BaeshraThe assassin had thankfully decided to try and defend himself instead of going for the Matron realizing that teeth in the dark are a bigger concern. The Lizardfolk circled around behind the Drow and the staff straight down with all his strength square on the crown of the assassin’s skull. Blood immediately began to pour from the wound.

Venorsh
right-aligned image

Underestimating an enemy was always dangerous. Underestimating an “ally”, however, could prove outright deadly - and in Captain Kenep’s case it did.

Venorsh’s eyes had been turned to watch the inevitable showdown between Kenep and Zaknnar, the representatives of two generations of drows with different values and different loyalties. The outcome of such a duel was highly uncertain, both men being cunning and experienced warriors, and the silent drow expected that it would take every bit of support he could offer to tip the scales towards the desired outcome. What he never had expected, however, was that the duel would be decided by the hand, or rather blade, of another.

Why? Why does she kill her only ally?

The question dominated Venorsh’s mind as Faerae’s blade mercilessly sealed Captain Kenep’s fate.

Anger and vengeance were the obvious answers. The captain had attempted to negotiate with the weapons master, he had proposed that all of them should leave the city, though whether he was being truthful or not was debatable. This could very well have been a trick to confuse his enemies and stab them in the back when the moment was right.

Instead, he was the one to have been stabbed in the back.

Venorsh gazed inside Faerae’s cold and calculating eyes and it immediately became clear that her actions were not directed by emotions. She hadn’t killed her protector to punish him for daring to suggest a course of action that didn’t suit her. She had killed him because it served her purpose.

The Second Daughter must have realized that Venorsh and Zaknnar would not have attempted to arrest her without support. The soldiers loyal to them, loyal to her mother and sister, waited no doubt for their signal to attack. Even if the silent drow and the weapons master could be slain in time, even if Captain Kenep and the men he had gathered did their best to defend her, the battle would be fierce and the chances of victory slim. It was possible that a poorly aimed arrow or a wild slash of a blade would claim her life. Furthermore, with Venorsh and Zaknnar dead, who would be there to ensure that a lowly soldier didn’t decide that returning to the Matron with Faerae’s head in his arms wouldn’t be the more practical course of action? No, she stood a better chance of surviving this if she was allowed to speak to her mother directly and present herself as an unwilling accomplice, or -why not?- a victim. If she were to succeed in this, however, those with knowledge of her true role in the coup had to be silenced forever.

Captain Kenep had to be sacrificed.

Venorsh looked at Faerae with new respect. With the exception of Matron Narceress this female dark elf was the most intelligent and ruthless person he knew. Had he not been in House Do’rret’s service, he would have gladly followed Faerae even if that would have gained him a dagger in the back eventually.

"Mistress, please surrender your blade to weapons master Zaknnar." Venorsh’s tone was civil and the drow bowed deeply in respect before the Second Daughter, at the same time retrieving the Eye of Lolth from Kenep’s unmoving body. "We will escort you safely to the Matron. It is time for the daughter to return to the mother’s embrace, I think."

Attempting in no way to restrain her, Venorsh removed the bolt and opened the door, beckoning Faerae to go through it.

"Kindly inform the captain’s men that they are to reclaim his body and follow us. They are also to leave all their weapons behind and not to resist while their arms are being bound as soon as they leave the barracks. Their fate will be decided by the Matron herself."

He didn’t need to warn the Second Daughter that any attempt to escape would have dire consequences. She was far too clever not to realize that. Besides, for once both of them wanted the same thing - that Faerae reached Matron Tallin unharmed.

Baeshra, what about the ambush you reported? He has done much more than merely stalling the assassins!Have you been able to stall the assassins? Have reinforcements arrived? Are the Matron and the First Daughter still alive?

Baeshra
Blinded by the blood pouring from his head wound into his eyes, and from the intensity of the pain of Baeshra's jaws wrapped around his skull, the last remaining Drow assassin staggers helplessly

waving his dagger wildly in the air and completely missing the target.

The only comfort remaining for the Drow was that death would be quick.

