She was found early the next morning and brought home, but each of the following nights found her helpless to resist a beckoning that she seemed to feel in her soul. On the third day, she lay near death when the monster was slain by a posse avenging another girl. She felt it when it happened, though she only learned the details later. At first, she hoped for recovery, but soon realized that a foul poison was working its way through her. Mustering her will and every ounce of her strength, she visited a midwife accused in whispers of being a witch. The woman herself was not, but at Zella's insistence, or in pity for her desperation, directed her to where she could find a coven. Taking her as a daughter among them, they aided her in quelling the poison, though they could not heal the damage it had already done to her.   For nearly as long as she can remember, Zella has been a collector and curator of books both mundane and esoteric. That latter fact has, in the past, brought agents of the Hoffman Institute to her library in search of answers. Though she played coy at first, once she learned of the Institute's mission, she agreed to grant access to select agents who pleased her sensibilities. At that time, neither considered the other an ally; to the Institute, she was an uncertain resource. To her, they were worker ants doing their job in maintaining the world's order, as she was doing her job in preserving knowledge. After the destruction of the Charleston Branch, she began to notice changes, more things skittering about in the dark spaces between days, and the like. She didn't think much of it, until an older agent came- not to peruse her library, but to speak with her. She entertained him with tea by the fire, but when he suggested that she join the Institute, she was shocked and quickly declined. After all, she was not a worker ant; she had been doing her job, even if they had been failing in theirs. Still, he left a card for her. And after he was gone, she stared at it for a long time. Slowly, she began to remember. She had been someone else once, someone with more drive, more impulse, more... initiative. She tried to push away the flashes, the memories, but over the next couple days and nights, they grew stronger. A week after his visit, she walked out of her library with his card in her hand, and followed to the address embossed on the front.

He gets it. He's with a secret institute, a hush-hush spy almost, and so that wheelchair can't just be a pair of high-tech, lightweight, cushy-padded wheels. But it is. And even still, Javan will laugh at your joke. After all, he's learned that is what people want and—this is the kicker—some of them actually are funny. Dark humor. It's always been his weakness. So, recumbent and officially retired (what do you expect, he is 68), Javan himself is a bit surprised to find himself in the Institute. Want the quick version? is how he usually begins explaining it to his curious colleagues, youngsters all. I was in international aid development. Medical tents on borders, underfunded UN hospital stations in what we called "newly emerging economies," etc. etc. Good people mostly, but after several years you grow cynical. You treat kids for diseases that shouldn't exist in our current day and age and then, to relieve the depression and pressure, you go off on a holiday with all your other global expat friends to Algeria, Lebanon, Thailand, Vietnam, wherever, and you blow what would be two-year's salary of the people you were treating on hotels, food and trifles. We called ourselves "Lords of Poverty," jokingly, of course...but it was true. So I left it all when I was about 55. My friends nodded their head and said: "Yeah, burnout, it happens." And then they booked their next vacation...and they saved a few lives. Me, I left. Traveled for two years. Ended up in Karelia and Lapland. And went back to Quakerism—yeah, that's where most of my friends thought I had truly gone of the deep end. I mean, shamanism and the likes, sure...good, new-age stuff. But I joined a small community of expats, Finns and Sami and we sat around in silence, listening for the voice of the lord. Weird, right? Sometimes, well often really, Javan stops here, assuming he has explained it all. But he hasn't. He knows that only because people have told him so. Oh, yeah, so I sat and did as we are suppose to do, right? Listen for the voice of God. We believe it is within each of us...and I believe that, but I was hearing something else. Now I would say, I was hearing something darker instead. I wrote about it on some obscure Quaker chat board...something visited by about 5 other Friends max. Two weeks later, a young man and woman were knocking at the door to my flat in Kemijarvi. Three weeks after that, I was here. And sometimes, even that wasn't enough. Oh? You wanted to know about the chair, but felt awkward asking. Yeah, I'm not lame. Rehab. I should be up and about in three weeks. Just a bad accident cross-country skiing this year. It involved a reindeer...now that's the story I should have told you!

