The Dojo

Character Generation guidelines and Campaign rules:
  1. Standard 25 CP build
  2. Read the House Rules & Errata and Ratchett's Rokugan threads.
  3. Free Skill: Lore (Your clan) at your Rank (currently 1), ex: Lore (Crane) 1. You may puuchase more ranks using CP if you like, of course.
  4. One FREE roll on the Heritage table in the Clan book. Warning - these are split 50/50 positive/negative. Make your rolls in the Dancing with the Fortunes (Dice Rolling) thread
  5. Forbidden Advantage: Different School
  6. Forbidden Disadvantages: A Home in Ashes, Dishonored, Social Disadvantage
  7. Disadvantages warnings: Some disads have "ranks", like Haunted and Sworn Enemy. At their highest point value they would probably preclude your character from being selected as a Clan rep to the Emperor. Probably. If you have an idea where you think this could work, let's discuss it. I will likely say "no". But a little haunting or a little enmity are both workable.
  8. You cannot lower your starting Honor rank to gain more CP. It may be lowered as a consequence of rolling on the Heritage table.
  9. Glory rank starts at your character Rank, typically 1.

Chargen Basics (paraphrased from the Core Rules):
If you don't have the books to do your own chargen, let me know and we can work through it. I will outline it below as a reference.

Pick a Clan, Family and School - you all did that, but if you're having second thoughts about your Family and School feel free to speak up. If you're having second thoughts about your Clan, we have a bigger challenge. Hopefully you'll have at least ONE Shugenja or this may be a short campaign.
Make your character your own:
  • Attributes all start at 2
  • Attributes cost 8 points to raise (ex: 8 points from 2 to 3, 8 points from 3 to 4.)
  • Skills cost 1 point (ex: 2 points from 0 to 2)
  • Void starts at 2 and costs 12 points to raise per rank
  • Starting Honor is based on your School and raising an Honor rank costs 3 points (I am not allowing you to decrease it to get 2 points back)
  • Raising your Glory rank costs 5 - but please explain we they are so famous
  • Advantages, Disadvantages and Ancestors (aka Advantages & Disadvantages with a face) have various costs
  • Disadvantage max is 10 points

Sample Character

In case you want to see a completed char sheet, this is my Shugenja in my current table-top game. I tried for an easy +1 to Fire and Water so I could heal (Water based spells) and cast Fury of O'Sana Wo (Lightning, Fire based spells). Also, he somehow became a banjo playing Bard.

Bow of Shinjo Magashiro - An unusual bow of a style brought back from the Unicorn's world travels. It is made of layers of wood, bone, leather and silk laminates. Its short limbs makes it well suited for firing from a horse, but it is equally deadly when fired dismounted. Adds 1 to your skill rank for the "Unicorn Archery" skill. Also, once per skirmish, on a Unicorn Archery test where you have added a Raise, after a successful hit you may add your Glory rank to the damage rolled.

Looks good. Just two things I see that you may want to add. His TN to be hit is 20. Reflexes of 3 x 5 = 15 plus light armor is 5. Also, under wounds where it says base you should have a 6 in each box.

Personality: Highly observant and insightful, an exceptional archer, and possessed of a deep commanding voice that belies her small stature. Even compared to others of her Clan, Rena maintains a strict, almost naive reverence for Bushido, and her tactical acumen and capacity for strategy already rivals some of the Lion's greatest commanders.

Flaws: Rena stands at barely 5ft tall, a handicap for any bushi of Rokugan. Her aforementioned veneration for Bushido has also proven detrimental at times. When not discussing strategy or issuing orders on the battlefield Rena can become comparatively placid.

Background: The sixth and by far youngest child of a renowned general, Rena's elder brothers were already accomplished samurai in their own right before she had even seen ten summers. In the shadow of such great bushi, the small and introspective young samurai-ko found her place within the scrolls and stories of her clan, revelling in the past glories of the Akodo and absorbing the wisdom of the family patriarch from his Leadership as well as countless others. When the time came for her education to begin in earnest, there seemed only one logical option. Rena had no skill in communicating with the kami, so the Kitsu schools were closed to her, and her solemn and reserved demeanour made the Ikoma a poor fit in the same way her physical stature did for the Matsu school. This just left the esteemed Akodo school from where her father and brothers had all been taught, and upon special recommendation she was enrolled in the Akodo War College. In the years that followed, Rena's raw talent for strategy was honed to a keen edge, and she earned the respect of her sensei with her unwavering dedication to Bushido. Her gempukku now a year passed, the young Akodo has already seen some small success in command of her clan's samurai, and no longer does she live in the shadow of her kin.