Kioshomon, Lyda and Kiknah remain at the side of the Matron, her consort and Lytrhana, preparing to take action should any further threat present itself to their wards; seeing that Baeshra has the situation with the Assassins clearly in hand.

Venorsh
With no sign of any emotional involvement in what has just transpired, Faerae presents the bloodied dagger to Zaknnar who hurriedly extracts it from between her fingertips and secures it in his belt. Then, at the beckoning of Venorsh, she casually follows him through the door and out into the barracks where the rest of Captain Kenep's soldiers wait expectantly.

Not seeing the Captain immediately gets their attention and hands reach for swords before Faerae quickly stops them.

"Lower your weapons and do not resist. It is over. Captain Kenep is dead. Now we must all face our fate at the hands of our Matron."

The soldiers hesitate but ultimately do not dare refuse the command of a Noble of House Mlezzym. The clanking of metal against the cold hard stone of the barracks floor is matched only by the silence of the soldiers who say and do nothing as Zaknnar's trainees enter the barracks and begin securing the prisoners.

"I take my leave of you now." Zaknnar says courteously, as he makes his way over to join his trainees, "I fear that there is much more to do this night for you but there is no place for me in what happens next. May Lollth favour you... Whoever's side you take in this mess."

BaeshraBaeshra easily dodged the knife and brought his staff across the left knee of the assassin hearing and audible snap. The Lizardfolk retreated back into the shadows.

Venorsh
right-aligned image

Venorsh could scarcely believe it, but everything he had set out to achieve had actually been achieved. At a time such as this a smile could have been excused even on the lips of a slave. But he did not smile, nor did he give any other outer sign of satisfaction. Firstly, because there could be no joy in a tool doing what it had been made to do and secondly, because it was not over yet. Neither were the Matron and Lythrana safe yet, nor had the blame been put on Faerae’s head. Drow politics was a mess of entangled threads and one never knew what would happen if one of the threads was pulled hard or severed. Sometimes nothing happened. Sometimes the entire web collapsed.

Even more importantly perhaps, Ildan was still at large.

Venorsh received the weapons master’s parting blessing with a respectful nod of his head. Without the assistance of him and his trainees, things would have been much more difficult. Not impossible, for Venorsh was confident enough in his abilities to believe that he could have found another way to place the Second Daughter under his might, but much more blood would have been spilled and it was not at all unlikely that fate would not have been kind to him.

"When order is restored, your loyal service to the Matron and House Mlezzym will be made clear for all to see. Be ready to receive orders. The Mistress will no doubt have need of you before long."

Waiting for Zaknnar and those under his command to depart, leading away the late captain’s men, now unarmed and securely bound, the formerly silent drow turned to Tebryn Duskryn, the one leading the forces of House Do’rret in T’rhan’s absence.

"Lieutenant, we head immediately for the Matron’s quarters. The Second Daughter is to reach them unharmed and unmolested in any way. You and three of your men will escort her. The remaining two will scout a short distance ahead and notify us of any danger. I will become the Mistress Faerae’s shadow, never leaving her side. Be vigilant! Danger could be lurking in every corner. Keep your eyes open, not only around you, but also above and below. If Ildan, Matron Tallin’s personal assistant, is seen anywhere, I am to know immediately. You will do nothing, unless you get my permission. Now let’s go. Both Houses depend upon us."

Closing his eyes for a moment, the drow brought his palms together, pressing one against the other and whispering softly. dancing lightsSuddenly he opened his hands and four globes of violet light appeared, swirling around him. Venorsh carefully directed them to light the area in front, behind and above the group, while one of them slowly floated around those escorting the daughter back to her mother. Drow eyes could penetrate even the deepest darkness, but a little light made them all the more effective. If someone was waiting in ambush, they would now know it in time, or at least that was the dark elf’s hope.

Ready with preparations, Venorsh bowed deeply before Faerae before beckoning her to start walking.

"It is time, Mistress."