In this silence Esmae raised her hand under a withering glare from the old lady that smelled like too many cats. Take your gallon of coffee and six free donuts to go next time, you old bag. She stood and she spoke, telling the story of her abduction and the nightmares that followed, baring her soul to people that just wanted to leave. She ground her teeth at the eyerolls and bit her tongue at the scoffing, although the cat lady was one more glare from getting her teeth knocked out. Why do I even do this? Because no one else understands. Experiencer support groups were hard to find even in the city. That’s what they called themselves, called people like her, who had gone through an alien abduction. Experiencer, like it was something she had wanted to try out. Every Thursday night it was the same people with the same stories, the similarities between all of them forming a bond of healing. Everyone, that is, except for her. Enough time on the internet, and a few attempts at groups closer to home, told her that her experience wasn’t like so many others. Her experience had been much darker, more violent, and something that nobody wanted to hear about. Well too damned bad. ”Ma’am?” She was tilting the nearly empty coffee dispenser as she shot cat lady a murderous glare, **** you Eleanor, when a hand grabbed her shoulder. Someone tried to warn them, but wasn’t nearly quick enough as her reflexes took over and made use of years of training. She pivoted into a joint lock followed up with an elbow to the side of the head that turned the first guy off like a light. A swift kick to the balls dropped the second guy reaching for her before he had a chance to do much of anything. It was not the kind of fancy maneuver expected from someone with over twenty years of intensive martial arts training, but it was delivered with the strength and precision of that same person. Esmae’s first encounter with Hoffmann Institute recruiters was a brief one, but it was not her last, which was probably for the best since things were about to start getting really weird.

Too good. Doyle had come across her kind a couple of times before. If you were to say it out loud, other players would probably just shake their heads and agree that it really did seem like she was reading their minds. But they would mean it metaphorically. He watched her microexpressions as other players acted, and adjusted his play while avoiding hands that she stayed in. It's not like he could hold it against her. He'd do it if he could, right? Sure, it was a stretch. But he couldn't see any other explaination. Whatever it was, telepathy or not, he seemed to have a handle on how to work with people like that around - and wasn't that what really mattered? After an hour, she collected her robust stack chips to go cash out. That's when he noticed them. A man and a woman who had been playing the slot machines near the poker room entrance got up from their chairs and followed her. His curiosity kicked in. They looked like they had been trained, so he knew that they wouldn't try anything inside. That would cause a fuss. Which meant that he had a few minutes while she waited in line at the cashier's cage. Doyle looked at his watch and muttered, "Shoot! The old lady is gonna kill me!" and hurridly racked his winnings into a chip tray. She was zipping her purse closed at the cashier's cage when he got in line. "Hey! You played a good game!" That caught her attention. She looked at him coldly. She probably thinks I'm going to hit on her. Let's hope she recognizes this as professional courtesy. With a wink and a smile, he simply stated, "I think your friends are looking for you," and pointed to the couple loitering by the cash machine. She paled and turned back to the cashier, leaning in close enough to talk to her in quiet tones. After a moment, he heard the cashier say, "Of course, Miss. We can have someone escort you to your car." The couple by the cash machine moved to the entrance of the coffee shop and glared at Doyle. Ok. Maybe that wasn't the smartest thing I've ever done. Doyle meandered through the casino until he was sure everyone involved had left, then slipped into the elevator. He wasn't sure what he had just interrupted but he was pretty sure he wanted to grab his travel bag and move on. He jabbed the button for the twelfth floor and the elevator began to move. Down. Doyle jabbed the twelfth floor button again. The doors slid open on the bottom floor of the parking garage. A pair of athletic men in business casual attire rushed in before he could even swing and pinned Doyle to the back wall of the elevator. As he struggled to slip free, a woman in a charcoal pantsuit stepped into the elevator "Mr Curry, let's talk."

