lanza, was at the center of the convoy, scanning for threats. It was true, she didn't like what she saw-- dozens of thermal signatures even behind the buildings-- but on a night like this, shots fired could be heard across the city. Metaphorically, that is. Then the transmission from GC came in. Sh*t. The whole sector was under threat now. Salm boosted the signal, luckily; she'd have to see if the message could be cleared up. >>Thanks, Arain. I'm glad you're with us.<< The guy annoyed her to no end with his absentmindedness, but he was brilliant and right now, she'd take any blessing that appeared.

"Garrison Command, be advised. Recon B experiencing static on long-range comms. Continuing to objective."

Quote:
Salm quickly realized that the only answer now could be powerful, intentional interference.
(Assuming Salm relays this to the group)

Sh*t.

Okay. This is bad. No word from Central, more gates opening, and now radio jamming. Mejia takes a deep breath.

>>Salm, see if you can locate the source of that interference, or clean up the transmission we received. We'll continue forward. Everyone stay alert.<<

Nočle tracked the rowdy youths on her screens, trying to remain detached in the face of her own past. She knew that the glue that bound these people together was desperation and poverty, and while they could be dispersed easily on the spot they or others like them would return soon enough. As such she quietly agreed with Meija, for her own reasons, trodding along in her Warmachine.

>>All the more reason to stick together,<< Heretic broadcast as it became clear that they were dealing with some advanced opposition here.

OOCNo special actions from me. Moving and waiting to see if we can locate the interference.

Adjusting buttons, switches, and levers, all Salm could do was frown after realizing it wasn't the buildings but something powerful enough to block their military grade gear. Which probably meant other military grade equipment. Continuing to rotate the frequency dial as thye marched along, he opened his comms to the others, "No luck. It is blanketing the area. However we have military grade gear or at least we should. That means they are either really good with civilian grade or they have their own military gear. "

It was a little disheartening that her own efforts dealing with the crowds had been in vain while direct threats had proven highly effective. As they moved through the industrial zone she was unnerved to see the youths stalking them as they progressed even though they would be little threat to them inside their military vehicles. >>I take it such interference isn't common.<< She broke her silence. The source of the interference had to be the same people behind the opening of the gate's and the disappearance of the scout squad. It was likely all connected.>>Maybe the interference is why we lost contact with the scouts.<< Having little useful to offer regarding their communication issues she kept an eye on the sensors keeping watch for potential trouble.

Salm was right, their equipement was "military grade" and was prone to issues given its age, but it should be the best equipment available in the city, built to simply work and work efficiently. It had to be military grade or higher, and there was little word of the scrapyard dissident forces in the city having access to anything that complex or effective.
Sergeant Alder went silent as they marched out of the railyards and into a city environment, tracking his arcs as the recon force pushed on to their objective. Private Knox was correct, the youths didn't follow the military force outside of the railyards, leaving them behind to move through streets that were emptying as curfew came closer.
Any further attempts to send long-range signals were met with static, and the silence began to eat at the suits. The generally amiable Corporal Myers pulsed a question to your squad, "Hey Specs, any updates from Operations, currently Lieutenant Greenops?"

Moving towards the last known location of the scout squad's signal, the party left the relatively cleaner streets of urban crowding to enter one of the truly destitute parts of the Sector. First Landing had no shortage of these areas, places where basic utilities like electricity and water purification stopped working frequently, where buildings in desperate need of proper repair were left to crumble and be repaired by locals using tarps and sheet metal. Already crowded streets were made even tighter by impromptu extentions and additions by the local populations. Despite the curfew, gangs of people wandered the unwashed alleys and "roadways" of this area with impunity, glaring at the military force at the same time they scrambled to stay out of your way.
One thing began to become clear as you moved into the area where the scout squad was last located. The crowds were becoming thicker, not thinner.

