Gallant, you want them to sneak?

You want them to kill?

They've done that.

Never, of course, with a top agent by their side ... but they've managed.

And they're ready to do it again.

A and Sam nod as you lay out the plan and begin drawing a scheme to get into the palace at night.

You hear them discussing various routes ... but eventually they settle on one and turn to you.

"It has to be the underwater war boat, sir. Their security above ground will be tight, but if we can overpower the boat crew on the river dock when they come into the Dancing Pig tonight, then we can take their ship, sail it through the rivers and locks leading up the mountain, and inside to the evil, experimental natatorium and slaad hatching aquarium!"

They seem to think this is a good idea.

And then they turn to the magic, to your magic, watching you as Sam holds out his bowl and A lends their concentration and will to you ... and perhaps you feel the power of people watching and supporting you, the advantage of it ... because you see Sam looking into the bowl and then raising his head with a large grin.

"It worked! And not just any grease, Mr. Gallant ... I think you've put in some gyorg lard ... the best grease there is!"

right-aligned image

After rounds of buttery potato chowder fully restore your vigor, the three of you prepare for the arrival of the sailors. They come, they are tired, crabby, and ready to drink. They don't put up much of a fight.

Sam has them left, sleeping it off in the guest rooms upstairs.

"They won't hold any grudges, they like a good fight," he assures you.

It's just after midnight, so you have plenty of time to get inside the HQ through the secret underwater passageways.

That is, of course, if any of you know how to drive a submarine.
OOC
Oh dear! Piloting this thing seems pretty important.
  1. First Roll a d20 ...
    • ...if you get a 4 or lower, then you are sure you can't pilot this.
      But roll another d20 ...
      • if you get above a 7, you hear the sound of a sailor who was sleeping in the cabin and missed coming into the Dancing Pig.
You can convince or intimidate him to pilot with an advantage d20 roll over 5.
      • If you roll below a 7, you don't hear the pilot, you will need to go back to the Pig and wake up the captain. Decide if the captain is up for the adventure or resents it (your choice), and narrate that!
    • ...if you get above a 5 on your first roll, you think you can figure out the piloting.
    • If you get a 10-15, you are pretty sure (add some detail from your history that would explain why!).
    • If you get a 16-20 then you can definitely pilot it (add some detail from your history that would explain why!).
  2. Next, for the piloting, roll 5d20s, each with advantage.
    • Add these numbers together, then add the number you rolled with your first time.
    • If the total number is above 50 ... you made it through all 5 stretches of the underground system.
    • Was it close to 50? Then tell us how you barely made it.
    • Was it way above 50 ... then tell us how smooth the piloting was.

Gallant walks out to the dock... He was ready well until....
What in nine hells was that. That's not a boat. That's a clankity clank. He can't believe it's not sunk already. He has no clue how to pilot the hunk of junk. Well it's the plan and they both also don't know how to pilot it. So he goes to take a look.

Maybe he can just hit all the switches and get lucky. We'll it worked his elven senses and aid from A and Sam got them through smoothly. Just don't ask him to show you how, or to do it again.

In the passage way he put an arrow in the throat of the 2 guards, only cause they didn't expect it. And up into the enemy hq they went his clothes a midnight blue, almost black as he had activated the elven cloak's ability to camouflage. Even A and Sam had trouble seeing him. But atleast Sam has had some experience with the power of a elven cloak. He might even still be wearing his. At least in the story he told Gallant about his travels he had one. So Gallant could only hope.

It's both late at night and early in the morning at the same time. Some call this 3 a.m., others, like Derk and Kerk, call it "5 hours to go until overnight shift ends."

It had been a very quiet shift. All the big activity would happen tomorrow--well, "today," but after dawn--as everyone bustled about HQ to get ready for the annual Founder's Day Corporate Team Building Ball and Rope Course. The HR department said this year's would be in costume, which initially excited Derk and Kerk until they realized that they would be pulling the night shift before the ball.

So they decided to have their own party. Derk raided his aunt's wardrobe (at least that is what he told Kerk ... Derk had no shame about it, but still ... you had to be careful who you trusted), brought two dresses he called "robes" and stitched together two hats in no time. Hocus-pocus, party girls!

But Kerk was having trouble keeping his hat on. He openly wondered if it was even "regulation."

”Now Kerk, I’m just sayin’, da pointy hat is part o’ our uniform ‘ere, an’ bein’ ‘ere is what made us wizards. Ergo, wizards is gotta wear pointy hats.”