Baeshra
As Baeshra's staff makes contact with the Drow Assassin's left knee, he drops down into a kneeling position on the other knee cradling the injured joint with his left arm while keeping the dagger raised in his right. His assailant once more vanishes into the darkness that his eyes should be able to keenly slice like the blade of the dagger in his hand, yet he sees nothing. The finishing blow could come - will come - at any time and he is helpless to stop it. His heart screams out for escape but his training - or his fear of his Mistress - prevents him from abandoning his task, even if his body is incapable of completing it anymore.

Drawing on the last reserves of his strength the Assassin manages to get back on two feet. He's unsteady from both the blow to his knee and the head injury he's suffered, but he only needs one chance. Seeking the favour of Lolth in his hour of need he harnesses his connection to the weave and casts a Magical darkness spreads from a point you choose within range to fill a 15-foot radius Sphere for the Duration. The darkness spreads around corners. A creature with Darkvision can't see through this darkness, and nonmagical light can't illuminate it.Darkness spell around himself.

"Come and face me now creature!" He calls out to his hidden assailant, "Now that we once again fight on even terms!"

Bracing himself for the inevitable attack, he prepares his dagger for one last strike.

Venorsh
Zaknnar nods in acknowledgement of Venorsh before taking his trainees and leading them back to their quarters where they can rest and await the impending orders of Matron Tallin once this mess is all over. Venorsh watches them leave before turning his attention to Tebryn Duskryn and the soldiers of House Do'rret.

Tebryn listens to Venorsh' commands and then organises his men into a protective formation around Faerae. Two of his men push on ahead of them to act as scouts for any sign of danger, while the others take positions in a diamond shape around their new ward. Tebryn nods to Venorsh that he and his men are ready, and the entourage begins is final journey to the Matron's personal quarters where justice - or at least the Drow version of it - will be served upon Faerae.

For someone on their way to a potential death sentence, the second daughter holds her head high and maintains her dignity. Her coup had failed and her lover - if he ever was that - is dead. One could excuse the young noble for collapsing into a hysterical mess, yet she takes this final walk as if it were just another day. Perhaps she has a plan? Perhaps she believes she can sweet-talk her mother around, or even argue her case against Lythrana? Whatever is going through the young Drow's head it was hidden even from a powerful telepath such as Venorsh. Instead, all he can do is follow her and wait.

As the courtyard gives way to the sprawling hallways of the main house in the complex, the natural luminescence of the outside fades into the dull glow of the intermittently placed candles that decorate the sparse walls within the main building; candles left only for the slaves who lack the Drow ability to see in the darkness, so that they can serve their Matron to the best of their abilities. As they pass the main ballroom the light grows stronger; the ballroom itself still being very generously lit from tonight's auction, an event which now seems years ago. Yet the remnants of the chaos are still clear to see as the group passes by, and the servants busy themselves with the clean-up operation. Faerae shows little interest in the chaos that her plans for the even have caused. Her focus remains intently on the path ahead and not reminiscing on what has come to pass. Venorsh can't help but feel a sense of unease about her calmness.

T’rhan’s men have long since left the ballroom in search of Baeshra and Matron Tallin. Venorsh hopes that they have found them in good health still and that Faerae's calm is not down to a growing sense of victory for the assassins that attack Baeshra. The thought threatens to increase the pace of his steps but he reminds himself that Baeshra is an exceptional combatant who Matron Narceress would not have sent on this mission had she not the belief in his abilities.

Keep the pace. Get to the Matron's quarters. And bring this evening to a safe closure.

BaeshraBaeshra laughed as he circled the Drow. ”I have served Drow since I was hatched. You think I would have figured out their tricks by now?”The Lizardfolk did a solid thrust with the tip of his staff right in the assassin’s diaphragm knocking the wind out of him instead of doing a killing blow. As the darkness dispersed, Baeshra was checking the assassin’s mouth for any suicide pills that would prevent interrogation. Once removed, he dragged him back to in front of the Matron. “I kept this one alive for interrogation. Venorsh and the Weapon Master cornered the masterminds in the Barracks and rounded up all of the traitors. The Weaponmaster is dealing with the soldiers while Venorsh is escorting Mistress Farae with an armed guard to our location. The scouts will arrive first with the rest arriving shortly after that. May I have the pleasure of breaking this assassin for what he knows? I am very persuasive.”He kneeled with his head lowered in respect.