The reason becem clear as you pushed through increasingly congested streets. As you entered a clearing in the scrap jungle, probably some sort of local marketplace, you find Zorka's mech.
The bipedal scout mech was armed with an LMG and a Marker Rifle, something that paired well with Roberts' high-powered sniper setup. Zorka's mech was slumped into the remains of a sheet metal building, and the reason for its immobility was clear. There was a massive hole punched through the center of the machine, right where the cockpit should be.
There was a crowd of citizens making a wide circle around the square, muttering and staring as your force moved to investigate the scene.

The environments felt increasingly familiar, a sensation that Heretic had already come to terms with. It was part of her past, not her present, but inside she did not look down on the people that lived here. Not everybody could leave, after all, even though most wanted to. Their numbers were always growing as the wealthy needed scarcity to define themselves through, as was evidenced by how crowded the area was.

And then there was the mech - punctured by something heavy, just as she had feared. No surprise that the natives were looking to scavenge, but hopefully they had not destroyed any evidence pointing towards who or what had hit their compatriot. They may also still be alive, though it did not look very like, and where was the other mech in the equation?

"MOVE ASIDE CITIZENS," Heretic had her megaphone roar across the area, relying on the tinny amplification of her voice rather than putting a lot of feeling into it. The number of people about, she'd have to repeat it anyway.

>>Weapon that can cause that hole isn't easy to hide,<< she told her squad over while stomping towards the scene of the crime. >>Keep your eyes peeled. Anybody scan anything?<<

As it was, she wondered if the culprits were still at the scene, either among the crowds or hiding in some of the building with their weaponry. She studied her sensors, letting her electronic gaze wander all around, trying to pick up on what she could.

OOCNot sure if the crowd needs a threaten to disperse them enough to investigate. In case they do, here is a roll along with my spot. Both are terrible though, so I'm not expecting much.

Voxing back a negative, Salm informed them of the jamming as he marched along. The gangs travelling with them hardly gave him any cause for concern. If they were stupid enough to attack them they would end up with a lot dead. If weapons strong enough to take them down had filtered down in to the street gangs, they had already lost this battle anyway.

Watching the crowd gather and spotting the mech, Salm settled down in the middle of the street. From on top of his thighs, two massive hatches popped open and out extended a massive claw from each. Settling on the ground, the torso of his mech leaned over and the gun barrel extended from his back. Rotating like an old tank turret, he started to scan the approaches for trouble well he opened a comm line again to the suits and his new squad, "Coporal Myers, advanced to the mech. Check for Zorka and any supplies. Also, is there any other damage beside the chest shot? If that is the only damage, that is a massive rifle to take down a mech in a single shot. ".

Entering the destitute sectors of the city always made her feel uneasy. Knowing a large part of the city struggled with poverty and seeing recordings was one thing, it was something else entirely to see them for yourself. It was hard to imagine these places were even in the same city as the clean and well ordered streets of her home neighborhood. One of the great cities of the universe and people still had to live like this.

>>Oh no!<< She burst out horrified by the sight of the hole punched straight through the enormous machine. Right through the cockpit. She felt a sickening feeling in her stomach. Had Zorka been aboard she didn't imagine there would be much left of her. >>I'll move in to assist you Corporal.<< She began pushing through towards the wreckage. >>If you discover any wounded pull them out and I'll bring them aboard for emergency treatment.<<

>>****...<< Private Brimari's response rang cold on the squad frequency, but your section quickly took command of the situation. Shaking out of his own shock, Alder ordered the Battlesuits into formation. >>Form a half circle around the area, watch your arcs and keep an eye on the crowd. Move!<<
The battlesuits formed their protective line in front of your squad's larger machines, a typical fortress formation that allowed for overlapping fields of fire. Corporal Myers quickly fell out of line to follow Salm's orders.

Myers' battlesuit tore at jagged bits of metal to give himself better access, then his hydraulic canopy opened and, armed with a small carbine, the corporal moved to investigate. A few minutes later, he emerged with a small black box tucked under an arm, slightly damaged and with exposed wires occasionally sparking.

