Welcome to the Parabellum Games!
Game DescriptionThe kingdom of Baalreisan is one of the preeminent military powers in the world of Kairinia. It is a country founded on the beliefs that there is no danger or obstacle that cannot be overcome by hard work and perseverance. National pride and self determination are embedded in its citizens from their youth and once every five years the kingdom invites warriors from all across the realms to take part in a glorious series of martial contests to show who is truly the best of the best. It is a month long festival in which gladiators test their mettle against each other and against deadly beasts gathered from every continent. No matter which contest, lethal or nonlethal, a gladiator takes part in one can gain honor, glory, and riches beyond imagining by being crowned a victor at these games. Hosted in the famed Volker Macht Colosseum spectators arrive in droves from every corner of the world to witness power rarely seen in the public eye. Fortunes can be won or lost within the sanctioned betting halls of the arena and if ever there was a time to find an opportunity this would be it. Do you have what it takes?

Game Type - AKA: What to ExpectThis will hopefully be a short but sweet players versus monsters arena style adventure with each player also taking part in a mini-story tailored to their characters in between arena matches. Your characters have chosen to enter the Parabellum games and specifically take part in the Monster Hunter competition.

This competition consists of a series of nine progressively more difficult monster encounters hosted at the arena. These encounters will be spread out over the month with three encounters held on a single day back to back. In between each fight players have one minute to recover before the next fight begins. Players will have one week in between competition days during which time PCs can rest, purchase equipment/services, and will take part in mini-quests within the capital city of Vlastheim. These mini-quests will not be extended RP scenarios and will be designed to be completed with one single post from the PC. (This is mainly to avoid dragging down the game with individual PC's solo quests)

If the PCs complete all nine challenges and win the Monster Hunter competition there will be one final mini-quest afterwards to wrap up each player's story.

Death: These fights will be live or die and I will not fudge rolls. That said, I will be adjusting monster statistics prior to the game starting to ensure the encounters are not neigh impossible simply due to overly high numbers. The first few fights should actually prove more a warm up for the PCs while the last few fights will be beyond the PCs normal challenge range. Teamwork will be critical for the final encounters.

Evil PCs: This will be a team game so while you are welcome to play evil malcontents you had better be able to work with a group. You are welcome role play tension between PCs so long as both players do not feel either side has crossed a line. There will be absolutely no PvP or other negative player on player behavior allowed. Violence against monsters is highly encouraged however!

About Your DMI've been kicking around on the Crossing since 2006 and am a veteran 3.5/Pathfinder player. I have gamed in dozens of games around the Crossing over the years and I have run at least three prior play by post games in the past. One was in my very early years and fell apart due to my own inexperience and lack of time. The second was a high level PvP style game which ran for quite some time before finally concluding after a few years. The third was a short lived high powered dungeon crawl in which I got burned out due to the complexity of managing both NPC enemies and NPC allies alongside powerful PCs. In my youth I was quite the cheesy min/maxer type player who favored roll play or role play. In my age however I've come to appreciate good role play though I still do enjoy building unique and flexible characters. (Mostly so I don't feel useless in combat)

Why I am Running This GameThis game arose out of my real life game and my desire to not only playtest various monsters (Both from the books and homebrew) but to also flesh out a bit of the lore in my homebrew D&D world of Kairinia. "But Eviltedzies, didn't you just say one paragraph earlier that you got burnt out running a high powered campaign? How do you expect to be able to run this game?" Simply put by managing both my expectation and player expectations. As stated prior, I do not intend this to be a massive epic adventure spanning multiple years in real life. If we actually finish this game and it is considered a success I may consider running it again with a new set of players or perhaps even running the player versus player competition.

What size arena are you looking at? Is mounted combat a reasonable choice where we have room to maneuver?

The arena is a roughly 275ft long by 160ft wide oval in shape with hard packed dirt and sand floors. (I will update the main post with this info since this is relevant for some folks builds)

Mounted combat will be a valid combat strategy in these fights as the terrain will not change in between matches other than where it has been magically manipulated by the PCs or enemies.

Sage is banned for obvious reasons, but what about Prodigy? It can get wild, too.

Also, which pantheon are you using? Does this world have its own gods and beliefs? Or are we free to make those up?

What is the state of firearms in this setting?

If we make our own race, can we make our own favored class bonuses? (Stealing from existing ones, obviously, such as "+1/6 hedgewitch secret", not OP like...+2 spheres each time you take the FCB or something)

Will prebuffing be allowed? With a preset number of rounds? Or just buffs that last long enough?

No tactical teleportation is an interesting twist. It makes hard crowd control really strong, on the surface.

Prodigy is allowed. It is highly flexible and its combo system is uniquely potent if used correctly, but I don't find it abusive. (At least in my experience and I've played both a regular Prodigy and a Battle-born Prodigy)

Pantheons are one thing I have not yet gone into much detail on. Due to the Horizon War much knowledge of previous gods and goddesses was wiped out. For the most part civilization has had to recreate religion from scratch. Two notable exceptions to this is the Golden Emperor of Jukai and the Priestesses of the Eternal soul from Soul Terra. Both have churches dedicated to them due to their power and instrumental role in the building of their respective nations (although the Priestesses refuse to acknowledge themselves as gods) For simplicity sake you can consider that there is at least one god or belief system dedicated to many of the staple concepts. (Good, Evil, War, Death, Nature, ect.......) You are more than welcome to create your own gods and religions however given that there has been over 1,000 years for the world to rebuild itself.

Edit: I have added a section on Religion in Kairina with a brief overview of some of the more notable newer religions as well as at least one goddess worshipped even before the great Horizon War.

Firearms would be considered "Emerging Guns" per the Pathfinder rules. They are rare but not completely unheard of. Due to the prevalence of magic and supernatural abilities guns have not had the same impact on warfare as they did in our modern world. The desert Kingdom of Mar'Zhal'Adul does make heavy use of guns in their elite unites due to their hatred of magic and they have a pseudo monopoly on the black powder trade due to this. (Though PCs with the Gunsmithing feat can make their own black powder as normal) The only other groups that generally have some gun users among their ranks are the pirate clans of Arrhakor and some dwarven clans.

I swear somewhere I once saw a list of Expanded Universal Alternate Favored Class bonuses. That said if you create your own race you may create your own Favored Class Bonus so long as it is in line with existing ones and is approved by me.

Gladiators will be able to pre-buff prior to the start of the first match of each day but there will be a 1 minute interlude between the gladiators entering the arena and the monsters being released. (Hyping up the crowds and whatnot). Before the 2nd and 3rd match of the day you will have 1 minute to heal, buff, ect... So if you have 10min/level or 1hour/level buffs feel free to pop them before you even enter the arena. 1round/level buffs you may want to hold off on until right before the fight begins.

Hail Battlechaser! Good to see an old face in the crowd. Rasputin's shinanigans in my previous PvP game were not the inspiration for the increase in the cost of extradimensional containers. This change is due partly to lore reasons and partially due to the repeated shinanigans of my real world players.

Hey Evil, good to be back once again. I have a few questions:
- is only spheres magic allowed or combo of Vancian magic and spheres? A possible exploit could be the grim hunter trait and the instant enemy spell.
- are oaths allowed?
- if we convert and archetype that grants extra spells known to spheres does it grant extra talents known? A one on one ratio might be too beneficial.