”But think about it, Derk,” Kerk responds, oblivious to everything--even the approach of a nearly invisible elf and his two assistants because of the hat slipping over his eyes, ”Does ya cast spells outta yer hat? Nope, ya don’t. Ipso facto, wizards ain’t gotta wear pointy hats.”

”If that’s so, then why you wearin’ a pointy hat, Kerk?

They both laugh at that and stuff another Wubat flower in their mouths.

"Oi, trippy, man!" says Derk. "Is like I'm seein' me-self...Only I's like a space guard ... wit' like, a posh mid-length blue dress, a snazzy lil' pew-pew gun an' ... oh, dose boots is killers!"

"Yeah?" says Kerk, who could care less about the outfit and is having visions of a woman with a cold, soulless voice who he wants to call "mom." It's freaking him out!

"Wait! Wait! I's talkin' wit' Dr. Spock! Dr. Spock!" Derk shouts.

"Who's he?" Kerk can't help but feel curious.

"I ... I don't even know, brotha. Trippy!" They both laugh so hard they cry, then choke, then really begin to choke ... not from the laughing but from the arrows sticking out of their throats.

"Who broke my kief, brah?"

"Quick! Swallow the--gasp!--flower! It's our only way out!"

And perhaps they do. For they immediately disappear, leaving nearly invisible Gallant and his companions alone.

"Quick," says Sam. "We need to choose a place to hide until dawn. That's when they bring the captives out from their hidden cell for a morning bath. Where's a good spot, Mr. Gallant?"

Gallant has no idea where to hide. But if Sam knows where the bath is it'll do.

"Sam show us where they take them for a bath.", Gallant says.

Sam, too, has no idea.

A neither.

But when you mention the baths, they point to the water and begin wading in.

"Here, Mr. Gallant, take this," Sam says, handing you a reed. "We can be underwater and breathe this way."

And so you do, not terribly well-hidden, but fortunately not eaten by slaads.

And you wait until morning ... until afternoon ... until you know it is time for the ambush because you hear the sliding of a door that sounds exactly like the opening of a cell door.

Sam and A burst from the water ... and if you do, too, then roll initiative.

Gallant, you are the last of your group to rise from the waters, and you look above the churning, foaming mess to see a horrible scene.

A lurches backwards as if struck by some unseen force. Bursting up from the waters around you, a pack of ravenous slaadi grab the strange mechanical being you had so quickly come to view as your friend. Limbs are ripped apart, sending a shower of gears and pins sailing through the air.

Sam is struggling to keep two other slaadi from snapping at you and him.

A young woman in a tailored frock-coat and long skirt has been climbing atop the clinkity-clank device that brought you here, but is already being pulled down from her perch by another group of slaadi, and some strange man in strange attire with a rounded hat and a short wand is running toward her.

You fire off your magical rays which sputter around the vault like water-soaked fireworks. There are so many potential targets, you can't be certain what, if anything, they hit ... and a small faerie dragon has landed on your left shoulder.

left-aligned image
"That's it, isn't it, Mr Gallant?" Sam screams as he struggles to stay afloat. "That's the creature. Take him! Get away if you can, here ..." Sam says, handing you a small wad of Wutub flower petals. "For you and the little dragon," he smiles ... which is fairly remarkable since in handing you the petals he had to let go of the two slaadi he was restraining. And they have returned the favor by tearing off his legs. "It was ... an awfully grand adventure, Mr. Gallant ..." he says, feeding a petal to the dragon as he is pulled under the waters.

The dragon looks up at you, and you can see its body fading into another thread of existence.

"Swallow, Mr. Gallmepicpeircmd," Sam urges, rising one last time before he is pulled under and his words come to you garbled and lost as the waters fill his mouth and lungs.

OOC
Gallant, do you swallow the flower and follow the captive? Or do you remain here to fight or feed the slaadi?

Gallant watched as the team was dying.and one thought hits him."But where is Crispin, Krunchcian, munchian? Whatever the other dragon wante to be called.", no one answered and he saw not his friend who was supposed to be here. And with no time left, he cast sleep and ate the flower to follow the fae dragon.

37. Loose EndsOnce again, Gallant spoke the high elvish word for “sleep” which you may recall was something like ”Yo brah, making toys and fixing shoes for that cobbler has given me a mad case of the munchies. We should totally go bake some cookies in a tree or someth–” He stopped himself short, realizing what went wrong with the last time he cast this spell. It was supposed to be BROWNIES, not cookies! No wonder his spell didn’t work last time. Of course, cutting himself off midway this time meant that the arcane energies dispersed without any apparent effect … he sure hoped there wasn’t an inapparent effect, but as he was already stuffing flower petals into his mouth, there wasn’t really much time left to consider that.