Background When the FBI stormed the Transcendent Light compound in 2007, they found thirty-one dead bodies, and two survivors. One of the survivors was me. An agent found me hiding under a storage rack in one of the underground bunkers. His official report noted the basics: approximately ten years old, male caucasian boy, brown hair, hazel eyes. Signs of dehydration and malnourishment. Non-verbal. Extensive scarring on back, half-healed radial fracture of left arm. The second survivor was my biological father. Daniel Lee Colvin, forty-five years old, no priors, self-proclaimed leader of the Transcendent Light commune located in Marin County, California. He had eleven “wives” and twenty-four children, and all but me were dead. If you’re thinking the math seems off there, it’s because some of his wives were his children.   Nowadays, Daniel Lee Colvin is serving thirty-two consecutive life sentences at a men’s supermax in an undisclosed location. He has a roof over his head, three squares a day, books to read, an hour of exercise in the yard, and the constitutional right to healthcare. Otherwise, he’s in solitary confinement in a six by nine cell. Visitors have to be approved by the warden himself, and visits can be no longer than fifteen minutes. None of the prison staff are allowed to be alone with him for any reason, and his guards rotate out monthly. If that seems like overkill, it’s really not. You see, he didn’t murder thirty-one people, per se. He simply asked them to do it themselves, and all of them did, willingly. Even the children. Everyone except me. In the old days, people would say he has the gift of gab. Charisma. Magnetism. A sociopath to end all sociopaths. In modern parlance, a psychologist might diagnose him with antisocial personality disorder, but that would be…imprecise. So-called sociopaths don’t really care about others other than for what they can use them for. But Daniel Lee Colvin cares. That’s the secret, he used to tell me. The secret to manipulating people. People will sense on some level if you secretly hold back your contempt, if you see them as things to be used. What you have to do instead, is care about them. You have to be genuinely interested in people and what makes them tick. You have to get to know them, their hopes and dreams, the secret wishes they hold in their hearts, and you have to want those things for them too. You have to admire them, support them, love them. Do those things, and you have the key to everything. I’ve seen reports that describe his level of influence over others with the word “supernatural”, but you know, that’s just hyperbole, right? Who am I, you might ask? My name is Oswald Ellis. My given name is from my biological father. He said he named me after one of his heroes; I don’t think it’s hard to figure out who that would be. My surname is from the man who adopted me, the FBI agent who found me in the cellar, Hank Ellis. My actual father, you could say. Hank is old school, stoic and gruff, the proverbial tough guy with a heart of gold, the diametric opposite of everything Daniel Lee Colvin is. Anyway, I was talking about myself. I’m twenty-nine years old, six feet even, still brown-haired and hazel-eyed, athletic, the spitting image of my biological father from back in the day, though I guess it’s not hard to understand why. I dual majored at Berkeley, criminal justice and computer science. Some of my classmates loved computers, were more comfortable with code than people. I wasn’t one of those. For me, computer science was a means to an end, a skill I could bring to the table. After graduation, I did a short stint in the San Francisco county sheriff’s department, then followed in my adoptive father’s footsteps and joined the bureau.The FBI figured out pretty quickly I was well-suited for undercover work. See, you might say I’m a people person. Lying, fast-talking, convincing, cold-reading, it’s all second nature, and as long as I’m using those skills in service of the greater good, then we’re good, right? A lot of criminal organizations need a hacker type, so opportunities to get in good with a group aren’t hard to come by. A few sting operations and commendations under my belt, and things were going well. That’s when things get…weird. You might say my life is already pretty weird, but trust me, it gets weirder. I was under in a drug smuggling ring in Chicago when I met the vampire. That’s a whole thing I won’t get into now, but suffice it to say it got pretty bad. At the end of it, I left the FBI and went to work for the Hoffmann Institute. Hank doesn’t understand why I left, and I can’t tell him. Best case scenario, he thinks I went private for the money, and the protect and serve part of him won’t forgive me for that. Worst case scenario, he thinks I’m finally embracing my bloodline and becoming my biological father’s son, that I’m going off the rails and Hoffmann is some kind of cult. Doesn’t help that HI is so mysterious. There’s a quote from Aldous Huxley that Daniel Lee Colvin used quote in his sermons, back at the compound: “Morality is always the product of terror; its chains and strait-waistcoats are fashioned by those who dare not trust others, because they do not dare to trust themselves, to walk in liberty”. I don’t think the author meant it the same way as Colvin interpreted it, but maybe he did. In any case, the way I see it, Hoffmann is working toward the greater good, and I’m working for Hoffman, so maybe that says something about me. If it doesn’t, then maybe I’m still in the right place.

