Kierra Sinclair
Kierra listened to the various viewpoints people offered on who to hire and whether to take the thieving urchins along or not. Simple fact was, Kierra felt for the little ragamuffins, having lived on the streets herself, earning what she could in a manner not dissimilar...at least, legally and morally speaking. More technical, perhaps, but still stealing.
She had to consider, however, how many crew she hired. They were paying in shares, and more crew meant thinner shares. The more she hired, the more jobs they'd have to hustle, and the less agreeable jobs they'd need to take just for the money. Not that she fancied them as heroes or anything, but she'd prefer to avoid staining her soul more than was really necessary just to get by. So far it was herself, David, Hasan, Hero, and John. They had room for one more crew in the bunks, by her reckoning, though she might need to give up her single to bunk with Hero to avoid any...weirdness. It's not like the girl would annoy her with talking too much, after all.
They also weren't really in a position to turn down their first fare, and 300 creds was 300 creds. And 'save a bunch of orphans' wasn't exactly a slippery slope of evil, by her reckoning. The only issue was keeping an eye on the kids, something better accomplished by someone they already trusted, at least a little. And Kierra knew exactly how to kill two birds with one stone.
Raife had done a As in two 180s - in, out, in again full circle. 360 when Dade announced her intention to get off the station no matter what, which presented Kierra with an interesting possibility. "No harm done, Mr. Raife," she said with a smile. "While it's true that I already have a security officer with my second-in-command over there, I believe you can actually provide a useful role aboard ship."
Indicating Dade and the kids, she said, "Ms. Dade has promised cooperation if we allow her to book passage, and I'm inclined to agree with her. Still, kids are kids, and prone to mischief...I know I was." Returning a subtle wink to Dade, she added, "And I'd prefer not having to jettison any of them into space, as they might get caught in an engine and make a mess. Therefore, I have a proposal for you. If you hire on with us, at least as long as Ms. Dade and her crew are aboard, it will be your task to not only keep them out of trouble, but also ensure that their needs...food, facilities, bedding and the like...are taken care of. Since you've already proven willing to take on unknown danger in their defense, you seem suitable for safeguarding their passage."
Leaning a little closer, she whispered, "After that, you may still be useful. You've seen Mr. Stone's approach to security, and it definitely has its uses. But there are different tools for different jobs. Mr. Stone is my hammer, a very useful piece of equipment...but you don't want to perform surgery with a hammer, do you? I need a scalpel as well, Mr. Raife. Someone capable of being subtle and understated, when force may be needed on the quiet, if you catch my drift? Mr. Stone is good for keeping order by his aggressive disposition, but I could also use a gun hand who can play it soft."
Arching a brow, she asked, "Does that sound like something you can deliver, Mr. Raife?"

Assets
A Cortex search won’t show much about your history besides your birth. Anyone attempting to dig up information on your past has a +8 added to the difficulty of their search. Casual searches will reveal almost nothing about you. Cortex Specter (Minor)
You gain a +2 step Attribute bonus to Intelligence for any Knowledge-based Skill roll when you try to recall some information (though it won’t help you when you’re taking actions). For example, if you are a doctor trying to match someone’s symptoms to a particular disease, you receive the bonus; it does not apply to rolls affecting your treatment of the patient. Highly Educated (Minor)
You perform complex mathematical calculations effortlessly, and solve most mathematical problems without fail (and no need to
roll the dice). You gain a +2 step Attribute bonus to Intelligence for all actions related to accounting, engineering, and navigation—and in any situation that requires immediate mathematic interpretation. Math Whiz (Minor)
Pick one Skill Specialty. You gain a +2 step Skill bonus on every use of that Skill. Talented Computer Programmer (Minor)
Pick one Skill Specialty. You gain a +2 step Skill bonus on every use of that Skill. Talented Hacker (Minor)
Complications
You’ve got a bad reputation—fairly earned or not—in your home region. You suffer a –2 step Skill penalty to any social interaction when the story of your terrible misdeeds comes into play. As a Major Trait, virtually everyone in the ‘Verse has heard bad things about you and the penalty applies almost all the time. You suffer no penalty when dealing with folks who know you personally, or those who feel you got a raw deal. Branded (Minor)
When performing a Complex Action, you have to make an Average Alertness + Perception/Specialty (usually Hearing or Sight) roll in order to notice anything other than what you’re doing, unless someone actually strikes you, or your work is forcibly interrupted (knocked down, hurt, etc). Hyper Focused (Minor)
You suffer a –2 step Vitality penalty to any attempt to resist the effects of alcohol, diseases, environmental hazards, and poison. Lightweight (Minor)
Anyone who would look down on a lily-skinned boss or an overseer who just shouts orders and doesn’t even know what they mean will probably dislike you, giving you a -2 Step Willpower penalty when making any Influence rolls against them. Lily-Soft Hands (Minor)
You cannot stand to be in the presence of blood, entrails, and dead bodies. You suffer a –2 step penalty to all Attributes until either the source of your discomfort is removed or until you leave on your own. Weak Stomach (Minor)

Character Concept & Background Notes
Kierra Sinclair was born and raised in the Central Planets of the White Sun system. Her parents worked basic, if well-paying, salary jobs for the Alliance and Kierra never wanted for any basic needs like food or shelter. Even entertainment and leisure were plentiful, and Kierra excelled at her studies, particularly in programming. For the first half of her life, all indications were that she would be a rising star and advance well within the ranks of an Alliance-approved career path in a prestigious company.
Her teenage years brought about typical rebellious attitudes and problems, though for the most part Kierra didn’t get into serious trouble. She did, however, begin to experiment with various aspects of her life: boys, boundaries, and hacking. It was the boyfriend quotient that caused the initial rift between Kierra and her parents, when she began dating a boy her parents didn’t approve of, as his family had allegedly supported the Independent faction during the Unification Wars. It didn’t help that the boy, Takuma, openly questioned the Alliance and its policies, despite his parents’ attempts to quiet him.
Then one day, Takuma was arrested for possession of illegal contraband. Kierra and Takuma’s family tried to have Takuma released, but the authorities not only denied release or bail, but had added sedition to the charges. Kierra went home and began conducting her own investigation into the charges. When an agent showed up at her family’s door, warning the family to “mind their own business”, things got a little scary, and her family forbade her to probe further into the arrest. Kierra, of course, ignored the warnings, and continued her search…albeit with more caution.
Eventually, she received assistance from various individuals who’d experienced similar situations and was able to determine that Takuma had been relocated to a “reeducation facility”. Fearful for Takuma, she tried to hack the facility and was discovered. The family’s accounts were frozen, and they were ordered to await further instruction. Naturally, Kierra ran like hell. She had time to grab a few items and some electronic devices before fleeing, beginning with hacking her own house’s electronic security to get out, as it had been overridden by Alliance security. Fleeing into the shadows, she found most avenues closed to her, as former friends immediately shunned her. However, between a few loyal friends, some skillful electronic subterfuge, and straight-up begging, she was able to lie, cheat, and steal her way onto a shuttle bound for the Outer Rim.
Since then, she’s been struggling to find her place. Not many folks on the Rim put much stock in book learnin’, or programming types. She’s been able to scratch out a living so far by setting up Cortex security for those who cared and could pay, including various underworld types who wanted their finances kept private. She’s done some security and programming for banks and hacked those who were too gorram tight-fisted and close-minded to pay her for security…a digital protection racket. She even earned a few credits reprogramming a bar’s electronic lights! Usually, though, either there’s not enough work to put down roots, or the ones she fleeced eventually figure it out and come looking for her.