His vision became hazy, shimmering like the heat rising off a sun-baked road. Motes of light seemed to appear, floating through his field of view, gradually growing until they blotted out everything. Then they suddenly subsided.

Gallant looked about. It was as if he was standing in a field of stars. He looked down and felt the lurch of vertigo pulling at his stomach. There did not appear to be anything under his feet but the empty void, and yet he felt as if he stood on solid ground. This place had no walls, no ceiling, just an endless void stretching in all directions and faintly glowing stars, with no indication of how near or far they might be. Was this it? Was this what death was like?

“No you silly mortal, this is not death.” a voice from behind caused Gallant to spin about, questions flooding his mind. Whose voice was that? How did they know what he was thinking? And he had just looked this direction a moment ago and seen nothing but void, how could he now be seeing this:

left-aligned image
Suspended in the void was a massive loom, its threads luminous and iridescent, their ends trailing of in all directions, disappearing into the distance of the void. In front of the void stood a curious creature, no larger than a child. It peered at Gallant through eyes the size of saucers, an impish, lopsided grin twitching across its face. In its bony hands, it clutched a long stick, to the end of which was affixed a shuttle for the loom.

”Mortals, bah. Always going on and on about death. 'Oh, things didn't go the way I planned. I'll just kill myself.' Ha, as if that ever fixes anything.”

”Ahem, Welcome to the Crossing!” the little creature announced with a grand gesture, ”This is where all the threads of existence meet to form the grand tapestry of our multiverse. The world you call home is one of these threads, as is the world you just found yourself in. We can go anywhere from here. The trouble is just figuring out which thread to pull.

“Now, I can help you with that. I understand you have some sort of mission to complete, and I can show you the way to go, but first …”
]
He released his grip on his staff and instead of falling, it floated obediently in the space beside him. He brought his hands together and steepled his fingers, ”first I need you to do something for me.”

“You see, I may know where every one of these threads leads, but I can’t travel on them myself. Those are the rules, apparently, and rules are rules. In order for me to send you back where you belong, I will need some specific components for my spell, and they are located across several different threads. I need you to fetch them for me. If you agree, simply take another bite of your delightful little flower there. Unless you would rather spend an eternity with me here in the void. You won’t die. Trust me, no one dies here. It is just … mind-numbingly dull.”

OOCDecision time!
  • Do you agree to help the little bat-eared guy by going on a scavenger hunt for his spell components? If so click here.
  • Would you rather refuse and stay here. I mean, I can give you another 10 posts worth of Nietzschean existentialism as Gallant stares into the void, but it probably won’t be as much fun.

Gallant answers each question 1 at a time.

"Sam and A. Sam made patato chowder, Sam had me add gyorg lard to it.", Gallant says.

"A Moth.", Gallant says. It just so happens the Moth caught a ride on his cloak...

"A fire spell, I know one.", Gallant says.

"A dimly glowing crystal ball, or seeing orb thingy, maybe guilty spark 343....", Gallant says. (wow, a fortune teller reference, a LOTR reference, and a halo referance...what????)

"Nothal. And yes i barrowed it...", Gallant says. Looking at the ground.

39. A Deal With the Devil … that will certainly have absolutely no unforeseen consequences … right?
right-aligned image
”Ha-ha! Yes, yes, yes, yes, and YES!” the little impish fellow clapped his hands and laughed gleefully as he took each ingredient from Gallant and dropped them into a bubbling cauldron. ”Now I can finally get out of here! … er … I mean … I can finally get YOU out of here. Obviously that’s what I meant. Anyway, too late for buyer’s remorse. Off you go. Toodaloo! Good luck with your mission! Have fun storming the castle, or whatever it is you do!”

The little bat-eared creature nonchalantly shoved Gallant in the chest and he stumbled backwards into a shimmering portal. The entire world lurched in a way that he was weirdly starting to get used to.

He blinked.

And when he opened his eyes, he was back in the tower of the Two Moons Magery where he had started. Kirk and Dirk were still there snoring peacefully on the floor. Mortigorn and his cadre of minions had finished their previous number, but now had moved onto some sort of synchronized choreographed chanting in an unfamiliar tongue. Something about “rama lama lama ka dinga da dinga dong” and “shoo-bop sha wadda wadda yippity boom de boom”

left-aligned image
There were some significant improvements now, though. His chains were gone, for one thing. He still had his sword and his bow, but he could actually reach them now. And the faerie dragon, Buttons, was now perched on his shoulder, the way she had been in that other thread, rather than strapped to a table across the room.