Focus: Pan flute made of very rare African Blackwoods and Brazilian Rosewood. These shepherd's style pipes were treated with resins as rare and exotic as the wood itself. The bindings are of pure white mulberry silk, waxed by hand in softened beeswax and tied using ancient Eastern traditions. This flute can lull a person to respite, or even produce a relaxed almost hypnotic state for ensorcellment.

Focus: Antique pocket watch. Sterling silver with a Stag engraved on the cover. Ivy and scroll work engravings circle the outer circumference of the watch. Used to summon "Jeeves" the mysterious force that function as an Unseen Servant for Ren. His own musings are that there is a sylph or other air spirit bound to the instrument, or perhaps a pookah. Optionally, it is just a bit of Fey magic that he "felt" while looking at instruments in a Belgian pawn shop.

 

Renard grew up as the only child of a lovely and independent single mother in Las Vegas Nevada. Unbeknownst to Ren, his Fiona mother had been a wide-eyed and naïve college student when she came to America from Great Britain for college. Her focus was on Hospitality Management as she dreamed of running her own restaurants or becoming a star chef. Her dreams changed when she fell in love with an enchanting fellow student. And enchanting is not just a term for someone of seductive charisma. In this case, her paramour, Kestrel McRisa, used enchantment magic as easily as breathing and overwhelmed the young lady within moments of their first meeting. They had a tumultuous summer romance that ended when he told her of his Sidhe origins and that he must return to his ancestral home.

When the baby came, there was no way to contact his father. Fiona dropped out of college and went to work, first as a waitress and later as a dancer in some of the many shows and cabarets in Las Vegas. She never remarried, nor did she seriously date. Ren grew up as the focus of all of his mother's unrequited love. His only competitor was performance art itself, as Fiona discovered not only an aptitude, but a passion for dance and the stage. As a result, young Renard became a dancer himself to help his mother practice, and to spend time together. He was in his teens when the two of them discovered the power of his own musical gifts. Just as his father could evoke the passion of a fair young maiden, Renard found he could captivate audiences with his voice, a particularly passionate dance, or any of a number of musical instruments he picked up in the many pawnshops that a gambling town makes quite popular.

Throughout his teen years, Fiona steered Ren through the turbulent passionate life of a very gifted and magical boy with a normal dose of human hormones and drives. When he turned nineteen, Ren went to New York where he, perhaps inevitably, gained a unique spontaneous entry into the famed Juliard school of Performance Arts. Most likely there was more than a hint of "talent" at that audition. His first year met enormous success despite the envy of classmates. His second year that success led to an intense, passionate, and eye-opening relationship with another prodigy of equal ability. Chara was an immigrant from Greece, which probably reminded Ren of his mother and sparked the first feeling of kinship. The shared vocal gifts of a nascent half-sidhe bard, and a seeming siren, as well as their magical presence on stage, made them a popular duo for performances. It also made them both quite popular in other, more intimate, gatherings. Chara turned out to be very open-minded about intimacy and urged her lover to experience other partners and their passions. She certainly did the same.

Ren discovered the otherworldly nature of his partner when he found her consuming one of their instructors at their shared apartment. His love abruptly became terror as he saw the darker nature of the succubus he had been living with. In a battle fueled by their magical ancestries Ren was the underdog, but somehow managed to prevail. Unfortunately this left two female corpses in his apartment, and clear signs of a struggle, sexual predation, and a violent murder.

He fled the city and wandered for a decade or more, often moving from town to town. He made connections with hustlers, charlatans, and black-market dealers to keep himself under the radar. His jobs included dance instructor, choreographer for music videos and martial arts movies, and small local musical gigs or even busking on the street to avoid attention. His natural, or rather supernatural gifts made him a facile learner for things like fencing and martial arts during his choreography. And those skills landed him jobs teaching in dojos and academies. This went on for years until an advertisement drew him to the secretive world of the Hoffman institute for an interview.