OOCHit with base damage of 6. Doing knock out blow instead of killing him. Checking mouth for suicide pills. Took some creative liberty figuring Venorsh would have alerted Baeshra of his success and Baeshra alerting Venorsh that the assassins were taking care of with one live prisoner. If I need to go back and edit I can.

Venorsh
right-aligned image

Venorsh, the soldiers of House Do’rret and his precious “guest-prisoner” were so close now, having almost reached the passage between the great ballroom and Matron Tallin’s personal quarters. The silent drow had been telepathically informed that Baeshra had dealt with no less than four faceless assassins, which was an incredible feat, and though his face revealed no emotion, he felt significantly relieved. His success at “persuading” the Second Daughter to follow him to her mother would have meant nothing if the Matron and the Heiress of the House had already been killed. In such a case he would have had no choice but to bow before Faerae, the new head of House Mlezzym, or cut her throat and pray to Lolth that no one suspected him of such a heinous act.

The chaos inside the ballroom was still evident, since the magnificent chamber was filled with those who had died a horrible death of suffocation, those who still clung to the water-filled bowls that ensured their survival and those who did their best to reestablish a semblance of order. No such thing was possible of course without one of the highborn females of House Mlezzym taking charge of the situation. Right now, however, Matron Tallin and her daughters were more interested in staying alive than dealing with the aftermath of the assassination attempt and the many lives that had been lost beneath their roof. House Mlezzym would soon be facing very serious accusations and unless its Matron managed to direct the blame elsewhere, things did not look favorable for its future. Perhaps Matron Narceress would take advantage of this event to elevate her own House in the place of her ally. Perhaps that had been her plan all along. Only she could answer this question and Venorsh would never dare ask it. He was, after all a mute. A tool. Her tool.

What worried him now was the fact that T’rhan and his men had still not reached Baeshra. Had he been delayed? Eliminated? Betrayed his own House? Various possibilities passed through Venorsh’s mind as he reached out to the captain, hoping for an explanation that would make sense.

T’rhan, where are you? You should have been assisting Baeshra in keeping the Matron and her daughter safe. Have you come upon Ildan or more of his “faceless ones” friends?

Reuniting
T’rhan, where are you?...

Venorsh reaches out to the leader of House Do'rret's forces and receives nothing but emptiness in response. Neither is there any sign of a fight - won or lost - in the empty hallways between the ballroom and the Matron's quarters. Something is amiss and Venorsh does not like it. For all of their careful planning this unknown factor could be the unravelling of everything they had achieved so far. With no other clues to the whereabouts of the missing soldiers, Venorsh continues towards his previous goal: Matron Tallin's personal chambers.

--

"Faerae?" Matron Tallin appears confused as to the mention of her daughters' name; perhaps she is truly unaware of the plotting and conspiracies of her offspring, or perhaps she is only surprised that the second daughter has been apprehended by mere servants of House Do'rret. "I will speak with the perpetrators of this conspiracy and my daughter. For your commendable efforts I will entrust you with the interrogation of this!"

The Matron waves a hand in the direction of the badly wounded and now restrained assassin.

"Once you have ensured my safe arrival at my chambers and have my guards in place, then have the prisoner taken to the dungeons and feel free to use any techniques that will extract the truth of what has happened tonight. Now, let us move on! I can feel the chills of these cold corridors already infecting my very soul!"

At last, the overly large and ornate doors to the Matron's quarters are pushed open revealing a grand entrance hall with its own decorative fountain at the centre; two sets of spiral staircases leading to balconies on either side of the room - which in turn lead to a series of rooms off the main hall. The Matron's quarters are almost a separate house hidden inside the walls of the main building of House Mlezzym. For Baeshra, Kioshomon and Lyda - who have already seen in the inside of Lythrana's personal quarters - the Matron's quarters are twice the size and twice as impressive!