The French witch still stood in front of him, blinking in amazement while Krunchian nestled comfortably in her arms. You’re back!Vous êtes de retour! She was still speaking in that strange foreign tongue, but he found it actually a lot easier to translate it in his head if he just clicked on it as if something had just clicked for him – Well, that is an unexpected surprise. Now quickly, we must go! This is the last musical number of the show, and they will come to their senses soon.Eh bien, c'est une surprise inattendue. Maintenant vite, il faut y aller ! C'est le dernier numéro musical du spectacle, et ils reviendront bientôt à la raison.

OOCYay!! Home sweet home. And all you had to do was make a deal with the devil, and those always work out well for everyone involved. Ah well, worry about that later. You’ve got a mission to complete: rescuing a dragon in distress. In your next post you can do one of the following:
  1. Follow the French witch who says she can lead you out of the tower. If so, please describe how you sneak out of the tower with her and make a stealth roll.
  2. Attack the French witch. You never trusted her before. Why should you start now? If so, please make an attack roll and describe the action you use.
  3. Start killing as many sleeping and/or singing wizards as you can right now while they are helpless, because this story doesn’t yet have a high enough body count to satisfy the toxic masculinity of the patriarchy. Roll 1d20 to see how many wizards you’re able to slay before the various spells wear off. On a nat-20, you get them all. I guess you can narrate that … if you really want to.
  4. Try something completely different. Tell me what it is and describe it.

Gallant looks around somethings were right, or close to it. But one thing still bothers him.
"Where is my partner?", Gallant says.

He also scans the whole room looking to be sure there is no illusion (fey ancestry should cover this as resistant to charm and mind altering spells).

41. Uh-oh
right-aligned image
”I’M RIGHT HERE, YA BIG GALOOT!!” Krunchian’s unmistakable voice comes from the second faerie dragon, the one that you noticed comfortably nestled in the French witch’s arms. ”THAT’S RIGHT, I’M ALSO A FAERIE DRAGON, WHICH I AM SURE COMES AS A TOTAL SURPRISE TO ANYONE WHO DIDN’T READ THE DOSSIERS BEFORE DECIDING TO COME ON THIS MISSION, ESPECIALLY SINCE MY SKILLS AT DISGUISE AND DECEPTION ARE SO INCREDIBLE THAT I AM TOTALLY CONVINCING AS A HUMAN … OR AN ELF … WHICH ONE WAS I AGAIN?!? DOESN’T MATTER, I’M A DRAGON AGAIN AND IT’S TIME WE GOT MY PAL, BUTTONS, OUTTA HERE.”

Across the room, Morigorn and his cohorts have begun swaying rhythmically with their arms around each other’s shoulders. You hear them chanting.
”We'll always be together
Wha oooh, yeah!
We'll always be together
Oh no!Oh, non! the French witch gasps, We only have about a dozen more lines before the song is over.Nous n'avons plus qu'une douzaine de répliques avant la fin de la chanson.

”SO FRENCHY OVER HERE CLUED ME IN ON A LITTLE SECRET WHILE YOU WERE … WHEREVER YOU WERE. SHE’S ACTUALLY A WIZARD-SCHOOL DROPOUT. SHE DOESN’T WANNA BE AROUND THESE JERKS ANYMORE, SO SHE’S GONNA HELP SHOW US THE WAY OUTTA HERE.”

Just then, the music begins to fade out on the other side of the room. The wizards began looking about, dazed and confused. A few of the older ones collapse, thoroughly exhausted by their involuntary dance routine. The one in the center, with the blue robes and the pointy hat, whom you believe to be Mortifgorn cries out.

”Where is the dragon?!? If you don’t get the dragon back here, heads will roll!”

OOCWell, it’s not an illusion as far as you can tell, but your delay means that the Greased Lightnin’ spell has finally completed its duration. The wizards are a little disoriented so they haven’t spotted you yet, but it’s only a matter of time. Some of your options remain the same, some have changed:
  1. Follow the French witch who says she can lead you out of the tower. If so, please describe how you sneak out of the tower with her and make a stealth roll.
  2. Attack the French witch. You never trusted her before. Why should you start now? If so, please make an attack roll and describe the action you use.
  3. Start attacking the no-longer-singing wizards who haven’t noticed you yet, but will probably see the guy on the other end of the sword if it starts swinging at them. Outnumbered 20-to-1? That’s nothing to a knight squire like Gallant … right? If you decide to do this, roll 20 consecutive d20s. You start off catching them by surprise, so if you succeed on the first roll, it will do sneak attack damage, as will successful roll after that, until the first time you miss. After that, all rolls will become opposed rolls and your attack roll will have to be higher than each wizard’s defense roll in order for you to hit.
  4. Try something completely different. Tell me what it is and describe it.