He got back into his battlesuit, and the squat thing began moving some of the rubble around Zorka's machine.
In short order he hauled out a male human shape from beneath the rubble of the shack Zorka's mech had fallen into.
Myers quickly moved to Mayer and deposited the bloody figure. >>I found this civilian in the rubble, he's still breathing, but he's wounded, bad.<<
There was a pause. >>I didn't notice any evidence of more than a single shot being taken. It seems whatever hit Zorka did her in at once.<<
Again a pause, >>There were some red smears around the inside of the machine, the round looks like it punched directly through her cockpit. If she was in her machine when it hit, red smears would be all that's left of her.<<

Heretic's threats didn't scatter the crowd, and her scan of the area didn't reveal any evidence of whatever had done the damage. She did, however, notice that the crowd had moved forwards somewhat. The sound of concrete chunks and bricks bouncing off of reinforced armor started to echo through the square as some of the crowd started throwing bits of debris at the military force.

"Everyone get ready for a fight. They are sensing weakness since they see one of us destroyed. We need to disperse them now or as stupid as it is, they are going to pick a fight with us." Salm says on the squad channel.

Opening the external speakers to the crowd and cranking the bass a little to give his voice some depth, "YOu are violating curfew. You have also just attacked a convoy of the Great Leader's military."

Pausing to let it sink in for a second, "Both are punishable by death however the Great Leader is merciful and understands that times are stressful. Any who disperse immediately will not be brought to justice. Any who remain will be considered a hostile entity to the state. This is your first and final warning. "

Lowering the massive oversized cannon on his back, he points it at them well making a show of rotating the mortars a bit for extra effect. Dipping the rifle a bit to hit the empty ground between, he clicks the massive red button. Inside he barely heard anything with all the sound dampeners installed but he knew everyone else in the immediate area had their ears ringing.

SummaryIntimidate to break up the crowd. I don't know if I have anything but here is a roll which was a nice 15 so hopefully that helps.

The corporal's description of the scene quickly dashed her hopes that Zorka might have made it out somehow. The shot through the cockpit had been very precise and it didn't look like Zorka had much time to react otherwise there would have been much more damage in the surroundings. Unfortunately little collateral damage did not mean none. She winced at the sight of the man Myers deposited below her mech. That the man was still alive after Zorka's mech fell into the shack was a minor miracle in itself.

Surrounded by crowds, her squad yelling threats and the man on the ground bleeding to death she found herself momentarily overwhelmed by the chaotic situation. She wished doctor Merdon was here to make the decisions but wishing did not help anything. They did not even have communications up and she was the squad medic. It was on her now. Lowering her mach into standby position she set it up to act as a protective hulk of metal and unclasped the straps of her seat. >>Okay… okay. Cover me.<< She wasn't entirely sure what the protocol in this situation was but bringing civilians aboard was definitely not it. So instead she figured she'd go render medical assistance down there.

Quickly dismounting she let herself slip down onto the ground then went to kneel by the wounded man. It was time to put her training to the test. This was what she was here for. Without immediate medical attention the chances were good he'd soon succumb to his wound but if she could stabilize him long enough that somebody could bring him to the nearest hospital his chances would be much better.

An immediate stir ran through the crowd as Lightbringer's weapons systems switched into active modes. Rocks stopped flying real quickly, and a large portion of the crowd fled backwards. However a solid wall of particularly belligerent citizens reformed a solid line in the front, grim and dirty faces peering out through hard eyes. No more projectiles came at the squad, but this was not a stable situation. Some of these people had undoubtedly witnessed Zorka's machine go down, and like sharks scenting blood in the water, they had a mind for more.

Meanwhile Mayer was hard at work identifying the man's wounds. She worked quickly, pulling shrapnel and debris, setting some bones, spraying medical gel to seal wounds, and applying patches to finish things off. The man began breathing easier by the end of her medical triage, and stones were no longer thudding in the background. Quiet set in, real quiet, despite the crowd. The tension was almost physical, and the suits gripped their guns in tight, gauntleted fists.

Thanks for your patience with the slower posting. I know we're still waiting on a few people to finish up with their vacations and such, so updates for this game will be slow for another week or so. As well, I have the map up on roll20, make sure to tell me what your username if it's different from your RPGX username so I can give you control of your proper tokens.