As the group enters into the Matron's quarters hurried footsteps can be heard following them down the hallway behind. Preparing for another battle Baeshra and Kiknah take defensive stances, but relax as they see the familiar face of Venorsh and the House Do'rret guards approaching.

Matron Tallin makes a single brief glance at her daughter in the middle of the escort, before huffing quietly and turning her back. Lythrana however, keeps a firm gaze on her younger sister, as a wry smile begins to form on her lips. Once the approaching group are within a short distance she acknowledges her sister without revealing her awareness of her siblings plotting.

"Sister." She nods slowly and respectfully, whilst at the same time her unmoving eyes burn with a multitude of different emotions.

"Come! Now!" Demands Matron Tallin loudly and angrily, "I will address these traitors now lest their presence here taint the blessed relief of my sanctuary!"

The Matron takes two further steps into the entrance hall of her personal quarters and stops. She let's out a gasp of air and all eyes turn in her direction. On the floor in the middle of the entrance hall are the bloody corpses of four Drow soldiers. Venorsh recognises them from the soldiers in the barracks who followed T’rhan. Their throats have either been slashed or they have nasty gouges from groin to breastbone. The injuries appear to be the result of a surprise attack. From just beyond the water fountain what remains of T’rhan drags himself along the floor, leaving a bloody trail in his wake. The Drow soldier is barely alive and no longer in possession of his weapon.

Venorsh
right-aligned image

The fact that T’rhan and his men had seemingly disappeared without any traces or rational explanation worried Venorsh greatly, but after reaching the Matron’s party he didn’t have the time to either share his concern with the rest of the agents of House Do’rret or do something about it. He did, however, return the Eye of Lolth to Mistress Lythrana, bowing deeply before her in gratitude for the trust she had shown him. A few short hand signals also made certain that the six soldiers who had been escorting him knew to keep an especially close eye on Faerae and the consort of Matron Tallin should their good sense be clouded by rising desperation. Faerae was unlikely to make such a foolish mistake, but male drows were not known for their cool heads and Venorsh liked to prepare for all eventualities.

All eventualities with the exception of what had already taken place within the Matron’s chambers, that was.

The corpses of four of T’rhan’s men not only seemed to prove the silent drow’s sense of foreboding right, but also served to immediately mobilize him. Even as his eyes scanned all shadowy corners and places that could have been hiding further assassins, Venorsh ran forward, quickly examining the bodies of the soldiers. Their wounds were obviously lethal, but determining the identity of the weapon or weapons that had been used to inflict them and whether they had been coated with poison or not were details that could make all the difference in the confrontation that was sure to follow. One thing was certain. They had been taken by surprise, which meant that either Ildan and his supporters were responsible for this atrocity or some of the soldiers of House Do’rret had been infiltrated by the faceless ones.

T’rhan’s sudden appearance promised more answers than the cold and unmoving lips of his men could provide, though he too was in a state that was almost as bad as theirs. In fact Venorsh wondered how the critically wounded warrior was able to walk at all, though dragging himself along might have been a more appropriate description.

Finding himself next to the warrior within moments, Venorsh supported his head and upper body in order to better enable him to speak. Should one have expected sorrow and compassion in the drow’s eyes, they would have been bitterly disappointed. There was only anxiety, perhaps even the hint of fear.

"Who? Where?"

Only two words were uttered, two simple questions that if answered properly would offer the solution to the deadly riddle the agents of House Do’rret were expected to solve. But would T’rhan be able to answer them or was he closer to death than to life?

BaeshraBaeshra snapped his fingers and pointed at the assassin. Kiknah nodded and stood guard over their prisoner. The Lizardfolk walked into the room holding his staff in one hand scanning the room for signs of the attackers. He regurgitates one of the eyeballs of the assassin whose skull he ate into his left hand. Squeezing the eyeball with a loud pop, the goo drips down into the wounds of the soldier in Venorsh’s arms. ”Get up and make your report. You can lay around when you’re dead.” Baeshra walks back to the prisoner as the most serious of the soldier’s wounds stop bleeding and partially close up enough for him to get up under his own strength.