Gallant

Why Gallant was unable to see his partner he doesn't know. But it's good he's here.
"I knew you were a shifter when you pretended tobbe Crispin, then Krunchcian. I knew you weren't a elf or human because you demanded you were. As to being a dragon no I thought that was justva form you were using. Now wisper not yell we have to go quickly and quietly. ", Gallant whispers.

"If he trusts you I do to lead the way we have to go before they spot us. he whispers to the witch. Bow in hand arrow notched.

Back in the land of purple... his blue cloak would stand out. But as it blends with the Grey stone walls (a blueish Grey, not perfect but good enough). They pass through the halls unseen. A couple close calls but out they go. He shoots the guard on the watch tower through the eye. He would have used a spell but they'd of been seen and the alarm would have been sounded.

The guards body fell to the ground in a dark alley. But if they find him they'll know the team got out. So he hopes they don't.
Now to find the Fae gate and get their friends to safety and go home to report a job done.

43. The Great EscapeGallant grasped Frenchy by the hand as she led him through the twisting corridors of the mages’ tower, not because he needed to hold her hand, but sometimes a little platonic hand-holding could be a nice thing. And it was totally, definitely platonic. He wasn’t sweating because of it. No, that was because of that elderly wizard who cast that fireball - it totally made this place feel like a sauna. Wait, was that the other universe? Uh … distraction, distraction. Gallant focussed on the thought of ice cold showers and not the gentle warmth of Frenchy’s hand.

Frenchy guided Gallant down a long winding staircase and pushed open a heavy oak door. Gallant bust out into the cool twilight air and beheld his surroundings:

The Nevergreen Woods
left-aligned image

Hounds howled, and the two moons shone down, throwing competing shadow patterns over the green forest floor. The woods smelled of moss, the tang of sweat from forest creatures under strain, a recent rain, and the tantalizing proximity of fey magic. Here, round orange woodmelons grew on raised stalks, each one swaying and shaking, as if to point the way to safety. The path itself became a stream, became light and shadow, stretched through the woods, bordered with twisting vines and woody tendrils. The trees wriggled and shifted, leafless. Fog spread around the forest and turned the night colder, allowing a hiding place for friends and foes alike.

Gallant caught sight of a confused wizard peering out the window of the second floor tearoom. Without wasting a moment on thought, Gallant nocked an arrow, pulled back his bowstring and let it fly … because shooting strangers was a good way to avoid thinking about the squishy feelings he had whenever Frenchy held his hand.

Stan the guard-wizard cried out into the night, ”Oh no, I’ve been shot in the eye! I suppose I should count myself lucky that the arrow didn’t go any further into my head. I mean, it’s like millimeters away from my brain, and I need that brain. I use it almost every day. Still, it’s hard to feel terribly grateful knowing that I’ve lost the use of one eye and my depth perception will be rubbish after this.” With his horribly impaired depth perception, Stan misjudged the distance and tumbled off the side of the tower, landing in an open ice-chest that someone had left alongside the building. ”Oof. And now I seem to be in some sort of discarded refrigerating cabinet. I sort of feel like I was only brought into existence as a means of furthering someone else’s character development and there’s been no thought at all given to how my maiming and possible death might affect me, y’know?”

But there was no time to think about it now as from behind, Gallant heard the enraged roar of Mortigorn the Great: ”Release the otters!!!”

Well, there’s something you didn’t hear every day. But it’s meaning soon became clear. These were no ordinary otters. They were the trained security otters of the Two Moon Magery, Tea Room, and Otter Refuge. They were rescued as orphans, experimented on to make them larger and more deadly, and honestly that's all they had the will or the remaining mental capacity to know. They were fiercely loyal to their wizard patrons, and hunted in packs. … I mean, they were adorable packs, but fierce hunters nonetheless.

  • You will have up to 10 chances to make 5 successful rolls.
  • However, it gets easier as you build up confidence in your abilities, or harder if you start to take damage from the otters.
  • Make your rolls one at a time.
  • Each time you succeed, you evade or incapacitate one of the pursuing otters. You get to make the next roll with a +1 (these are cumulative and do stack),
  • But each time you fail, an otter clamps onto you. You make the next roll with a -1 for each otter that you have to drag along with you (these are also cumulative).
  • Please provide narration for each roll detailing your success or failure.
  • Once you get to 5 successes, you made it! You arrive at the portal to the Fae Wylds.
  • But if you have less than 5 successes at the end of 10 rolls, the otters overpower you and drag you to the ground.