OOCCast Goodberry and squeeze the goo into soldier’s wounds healing him 10hp

OMG! What the...! Oh yuck! You didn't just... did you?
If it wasn't for the gaping wound and excruciating pain torturing his body, T’rhan might have been repulsed by the image unfolding before his eyes! He had heard that the Lizardfolk were more feral and unrefined that Drow, but never before had he witnessed such a stomach-churning sight in his life! Yet as the icky eyeball goo touched his wounds, and he prepared himself for the sting of pain from the weird ichor connecting with the open wounds and severed nerves, he was surprised to find relief; sweet, blessed relief from the pain!

"Who? Where?"

Venorsh was direct and straight to the point as he always was. But it was the Lizardfolk who brought out the soldier in T'rhan and jerked him into action.

”Get up and make your report. You can lay around when you’re dead.”

T'rhan gets to his feet, standing between both Baeshra and Venorsh; both waiting expectantly for a succinct answer to their enquiries so that they can take immediate action.

"Ildan. He met us in the hallway and told us that you had arrived at the Matron's quarters, and that you had requested that we should meet you there. Foolishly, we trusted him. As soon as we arrived he attacked! He took the first two of my men by surprise. We should have had numbers on our side but it was like there was more than one of him, and he was everywhere at once! I fear that if you hadn't arrived when you did he would have finished me off!"

BaeshraBaeshra looked over at the Matron who could clearly hear the report from T’rhan. After getting acknowledgment that all in attendance heard him, he motioned for the two Drow to follow him back to the Matron. Once there, he knelt before the Matron. “We are at your command, Matron. Do you have any other orders for us before the prisoner is taken away?”

Venorsh

Ildan, the one loose end, the thorn at House Do’rret’s side…

Almost even before T’rhan had finished reporting, Venorsh had already approached the Matron and was bowing deeply before her.

"Great Mother of House Mlezzym, by this male’s testimony you are now aware of the involvement of your traitorous servant in the attempt to overthrow you. Ildan is not worthy of your favor, noble Matron, for he seeks to bring ruin to your reign and all you have created. I believe him to be one of the leaders of the faceless ones, the group of infiltrators and assassins that have brought about the deaths of so many citizens of V’elddrinnsshar. With your blessings, Lady, the threat must be dealt with. Give us your permission to hunt the traitor down and bring him before your Grace, dead or alive."

Waiting for Matron Tallin to officially admit Ildan’s guilt and authorize his capture, or permanent removal, Venorsh turned to Baeshra, his eyes glowing dangerously. The lizardfolk had once more surprised him with his skill and ingenuity. He could think of no better companion to hunt down the leader of the faceless ones than Baeshra.

The time to learn the truth through the prisoner’s mouth will come, Baeshra. Now is the time to neutralize the final threat. This parasite must be completely uprooted, once and for all. Ildan must fall. It is up to us.

"Help me trace him down, Baeshra. Ildan is both silent and deadly, but even his passing must have left behind marks. Let’s find them and make him pay."

Kioshomon, Lyda and the remaining Do’rret soldiers would defend the Matron and her daughters, while Baeshra and Venorsh would be going on a hunt.

And may Lolth spare their prey for they certainly would not.

BaeshraStill keeping his head low but sparing a glance at Venorsh, he spoke calmly. ”Ildan’s treachery has been exposed he is as good as dead wherever he goes. We will find him regardless. Our first duty is to the Matron and her safety during this assassination attempt. There is still business to resolve here.”

The Lizardfolk then spoke to Venorsh through their link. Calm yourself. I know you hate the Faceless Ones and don’t want Ildan to escape, but if we don’t see this current situation with the second daughter through here and now all of this will have been for nothing, and it wouldn’t matter if we caught Ildan or not. We need to focus on providing evidence and testimony against Farae. You are the only one here who was in the room when she was captured. I was the one who acquired the documents proving their purchase of the aboleth slime. He may be high up in the faceless ones, but our mission from our Matron in House Do’rret is to ensure we see this through to the end.
